The Long Island Met Fan points out an article in the Daily News which notes that Bobby Ojeda may join the SNY broadcast team in 2009 in a pre and postgame studio role.

Mets Geek, no longer Rays Geek, evaluates the Mets’ plate discipline, writing:

“O-swing % is how often a player swings at pitches out of the strike zone. Castillo (who swung at a low rate of 12.64%) would have easily led all of baseball in O-Swing % if he had enough plate appearances to qualify.”

…castillo is great at laying off of bad pitches, but when he does swing it is hardly the most impressive thing i have ever seen to put it nicely…

Marty Noble at MLB.com answers fans’ questions including; “What do you think about bringing back Oliver Perez as a closer?”

…i don’t know about you, but thanks to scott boras, i feel that we have seen the last of ollie in a mets uniform…

Finally, Mark Kram of Philly.com follows financial guru Lenny Dykstra, who “was born to make money”, around for a day.

…mark kram eh, nice palindrome…

  3. LenF says:

Why blame Boras if Ollie leaves?

Boras works for the player. The player makes the decision to stay or leave.

    • rustyjr says:

ecause boras is like the emporer in the star wars movies he uses his force on the weak minded lol

    • fongulalou says:

WHAT!?!-Hey LenF, You just start following the sport?

      • LenF says:

Maybe you should follow the sport a little more closely.

When Greg Maddux wanted to stay with the Braves, he told Boras to make it happen and he turned down bigger offers the first time he was a free agent and he negotiated a deal with the Braves prior to even hitting free agency the second time.

Don’t blame Boras because his standard advice is to always test the market and take the bigger offer. If players cower to Boras that the player’s fault. The player hires the agent, can instruct the agent what to do and can fire the agent. Bottom line is that it’s the player’s decision.

If Ollie wants to stay, all he has to do is tell Boras to get the deal done. Most of these players want the bigger paycheck which is why they hire Boras… blame the player… he’s the ultimate decision maker.

Luis has the best O-Swing % because his bat NEVER LEAVES HIS SHOULDERS!

Has everyone already forgotten those horrific I’m-Doing-My-Best-Bronze-Statue-Impressions where he looked at 3 straight strikes with men on-base?!

  5. Gary Busey says:

I wish my name were Mark Kram.

  6. mookie says:

    off topic
Peter gammons said that johan should have won the cy young Nuf said.

  7. metz1 says:

bobby jenks used to throw hard wonder if he still does? clocked at 100 mph when he was in the angels system.

  8. metz1 says:

i think brian fuentes would be the best pick since hes pitched in the national league.

  9. metz1 says:

then send delgado to seattle for putz and prospects.

  10. rustyjr says:

btw way guys i heard this on the fan our former farmhand and current met killer henry owens was suspended for 50 games for failing a test for banned substances !!
comments? remember this guy was premed in college

  11. rustyjr says:

also guys i heard on stern this morning – according to sandra bernhard who is jewish and practices kaballah (why i have no idea) that a-rod went to her temple on the high holy days and carried the torah during the service !!! can u say whipped!! – and he ain’t jewish unless he’s related to juan epstein lol

  12. dominicanboy08 says:

btw guys, seeing this nats-marlins trade. I wonder if the mets could have offer a better package for those two marlins. olsen is a young lefty with potential to be better and willingham is a decent right handed bat we need. thats 2 of our needs and they were traded for nothing. thoughts?

  13. metz1 says:

seattle 94 hrs as a team dead last in the majors.

  14. metz1 says:

ok lets be foolish and wait till he cant hit anymore and get nothing for him.

    • oleosmirf says:

well considering Delgado is a FA after this year you don’t have to worry about trading him i’m sure if he has a decent year he’ll be a type A and we’ll get a first rounder.

      • metz1 says:

remember it no guarantee he a type a free agent. He hit 38 hrs this year and was a type b.

        • stickguy says:

that’s becasue ‘07 was so dismal, and it is based on 2 years. So a decent ‘09 should get him up to A hopefully.

Of course, they would likely have to offer arbitration, so who know, he could end up back in 2010!

        • rustyjr says:

u hope – but he might retire also

  15. metz1 says:

putz and fuentes would be an upgrade from what we had at the end of last year. Also if the mets can trade for putz for something less ………

  16. metz1 says:

either way the mets are going to need a new 1st baseman eventually.

  17. oleosmirf says:

for those who want Omar to sign guys ASAP. Why???, the mets need to take their time just like they did with Santana. The Mets are the only team that can come close to K-Rod’s demands so if the Mets back off the price goes down. Simple economics

Omar is gonna talk highly about Fuentes and trading for a closer and how the Mets have great prospects within the system who can do a fine job then in the end K-Rod will be a met for 4 years 48-52 with bonuses and a mutual option for a 5th. You can take that to the bank.

The one issue we need to address is replacing Perez. Boras wants the highest price and we all know Perez isn’t worth what he’s gonna get so why not pay a little bit more and get someone who is gaurenteed to get 200 innings and have an era under 3.50. Sign Derek Lowe. Those who shy away b/c of his age he didn’t become a starter until he was 29 and he’s coming off his best season. No reason to worry about him.

Also if Dye can be had for let’s say Evans, Heilman and a decent prospect (Tobi Stoner) then you have to pull the trigger.

Dye on the low end will get you 270 with 25+ HR and 80 RBI He’s clutch, he’s a leader and he hits RH. Put him behind Delgado and before Church and you have a formidable line-up while leaving the seat warm for F-Mart. Murphy can play second, bat 7th to start and if he continues to hit you move him down the order and that way he’ll develop into a better hitter.

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Delgado
    Dye
    Church
    Murphy
    Schneider/Fatso

After that all is left is a bench spot or 2, 1-2 arms for the pen, (Denny’s Reyes as the setup man and type-B FA is my preference) and Jason Marquis or Pedro (on a mostly incentive based contract) for the 5th starter.

    • Airfeet says:

sounds pretty good…i like your logic

      • stickguy says:

other than this is adding 2 more 37 YO players, which popular opinion sems to say is a bad thing to do, sure!

        Lowe for 3-4 years, no.

I do like Dye if he comes fairly cheap (as in a salary dump). Especially if they can unload Castillo too.

Something based on Vazquez and Dye for (Heilmann or Schoe) and Castillo seems like a nice start!

  18. dwillo314 says:

they should go after K-ROD and then go after relief and then go after an outfielder

  19. dwillo314 says:

the problem wasnt really the hitting…it was the pitching

    • Airfeet says:

The problem was situational hitting and the bullpen…

      • Ceetar says:

Crappy manager didn’t help with that.

      • stickguy says:

The pen was talent. Situational hitting is harder to pin down, especailly when some guys that didn’t do well at it had in the past.

So that could easiely improve in ‘09 with the same personel (via coaching, mindset, luck, law of averages, etc.)

The pen isn’t getting better without player moves.

        • therealsince86 says:

You could say that about some guys in the pen as well. A lot of those guys have had good to great years in the recent past.
Bullpens are hard to figure out, even more difficult than “clutch” hitting.

  20. bobmurphy says:

what about T Hoffman? the Pads just let him go and hes probably cheaper than KROD

  21. metsfan1 says:

I just find it hard to believe that someone is going to give Perez more than the 12 million the Mets are rumored to be willing to pay. When he is on he is on. He gives you at least 6 innings but he never goes 8 or 9 and he does throw some stinkers especially against lesser teams. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him back with the Mets next year because it will be difficult for him to find a team with a decent defense and offense that will support him. I am not sure how many games the bullpen blew for him but I also would say the offense bailed him out numerous times.

  22. Capital City Goofball says:

“What do you think about bringing Oliver Perez back as a closer?”

    That’s a joke, right?

  23. ugbmets21 says:

love the fantasy idea by both. lol

thing is, why would perez want a contract for less years and $
and why would the mets want a guy who walks everythinggg

  24. rustyjr says:

hey guys today is heilmanns 30th b-day lets be nice to him today !!

  25. rustyjr says:
