Relief Pitcher: The Mets have their Choice
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 11, 2008 10:32 am

In a recent report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes:

“The sudden availability of Hoffman raises the possibility that one or more of the top free-agent closers might be left without a high payroll slot — and leaves the Mets almost certain to find a quality replacement for the injured Billy Wagner.

“The Mets can choose among Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes, Kerry Wood and Hoffman.  No other team considers the signing of a closer to be as high a priority.  Not the Tigers, not the Cardinals, not the Angels and certainly not the Padres.

“The Tigers do not intend to pay top dollar for a closer. The Cardinals want a stopgap until Chris Perez is ready to assume the role full time. The Angels and Cubs also could replace closers from within, and the Indians ultimately could be left with a bargain.”

Rosenthal also reports on the Braves effort to acquire Jake Peavy from the Padres, details of the Nationals-Marlins trade from yesterday, and other notes from the Hot Stove.

i LOVE the sound of this.. Lock up K Rod Omar and move onto the next task.. we know you have trouble doing more than one thing at a time.

    • BigWillie says:

how about 2 - krod: 4/55 with option, wood 3/30

get it done and concentrate on that LF vacancy. I also like the idea of Dye or another team’s productive salary dump.

      SS Reyes
      2B Murphy
      3B Wright
      CF Beltran
      1B Delgado
      LF Dye
      C Schneider
      RF Church

      Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, *Lowe ,*Garland
Krod, Wood, Duaner, Heilman, Smith, Feliciano, Schoenweiss

OBV 1 or more of those BP arms should be traded/dropped

Let the kids develop in the minors. System is looking strong with: Fmart, Flores, Evans, Davis, Havens, Pena, Carp, Niese, Holt, Muniz, Parnell, Kunz, Stoner

      • BigWillie says:

anybody who says this team (collective) is not better than the Phillies is crazy. Phils have barren system and 0 pitching.

FYI - they haven’t drafted to help in the near future

2008 - 3 hs OF followed by 3 hs SP
2007 - 1 college lefty (got pounded in High A coming off injury) and 2 hs INF
2006 - hs SP (Drabek - nowhere close), hs SS, college OF, SS

I have a much better idea for Closer …. Barack Obama!

No track record, no experience…. who cares!!!!

Yes, I am officially on the Obama band wagon. And what I have learned from the Democrats is that all that stuff is meaningless.

Hey, I have seen Obama with a Sox hat on, so I know he knows something about baseball… and that good enough for me!

Plus, the Mets could offer if a sweeet four year deal that is much more than he would make as President, but reasonable to the payroll.

Look how easily he made it through the debates. I betcha he do the same in the nonth inning. He is a born closer!

    What do you think?

    • Prismo says:

Get off Metsblog. Go away, seriously. Bury your head in some dirt and don’t come out.

Matt - you should really delete posts like his.

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

honestly dude..nobody wants your political opinion on this website..in fact judging by what you just said nobody wants you political opinion on any website.

      • fongulalou says:

Plus in B.O.s world we wouldn’t be able to sign anyone.
We’d all have to have the same payroll.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

please, there are hundreds of political blogs you can go to and write whatever you want. this is a sports blog we are all mets fans here talking mets/mlb topics and politics should play ZERO role.

        • mikey_FF says:

I think this guy was clearly trying to make a joke. Maybe using politics was a bad choice for a joke … but he was making a joke.

          Try to lighten up guys.

        • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

          I am talking about baseball.

          We need a closer.

And the above suggestion happens to be more practical than many I have seen here.

        • kingman 26 says:

The joke was not funny in the slightest, regardless of one’s political opinion…I for one appreciate the sports debate and non-divisive joking around about non-controversial topics….

If this clown is going to make political jokes, my one request would be that they are at least remotely funny!

        • mikey_FF says:

“I for one appreciate the sports debate and non-divisive joking around about non-controversial topics….”

You sound kind of like a politician! :)

        • kingman 26 says:

          LOL!!

I figured I had to put that in because Rusty Jr and I can get going on some movie-quote tangents sometimes…..so I am guilty of non-sports nonsense sometimes, but I do avoid political comments!

        • mikey_FF says:

I am neither for or against the posting of movie quotes on Metsblog. Hows that sound?

        • kingman 26 says:

Sounds like you are ready to run for Metsblog President–and you get my vote!!

As Willy Wonka once so wisely said,

“A little nonsense now and then, cherished by the wisest men.”

        • mikey_FF says:

Thanks for your endorsement … even if I’m not qualified at all. As Obi Wan once said, “Who’s the more foolish: The fool, or the fool who follows him?”

  3. godlylik says:

screw k-rod, no1 wants him for a reason, he wants to much money to walk people and squeak out of an inning, we don’t need another benitez or looper, just go a sign fuentes, or bring kunz up already. i’m sick of all this k-rod bs, everyone will be elated when we get him, and then he will blow a bunch of saves because 1 run ball games aren’t his thing….

    • BiggieSmalls says:

because 1 run ball games aren’t his thing….

are you kidding? You might want to check his Clutch stats before making such a silly comment. The guy thrives in late and close situations

    • its hard to be a met fan says:

yeah Kunz is the answer….he can’t even get people out in the AFL….but he is better than K-rod

    • phukthephills says:

where do you get that 1 run ball games arent his thing??? that makes no sense at all….this guy is one of the top closers in the entire major leagues right now and is only 26

    • brapp says:

Please say that you are kidding. Krod is much better than Fuentes and kunz was over hyped way to much. I saw a thing on kunz the other day that said be might be a situational pitcher at best. He’s not even close to being ready. As for Fuentes his numbers last year were comparable to Krod but overall I got to go with the guy that’s 6 years younger and an era of a run and a half better a game. I think people have to keep in mind that Krod has done this on a competive team in the AL as well.

  4. steadyeddie says:

I predict (not happily) the Nats will be next seasons’ Rays.
    Put it in the books…

  5. mr.gee21 says:

Oh heck, let’s sign two of them.

That way we have an 8th inning stopper, and a 9th inning stopper.

Or, as other teams call it, a bullpen!

  6. phukthephills says:

what would you guys prefer for krod…
5 yrs 13 mil per yr
    or
4 yrs 15 mil per yr

  7. oleosmirf says:

for those who want to lock it up quickly. Why???, the mets need to take their time just like they did with Santana. The Mets are the only team that can come close to his demands so if the Mets back off the price goes down. Simple economics

Omar is gonna talk highly about Fuentes and trading for a closer and how the Mets have great prospects within the system who can do a fine job

then in the end K-Rod will be a met for 4 years 48-52 with bonuses and a mutual option for a 5th. You can take that to the bank.

Also if Dye can be had for let’s say Evans, Heilman and a decent prospect (Tobi Stoner) then you have to pull the trigger.

Dye on the low end will get you 270 with 25+ HR and 80 RBI He’s clutch, he’s a leader and he hits RH. Put him behind Delgado and before Church and you have a formidable line-up while leaving the seat warm for F-Mart. Murphy can play second, bat 7th and develop into a better hitter with no pressure so when Dye leaves they don’t lose a beat.

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Delgado
    Dye
    Church
    Murphy
    Schneider/Castro

    • phukthephills says:

dye is really not worth all three of those guys.

      • oleosmirf says:

he batted .292 with 34 HR and 96 RBI. The Sox want to get rid of his salary. We are looking to get rid of Heilman but if Chicago lets him start he would be a nice addition and Evans and Stoner are nothing special

    • alex.242 says:

How about this lineup if we get DYE and TEIXEIRA:

      Reyes
      Murphy
      Beltran
      Teixeira
      Wright
      Dye
      Church
      Murphy
      Schneider/Castro

      • oleosmirf says:

        we can’t get Teixera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he’s too expensive the only way we get teixera is if Luis Ayala is our closer next year

        • alex.242 says:

OMG!! if we get him and K-rod, trade delgado and get rid of castillo don’t you think we’d spent enuff for this year and next we won’t have to as much? our payroll should be at around 150 millions.. we DO have the money to spend, why not spend it in young good players to compromised reyes and wright.. another reason why i wanna get rid of delgado is coz that way WRIGHT can be the leader moving forward!!!!

        • oleosmirf says:

by adding K-Rod and Teixeira and subtracting Delgado and Castillo you still add 150 Mil to the payroll and then you have to pay the luxury tax something the Mets won’t do.

plus do you really think the Mets can outbid the Yanks???

  8. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

I think the Mets should sue Billy for the rest of his contract, and then sign KRod for 5 years/75 mil
