Links: Removal, Romero, Recovery, and Rogers

by Regis Courtemanche on November 12th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Anthony DeRosa of Hot Foot forwards a pic of Shea’s destruction and appropriately titles it “Dunked”.

…i wonder how much they will get for that thing since men’s room signs are selling for $250…

Phillies pitcher J.C. Romero grew up a huge Mets fan according to the Press-Register.

Bleacher Report lists their twelve steps to the Mets recovery including:

Step One: Admitting we are powerless over Mike Francesa

Step Three: Making a decision to turn our will and our lives over to Johan Santana as we understand him

Lastly, Kenny Rogers has filed for free agency according to MLB Pro Blog.

…did anyone else just shiver…

News: Manuel Sixth in Voting

by Regis Courtemanche on November 12th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Mets manager Jerry Manuel has placed sixth in NL Manager of the Year honors according to the New York Post.

Manuel led the Mets to a 55-38 record after replacing Willie Randolph as manager of the team.

…not bad for someone who was the manager for just 57% of the year…

News: Yankees Sign Marte

by Mike Nichols on November 12th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

According to a team press release, the Yankees have signed LHP Damaso Marte to three-year contract with an club option for 2012.

Multiple reports suggest the 33-year-old left-hander will earn $12 million over the next three years.

In 72 combined games last season for the Yankees and Pirates, Marte was 5-3 with a 4.02 ERA.

…i would expect marte’s deal will set the floor for the high-end middle relief market…

According to Newsday, the Mets are among several teams interested in Japanese free agent LHP Ken Takahashi.

The 39-year old Takahashi of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp went 8-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 21 games last season.

…yes, 39 years old, although this site says he is 40…i guess it doesn’t matter after a certain point…

Starting Pitcher: Reading the Starter’s Market

by Matthew Cerrone on November 12th, 2008 at 9:15 am

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have offered free-agent RHP Ryan Dempster a four-year, $50 million deal.

Dempster’s agent has told reporters there is very little chance his client will sign before Thursday, after which free agents are free to negotiate with other clubs.

…previous reports suggest the Mets would like to re-sign Oliver Perez, but only if he will accept a three-year deal or less…if dempster is being offered a four-year, $50 million deal, which he’s going to turn down, at least for now, and a guy like CC Sabathia will likely get a seven-year offer, while Derek Lowe will likely get at least a four-year offer, i see no way perez will not be offered at least a four-year deal from some one…which means, i see no way he returns to the Mets

…frankly, i have always had the sense the Mets did not want him back, but would low-ball, because, i mean, why not…but, if he leaves, nobody will lose sleep over it…

Meanwhile, speaking of the starting pitcher’s market, according to the Los Angeles Times:

“The Angels plan to make a serious run at Sabathia, who could command a deal in the six-year, $120-million range, and they could bid on right-hander A.J. Burnett, who might receive a deal in the five-year, $75-million range.”

so, if the Angels want sabathia and burnett, i.e., one or two front-line starting pitchers, just like the Yankees, it probably means the Mets will ultimately end up competing with either the Yankees or Angels for lowe…in other words, unlike the closer’s market, it’s good to be a free-agent starting pitcher today

Relief Pitcher: The Mets and the Closer’s Market

by Matthew Cerrone on November 12th, 2008 at 8:51 am

In an article for MLB.com, Marty Noble writes, “The Mets have a greater interest in the higher-profile relievers if only because they are free agents, and that trading for a closer or reliever would leave with team with another hole to fill,” according to a person familiar with the team’s thinking.

Noble lists Brian Fuentes at the top of the team’s wishlist, followed by Francisco Rodriguez and then Kerry Wood, ‘who is a distant third in the group.’

If the Mets are unable to sign a closer, they would turn to the trade market and pursue Rockies RHP Huston Street.

However, yesterday, in a report for SI.com, Jon Heyman wrote, “The Mets are trying to swing a deal for White Sox RHP Bobby Jenks before doling out free-agent riches.”

…i don’t see any way K-Rod will sign for less than a four-year deal…fuentes will likely want to sign after rodriguez, but not if prices are falling, which could put the Mets in a nice position…from a market stand point, i can see a scenario in which rodriguez has to take a four-year, $50 million deal, maybe less, instead of the five-year, $75 million contract that has been rumored about…the thing is, if rodriguez’s price drops that much, what can the Mets get fuentes to sign for, especially if it looks like they may turn to the trade market instead…

added to by Regis Courtemanche

…the team has enough money to pickup the free agents they need this winter without literally trading away the farm…

…the bullpen continues to be the priority for omar and co. so i’m interested to see how it all pans out, but i hope they’re smart and do not overpay for rodriguez who would be my top choice only at the right price…
