You just made my point. Santana was tops in the league in 2 of your 3 equally important stats. Figure it out.

yes, because strikeouts mean nothing to a pitcher. they dont help you get out of jams or anything. they dont make your defense irrelevant. they dont compensate for a slightly higher WHIP. they dont mean anything.

This is seriously a joke. Let's compare some numbers:

Johan Santana:
SO: 206
IP: 234.3
XIP: 211.8
WHIP: 1.148
ERA+: 166
PRAA: 33
PRAR: 94
DERA: 3.09
NRA: 3.03

Tim Lincecum:
SO: 265
IP: 227.0
XIP: 207
WHIP: 1.172
ERA+: 167
PRAA: 38
PRAR: 102
DERA: 2.84
NRA: 2.87

So not counting DERA, NRA, and SO Santana has better numbers. Santana has played with a better defense (DERA > NRA) but his PRAA and PRAR are lower, indicating less runs scored against him. Also look at XIP, which account for importance of innings: Santana pitched in more games where his pitching actually mattered. When someone loses the Cy young award because of SO that is quite quite sad. Especially since Santana has a better WHIP.

Don't get me started on Webb who only won second because writers are too lazy to look at any stat of any significance but Santana losing out this year is just nuts. I cannot wait for Ryan Howard to win the MVP over Pujos for another mistake by the sportswriters. They can't get the HOF voting done right and they still can't get the Cy young and MVP award done either.

Wins are important! The two starting pitchers are contesting with one another for the win. Are you saying that in that second to last game this season, Ricky Nolasco (who only let up 2 runs over 7 IP) deserved as much credit as if he had beaten Santana? No. In the same way, Santana lost a lot of early games because he failed to beat the pitcher opposite him (4/6, beaten by Smoltz; 5/22 beat by Hudson; 6/6, beaten by Wolf; 6/23 beaten by Felix Hernandez, etc.) Yeah, Johan had 3 or less ERs in 4 of his 7 losses, but that's as much of a function of being outduled as it is a function of getting crappy run support.

Don't get me wrong, I would rather have Santana than ANY other pitcher in the majors. But, Webb did have the most wins by a lot, and was 4th in Innings Pitched, a stat I consider as important as wins and ERA (the three are equal in my mind).

HAS ANYONE LOOKED AT THE "09 SCHEDULE ?
IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GET IT DONE EARLY. IN MAY WE HAVE A STRETCH OF 20 CONSECUTIVE GAMES FINISHING IN THE WEST COAST THEN WE GET ONE DAY OFF BEFORE WE GO PLAY THE REDSOX IN BOSTON
THAT MY FRIENDS IS BS.
I CHECKED THE PHILLIE SCHEDULE AND THEY END THE SEASON PLAYING 20 STRAIGHT, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BEAR DOWN EARLY.

Santana deserved the cy.

One fact that is being overlooked is that Lincecum had the luxury of pitching in the NL West. Take away his 6 starts against the anemic padres (3 earned runs in 43.1 innings!), and his ERA is over 3.00.

Lincecum had more K's. Johan had more quality starts, more IPs, a better ERA, and a lower WHIP.

If I was a pitcher who had a 2.49 ERA and my team couldn't give me enough run support to get at least one win I'd demand a trade.
