News: Yankees Sign Marte
By Mike Nichols - Nov 12, 2008 3:36 pm

According to a team press release, the Yankees have signed LHP Damaso Marte to three-year contract with an club option for 2012.

Multiple reports suggest the 33-year-old left-hander will earn $12 million over the next three years.

In 72 combined games last season for the Yankees and Pirates, Marte was 5-3 with a 4.02 ERA.

…i would expect marte’s deal will set the floor for the high-end middle relief market…

marte was terrible for the yanks last year. i sure he’ll be great at 36.

maddon, piniella win manager of year awards

  2. Hubie says:

That will probably establish the market for Juan Cruz. Sign Fuentes and Cruz and trade Heilman and Carp to the Rockies for Street.

  3. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Weird move, he was a type A – you’d figure the Yanks would prefer the draft picks and just sign a Joe Beimel type.

As nice as Cruz would be as a setup man, keep in mind he is a Type A player. Fuentes is 33 already, with Krod being younger, having a better track record and only slightly more expensive. It seems like such an obvious choice of who to go after.

    • iamatwork says:

only slightly more expensive? $3-4m/year and an extra year. Slightly!

      I’d rather trade for Jenks…

      • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Seems slight to me considering Fuentes has had bouts of being terrible and is old.

Jenks would be cool, be it’s costing Fernando Martinez which makes that seem like it’s going nowhere.

      • In this economy?!??! :-)

        • Hubie says:

People kid about this but the teams that manage their budgets wisely given where the economy is heading, may find themselves with a nice competitive advantage.

By the way, Red Sox just announced given the economy they are not raising their ticket prices for the first time in 14 years.

        • I certainly was kidding. Trying to draw the ridicule that you often do when talking about the economy. The writing is on the wall with it. We are about to enter a full blown recession. Teams do need to think about what they can afford for these players or else many baseball teams including ours will fall upon hard times.

        • Hubie says:

Our Mets should be in good shape for the next couple of years at least.

      • ravi3 says:

In the grandscheme of a baseball payroll, that is a slight increase…$4mill represents 3% of last years payroll.

    • Hubie says:

If you can get Fuentes at 3 yrs 30 to 35 mln, its cheaper than K-Rod at 4 and 60. Look at the 4th year returns we got from Pedro and Wags, zippo!

  4. Gina says:

Sheesh Yankees, I hope that doesn’t up the price for other, good, relievers.

    • Nate W. says:

This is only slightly more than the Mets gave Schoeneweis a couple years ago. Its not like its that extravagant of a deal for a well regarded lefty set up man.

His couple of poor months in the bronx shouldnt outweird his few good years prior.

  5. Gina says:

I don’t think it would be smart to spend two Type A’s on relievers. Unless we just can’t get any other Type A free agents.

    • Hubie says:

Good point which I tend to forget about. I think a Fuentes and Street combo would be decent in co-closer roles.

    • Nordberg says:

Considering how bad our bullpen was last year, I would definately consider signing two Type A relievers….

    • alex242 says:

i agree, just one on relievers (K-ROD) and one on a big time offensive player (TEIXEIRA) trade for bullpen help (DELGADO) get some guys from within to help the bullpen and i’ll be happy..

      • its hard to be a met fan says:

By the time Minaya starts to think about offense, Tex will be already signed…expect Ibanez to be the offensive player, if at all…the off season theme appears to be pitching, pitching and more pitching, as it should

        • Gina says:

As decent as Ibanez’s bat is I think we’d be better off saving the money/draft pick and sticking Endy in lf when you consider how terrible Ibanez’s defense is. i think people way underrated defense when it comes to putting together a team.

        • Gina says:

Or a super platoon rather than Endy.

        • alex242 says:

i think that teixeira will sign around january as the big time free agent he is.. remember scott boras is his agent, he will try to maximize what he can get for him..

        • its hard to be a met fan says:

If the season began today, LF would be split between Tatis and Murphy…Manuel made it clear that Chavez is strictly a 4th outfielder, which is correct….if Minaya lands all of the pitchers on his hit list, I doubt he will spend extra on LF, when Tatis/Murphy will be more than adequate

    • ravi3 says:

well when you factor in the picks the Mets would receive when Ollie inevitably signs elsewhere, its only as if we signed 1 type a, with regards to draft picks in ‘09.

      • Gina says:

I don’t mean because of draft picks I mean because of only being able to sign 3 total, if we let Ollie walk.

    • Nate W. says:

I disagree, they need to get back to having a closeout pen. K-Rod and Biemel is what I would be looking to do. Lowe is your third type A and you trade or stand pat with the offense/defense.

Pagan/Tatis in LF would get us by for one more year.
its the 1B/2B situation where the defense bothers me, they need to trade for someone who can play a slightly above average defense at one of those positions. And let Murphy play the other.

    YANKEES SC<K!!

  7. phukthephills says:

    sign krod
    sign biemel
    sign lowe
    trade for street
    trade for dye
    reyes
    murph
    beltran
    delgado
    wright
    church
    dye
    schnieder

    johan
    pelf
    lowe
    maine
niese/or cheap free agent/trade if niese is traded

    krod
    street
    biemel
    smith
    stokes
    parnell
    etc.

it may cost many prospects but this is a win now team and this roster would be a win now roster. Our biggest problem last year was bullpen late in games and with street in the 8th and krod in the 9th we would be set…we can prob get street for hielman, niese, and another prospect like stoner and dye for kunz, and evans…or something along those lines

    • alex242 says:

wow, i agree but from the bottom of your heart do you think omar can pull this off? honestly?

      • phukthephills says:

i duno…i think it is possible but it wont happen…i really didnt think he was gunna pull off the johan deal and he did so i really dont know… i really dont care what he does i just want to see a bullpen who can shut down the opposition in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings..

        • alex242 says:

so do i.. i keep saying that even though as a team we went through hell last year we still had enough talent to almost over come it and make the playoffs, but with that said minaya shouldn’t even address hitting and should concentrate in pitching pitching pitching… then a big hitter.. TEIXEIRA.. i don’t know how u guys feel but i want delgado gone, as much as he helped us i feel he’s not the type of veteran this team needs. let wright be the captain of a young team and move from there.

    • Gina says:

I don’t see why either team would take either of those packages. Of course I dont understand why the rockies took the A’s package for Holliday either so who knows.

      • phukthephills says:

i think hielman niese and stoner is plenty for street…the rockies have been wanting hielman for years and they also have shown alot of interest in niese…i dont even think stoner would need to be included.
kunz and evans would probably need one more decent player on top of it

    • ravi3 says:

The only thing about the roster that is win-now is Delgado.

  8. This deal doesn’t look too ridiculous to me… high quality LH relievers are valuable.

However, knowing as the Yankees that I was about to go huge into the free market, I’d prefer the type A compensation.

    • jscand says:

You know what I don’t get here. If Marte is a “Type A”, the Yanks would get two picks if they offer him arbitration. If he accepts arbitration, they still get him for one year at probably $4 million anyway, and don’t have to invest in him for 3 years at age 36 (especially since he didn’t do all that well in New York anyway). If not, they get a first round pick, a sandwich pick, and could just sign Biemel or Affeldt or Darren Oliver.

  9. CaseStreet says:

No thanks. The only reliever on the Mets that should be getting paid 7 figures is K-Rod. Everyone else needs to be cross-over pitchers. I’m thinking AAA type SP, plus Ayala to setup and Smith. That’s it. No Show, Heilman, etc.
