News: NL Cy Young Award at 2 pm Today
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 11, 2008 9:23 am

The National League Cy Young Award will be announced today at 2 pm EDT.

According to a survey from Rasmussen Reports in mid-October, 19 percent of baseball fans said Johan Santana should win the award over Brandon Webb, Tim Lincecum and Ryan Dempster.

However, according to Jim Molony of MLB.com, Lincecum and Webb are the favorites to win, while Dempster, Brad Lidge, CC Sabathia and Edison Volquez are listed as ‘dark horses.’

Molony does not list Santana as a ‘favorite’ or a ‘dark horse,’ instead he lists him among 10 others as only an ‘honorable mention.’

The way I see it, Santana should win the Cy Young Award because no other pitcher in the league was on the mound longer, and no other pitcher had a lower ERA over the course of the entire season – and to me, that’s what it’s all about.

It will be Lincecum because the voters like his High Ks, and the number of wins he had a bad team.

I know wins are not a telling stat.. but when you get 25% of your team’s wins by yourself..that’s gonna get noticed.

But to not include Johan in the discussion like this guy does is just plain stupid.

  2. shannon says:

I agree. I don’t understand why Santana wouldn’t be higher up in the rankings for Cy Young– look at his game log. He’s been incredible all year, especially at the end when the Mets needed him the most. He’s consistent, a strikeout pitcher, had the lowest ERA, pitched the most innings, etc. I just don’t get it……

CC Sabathia? Really? I get he was remarkable for the Brewers in the 2nd half, but you can’t forget the first half. If voters disregard the first half for him, they should disregard the first half for Delgado (and he would be ranked high for the MVP). Yes/no?

  3. guierllNO MOta says:

he certainly should be in the top 2 cause he was much better than Webb except for win total and Lidge only pitched 1/3 of the innings he did, but of course, was amazing doing it….

but cmon, Lincecum deserves this, his numbers were just flat out amazing and even though Johan lost a lot of wins some due to bullpen and more due to terrible offenzive showings, lincecum won a ton of games for a team that was basically a AAA team..that is impressive.

I am not saying Johan doesnt deserve the praise and that he wasnt one of the top 3 in baseball all year along with lincecum and lee, but honestly those guys were better and the cy young is about stats unlike the mvp which is about value+stats,

    • kingman 26 says:

      1–Lincecum
      2–Lidge
      3–Johan
      4–Webb
      5–CC

I love Johan, but I think Lincecum and Lidge were a little better this year. If Webb wins, the award is kind of meaningless….

And Willie Hernandez and Gagne won CYs when they had entire seasons without blowing saves, so Lidge winning would be fair too I think….

  4. shannon says:

that being said, I hope Lincecum wins.

  5. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

The Giants better not have screwed up Lincecum by over pitching him at the end to win a stupid personal award. Pushing a kid like that was negligent.

    • Gina says:

I agree, and I imagine they’re going to be regretting it pretty soon. They have way overworked him the last two seasons, and for what? It’s not like they were competing anyway.

  6. steadyeddie says:

    Keep the awards…
    gimme da rings….

  7. dcmetsfan says:

I have no problem with Lincecum winning, or even Lidge. But if Brandon Webb wins the Cy Young, the writers should be stripped of all voting privileges.

    • kingman 26 says:

      I agree 100%.

    • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

The Writers gave Edison Volquez ROY votes yesterday even thought he WASN’T A ROOKIE. I think they should overhaul the system for voting.

Haha, pick the top blog from each team and the owner gets to vote on who the awards go to.

I guarantee Matt wouldn’t screw up his ballot.

  8. C Dubb says:

Santana had more innings pitched, a better ERA, a better WHIP, more complete games, and more shutouts than Lincecum.

You can make a pretty good case for Lincecum to win (and I think he will), but Santana is more deserving.

    • alex.242 says:

santan is your 2008 CY YOUNG WINNER!! voters locked that vote when he pitched that shutout on 3 days rest…

      • alex.242 says:

and please don’t say sabathia did the same thing… even thought he did he only did it for half a season in the nl.. lincecum was lost in the west were is obvous nobody cares! although he is a stud..

  9. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

    My prediction is…
    1 lincecum
    2 santana
    3 webb
    4 lidge

  10. mookie says:

Anbody who thinks lincecum should win it over Santana are idiots. yes i said it. Santana pretty much has the same stats as lincecum, but Giants pitcher never had any sort of stress considering his team was out of it from the get go. Furthermore, when Lincecum faced Santana , Santana beat him head to head. Everybody looks at numbers but nobody ever really takes the time to disect them.

    • alex.242 says:

Mookie.. santana didn’t beat lincecum.. pelfrey did..

    • kingman 26 says:

Actually Mookie, it is kind of silly to use the word idiot here….Their ERA and WHIP were just about identical….Johan got a little more run support overall, even though the Mets were 2nd in runs scored and the Giants were 15th. Johan got his wins for a far superior team.

I think they both had great seasons, clearly the 2 best for starters in the NL.

  11. fyffem says:

They should take into account that he should have won 25 games were it not for the “bullpen”.

  12. guigsy says:

Johan will not win…no chance. Plus, we all saw this postseason who the best lefthander in baseball is…you may know him, hes a world champion and also postseason MVP….postseason

    • mrose says:

umm…you must be a philly fan

    • C Dubb says:

You’re right…Randy Johnson. We’re so glib. Here we were saying Johan Santana.

    • shannon says:

johan santana >>>>>>>>>>>>> cole hamels. sorry bud.

      • losmets7 says:

You forgot an extra >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Don’t worry. It happens to the best of us. Excpet me.

      • alex.242 says:

Don’t get me wrong, hammels is a beast, arguably top 3 lef hander in the game, but give due when is due, SANTANA is the not only the best left hander in the game, but the BEST pitcher in the game..

    • mrose says:

you should probably look at stats for the regular season being we can’t compare post seasons since the mets weren’t in it. (go ahead and take a jab about that) the point here is that Santana had better overall stats than Hamels.

    • whynot1 says:

If Hamels gets 7 days rest between most starts next regular season he might win the Cy Young.

    • CitizenSnips says:

Postseason stats mean what? Look at Beckett this year.

    • C Dubb says:

I was really impressed by Cole Hamels when he faced the Mets this season.

In 2 games against them, he held them to only 2 victories, 17 hits, and 8 earned runs in 12 innings pitched. Really just shut us down.

  13. losmets7 says:

*sigh* If only everybody thought like you, Matt. Well, at least the voters.

  14. whynot1 says:

I have no problem with Lincecum winning, but Johan”s pressure wins, with a shutout on 3 days rest, should count for something, even for the Cy Young – I don”t think Lincecum at this point could have done that, while Johan could have had similar stats with SF.

  15. CitizenSnips says:

Knowing the voters this is how it will break down (their reactions in ( ) ):

    1. Webb (Most wins – most important stat)
    2. Sabathia (OMG complete games)
    3. Lidge (Perfect season! This is a little more respectable but still)
    4. Lincecum (Let’s give him something to work for)
    5. Santana (Only 16 wins. Must’ve pictched ‘ok’ this year)

    • mrose says:

      sadly…you are probably right

      • fongulalou says:

Don’t like players from awful teams winning CY Young
or MVP as they put up numbers in situations where
there is no pressure on them.

        • alex.242 says:

voters are a bunch of idiots!! how can a guy like jayson starks vote!!!! he’s one of the biggest morons there are!!!!! is a shame real baseball players need to seat and wait for this idiots to vote them into the hall of fame.. that is LUDACRIS!!!

        • kingman 26 says:

LOL–way to work Ludacris in there!!

  16. Cliff Pink Floyd says:

well, if Johan doesn’t win then we keep $250,000 in incentives money. i believe thats the figure.

  17. Reyes es el Rey says:

Santana and Lincecum have nearly identical stats until you get to Ks, and then Lincecum blows Johan away.

I think Lincecum deserves it, but Santana would be a good choice too. Those two are clearly head and shoulders above everyone else.

Of course, the BBWAA will screw it up and give it to Webb or Lidge or even CC. And then next week they’ll give Pujols’ MVP to Ryan Howard and we’ll all be reminded why the vast majority of baseball writers are a joke.

  18. metsftw says:

i’d vote lincecum without question. his FIP was a full run better than johan’s. there’s more stats out there than ERA/WHIP.

    • fongulalou says:

Sabathia could well get though based on his Sutcliffe
type second half. Plus he carried that team into the playoffs
for the first time in a quarter century.

  19. reyes_7 says:

    Johan Santana
    2008 CY Young !
forget it man he’s the best pitcher right now . if only we had a better bullpen !

  20. yosi says:

That article is idiotic. The stats provided in it are wrong. It says Lincecum had an NL best ERA which is clearly not the case.

    • mark4212 says:

This is why these awards are ridiculous. It’s all favoritism. Nobody actually sits down and looks at the film. Nobody sits and takes into account the situations someone did something (i.e an extreme playoff race) Post-season stats aren’t included. It’s a Joke. Same as the Gold Glove. The only ones that aren’t a joke are the hitting awards, because they are the only ones based on True actual Numbers.

And don’t even get met started on the stupidity of the All-Star Balloting. WOW MLB can’t get anything right. It’s almost as bad as the BCS.

      • CitizenSnips says:

I agree about the AS Balloting, as well as the TYIB awards. Whose bright idea was it not to have a cap on how many times you can vote? Imagine if the Presidental ballots were like that. Vote as many times as you want!

        • alex.242 says:

guys, i just saw a poll on ESPN that asked, who will win the NL CY YOUNG.. so far out of 4677 ppl that voted this is the %:

          Brad Lidge- 15%
          Tim Lincecum- 28%
          CC Sabathia- 36%
          Johan Santana- 8%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
          Brandon Webb- 13%

it goes to show how much of a hatred ppl have for anything new york!! coz only a moron would vote either lidge or webb ahead of superman…
