    He deserved it.

  2. guierllNO MOta says:

I cant believe Webb finished 2nd he shoulda be 5th: My order was:

    Lincecum
    Santana
    Lidge
    Sabathia
    Webb
    Hamels
    Dempster

  3. zen says:

    lincecum 137 points (23 1st)
    webb 73 points (4 1st)
    santana 55 (4 1st)

  4. mrose says:

i’m fine w/ it ..but how the heck did Webb finish second? wow

    • zen says:

webb did have 6 more win and the same # of losses.

certainly that has to do with the mets ‘pen, but it’s not like he had terrible numbers.

      • mrose says:

        i hate the wins argument
        its a joke
his #’s are worse than Santana’s except for the wins argument

        • DjDeF says:

Perfect year to combat the wins argument is 2006. Just look at NY.

Steve Trachsel had a 4.97 ERA with 15 wins
Roy Oswalt had a 2.98 ERA and was the NL leader in the category and had 15 wins

Randy Johnson had a 5.01 ERA with 17 wins
Johan had a 2.77 ERA and had 19 wins. Only 2 more wins with over 2 runs better ERA.

          Wins are a joke.

        • zen says:

the most important thing a starter does is win games.

        • DjDeF says:

So you would say Steve Trachsel and Randy Johnson were good at what they did in 2006 or lucky because they happened to have good run support?

        • RodKanehl says:

To all you guys who think wins don’t matter. guess what. You agree with our rotten GM. That’s why we don’t win. We don’t think wins matter.

        • Sylar says:

Anyone who thinks wins for a starting pitcher mean anything is an idiot.

        • zen says:

sylar, you’re level of sophistication is so impressive.

        • Sylar says:

Zen, your grammar is equally impressive.

But seriously, wins are a product of the team. They in no way, shape, or form tell how effective a pitcher is.

        • Gobias Industries says:

Exactly! I’d rather have a SP on my team with an 0-20 record but a 2.49 ERA over a SP with a 2.50 ERA but a 20-0 record any day! Because W’s mean nothin’!

Wait, no I wouldn’t. Look, I understand that a SP’s W-L record is largely dependant on his team’s offense, defense, bullpen, blah, blah, blah. There are more useful stats to measure a SP’s worth than W’s; but I wouldn’t exactly say that W’s for a SP are meaningless.

        • BillyDeeWilliams says:

          that’s a pretty terrible example.

        • Gobias Industries says:

          Ya think?

        • zen says:

          1993 ny mets: anthony young

          3.77 era!!!

          1-16 record.

        • CitizenSnips says:

If I was a pitcher who had a 2.49 ERA and my team couldn’t give me enough run support to get at least one win I’d demand a trade.

        • jeff_greenwood says:

Wins are important! The two starting pitchers are contesting with one another for the win. Are you saying that in that second to last game this season, Ricky Nolasco (who only let up 2 runs over 7 IP) deserved as much credit as if he had beaten Santana? No. In the same way, Santana lost a lot of early games because he failed to beat the pitcher opposite him (4/6, beaten by Smoltz; 5/22 beat by Hudson; 6/6, beaten by Wolf; 6/23 beaten by Felix Hernandez, etc.) Yeah, Johan had 3 or less ERs in 4 of his 7 losses, but that’s as much of a function of being outduled as it is a function of getting crappy run support.

Don’t get me wrong, I would rather have Santana than ANY other pitcher in the majors. But, Webb did have the most wins by a lot, and was 4th in Innings Pitched, a stat I consider as important as wins and ERA (the three are equal in my mind).

        • BillyDeeWilliams says:

You just made my point. Santana was tops in the league in 2 of your 3 equally important stats. Figure it out.

  5. shannon says:

I would have flipped Santana and Webb, but I’m glad Santana got 3rd.

  6. dcmetsfan says:

While I’m sure John Kruk will be disappointed, the writers made the right choice (kind of). It really could have gone either way between Santana and Lincecum. I’m just glad Webb didn’t win. But second? Man, writers are just so dumb.

Now watch Howard win the MVP.

    • BillyDeeWilliams says:

That’s exactly what I was thinking. It doesn’t make sense to argue 2nd vs. 3rd place, and I don’t think you can argue that Lincecum is a very deserving winner, but if Howard wins MVP I’m going to drown myself in the toilet.

      • helicopter ben johnson says:

        HAHA!

      • RodKanehl says:

If you’ll really drown yourslef then we will all be pulling for Howard. I guess you guys don’t think RBI’s matter just like wins don’t matter.

        • BillyDeeWilliams says:

Actually, I think that good RBI and HR stats don’t make up for being average to below average in almost all other categories.

As for wins, it’s been stated a million times, so I don’t feel the need to explain an oft-argued point to you. Winning games is more a product of your team than any other pitching stat. If you’re going to use that as the sole argument for a pitcher’s ability, then I’m certainly glad you’re not my team’s GM.

        • dcmetsfan says:

Similarly, RBI are a by-product of the team around you. Neither wins or RBI are completely useless, but they’re inferior stats compared to other metrics for evaluating pitchers and hitters,

  7. phukthephills says:

sign krod and lowe and biemel and affeldt
trade for a right handed outfielder like dye
    reyes
    murph
    beltran
    delgado
    wright
    dye
    church
    schnieder

    johan
    pelf
    lowe
    maine
someone cheap through trade like vasquez maybe

    krod
    biemel
    smith
    affeldt
    parnell
    stokes

    • mark4212 says:

if we can i’d do anything to trade Delgado. I think there needs to be way more help in the bullpen then Affeldt and Biemel. 2 guys won’t completely fix this bullpen. They need to add 3 or 4 guys and then a few “chance” guys for depth.

K-rod would be nice. Dye would be nice. I don’t mind them at all. I want Delgado gone.

  8. BillyDeeWilliams says:

I’m actually surprised Lincecum won it by such a huge margin. Thought it would’ve been a little closer, with Santana in second, but looks like I’m not qualified to make baseball related decisions.

  9. SheaVendor says:

Chris Russo had to excuse himself when he heard the news so he could run to the bathroom.

  10. whynot1 says:

Voters who put Webb before Santana made up their mind at the beginning of September and stopped paying attention to baseball.

  11. Fiya Minaya says:

Who cares if Santana finished 3rd?

    • fongulalou says:

      Exactly!—Who cares!—Maybe if Johan hadn’t pulled
himself out of so many games or not given up 2-0 leads
in games the first half he’d have gotten 5to7 more wins
and it would all have made his finishing 3rd a moot point.

      • Nordberg says:

Are you actually bashing Santana? Some people are pathetic….

      • Sylar says:

        Fongalou, your joking right??

The man lead the NL in INNINGS PITCHED. He was also 6th in the MLB in Pitcher Abuse Points. What, did you want his arm to fall off??

Anyone blaming Santana is just wrong.

    • It would be nice to win something this year!

  12. Nordberg says:

I did the Mypos dance of joy upon hearing that Lidge didn’t win. Thank God!

Phillies fans in my office are driving me crazy…

  13. wallybackman'sfire says:

A stat I would like to see more often for starting pitcher’s is how many wins were blown by the bullpen after the starter leaves the game. And also what the team’s record is in games started by the pitcher.

I’d be curious to see where Santana stands in relation to the other starting pitchers last year in those 2 categories.

    • alex.242 says:

Lincecum was good for a 50 win team… no pressure at all, just go out there and ensure yourself a victory, now if he was to do that in NY where every lil thing is under the microscope then he’d get my respect.. look at all the things santana did after critizism.. beat the phillies after getting booo in his first home start, shut out the pirates after coming out in the 8th inning against phillies, beat the phillies when we were on the verge of getting swept, pitch a shut out on a 3 days rest in the 161st game with our season on the line, HE’S THE MAN… lincecum is a nice pitcher but this is a robbery!!!! NEW YORK IS A HATER MARKET BY THE MEDIA!!!!

      • Sylar says:

This isn’t the MVP award. “Pressure” should have nothing to do with it.

Lincecum deserved to win, but Santana should have finished 2nd.

  14. nuts says:

    reyes
    murphy
    wright
    many ramirez
    beltran
    delgado
    burrel
    russel martin

    santana
    sabathia
    sheets
    pelf
    burnett

    k rod
    fuentes
    hoffmann
    pepelbon
    jenks

  15. fl1pm0de84 says:

    Santana deserved the cy.

One fact that is being overlooked is that Lincecum had the luxury of pitching in the NL West. Take away his 6 starts against the anemic padres (3 earned runs in 43.1 innings!), and his ERA is over 3.00.

Lincecum had more K’s. Johan had more quality starts, more IPs, a better ERA, and a lower WHIP.

  16. bucknersankles says:

HAS ANYONE LOOKED AT THE “09 SCHEDULE ?
IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GET IT DONE EARLY. IN MAY WE HAVE A STRETCH OF 20 CONSECUTIVE GAMES FINISHING IN THE WEST COAST THEN WE GET ONE DAY OFF BEFORE WE GO PLAY THE REDSOX IN BOSTON
    THAT MY FRIENDS IS BS.
I CHECKED THE PHILLIE SCHEDULE AND THEY END THE SEASON PLAYING 20 STRAIGHT, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BEAR DOWN EARLY.

  17. garcloz says:

This is seriously a joke. Let’s compare some numbers:

    Johan Santana:
    SO: 206
    IP: 234.3
    XIP: 211.8
    WHIP: 1.148
    ERA+: 166
    PRAA: 33
    PRAR: 94
    DERA: 3.09
    NRA: 3.03

    Tim Lincecum:
    SO: 265
    IP: 227.0
    XIP: 207
    WHIP: 1.172
    ERA+: 167
    PRAA: 38
    PRAR: 102
    DERA: 2.84
    NRA: 2.87

So not counting DERA, NRA, and SO Santana has better numbers. Santana has played with a better defense (DERA > NRA) but his PRAA and PRAR are lower, indicating less runs scored against him. Also look at XIP, which account for importance of innings: Santana pitched in more games where his pitching actually mattered. When someone loses the Cy young award because of SO that is quite quite sad. Especially since Santana has a better WHIP.

Don’t get me started on Webb who only won second because writers are too lazy to look at any stat of any significance but Santana losing out this year is just nuts. I cannot wait for Ryan Howard to win the MVP over Pujos for another mistake by the sportswriters. They can’t get the HOF voting done right and they still can’t get the Cy young and MVP award done either.

    • oldmanclemens says:

yes, because strikeouts mean nothing to a pitcher. they dont help you get out of jams or anything. they dont make your defense irrelevant. they dont compensate for a slightly higher WHIP. they dont mean anything.

  18. DjDeF says:

*he busted all over the mic

  19. JarvisJanesAddiction says:

You mean “The nut job busted a nu…….”……oh, never mind!
