Relief Pitcher: Mets in Good Spot for K-Rod
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 13, 2008 9:45 am

In the New York Post, Bart Hubbuch writes, ‘The Mets will pursue a closer right out of the gate in free agency, with starting pitching, corner outfield help, second base and possibly catcher lower on the list of priorities,’ according to a person familiar with the team’s thinking.

On Tuesday, Rodriguez’s agent, Paul Kinzer, was a guest on WFAN, and said his client likes New York, the big stage, and he is very interested in the Mets.

Hubbuch quotes Kinzer as saying essentially the same thing.

That said, according to Hubbuch, citing other sources, Brian Fuentes is higher on the team’s wish list, ‘in part because of initial reports of Rodriguez looking for a five-year deal worth as much as $15 million per season.’

well, i would like to be paid $1 million per year to write MetsBlog.com, but that’s not going to happen either…however, we can all dream, right K-Rod…

Yesterday, in an interview with a Los Angeles radio station, Angels owner Arte Moreno said he and his team are ‘probably turning the page on Rodriguez,’ and ‘moving forward.’

Similarly, in a recent radio interview, Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski also said he does not expect to bid on Rodriguez, according to a blog for the Grand Rapids Press.

And so, today, at CBS Sports, Danny Knobler concludes:

“The Mets could be well-positioned to get Rodriguez, because the other teams in need of a closer this winter are very unlikely to spend anything close to $15 million per year… The Mets could end up going that high, although not for the five years that Kinzer was originally demanding.”

Teams can start bidding on free agents starting at midnight.

In a poll of 3,300 fans on MetsBlog.com yesterday, when asked to put aside dollars, years, trades, etc., and value only talent, 59 percent of voters said they would want Rodriguez to be the team’s closer, while 19 percent said Bobby Jenks, 15 percent said Fuentes, and three percent said Huston Street.

I wonder what number K-Rod will wear since a guy named Johan Santana is wearing his #57…

  2. therealsince86 says:

I said this all along. This is a done deal. Krod will and should be a Met.

    • therealsince86 says:

4/56 with a large option for the 5th year with a 4 million dollar buy out.

      • Coolpapabell says:

The idea of him doing his little celebration on the mound of CBP after striking out Shane Victorino makes me smile. It seems like this thing will get done, so lets do it. My only concern is that the Rangers might be the crazy guy in the room.

        • METSCITI says:

ABSOLUTELY. I’ve been saying for a month or so now that every time he goes wild on the mound we are going to love it.
I want this team to be the most hated gritty and gutty team in baseball, and Krod will help get us there

        • Moises says:

That is the best thing I’ve imagined in a while. The longer we go without a closer, the more I want k-rod on this team.

      • mark4212 says:

        sign me up.

in other news related to the mets:

According to the Chicago Tribune, the White Sox are “scrutinizing prospects for” a potential Jermaine Dye trade.
The 35-year-old Dye has limited no-trade rights, but the newspaper notes that general manager Ken Williams “has a short list of teams for his right fielder” that may include the Mets.

        • Coolpapabell says:

Hmmm……….well if we are to cut a deal with the ChiSox, I would rather it be for Javier Vazquez. Because we don’t have enough minor leaguers to get both Dye and Vazquez and Vazquez is a bigger need, though Dye is the better player.

        • therealsince86 says:

How about Bowman and Kunz? Seems fair for a 1 year salary dump.

        • Coolpapabell says:

I think Mlbtraderumors linked that article.

        • therealsince86 says:

I too am MUCH more intersted in Vasquez. I would only be interested in Dye IF Murphy was going to be the 2B next season. Vasquez allows us much more flexiblity in the market.

        • METSCITI says:

This might be the same article but I also read that:

“Tuesday night, several Sox officials watched Mets pitching prospects Bobby Parnell and Eddie Kunz pitch for the Peoria Saguaros in the AFL. Two scouts believed Parnell, 24, was too valuable for the Mets to deal and believed Kunz, a projected closer, needed more seasoning in the minors.”

        • therealsince86 says:

Ok, Bowman and Parnell for Vasquez?

        • Coolpapabell says:

I’ll be fine with that. Can we throw in a stick of gum (Luis Castillo)with that deal too.

Vazquez is perfect because the small market teams don’t want that contract for a back end of the rotation guy, and the big market teams who want pitching have already been burned by him already. All right just one big market team…….the Yanks want no part of Javier.

Now I think his ERA drops a bit sans having to face the DH and his HR rate drops due to pitching at Citi (supposed to be a pitcher’s park). I think he will get lit up at CBP.

        • alex242 says:

“I’ll be fine with that. Can we throw in a stick of gum (Luis Castillo)with that deal too”

make that a: CHEW AND DRY OUT PIECE OF GUM!!

    • kingman 26 says:

I agree…just like Santana….Omar will let KRod and his agent sweat it out a bit more and let the price drop a bit, and Omar will give us another fine offseason gift.

Next, on to lesser bullpen parts….

      • Coolpapabell says:

Omar is great at approaching and bagging big talent, but it seems like his concentration lags when dealing with the Luis Castillo’s and Scott Schoenwiess’ of the world.

        • therealsince86 says:

Actually he just gets in too much of a rush sometimes and misjudges the market. Castillo or Eckenstien were going to get a big contract, which ever one signed first. The other left out in the cold.

        • kingman 26 says:

Yeah, that is an outstanding point….and to me, the Schoeneweis contract was even worse than Slappy’s!

        • therealsince86 says:

Could be, I think Omar thought that 3 years was too much for a reliever and then Bradford got it. Thus unless he brought in no one, he would have to go 3 years. Neither of those contracts will hurt us in the long run. Their season salaries do not even make up what Alou was paid for 1 year.

        • kingman 26 says:

Was responding to CoolPapa, but TRS is right too….

        • kingman 26 says:

Yeah, TRS, you are right; the money is small for the Mets in the long run….but Bradford is just so much better than Schoeneweis….I know many people cringe at the sight of Slappy on the field, but Schoeneweis is my Slappy…when he starts to warm up, it is time to start counting the men on base as runs….his stats, while mediocre in themselves, are misleading as he probably let more inherited runners score than anyone since Rudy Stein of the Bad News Bears.

And Slappy’s pre-Met career is Hall of Fame level compared to Schoeneweis’.

        • Coolpapabell says:

I think he was focused in on the short term, and ignored the long term effects of that deal. He wanted stability for 2008 and the rest be damned. Castillo’s knees were shot in 2007, we all saw it. He could have feigned an internal option and waited them out.

        • Coolpapabell says:

But hind sight is ……….well you know. The funnt thing is thing is taht we all knew the Castillo contract was bad right after it was announced, and sadly, we were right.

        • therealsince86 says:

It was as sumed he would recover from a normal surgery and for some reason he did not. I don’t know if he rushed it or what.

Kingman, as for Show, as long as he just faces LH’s in the 6th inning I have no problem with him. I actually have more confidence in him right now than Feliciano or Heilman.

I would expect that Omar felt that Bradford was better than Show but he did not think that 3 years was a good idea. Then the market forced his hand. Besides, it was a good sign that he valued Smith as a replacement for Bradford.

        • NYMETSFAN718 says:

If i may ask? Who is slappy?

        • kingman 26 says:

Castillo….I think it maybe was Cerrone who started calling him Slappy McSingleton.

          I like Slappy McMediocre too…..

        • NYMETSFAN718 says:

Ahhhh yesss, Should have known the obvious!!!!!

  3. BiggieSmalls says:

this agent is practically camped out at CitiField waiting for Friday to come.

Has he bought a billboard yet on the Whitestone??

  4. METSCITI says:

I still think theres a good chance Omar will sign one of Fuentes or Krod, then trade for someone like Putz, Jenks, or Street to be the setup man; and then after all that is done he’ll sign Chad Cordero to a value contract

That certainly would quiet everyone about the pen and would make the starters much much stronger

Do you think a package of Heilman, Evans, Kunz, and another low level prospect would be enough for Street?

    • therealsince86 says:

Enough? Way too much. If they would include a LF or something maybe.

      • METSCITI says:

I like Atkins too, but trying to think about expanded deals like that is just crazy. I would love to see them have a Cordero, Street, Krod 7th, 8th, 9th…
But I also agree that you cannot shoot yourself in the foot for other deals down the road

        • MetLifer says:

No.. How about Lidge, Palp, and Mariano for the 7th, 8th and 9th.. I’m sure every closer wants to be a setup man for our team.

        • therealsince86 says:

LOL, It does not look like Cordero or Street will be closer’s this season anyway. But point taken. More likely that Omar is not going to trade for Street and sign Krod because a Street trade is trading for a guy with closer value.

        • METSCITI says:

I’m not saying a trade for someone’s closer to be our setup man is likely or not… But it would have nothing to do with if that played wanted to close or not and everything to do with how badly Omar wanted to put an end to the nonsense of the past 2 years

Cordero seems like a good fit here as Omar knows him very well and he would be a very cheap setup man with huge upside

        • MetLifer says:

Along those lines.. A trade for Street would almost definately have to include one of FM, Niese or Murphy. A headcase and a couple of B – C level prospects is not going to cut it.

        • therealsince86 says:

I would not focus on Street at all. Sign Krod, Eddie Guardado and trade for Betancourt.

        • stickguy says:

as-suming his knee issue is resolved (and healthy) I actualy think Heilmann wold have a btter year than Atreet. Or at least just as good of one.

I still think he should be traded if there is a good return, and if not, let him compete for a starts slot. And have him prepare over the winter for it.

        • alex242 says:

:I would not focus on Street at all. Sign Krod, Eddie Guardado and trade for Betancourt.”

THE REAL, i totally like that bullpen set up..

“as-suming his knee issue is resolved (and healthy) I actualy think Heilmann would have a better year than street.”

agrre too, that’s why if anything i’d put him in the starting rotation..
          #5 starting pitcher..

        • Dirtysanchez says:

or use him as trade bait….

        • therealsince86 says:

Agreed on Heilman. I would 100% let teams know he is on the block as a starter. Let him audition with Niese for the #5 spot this spring. If you get a good offer then great, if not then I am willing to bet he would have better numbers at #5 this season than Niese.

  5. SPINK3 says:

White Sox scouts were watching parnell and kunz pitch yesterday. Hopefully they like what they see and send Dye over here because he would be perfect for the next 2 yrs before Fmart is ready. Contract is good too.

    • therealsince86 says:

I still think I would rather have Vasquez and Murphy in LF IF Murphy is not going to be at 2B.

      • gowrightgo says:

I think Murphy is either the starting LF or starting 2b next year.

Would you consider a trade for a big part (either 8th inning set up man like Street or possibly Vasquez to be the 4th starter) with Church as the main piece? I’d guess that Tatis would be the RF until we had another option down the line.

        • therealsince86 says:

I have no desire to trade a cheap Church to create a big hole in RF. Church as a #6 or 7 hitter next season is a risk worth taking.

        • gowrightgo says:

It would definitely be a trade that has big risk and creates a new hole. Where does FMart play when he is ready? Is it definitely LF or does he have the tools to be RF’er in late 2009 or 2010 when ready?

        • wrightstuff08 says:

Keep Street away from this team, his numbers arent impressive at all.

        • therealsince86 says:

Why not play him in LF and Church in RF? Church is a nice gritty cheap player that does all kinds of little things. We really undervalue his defense here. When Delgado is gone in a perfect world you have Murphy at 1B and Fmart in LF. That free’s up a ton of cash for pitching and 2B.

    • I like Dye but what do you do with Murphy, Tatis, and Chavez? And Evans blocked in the minors? That’s a lot of potential offense remaining without a spot in the minors.

      • gowrightgo says:

How about Dye in LF, Murphy at 2b, Trade Church and one of the lower level pitching prospects for Vasquez (Tobi Stoner type) and have Chavez and Tatis platoon in RF?

        • therealsince86 says:

Why? For 1 year of an old Dye? Church is an as set not a crutch.
Again, if Murphy is playing 2nd and Dye is in LF then why trade Church?

        • gowrightgo says:

The thought was to trade church to get another ML arm to start in Vasquez, while solving the RH LF need and committing to Murphy as the 2b of the future. IT does open a new hole though in RF that is true.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

i was about to write the same thing real(as usual you beat me too it) but i began thinking if maybe he mentioned church in a proposed deal to aquire dye and vazquez.

        • therealsince86 says:

I thought the same too. But he approached it as saying we could get Dye without Church.
I would let Murphy play LF this season and trade for Vasquez. If you can include Castillo then fine and sign Grudzy for short term. If you can not then let him start for now with a Grudzy platoon.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

agreed. It was an odd proposal and i was stretching to fill in the blanks lol but i totally agree. If they are able to aquire vazquez and dump castillo in the process i believe we should move murph to that position with a good backup(you mentioned grudzy…anybody but awful reyes). LF would still be barren but thats something we can address with another trade.

        • gowrightgo says:

Sorry. work got in the way. I was unclear above. Originally the thought was getting Dye without committing Church to get Vasquez while putting Murphy at 2b. But now as I add it all up…it would be a broader deal with the blanco sox. Something like Church and Castillo plus a guy like Bowman and Heilman for Vazquez and Dye. We solidify the need for a RH LF and get a 4th starter while committing to Murphy at 2b.

This a fair deal for both sides but it does open a major hole in RF. If we could get Vasquez and Dye in a deal that does not require sending Church or Murphy or Fmart to the sox, I’d do it. But I’d consider it with Church in the deal. I guess my point is that I value what Niese and Parnell can potentially give us and what Murphy and Fmart can potentially give us more than what Church is giving us. Church is a nice gritty complimentary player piece to a good team but he is not a star

      • stickguy says:

Tatis and Chavez are bench players then. Where they probably belong (although Tatis can be useful as part of a platoon). And endy can be moved if he gets caught in a numbers crunch.

      • oleosmirf says:

so we should turn down a 30+ HR hitter or trade Church b/c Tatis and Chavez would be on the bench?????

  6. iamatwork says:

When asked to ignore reality, baseball fans stated that they wanted the best player.”

    Thanks for the update folks!

  7. gowrightgo says:

So many good signs already coming out of this offseason. The rumors on Krod’s desire for NY and his willingness to negotiate. The interest in improving the whole pen not just the closer spot. The desire to add depth to the outfield and of course the rumored interest in guys for 2b and catcher.

There is too much to do in one offseason to accomplish all of it but really there are what I would term desperate needs in 5 spots.

In no particular order I see the critical “must have” needs as the following….

    1) Closer
    2) Setup man (getting out both lefties and righties obviously
    3) LF – RH hitting LF’er
    4) Starting Pitcher (one good one should suffice)
    5) Decision on 2b

If the Mets are sold on Murphy as a competent 2b defensively, I’d go with him and acquire a new LF on a short deal (Dye is intriguing to me)

Then for closer – take your pick of Krod or Fuentes and spend what is needed

Setup man should come through a trade but I can not identify the guy. I’d like Street but not love him. Other pseudo GMS probably have the right guy but I can not decide on one

Finally for the other starter……I’d replace Ollie with Derek Lowe on a 4 yr deal (historically a true workhorse) or more of an injury risk in Sheets or Burnett if the price reflected their history of injury. I’d test the waters on Freddy Garcia as well but not instead of Lowe…only in addition to.

Niese, Vargas and Parnell are the guys closest to being ready to help and should all be in AAA getting seasoning until injury hits.

We could live with a front 4 to the rotation of just Santana, Pelfrey, Maine and Lowe (Burnett or Sheets also to be considered) Having another lefty would help immensely obviously

    • therealsince86 says:

I like Lowe but I would not go more than 3 and an option year. A 40 year old under contract scares me.

    • METSCITI says:

We already know the answer to Muprhy as a 2nd baseman this year – No – He’s playing the OF in winter ball and has played a subpar 2nd base in fall ball

I’d be fine with Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Lowe, and Garcia (I really like taking a shot with him)

Setup man no one really knows at this point, but my gut tells me that all of Omar’s groundwork for a trade for Jenks, Street, or whoever is for a setup guy – while still signing Krod or Fuentes

      • gowrightgo says:

I could live with all of that. Not sure that Murphy is solely slated in LF as a result of the teams commitment to consider him in LF while at Winter ball. At the moment he is the 2b in the AFL. Maybe they are working hard to create a market for Castillo and do not want to minimize it by saying out loud Murphy is the 2b next year. Not sure.

        • MudvilleNine says:

I see it as the Mets actually have a say as to where a player plays in the major league owned Arizona Fall League. Where as with an unaffiliated winter league, its the winter league team itself that recruits the player and tells him where he’s going to play. So saying the Mets have given up on Murphy being the secondbaseman because Murph will be playing winter ball in the outfield just isn’t true. I’m sure if the Mets had any say as to where they’d like him to play, they’d ask that he play second. But the winter teams are out to win, not develop players for the majors, so though they may listen, they’ll do whats best for themselves. I’d also like to wonder how people think he cant learn the footwork at second yet will be able to learn the footwork at first. Its not easier.

  9. HitTheSinkerBall says:

LA’s Joe Beimel should be high on the Mets radar

  10. MetLifer says:

Why is everyone so against giving KRod 5 years? He’s 26 and not 33… If you’re worried about him being injury prone, you should shouldn’t be signing him in the first place!

    • metman04 says:

True, however, it seems at the moment that the only people we are bidding against are ourselves so Omar has to set the bar low at least to start with

    • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

The reason is we don’t HAVE to give him 5 years. Krod wants 5 years, Omar wants 3 years so they meet in the middle at 4.

      Everyone is happy.

    • therealsince86 says:

      I would welcome 5/63 or 4/56.

    • HitTheSinkerBall says:

Yea I don’t get it … Fuentes wants a 4 year deal and that’s ok same with Lowe? But given K-Rod a 5 year deal when he is 26 years old and one of the best closers in the game is a bad idea? I would rather give him a 4 year deal but I mean if it takes a 5 year deal to get him what is the big deal?

      • HOFMets57 says:

True. K-Rod, more than Lowe and Fuentes deserves a 5-yr. contract but it doesn’t hurt to sign him for 4 now does it? The market has really been in our favor the last couple offseasons (Santana last year)…

  11. iamatwork says:

    We need starting pitching more!

  12. dave27 says:

Why is no one mentioning Jon Garland as a potential target for the 4-5 spot in the rotation? I’d rather him to Lowe personally.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

your still a spot short. You need to get a lowe type person to fill in a 2-4 spot in the rotation. Im sure people wont mind garland if we get lowe or vazquez.

      • dave27 says:

I’m figuing Santana, Maine, Pelfrey 1-3.

I think Garland is being underrated a bit, even if he does suffer from Saberhagen Syndrome (great one year, lousy the next). Lowe might have an edge over him, but no way does Vasquez.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

garland is mentioned all the time around here tho dave. I wouldnt mind giving him the 5th spot or if niese is still here id give it to him but we must either sign lowe or aquire vazquez imo. With either of those guys we have a strong 4 man rotation

        • therealsince86 says:

Seriously? Vasquez has an edge on both of them. He is a consistant SO pitcher that goes 200 innings plus. He is cheap, on a shorter contract, younger than Lowe and better than Garland.

        • Gina says:

How does Vazquez not have an edge over Garland? He’s older but he’s a far better pitcher and pitches just as many innings?

      • wrightstuff08 says:

Get Lowe/Garland and Vazquez and then i would feel much better about the rotation. I’m happy with this rotation as follows:

        Santana
        Lowe/Vazquez
        Pelfrey
        Maine
        Garland

      • dave27 says:

I’d add Garland is a Type B free agent while Lowe is a type A…so there is less compensation involved.

Of course if you can get the ChiSox to take Castillo for Vasquez that trumps all.

        • therealsince86 says:

Actually that is a nice rotation. Johan, Vasquez, Pelfrey, Maine and Garland. Nice and young rotation with a lot of innings.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

yep. Garland is a type b i think he should be signed if at the very least to compete with niese. Lowe or vazquez is a must though.

    • therealsince86 says:

I like Garland but signing him and sloting in Niese is too dangerous. If you go with Lowe, a better pitcher, then Niese is more of an option.
I would be happy with Garland and a reclamation project while Niese is in AAA.

      • alex242 says:

if we sign garland, get vasquez we’d have a very solid rotation!!

        • Dirtysanchez says:

agreed. We can all agree that the mets need to either get lowe or trade for vazquez. After that either garland or niese become good canidates for #5

        • alex242 says:

i’d rather trade for vasquez and sign garland, if anybody go down due to an injury niese will fill their spot.. that’ll give us depth where we haven’t had in the past year. then we wouldn’t have to rely on the likes of jose lima, lawrence, etc..

      • Gina says:

We could sign both considerin Garland’s a Type B and have Garland as a 5th starter.

  13. Gina says:

I feel like we’ve had this same post about K-rod like 3 days in a row.

  14. Gina says:

Also for what it’s worth I would love to get Vazquez but it doesn’t seem like we have a chance in hell.

    • Gina says:

Well wait we do have a chance, but not for the package that Omar reportedly was interested in offering. From what I read he wants the Whitesox to take back Castillo and they, like the rest of the baseball world, want nothing to do with him.

      • therealsince86 says:

I think he knows he has time. Put pressure to take Castillo right now. If the Sox get a better offer but like the Mets prospects they will come back. I see no reason that Bowman, Kunz and a low level prospect can’t get it done.

      • alex242 says:

jajajaja, i wonder what the wilpons told omar??

I think given that Kenny Williams is a bold, action oriented GM and given that Omar loves former Expos, it’s a reasonable possibility that they make something happen with Vazquez.

  15. lil pelf says:

can we get k rod and fuentes? we can afford both of them, clearly relief pitching is more important right now than everything else combined and we desperately need a shut down 8th inning guy in addition to a closer.

    • therealsince86 says:

      1) Fuentes would not sign to be a setup man
      2) No team will spend 11 million on a setup man.

It’s not happening. Baseball just does not work this way.

      • dave27 says:

Especially not a team paying $13MM on a second closer’s rehab.

      • lil pelf says:

we can spend 11 million on a terrible second baseman, yet the set up position, the position that has done us in over and over and over in the past three seasons is not worth 11 million dollars? heck give fuentes the 20 million we get from the naming rights of our new corporate building/ballpark and offer it to fuentes, he won’t turn that down.

        • metman04 says:

Last i checked castillo wasnt makin 11 mil a year…i would give fuentes castillo money to be a setup man…4 years around 24 mil? He would laugh at that

        • therealsince86 says:

Exactly, the guy is wanting 3/33 at least. That’s just silly.

  16. oleosmirf says:

Why is everyone so high on Vasquez. The guy was terrible for the Yankees so NY might not be a good place for him.

You’re not gonna get him for Luis Castillo and/or Schoeneweis so stop dreaming.

Jermaine Dye is perfect for LF. He’s a RH power hitter with no injry problems and will stay for 1-2 years until F-Mart is ready and move Murphy to 2nd. That one trade sets the entire lineup and Omar can focus his entire attention on pitching.

A package of Heilman, Evans and Kunz should be enough to get Dye.

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Delgado
    Dye
    Church
    Murphy
    Schneider/Fatso

We can now sign K-Rod (A), Lowe (A) and D. Reyes (B) and makes some lesser signings and trades to fill other needs and to dump Castillo.

    • therealsince86 says:

Um because Dye is Old and bandaides a position for 1 year. People are underrating Vasquez not overrating him. Actually look at his stats beyone Wins and ERA and you would see he would EASILY be our #3 starter.

      • dave27 says:

Old does not always equal bad. Dye is a stud, always has been.

        • alex242 says:

did you say he is a stud? he’s had good home runs year, hit over 300 twice, only 3 years over 100 rbi’s how is that a stud???

      • alex242 says:

i agreed.. maybe even become our #2.. as long as we don’t let him know we counting on him (see how he tends to tighten up in big games) like the sox did..

        • NYMETSFAN718 says:

I dont think you have to tell a pitcher when you are counting on them. A pitcher knows when its a big game or not, you do not need to tell him. Ypu think Omar told SUPERMAN on saturday, “look, we are counting on you today, we need a win”? I dont think so

      • oleosmirf says:

Dye was .292 34 96 last season. How much of a drop off can you expect? Even if he gets us .270 25 80 thats still great for what we gave up.

Vasquez has a career 4.32 ERA and you want him to come back to NY where he was awful and be our #3 starter.

He’s nothing more than a 5th starter on this team.

        • alex242 says:

good.. i rather have him as a #5 starter than niese who’s unproven!!

        • NYMETSFAN718 says:

You can not put Vazques ahead of Pelfrey or Maine. NO WAY he is a #2 or #3. Like Smirf said, if anything he is #5. He already proved he cant pitch in big games and he folds down the stretch. He also can not pitch in NY as he already showed us. Why does every1 want him on the Mets?? I would trade for Dye alone.

        • therealsince86 says:

LOL, he’s not better than Maine? Maine right now is a 5 inning pitcher. Vasquez averages well over 200 innings a year.
Let me ask you, do you consider Perez to have been our #3 last season? If so his ERA is right in line, he just pitches more innings.

  17. stickguy says:

garland is iffy number wise. Not sure what to expect from him. But if he isn’t a type A, and the contract is reasonable, he could be OK for a back of the rotation spot.

Vazquez, if the prospect cost isn’t too high, would certainly plug a major hole.

If Vazquez joins the rotation as #4, I’m cool with either a garland, or let Neise/Vargas/Etc. fight it out for the 5th spot, with the others in AAA wiating in the wings.

I like Parnell for the pen, but he could also shoot for the 5 hole. Possibly Heilmann too for that spot. At least they would have a lot of seemingly viable options, and they will need to break in young arms something.

Murhpy at 2B is still the key to the position players. Dye on his 1 year deal would be a perfect placeholder in LF.

    Reyes
    Murphy
    Wright
    Delgado (if not moved)
    Beltran
    Dye
    Church
    Catcher (TBD hopefully!)

Not too shabby looking, with Tatis, evans, etc. on the bench (and giving Church some rest)

Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Garland/Vazquez, Neise/Vargas? works for me. Or they could always just resign Ollie.

Krod, Cordero, Sanchez, Parnell, a lefty or 2, smith, etc. can form a workable pen.

K Rod is a no brainer (only money). Key I guess is what you have to give up for Dye and/or Vazquez (making Garland more attractive).

Lowe for 3/4 years scares me (age and all).

    • oleosmirf says:

first off Murphy is not a 2 hitter (yet), He’s only had a limited number of AB, let’s start him batting 7th and by June if he’s tearing the ball then move him number 2.

Thats not a great rotation. I’d replace Garland with Lowe

remeber Lowe might be older but he wasn’t a starter until he was 29 so he’s pitched alot fewer innings than your typical 35 year old.

I like the bullpen though, I would personally replace Cordero with D.Reyes, just look at his stats era under 3 this year and in 06 had an era under 1.

      • metman04 says:

I agree Rich…I am 100% for them getting Lowe instead of Garland, and in the limited time Cordero pitched last year he did not look himself

  18. CaseStreet says:

K-Rod just bought a house next to Santana. JK. But, this is so done it’s old news. Let’s sign CC/Burnett/Sheets and Dunn. Then trade for Vazquez. It’s over baby.
