Outfielder: Sox looking to Trade Jermaine Dye
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 10, 2008 1:45 pm

In a post to his blog for Newsday, Ken Davidoff lists three teams who are willing to deal a veteran player, such as the White Sox, who are looking to trade OF Jermaine Dye.

…if the Mets need to acquire a corner outfielder with power, who has leadership skills, successful post-season experience, and a short-term contract, dye should be of interest to them

…from what i can gather, the Sox will likely want a pitcher back in a deal for dye, who they are eager to move, in an effort to get younger and free up some cash

Dye hit .292 with 34 HR, 96 RBI and a .344 OBP in 154 games for the White Sox this season.

He has hit at least 20 home runs during each of the last four seasons, while playing mostly right field.

Dye will earn $11.5 million in 2009, after which he has a mutual option in 2010 for $12 million, or a $1 million buyout that could make him a free agent.

The Mets should be looking to get younger, not helping the White Sox get younger.

This is the kind of trade you can make in March, no need to do anything stupid now.

    • therealsince86 says:

Unless you can unload Castillo in the process.

      • Nate W. says:

The White Sox want to get younger, but will take three years of Castillo instead of one year of Dye?

maybe they could unload Schoeneweis and Dauner Sanchez too…

        • therealsince86 says:

I never said just Castillo for Dye. If we could some who take 2 salaries from them and give back Castillo and prospects then maybe.

  2. mistermet5757 says:

it’s basically a one year contract for an OF with homerun power, good avg and great leadership skills, not to mention the right handed bat we’ve been looking for since trading Xavier Nady two years ago. i don’t know what the Sox are looking for, but if it is reasonable, i’d trade for him in a second. he’s just what this team needs.

  3. Not a bad idea, but we have to a$$ume they’ll want Niese and then some, probably Parnell as well. I’m really hesitant to give up our young promising pitchers now… the Mets should be trying to get younger too.

    • its hard to be a met fan says:

The Mets are already young….they need to get better not younger….btw Holiday is goiung to the A’s as per Heyman

  4. bigchart333 says:

well it’s not that stupid, because if you truly believe that F-Mart is the future, then u need a stopgap, veteran, reliable OF on a short deal in the meantime…

expand the trade to include vazquez and swisher and become the Ny MetsSox!!!

thats a joke, before u people blast me

    • I won’t blast you, not at all.

I don’t want anything to do with Swisher, but if a reasonable deal can be put together for Dye and Vasquez, we’d have to at least consider it.

    • Nate W. says:

True about the stopgap, but I think Murphy/Tatis is that one year stopgap…

I would think about Dye and Vasquez if Castillo’s contact is going the other way as well as prospects that arent too painful to part with. But in most cases it doesnt make sense to bring in another older, frail guy. And I cant see the White Sox thinking three years of Castillo is less bad than two years of Vasquez.

      • therealsince86 says:

Agree on those accounts except for the LF platoon. If Murphy is not the 2B then he will be the starter in LF. Tatis has much more value on the bench. If Murphy is at 2B then a starter is needed in LF and Dye would be fine there on a 1 year deal.
I just don’t know what it would it would take for those 2.

        • Nate W. says:

I say Murphy/Tatis platoon knowing that Murphy is going to get most of the AB’s and Tatis will play against tough lefties, and also backup elsewhere.

To some extent the Mets plans really hinge on being able to trade Castillo and Delgado. Which will be the toughest part of the offseason for Omar.

I would prefer Murphy/Evans at 1B with Orlando Hudson at 2B and Tatis on the bench or taking AB’s away from Church against lefties.

        • therealsince86 says:

Now we are really in disagreement. Hudson will be a worse signing than Castillo. The guy wants at leat 4/48 WOW is he overrated.
As for Delgado, if we could trade him for a closer and slot Murphy at 1B and a new LF then I am all for change. I would get a guy like Grudzy to play 2B for cheap even Harriston Jr.
Just 2 names to say no to this offseason, Fuentes and Hudson.

        • Nate W. says:

          Ok on Hudson..

I cant see then using any pairing of Delgado, Castillo, and Murphy at 1B/2B and having a respectable IF defense.

So trading just one of them isnt enough, unless Castillo will be willing to spend the whole year on the DL.

        • therealsince86 says:

Eh, we can do it for a year. I wish we were much more into the Tex market myself but Delgado and Murphy/Castillo will be ok for a year otherwise. Could be worse, could have been Jacobs and Uggla. Now that was a terrible duo.

        • The Slider says:

          Murphy’s not playing second base.

  5. therealsince86 says:

I just have no idea what they would want. Would they take Evans, Parnell, Niese and Castillo for Dye and Vasquez?

    • Nate W. says:

change one of Niese/Parnell to Heilman and I would really have to think about it. But I cant see parting with both pitching chips for that.

      • therealsince86 says:

I hesitate on it too. I guess my thing is I see Parnell as no more than a middle reliever at best. Maybe he is more. True if they would take Heilman and leave Niese it would be a done deal.

        • Nate W. says:

I simultaniously feel that Heilman is a better pitcher than Parnell.. duh! and prefer keeping Parnell over Heilman.

Aaron’s time as a Met is through, its time to move on. If that means using Parnell as a less effective 7th inning guy then so be it. Give him a chance to become better, and lessen the role by finding good 8th and 9th inning pitchers.

        • chico says:

          Heilman + Parnell + Castillo + Evans = Vasquez + Dye

I think they are getting taken in that deal, but if they are willing to do it, I’d pull that trigger in a NY minute!

Heilman and Castillo are addition by subtraction, and Evans imo isn’t going to amount to much, so if we can do Parnell for Vasquez and Dye, let’s getrrrr dun.

        • Coolpapabell says:

I can’t imagine Kenny Williams would except anything less than Niese. I don’t think we match-up well in this deal. I think the White Sox have a punchers chance in their division, so I would Imagine Dye plays a big part in their attempts to take the division crown. So if they were to defer that, they should get some thing substantial in return. Heilman, and Parnell is not the formula to get thsi done. A desperate team in July coudl offer more than that, if the Sox are out of the race by then.

        • therealsince86 says:

Agreed. I would think that if trading with the WSox we should just focus on Vasquez and leave well enough alone.

  6. Gina says:

I’d rather get Vazquez and Swisher.

    • therealsince86 says:

While Swisher has value, how can you say he would be a better option than Dye?

      • Coolpapabell says:

I would have to agree. Dye has been a lot more productive then Swisher. You are hoping that last year was an anomoly with Swisher while Dye will more likely produce as he usually does barring injury.

      • Gina says:

No but he’s younger and less likely to fall off a cliff production wise because of age/injuries. Plus I imagine he’ll cost a lot less than Dye and you’ll only get one year of Dye where as Swisher is under contract for multiple years. Plus Swisher is an excellent defender. I’m not sure I’d want Swisher in the starting line-up on a regular basis, although he had an extremely unlucky year this year, but I think when you consider the contract lengths + cost Swisher is the better option.

    • bigchart333 says:

i’ll take either one, swisher or dye, as long as vazquez is included. I can see dye being a cliff floyd type on this team for one year…a pro’s pro, with pop, that is a good clubhouse presence.
Swisher is a hard nosed player who’s had some real success in the past, that HOPEFULLY a change of scenary can bring back…

either way, adding one of those bats WITH a nice 4th starting pitcher will help this team immensely and lessen what we gotta buy in FA

    • chico says:

Dye has one year left then a 1M buyout if we don’t like him. Swisher’s contract has 3 years left and doesn’t hit very well either. Why would we want Swisher instead of Dye? I usually agree with just about everything you say Gina, but I’m just not seeing this one. What am I missing?

      • therealsince86 says:

Now if she was saying that he would be more likely to obtain? For sure.

      • Gina says:

Swisher had an extremely unlucky year. I’d expect his offensive numbers to bounce back. Plus he’s younger and will likely cost less to obtain.

    • Gina says:

Also I know a lot of people have no interest in projections but Swisher is projected to have a much better year offensively than Dye next year.

  7. Agees Catch says:

Why are bloggers insistng on platooning Murphy. The kid is an everyday player

    • therealsince86 says:

I don’t get the point in it either. Even if he is not yet an every day player he can’t become one by platooning. I think that is why it was mentioned in the offseason of finding him a permanent position. 2B is his IF he can do it.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

yea im not sure it would help him develop by only facing RH pitching. he will become one of those lefties who is completely lost late in game when a loogy comes in. ive been crossing my fingers since october that this kid will pick up 2B and be sufficient enough to play the position everyday.

  8. FlightFromHouston says:

we should be building a team, not looking to bring in aging stop-gaps.

    • therealsince86 says:

Depends on what our idea with Fmart is. He is not ready for this season but should be for 2010. That is building a team.

      • bigchart333 says:

u and i seeing eye to eye lately, THEREAL…

i think if anyone thinks that F-Mart will be “ready” in 09, they’re kidding themselves. All the talent in the world won’t make up for lack of playing time in AA over the last 2 years, due to his injuries. In all honesty, if there’s ANOTHER injury, dont be surprised if we dont see him on a regular basis til 2011! Thats why a Dye would be good, and even though he’s old and lefty, even a Raul Ibanez…basically, you need someone you’re not committing to for more than 2 years, someone who is CONSISTENT, is a PROFESSIONAL and won’t ruffle the feathers in the clubhouse..a good, solid, dependable bat that will be a good influence on the team and the youngsters. Dye has had injuries in the past, but he is pretty much a consistent bat over the last 5 years or so. Again, if he’s added onto to a vazquez deal, you have to really get into negotiations, i think

  9. LIMetfan74 says:

You can cross off Holiday Hayman reporting hes going to the A’s

  10. chico says:

Why would the A’s trade for Holiday?

    • chico says:

So does that mean that Beane couldn’t find any takers for Street, so he’s spinning him for Holiday, and will then trade Holiday for something else? The A’s and Holiday just doesn’t make any sense on so many levels.

    • Gina says:

Because Beane lives to confuse people.

  11. therealsince86 says:

How abou this one. Contreras and Vasquez for Castillo and Heilman?
Clears 33 million from their salary at the cost of 18 for Castillo.
For us it gives us Vasquez and unload’s Castillo’s contract for 1 year of Contreras contract. If he can pitch let him compete for the #5 spot, if not you are out 8 million instead of 18.

    • chico says:

It leaves us with 4 RHP and 1 LHP though. Not very good for balancing purposes. If you then trade Vasquez or Contreras and sign Wolf or CC or another LHP, it sounds fine, but you can’t let it stand as is, or the teams built to kill RHP’s will kill us.

    • Coolpapabell says:

I have read in one of the Chicago news papers that they want to keep Contreras and at the very least have him close if they get the right package for Jenks, or have him set up in the bull pen. I am not sure if they have entertained theidea of trading him.

  12. FlightFromHouston says:

is Dye considered a good “clubhouse presence” ?

  13. oleosmirf says:

Jermaine Dye would do wonders for this team. He’d be the perfect #5 hitter and would allow Murphy to move to 2nd base then if you don’t want him next year you buy him out and either bring up F-Mart or use Evans.

  14. houstonpete0 says:

If you could get Dye for Evans and Neise you have to pull the trigger. This is a right handed vet with pop and leadership to bat in between the Carlos’. Its a good fit and your only taking him on for a year. It seems like a no brainer to me. I would add Heilman to the deal if I had to.

Im not sure Vasquez is a good fit with the Mets. He is being tossed out of town and he was already run out of NY once. Id take the $ and get a starter from FA. Id also look into making a move on 1 or 2 of the jap players for the pen.
