Buzz: Mets all in on K-Rod, like Abreu
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 13, 2008 5:02 pm

In a recent post to his blog for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark cites executives with two different teams as essentially saying, the Mets are ‘all in’ on Francisco Rodriguez, ‘regardless of what you have heard.’

In fact, the two executives predicted to Stark that Rodriguez will eventually drop his asking price to a three-year deal.

this is basically what we have all been saying could happen…i’m glad to see the industry alluding to it as well…

…the more and more i think about it, and the more and more people i talk to about the specific players, the more and more i believe K-Rod should be this team’s next closer…a) he is an immediate, perfectly-prescribed pill for the massive hang-over from the end of last season…and b) of all the potential closers, short of Bobby Jenks, who would cost talent in trade, K-Rod is electric, high-energy, he loves the big game, has pitched in a major market, and appears to be a guy who thrives on pressure…and, as you know, he will be faced with tons of pressure the first time he steps to the mound at Citi Field…there will be no time to waste

Stark also writes, “We’re also hearing talk connecting the Mets with Bobby Abreu, although Abreu’s initial asking price (three years, $45 million) isn’t close to what they had in mind.”

…please, no…as i have written before, i want nothing to do with abreu…he’s one of those players who look good on paper, but when you watch him play it is painful…i have no doubt that he would basically be a singles hitter in the NL and at Citi Field, and he often runs around the outfield like he’s lost, or being chased by a beeno thank you

Stark also takes a closer look at the market for CC Sabathia; talks between the Padres and Braves regarding Jake Peavy; and whether Manny Ramirez will be the last player to sign.

Speaking of Stark, check out this article, for ESPN.com, in which he looks at the wants and needs of every MLB team.

    3/40 done and signed

  2. oleosmirf says:

abreu will not be a met but it doesnt hurt to shop around especially when ur negotiating a trade

K-Rod will be a met and no met fan can complain about that

    • dave27 says:

I don’t know about NO met fan, but certainly not this one.

I didn’t like how he looked in the playoffs this year, but all I want at this point is to have a reason to worry about how he’d pitch in the playoffs for us.

  3. NYCESQ says:

    The Bee comment is hilarious.

I also think K-Rod is perfect for the Mets. However, I am worried that we may not be able to get Lowe. It seems like a ton of teams are going to be in on him.

    • joe the wanderer says:

the mets focused should not be on lowe to begin with. jon garland and jeff francis should be some of the players the mets should keep an eye on.

offer K rod 4 years at $48 million with option for 5th year. take it or leave it, don’t waste the mets time.

      • Sylar says:

Lowe is a very good pitcher, and Garland and Francis are both god awful.

        • NYCESQ says:

I agree. Garland and Francis? Maybe as a 5th starter, but we do still have a hole in the 2nd or 3rd spot of the rotation. You can’t possibly expect Maine to come back right away.

        • Gina says:

Garland wouldn’t be a horrible 5th starter if he can keep his ERA in the mid-low 4’s and pitch 200 innings.

        • Repeat 86 says:

i honestly dont think we have much of a chance for Lowe. I think the red sox are going to be all over him. It seems like the feelings are mutual. Garland and Vasquez.

        • metinDC23 says:

I really hope the Mets sign him as there 5th starter. No draft picks lost, 200 innings and that makes Niese the 6th starter (you know he’ll get at least 10 starts in that role).

I’ve always been envious of the teams that get to call up an actual prospect when the need an extra starter…

        • todagain says:

“runs around the outfield like he’s lost, or being chased by a bee…”

          funny line Matt ……………… I was crying……………………

  4. joe the wanderer says:

mets interest in abreu should be just a funny joke. the yankees aren’t getting the mets first round pick in 09.

  5. NYCESQ says:

Also, if we manage to get him for a three year contract, I hope Mets fans start to appreciate what Omar did in that situation.

    • metsrule09 says:

i agree, before, he was apparently only going for a 5 year deal, then he was listed as “flexible” but if we could gt him down to a 3 year deal, which is perfect, omar would deserve immense credit, plus if we can score him for 3 years, it proves that he really did want to play for the mets, and of course that always helps

  6. Sylar says:

If K-Rod will only take 3 years, then Omar has to sign him.

Abreu??? No thanks. Not enough pop, and the guy is terrified of walls.

    • HOFMets57 says:

He’s not terrified of walls as much as he’s terrified of his pretty face hitting the walls.

That’s how he plays. No grit. No thank you.

  7. CaseStreet says:

Nice to see Matt come around and admit that K-Rod is the best option for the Mets. I’m proud of you.

  8. Gina says:

If K-rod signs for three years and we’re not the team that signs him then I I will be highly offended. I might even have to write an angry letter to Omar.

    • metinDC23 says:

Yeah seriously- 3 years with an option for the 4th would be awesome.

The only downside to that is that it will probably take forever for his price to drop that low and we’ll have to deal with this closer s–t all offseason.

      • thevoyagerrocks32495@yahoo.com says:

iyts not that big of a deal waiting to sign him. we have to wait for the bigining of the season anyways

  9. thevoyagerrocks32495@yahoo.com says:

sign k rod and fuentes and use fuentes as a set up man. dump abreu

    • oleosmirf says:

and y would fuentes do that?

    • metsrule09 says:

if you think that the mets, after acquiring K-Rod will have enough money to spend on fuentes as a set up man? they would, but that would mean giving up money to be used on stating pitching, the corner outfield, second base, middle relief, etc. etc. the reasonable optoin for your suggestoin is to acquire Huston street from the rockies, who would be the perfect set up man solutin who could come at a cheap price, and at the same time preventing a 2008-like disaster once wagner got injured, as street could be considered the “backup” closer. abreu would just be another distractoin to the mets, like a jeromy burnitztype deal.. there should be no time or money wasted on him

  10. zen says:

    k-rod, ny mets

    4 years @ $56m

  11. losmets5 says:

I say we sign him to a 4/56 deal. But here is how we pay him:

    2009: $11 million
    2010: $15 million
    2011: $15 million
    2012: $15 million

That way we can keep our payroll under control until we stop paying Wags. There should be options and perks and stuff, too, but I just wanted to put the basics.

  12. gmoney says:

ESPN is listing K-Rod as not being a type A free agent. Is that possible? I don’t believe the Mets have a chance at Lowe. Why not go after Moyer? It wont cost the draft picks and he could be a strong temporary solution to fill in the back of the rotation.

    • NYCESQ says:

K-Rod is definitely a Type A FA. Also, Moyer is probably older than Selig.

      • metsrule09 says:

i would not want moyer on the mets because 1. hes about to have his 5th grandchild, and 2.the same reasons i dont want pat burell on the mets. HES A PHILLIE

    • metinDC23 says:

I’m not sure on the specifics but isn’t there a rule that you only get the draft picks if you offer the player arbitration? Did the Angels do that? I can’t imagine they wouldn’t…

      • GravediggerHebner says:

I’m not sure when the ‘arbitration offer’ period is this year, but last year it expired Dec 2.

      • PedroMANIA says:

Yes, you only get the picks if the team offers arbitration

        OR

if the player is signed before the time to offer arbitration hasn’t expired.

    • joe the wanderer says:

k rod is a type a free agent. he is the best closer on the market tomorrow.

  13. helicopter ben johnson says:

Totally agree about Abreu. If they sign him I will vomit

  14. zen says:

abreu could make some extra doing toilet paper commercials

    both soft

  15. matthew says:

If you think about, k-rod would probably make more money by accepting a 3 year deal now. He’s unlikely to decline between now and then and the market price will inevitably rise. And relief pitchers just don’t get injured as often as starters…

  16. metz1 says:

i would love to see a sort of back up reliever [maybe a lefty one to close also just in case krod gets hurt if the mets sign him.] not someone the ilk of fuentes but capable.

    • oleosmirf says:

      dennys reyes

      • metsrule09 says:

if you look at one of the other posts, it says the rockies could spin huston street, who if he was traded to the mets (along with krod), the mets would be shot right up to one of the best bulpens in baseball, with a 8-9 inning (or 7-8-9) 1-2 punch that would be by far the best in baseball

  17. metz1 says:

good call. because we all remember what happened last year.

    • metsrule09 says:

exactly. wagner. which is why they should o after krod and street, so then next year if the mets dont make the playoffs it wont be because of the bullpen, but the front ofice, who i think is to blame already. two words to describe that: LUIS CASTILLO

  18. metz1 says:

if im omar i rid the team of heilman, ayala .

  19. metz1 says:

if schowenweiss and feliciano are worth keeping.. im not sure.

  20. bucknersankles says:

    BOBBY FREAKIN ABREU ! ?

SOMEBODY GET ME GEORGE “THE STORK” THEODORE ON THE PHONE !

  21. tonyatlas44 says:

Omar MUST sign K-Rod. By the way, how about Randy Johnson as our no. 4 or 5 starter? He is now a free agent. I know he’s old, but just my 2 cents…please don’t hate.

    • therealsince86 says:

I don’t mind bringing him in to be the 5th starter.

      • therealsince86 says:

        In fact a rotation of
Johan, Pelfrey, Maine, Vasquez, Johnson is not bad at all. If any one breaks down then you have Niese to fill the spot. Also this cost us very little in terms of money and years. Johnson is said to be looking for 1-2 year deal 8 million a year. Vasquez gets 10.5. That leaves a ton of money to get relievers and even help the offense.

  22. zen says:

The Mets have sold out their 49 luxury boxes at Citi Field. Here’s the AP account:
Mets executive vice president David Howard said Thursday that the 49th suite was bought about two weeks ago. When the team announced pricing for the ballpark’s season tickets in mid-August, it said 48 suites had been committed. The Mets’ suites, which hold 16 to 22 people, sold for $250,000 to $500,000 apiece.

  23. metsfan1 says:

Yes to KROD. No to Abreu. The last thing we need is an OF that is afraid of the wall.

  24. FlightFromHouston says:

if omar signs abreu he deserves to be fi–… wait, how does he still have a job?

    • therealsince86 says:

Ummm, because unlike you he is not still stuck on the same flight and subject for months when it does not matter anymore?
