Relief Pitcher: Trevor Hoffman, not on Padres
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 11, 2008 9:00 am

“Trevor Hoffman will not return to the Padres for 2009,” reported Buster Olney on ESPN.com last night.

According to Olney, the Padres pulled back their contract offer of $4 million for 2009 to Hoffman, who is eligible for free agency this fall.

…this is good news for the Mets…not because i think they should or will sign hoffman…but, because, teams who will not spend on Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes, but who need a closer, like the Indians, Tigers, Rockies and Cardinals, hoffman will join a column of low-cost solutions like Bobby Jenks, Jose Valverde, J.J. Putz, Kevin Gregg and Huston Street

and with news yesterday, here, that the Angels have no intention of bringing back K-Rod, suddenly the Mets are in a good position to sign a closer, and keep talent to use in a deal for another position, like a starting pitcher

as for hoffman as a solution for the Mets, i have no interest…he’s not the same pitcher he once was, and i want no part of a closer on the last leg of his career, switching cities and coasts for the first time, especially considering his reputation in big games over the last few years

Agreed on Hoffman.. he has no fastball.. so he can’t setup his change… he’s terrible.

      Definitely ‘NO’ on Hoffman.

It seems like the stars are aligning just right for us 2 years running (Johan Santana falling into our laps last offseason).

A lot of teams are looking for closers but the receding economy, ultra-expensive closer/agents, dwindling leverage on their parts, etc. are all contributing to what could be an incredible bargain for us.

Who knows, maybe K-Rod signs for 3 years (without an option) @ $13M. You know our owners would love that…

…as for hoffman as a solution for the Mets, i have zero interest in acquiring him…he’s not the same pitcher he once was, and i want no part of a pitcher on the back-end of his career, switching cities and coasts for the first time in his legendary career, especially considering his reputation in big games over the last few seasons…

    REALLY??

Plus, knowing how omar have a knack for “old but veteran” players you can never disount the possibility of him signing him.. and if he does……..

  3. SheaVendor says:

He’s not “terrible”. Not that I would like to see him here, but c’mon..I seem to remember him making the Mets look silly a couple of times last season.

100% do no want him…he has never saved a big game in his entire carrer…..

  5. mrose says:

how is Bobby Jenks a low cost scenario? I understand in the money portion, but i’d be amazed if the Sox didn’t want a ton for him

  6. bigchart333 says:

we should trade Castillo, Heilman, Feliciano, Evans, Delgado, Carp for Jenks, Dye, Swisher, and Vazquez

    GET IT DONE OMAR!!!

–this is CLEARLY a joke people, please hold ur rage for another rant

  7. bkfitz says:

Fact: Trevor Hoffman has a better post-season ERA than Billy Wagner.

  8. tonym says:

    CLOSE THE METS PENSION FUND.

    No to Hoffman.

  9. Gina says:

I don’t think Jenks will be low-cost, if he is it’s because Chicago made a terrible trade. A cheap young closer should command a lot in the trade market.

    • fongulalou says:

Yeah, mes think if they do move him it will be part of a larger
package to include some of the guys they just want to get rid of.

    • alex.242 says:

that’s one of the reason as to why we won’t get him.. we do not have the pieces to trade 4 players or 3 for 1.. or wasn’t that what omar said about manny in midseason?

  10. bucknersankles says:

I DON’T WANT TO SEE HOFFMAN ANYWHERE NEAR CITY FIELD, HE’S 41 AT LEAST 4 -5 YRS PAST HIS PRIME IF NOT LONGER ABSOLUTELY NOT.
I’D RATHER SEE HEILMAN CLOSING ( IN JAPAN ) BEFORE TREVOR TRIES TO DON A MET UNIFORM.

Correction…”switching cities and coasts for the first time”.
I want nothing to do with him, don’t get me wrong. But no, he would not be switching coasts for the first time. He was a Marlin. As far as I know, East and West coast are different coast across the country.
