News: Kevin Gregg traded to Cubs
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 13, 2008 2:25 pm

The Marlins have traded RHP Kevin Gregg to the Cubs, according to Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

The Marlins will recieve RHP Jose Ceda from Chicago, adds Clark Spencer at his blog for the Miami Herald.

Earlier in the off-season, a scout told the Sun-Sentinel, “He’s not a closer.  Not for me.  Maybe you stick him back in the seventh inning like he used to be for the Angels, but the arbitration number ($4 million or more) is too high for that role.”

In 72 appearances for the Marlins this season, Gregg was 7–8 with 29 saves and a 3.41 ERA.

    And the fire-sale continues…

    • BBmetsfreak36 says:

lol could be. But if the cubs are planning for him to be a closer, this might help the Mets meaning they wont resign Kerry Wood. Kerry Wood might go to a team that otherwise overpay for K-rod as competition.

    • Giaco says:

      marmol to close for cubs
      gregg to setup
wood a FA not to be resigned by cubs
      =
      more closers on market
      =
      better chance to get K-Rod

      • Nate W. says:

Marmol to close while making setup money, so they can afford Gregg for a year or two. Smart move by a club with some financial flexability and sense.

        • Gina says:

Eh, this is kind of a terrible move for them. Ceda projects to be much better than Gregg and would have been under control cheaply for 5-6 years. And he could have been ready by the end of 09, possibly earlier. Baseball prospectus had Ceda ranked as their third prospect and a 4 star prospect. They thought he’d be a dominating big league closer. Baseball America had him 4th last year and he likely would have been 3rd/4th again this year

This opens up all kinds of posibilities. Wood not to be resigned and Marmol to close.
Marmol traded to the Padres in a Peavy deal to replace Hoffman…..
Maybe even Gregg or Marmol traded to a 3rd team to get Peavy?

No Big Deal here…the Marlins didn’t really seem to keen on trading in division anyway, and he was pretty over rated in my eyes

    • BBmetsfreak36 says:

He was never really “rated” that highly anyway. What was over rated was the possiblity that we would trade for him. He’s not going to be out closer, and is too expensive to be a set up guy. Not to mention the Marlins being in our division.

Every time I hear the name Kevin Gregg, I think of Carlos Beltran’s grand slam against him in Florida in the 9th this season… one of my favorite moments…

“And now here’s Beltran. Bases loaded, 2 down. Carlos has the only RBI for the Mets tonight: a sac fly back in the 1st. And he swings and drives one, deep right field! That ball is outta here! Outta here! A grand slam for Carlos Beltran, and the Mets take the lead! 5-2 New York!”

One of the few good moments of last year !

    • starz31 says:

Another great moment of 2008 that was almost ruined by our bullpen…if I remember correctly, we won 5-4 with the Marlins stranding runners on 2nd and 3rd. Even in a great clutch hit, we almost found a way to lose…soon enough though, we found those ways.

      • starz31 says:

But…besides that…that was a great top of the 9th by the offense…down to 2 outs and 2 strikes our favorite player luis castillo got it started with a single, then a Dwright single, and then Delgado hit by pitch…then yea like you said before, Beltran came to bat.

      • alex242 says:

lmao, you couldn’t have put it better, i remember cantu hitting a screaming line drive that could’ve won the game.. then he finnaly fouled out.. but a couple of days later the mets blew a 2-0 lead in the 8th inning after schoenweis came in….

        • starz31 says:

is it funny or really sad that we could use your “a couple of days later…” example for numerous games for 2008…

          …Mets have lead__insert here___Mets lose…

          ugh…

  5. Steviefan84 says:

The Marlins should just merge with the Pirates, they can only afford one player out of 25. It’s just a sad, sorry sight.

    • Nate W. says:

The Marlins can afford to keep thier players, they just dont want to.

They will be getting 40-50 million from the other teams again next year, just like last year. They can afford more than a 15 mil payroll, but they would rather stash the profits so they can build a stadium on MLB’s dollars.

  6. jaydh says:

Gregg was very good for the Marlins until his injury. I won’t be surprised if he does well for the cubs.

  7. oleosmirf says:

marmol now becomes the most dominant closer in baseball.

  8. metsfan1 says:

With Kerry Wood now being replaced by Gregg, if the Mets can settle their closer situation with either KROD, Jenks or Fuentes, I would love to see them try to get Wood as a setup man.

    • therealsince86 says:

We are not getting Wood as a Setup man. He is going to demand at least Fuentes money. 3-4 years 10-12 million. Do you honestly think the Mets will pay that for a setup man>
