According to Randy Youngman, of the OC Register, “Angels owner Arte Moreno already has decided against bringing back record-breaking closer Francisco Rodriguez.”
Last week at his blog for 1050 ESPN Radio,
Andrew Marchand wrote, “The Mets are not interested in offering K-Rod a five-year, $75 million contract, but this may not be a deal breaker because (the agent) says K-Rod will be flexible.”
…as i have said before, only the Mets, Rangers, Tigers and Angels have been linked to rodriguez in rumor, which means, being a team from New York City, most likely with the most money, the Mets may be wise to let Brian Fuentes and k-rod come to them, while poking around the trade market, and maybe spooking the free agents in to dropping their price…
By the way, among offering up a bunch of other interesting tidbits, Youngman believes the Angels are going to offer Mark Teixeira a six– or seven-year deal worth $20 million per season.

K-rod, here’s 4 years at 15.5 millions per (62 mil) and oh, texiera, 6 years here’s 21 millions per (126 mil).. delagado, how’s seatlle or toronto sounds? bye, u never wanted to be a met anyway, castillo, HERE’S A PACKAGE FOR YOU, OPEN IT WHEN U GET HOME OK.. 2 HOURS LATER…. BOOOOOOOMMMM!!!!!!!
hi alex, i’ve come to the conclusion you are 12…or have the mind of a 12 year old
lol, no, I am 29 years old.. i just don’t like castillo, i am a firm believer that he drags this team.. if anybody is offended by my boom joke i apologize
i’m not offended by it…but the amount of money you are throwing around is insane…to me at least
I thought he might be 12 because he sounds like a lolcat.
Krod accidentaly the whole ‘09 budget!
k-rod and teixeira for 37 millions, delgado cost 12 millions, therefore i’m only suggesting 25 millions for those two in position we need for years to come, after this our focus will be in pitching, pitching, pitching…
this is certainly good news….cuts down on the market for him
Finally!
Cerrone backs a K-Rod in a Mets Uniform scenario.
Welcome aboard, Matt. Next stop: Citi Field in October!
umm…I dont think he stated in any way that he is backing K-Rod…he reported some news and said it would be wise to have Fuentes AND Krod come to us…
But…what I think is happening is that the mets will flirt with Fuentes and maybe even give him one of our famous “Connecticut tours” in the hopes KROD comes to us with a more reasonable offer. Krod wants his money and he knows there arent many teams that will give him his money. He will be “flexible” because he is going to have to be.
That said…I want Krod for the right price…I only want Fuentes if Krod is “arod-esq” in his demands and if we fail to trade for a closer. I hope Fuentes is not our first choice. Billy Wagner signing at age 33 is not the same thing as Brian Fuentes signing at age 33.
I’m just pointing out the fact Cerrone no longer paints K-Rod in some ridiculous ‘bound-to-fail’ light like he used to. He seemed to be in Fuentes camp from the start..
Agreed.
Fransisco Rodriguez is still going to be a big money closer, this is just the begining of free agency and desperate teams will use desperate measures. I am not sure that we will land K-Rod nor am I sure that he would be worth it to give him even a 4 year deal.
Is there anyone in the minor league system that maybe able to get the job done?
We can’t trust them.
We cant trust who? Are you talking about our pitchers in the minor league?
I believe if the Mets based all there decisions based on where a player is ranked, Daniel Murphy would have never been brought up.
i’m in favor of the alex.242 scenario
“i’m in favor of the alex.242 scenario”
I am too but dont you know the Mets are a small market team???
are you saying they can’t afford the bomb?
lol
I don’t know why everone is struggling with this….there is absolutley no reason to meet these demands for either Fuentes or K-rod in this year’s market…it looks like Texas might be the Mets only competiton in terms of $$$ to spend on a closer….2 teams going after 2 players…I predict K-rod for 3 years $35M with a ton of incentives
Krod will get at least 4 years from someone…no question. Billy Wagner got a 4 year deal and BJ Ryan got a 5 year deal…theres no reason Krod will not get at least the deal Billy got when he was at age 33 and Krod is 26 now. Billy got 4 years $43 million. Krod will not sign for anything less than that and nor should he. The precedent has been set and a record-braking closer is going to look to set a new precedent, warranted or not warranted it dont matter.
That said…Fuentes will not get Billy’s contract, and nor should he either. Krod will come down in his demands after we show the perception of seriously considering Fuentes.
Krod will sign 4 years (5th year option) for 15 mil a year with incentives to increase that total. Thats 4 years 60 mil…and he gets Mariano money with the potential to earn more if he performs well.
I agree. I look for Krod to be something like 4 years 56 million with a large option and 4 million dollar buyout of the 5th year.
his agent already showed his hand by saying he would be flexible….he knows there is no demand…if the Mets get another closer, K-rod is screwed
Agreed. I would go out right now and sign a guy like Juan Cruz that COULD close. That would put even more pressure on Krod.
interesting idea about Cruz…he is a very appealing option even with a new closer. And the timing of a deal with Cruz could be a nice ploy.
The thing that pops in my head is that he’s a type-A free agent. I haven’t decided yet if he’s worth giving up those picks or if at this point we need a player of his caliber so it doesn’t even become a factor.
I would as sume that we will sign at least 1 more Type A FA. I also, as sume at this point we are not bringing Ollie back. To me Cruz is worth the pick we give up.
krod is the best reliever available via trade or free agency. he is also 7 years younger than brian fuentes. sign him fix the rest of the bullpen first then move onto other FA/trades that will probably still be out there come december and january like derek lowe, manny ramirez, holliday or another LFer.
Come to papa…
If KRod is going to be flexible and the Angels DO NOT offer him arbitration (Translation: not losing any draft picks), then the Mets should go for KRod which means you can start using your chips to address other needs and not have to worry about overpaying for JJ Putz, Brian Fuentes or Huston Street. I would have to emphasize that there should be power arms in the bullpen who are smart and whose IQ do not match that of Ambiorix Burgos. Secondly, I want the Mets to make a run at Rocco Baldelli who is a free agent (no compensation required) and platoon him in Right or Left Field… Hence, no need for Raul Ibanez who is about 37 years old. Third - the Mets should look for a young backstop (Hint: Texas Rangers - Tea Teagarden or Max Ramirez) and MAYBE trade Aaron Heilman there. Then go after either Edwin Jackson who you could probably put in the bullpen or Andy Sonnanstine (#4 or #5 starter)… Fourth - Luis Castillo with three years and $18M left for someone’s bad contract which should open up a spot to make a run at Orlando Hudson IF he really wants to become a Met; or David Eckstein who seems to have some remorse for taking more money with Toronto last year. Fourth - addressing the open spots in the rotation… If it were up to me, I’d let Oliver Perez walk and get my two draft picks instead rather than overpay him for more Jekyll and Hyde… I still feel he will not get it together and although he is a talented left hander who has not harnessed the ability to translate it to become an ace or #2 starter, he can end up like Darren Dreifort: all talent, nasty stuff, ends his career in the garbage can.
Ouch.
Darren Dreifort? That’s cold..
guys, baldelli, Catalanotto, bullpen help, K-rod, teixeira, trade delgado, get rid of castillo, that should be the moves we should make for this upcoming season..
Wow, that’s a lot of stuff
1) Did you hear that the Angles are not offering arbitration? They would be silly not to.
2) Badelli is younger than Ibanez but because of his DISEASE he won’t be able to play in half the games.
3) The Rangers want young pitching for any of their catchers. We don’t have it to give up. The O’s and the Giants seem to want to dump their catchers so look there if you think we need an upgrade
4) Hudson wants at leat 4/48 million. That would be twice as bad as the Castillo signing and are we really going to eat Castillo’s salary just to bring in Eckencrappy?
Now that I am thinking about it, Ambiorix Burgos’ value should still be good based on his age (23 or 24) and he is a power arm… Shenanigans aside, he’d have value to the Rangers as a potential closer in waiting in exchange for either Ramirez or Teagarden.
LOL, so a guy that may never get past the fact that he may have killed someone has the same value as a young catcher? Slow down. It would take Niese to get any of their young catchers.
WOW!–This is breaking news!
look at it from the right side, the phillies will finnaly be afraid of someone from the mets roster.. (i.e not to defend or make fun of the fact that he killed somebody)
look at it from the bright side, the phillies will finnaly be afraid of someone from the mets roster.. (i.e not to defend or make fun of the fact that he killed somebody)
I hate to beat a dead horse, but the Angels again will have no room for Kendry Morales (if they sign Tex) and he is certainly a capable big league 1B/LF. And now he is out of options, so he might be more available than in the past…
Let me help you beat that horse some more. It’s time for him to get a starting job. Put him in LF for now and 1B next season.
IF, I was GM I would sign both Rodriquez and C.C. (open the coffers for Citfield !!!) and win a whole bunch of 1 - 0 games!
Omar; it’s the pitching, stupid!
You cant do that with a defense that includes two of Castillo, Delgado, and Murphy on the IF.
We had a pretty solid defense last season with Delgado and Slappy playing.
I do not understand why we wouldn’t sign K-Rod, it seems inevitable at this point. We need a closer bad, he wants a decent contract (for his age, skill etc). We want to show the rest of the ML that we have fixed the problem, it will be no more easy runs in the 9th inning. Plus he’s crazy, the New York fans would love him. He’s the best out there, and we need the best. Seriously
word
As much as I’d like to get it over with, I truely believe Omar’s best option is to wait K-Rod out. I think the Mets need him and will get him by every means. But comsidering talks with teams haven’t really heated up as of this early free agent period, like everyone has said his price will come down in time. Frankly, I don’t think his price is too outrageous for how good he is, but I’ll take what we can get. I don’t mind him for 5 years…..Just not garanteed 5 ars absolutley not. The Tigers, Rangers, Angels whoever doesn’t seem too interested and competition isn’t too hot, so even though it’ll cause alot of headaches, why not wait it out for price to come down unless talks really heat up with another team.
