Relief Pitcher: Mets with Mild Interest in Street
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 11, 2008 12:43 pm

Following yesterday’s trade, which sent RHP Huston Street to the Colorado, Scott Miller of CBSSports.com said the Rockies are prepared to turn around and trade him, ‘though to which team he wasn’t sure.’

In a post today on his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman writes:

“The Mets have had only mild interest in Street (they are much more intrigued by Fuentes), but are sure to talk to the Rockies.  I would think the Cardinals might be the team more likely to make a strong run at obtaining Street.”

In 63 appearances for Oakland in 2008, the 25–year-old Street was 7–5 with a 3.73 ERA in 70 innings, during which opponents hit .229 against him and struck out 69 times.

He had a 2.88 ERA in 2007, and a 3.31 ERA in 2006, during which he also had 37 saves.

I sure hope it’s just Omar doing a good job bluffing but all this junk with Fuentes is begining to get to me. Good lord please don’t sign this average closer. Go out and spend the extra 1-2 years and 3-5 million more per year and get Krod.

    • steadyeddie says:

Closers are like blond cheerleaders, lad. What you love about them today; you hate tomorrow. Be careful….

      • therealsince86 says:

But it’s still better to have the blond cheerleader for a little while instead of the old fat one.

        • HOFMets57 says:

          Agreed.

Almost every closer goes through ‘peaks and valley’s. The one’s that don’t are the PREMIER closers (Rivera, Papelbon, Nathan, K-ROD). They’re consistently relieving pressure off the rest of the bullpen/starters/offense. They get paid to do something VERY FEW pitchers can do (as evidenced by our merry-go-round horror show in 2007).

          I wouldn’t mind a Street-K-ROD 8th-to-9th inning tandem, though…

        • Weird analogy, but I agree. The more I look at Fuentes, the more I am discouraged from signing him. His age and past failures scare me, but then again nobody wants to spend 5/$75 on a closer either.

Tough decision, and I’m sure Omar is gonna get grilled either way. However, our best move is to not make a move too soon and try and drop K-Rod’s asking price. If it won’t drop, then we’re in a really tough situation.

        • kistics says:

Not considering money, obvious choice is KRod. But I do not think that Omar/Wilpons will pay $75M for a closer.

Listening to KRod’s agent this morning, it seems that their ‘Ideal’ contract is $75M for 5 years, but the market is pretty small for closers this year, and the Mets might get him cheaper than we think.

If the Mets go out and sign him for 4 years $13M per year, I would not mind that at all.

  2. therealsince86 says:

I do wonder what Street’s value is to the Rockies? Will he be their closer or setup-man. Did they intend on dealing him the entire time.
Will something like Heilman and Parnell get it done?

  3. Cactus says:

Trade for street, put maine in the bullpen. Yes you’d have the silly “Maine Street” joke, but the end of the game would be taken care of. Then you can go out and spend money on starting pitching.

    • therealsince86 says:

Problem with that is you already have 2 holes in the rotation. Then you would have 3 question marks in the rotation and one in the BP.

      • HOFMets57 says:

        Keep Maine in the rotation.

Try and sign Lowe AND another FA starter. Omar should NOT go into 2008 relying on a 21-yr.old pitcher with less than 10 games under his belt. Niese isn’t ready yet and should be the spot starter, not our 5th.

Then if Maine continues to regress (pitch count speaking), move him into the bullpen later in the season and bring up Niese. Hopefully, John figures it out, though. His outings last year were at times unbearable to watch (92 pitches in the 4th inning)…

      • Cactus says:

maine is a question mark in the rotation already. he hasn’t been able to pitch well for a full season yet. the guy is a bullpen arm.

        • kistics says:

Maine is a pitcher who can get wins without having his best stuff. We all saw that last two years. He does have arm problems, but he did stay healthy most of the season. He is perfectly capable of winning 15 games and keep his ERA under 4. That’s very good for #4 in your rotation (if the Mets sign a FA pitcher this offseason).

Another thing that I like about Maine is that he is very tough and grinds through games even if he doesn’t have his best stuff.

  4. bigchart333 says:

im tellin u, they gotta get a Street, or a Gregg or someone like that to SET UP…it’s gonna wind up bein K Rod or Fuentes, im pretty confident on that. But closer wasnt an issue with us really, (besides a few blown ones here and there by billy) until wags went down. And even still, it was our MIDDLE RELIEF that was terrible. Getting a guy that has closed in the past (or CAN in the event of another injury) to set up is HUGE…if we get k-rod, i’d still take street as our 8th inning man

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

agreed. the 9th inning is important but we struggled just as much in the 7th and 8th. getting a closer should be the first of many steps taken to fix the bullpen.

    • therealsince86 says:

That’s why I have been saying Eddie Guardado, he knows how to pitch and has closed many games in the past. He would be cheap and would not cost a pick.

      • alex.242 says:

good point real, eddie would do good as well, if we get him, or bielmen, cruz, even gregg for the seventh we will have a new and improved 7th and 8th bullpen.. and guys don’t be fooled about we didn’t struggle as much in the 9th coz by then we’d already had BLOWN the lead in the 7th or the 8th!! don’t forget WAGNER had 7 blown saves at the all star break.. the whole bullpen was a problem!!

        • ArmandoReynoso says:

umm, we keep screaming don’t sign any old guys!!! and we’re pushing them to sign Guardado (38 yo)???

  5. bigchart333 says:

i’ve been a everyday eddie fan for a while now, but he is gettin up there in years. I like him on our team, but i’d definitely focus on a k-rod/street, fuentes/gregg tandem FIRST…then look to move heilman and show/feli (maybe all 3)…THEN grab everyday eddy…and i’d sign ayala again too

Personally, i’d liek to see a 7 man bullpen of
    Krod
    Street
    Sanchez
    Show
    Smith
    Parnell
Beimel/Guardado/Ayala (maybe biemel or guardado cuz he’s lefty)

  6. how bout we trade for Street, sign Fuentes, sign K-Rod, sign Hoffman, and sign Wood so that we can have the best closer by committee ever!! :D it’s like a starting rotation but in the closer role…brilliant!

  7. BullpenHelp says:

As my name suggests… fixing the Bullpen has to be the priority this offseason. Sure, you have to sign at least one starting pitcher as well… but the bullpen needs an entire overhaul. At this point, we have a LOOGY and a ROOGY. And that’s it. We have no closer. We have no 8th inning set up man. We have no 7th inning bridge.

Just signing K-Rod to a big contract ain’t getting it done. You look over at Philly and they’ve got Lidge, Madson, Romero, Eyre and Durbin. They never have to worry about the 7th, 8th or 9th innings. That’s what we need.

    • its hard to be a met fan says:

K-rod would be a pretty nice start

    • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

      Is Turk Wendell available?

    • bigchart333 says:

exactly my point. A bullpen should be COMPLETE
      Closer
      Set up
      Roogy
      Loogy
      swing guy (like duaner)
      long man/mop up man

simply grabbin K rod WONT do it…
PLUS, guys like heilman and show and even feliciano, even though they still do have a couple fans, probably should NOT pitch in NY again…they will be booed out of the stadium at the first sign of trouble. We need an OVERHAUL.
I still like Show as a STRICTLY loogy (even if it means him pitching 25 innings all year), but he has value to other teams too. You have to jetison the garbage and bring in new life

It’s gotta be a 6 player swing–those 3 HAVE TO GO and we have to bring in 3 new arms, including a CLOSER who is proven and intimidates the opponent and has give you a sense that the game is OVER when they come in

    • ravi3 says:

Yet, just one year ago, none of those guys were nearly as reliable. Bullpen performance fluctuates, as pitchers only get very small sample sizes. There are talented pitchers in house who nursed injuries last year, but are young and have a track record of success. While not counting these guys to turn it around quickly, outside acquisitions should be complimented by guys in house (i.e. Heilman)

  8. bobabouy01 says:

Keep up the poker face Omar……everything seems to be falling into place !!
Go after Lowe and maybe Garland…Biemel and K-Rod…..that would be very nice !! :-)
    Santana
    Maine
    Lowe
    Garland
    Pelfrey

    • its hard to be a met fan says:

Lowe AND Garland is doubtful….as a matter of fact, Garland has never been linked to the Mets offseason plans…Lowe looks like a real possibility…then a low cost 5th starter to battle Niese for the last spot….after signing K-rod they will probably look to move Heilman and Show in “change of scenery” deals…then they can round out the remaining pieces of the bullpen and the last bench spot (probably a middle infielder)

  9. FlightFromHouston says:

Street’s only 25? feels like he’s been around since the 90s.

  10. FlightFromHouston says:

How About Street in the McDoweel role and Fuentes in the Orosco role?

  11. BullpenHelp says:

Jon Heyman at SI.com writes this today:

“GM Ken Williams, perhaps baseball’s biggest risk taker, is listening to offers on closer Jenks (the Mets are trying to swing a deal for him before doling out free-agent riches to Fuentes or Rodriguez)”

    Wonder why I haven’t heard this before…

    • its hard to be a met fan says:

Jenks, Vazquez & Dye for Heilman, Castillo, Murphy & Parnell

      • ArmandoReynoso says:

throw in Niese and FMart, and the white sox might actually take us seriously — the Sox are not solely in business to help the Mets re-stock — taking our castoffs in return their closer, a quality starter, and a power hitting corner OF (I think you might be really over estimating Murphy’s value in the eyes of opposing teams, too).

        • SPINK3 says:

the conversation for jenks starts with fmart..the guy is 27 and has been an elite closer for a couple yrs and still has 3 yrs left before free agency

      • BullpenHelp says:

I almost stopped reading when I got to Castillo.

I hope you all get it out of your heads that the Mets will be able to deal Luis Castillo. No one wants him for the ungodly contract he’s making. No one.

So you’re dealing Heilman for Jenks
        Murphy for Dye
        And Parnell for Vazquez

And you make the White Sox take Castillo off your hands?

Ludicrous doesn’t even begin to describe this.

    • kistics says:

      Sounds very interesting.

    • Coolpapabell says:

Weird just weird. Why would Heyman even bother writing that if we all know that Jenks to the Mets can’t happen. I wonder if it was another Mets leak to mess with Fuentes and K-Rod.

  12. kistics says:

Do you guys think that Omar is pretending to go for Fuentes to lower KRod’s value. After all, the Mets are one of only few teams that can meet his salary demand.

  13. Coolpapabell says:

Heyman wrote that we have been looking into acquiring Bobby Jenks. I don’t see what we could give up for that package. I wonder if Omar is playing with K-Rod’s head again.

  14. Joe D says:

Some of you need to layoff the Koolaid. If you really believe that GM’s are calling Heyman to discuss their strategies and potential negotiations, I have a bridge to nowhere to sell you in Alaska.

All Heyman does is throw a hundred pieces of baloney at the wall each week and if just one of them sticks, he’s a freaking genius.

    Gimme a break…
