Relief Pitcher: Mets in Good Spot for K-Rod
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 13, 2008 9:45 am

In the New York Post, Bart Hubbuch writes, ‘The Mets will pursue a closer right out of the gate in free agency, with starting pitching, corner outfield help, second base and possibly catcher lower on the list of priorities,’ according to a person familiar with the team’s thinking.

On Tuesday, Rodriguez’s agent, Paul Kinzer, was a guest on WFAN, and said his client likes New York, the big stage, and he is very interested in the Mets.

Hubbuch quotes Kinzer as saying essentially the same thing.

That said, according to Hubbuch, citing other sources, Brian Fuentes is higher on the team’s wish list, ‘in part because of initial reports of Rodriguez looking for a five-year deal worth as much as $15 million per season.’

well, i would like to be paid $1 million per year to write MetsBlog.com, but that’s not going to happen either…however, we can all dream, right K-Rod…

Yesterday, in an interview with a Los Angeles radio station, Angels owner Arte Moreno said he and his team are ‘probably turning the page on Rodriguez,’ and ‘moving forward.’

Similarly, in a recent radio interview, Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski also said he does not expect to bid on Rodriguez, according to a blog for the Grand Rapids Press.

And so, today, at CBS Sports, Danny Knobler concludes:

“The Mets could be well-positioned to get Rodriguez, because the other teams in need of a closer this winter are very unlikely to spend anything close to $15 million per year… The Mets could end up going that high, although not for the five years that Kinzer was originally demanding.”

Teams can start bidding on free agents starting at midnight.

In a poll of 3,300 fans on MetsBlog.com yesterday, when asked to put aside dollars, years, trades, etc., and value only talent, 59 percent of voters said they would want Rodriguez to be the team’s closer, while 19 percent said Bobby Jenks, 15 percent said Fuentes, and three percent said Huston Street.

I wonder what number K-Rod will wear since a guy named Johan Santana is wearing his #57…

  2. therealsince86 says:

I said this all along. This is a done deal. Krod will and should be a Met.

    • therealsince86 says:

4/56 with a large option for the 5th year with a 4 million dollar buy out.

      • Coolpapabell says:

The idea of him doing his little celebration on the mound of CBP after striking out Shane Victorino makes me smile. It seems like this thing will get done, so lets do it. My only concern is that the Rangers might be the crazy guy in the room.

        • METSCITI says:

ABSOLUTELY. I’ve been saying for a month or so now that every time he goes wild on the mound we are going to love it.
I want this team to be the most hated gritty and gutty team in baseball, and Krod will help get us there

        • Moises says:

That is the best thing I’ve imagined in a while. The longer we go without a closer, the more I want k-rod on this team.

      • mark4212 says:

        sign me up.

in other news related to the mets:

According to the Chicago Tribune, the White Sox are “scrutinizing prospects for” a potential Jermaine Dye trade.
The 35-year-old Dye has limited no-trade rights, but the newspaper notes that general manager Ken Williams “has a short list of teams for his right fielder” that may include the Mets.

        • Coolpapabell says:

Hmmm……….well if we are to cut a deal with the ChiSox, I would rather it be for Javier Vazquez. Because we don’t have enough minor leaguers to get both Dye and Vazquez and Vazquez is a bigger need, though Dye is the better player.

        • therealsince86 says:

How about Bowman and Kunz? Seems fair for a 1 year salary dump.

        • Coolpapabell says:

I think Mlbtraderumors linked that article.

        • therealsince86 says:

I too am MUCH more intersted in Vasquez. I would only be interested in Dye IF Murphy was going to be the 2B next season. Vasquez allows us much more flexiblity in the market.

        • METSCITI says:

This might be the same article but I also read that:

“Tuesday night, several Sox officials watched Mets pitching prospects Bobby Parnell and Eddie Kunz pitch for the Peoria Saguaros in the AFL. Two scouts believed Parnell, 24, was too valuable for the Mets to deal and believed Kunz, a projected closer, needed more seasoning in the minors.”

        • therealsince86 says:

Ok, Bowman and Parnell for Vasquez?

        • Coolpapabell says:

I’ll be fine with that. Can we throw in a stick of gum (Luis Castillo)with that deal too.

Vazquez is perfect because the small market teams don’t want that contract for a back end of the rotation guy, and the big market teams who want pitching have already been burned by him already. All right just one big market team…….the Yanks want no part of Javier.

Now I think his ERA drops a bit sans having to face the DH and his HR rate drops due to pitching at Citi (supposed to be a pitcher’s park). I think he will get lit up at CBP.

        • alex242 says:

“I’ll be fine with that. Can we throw in a stick of gum (Luis Castillo)with that deal too”

make that a: CHEW AND DRY OUT PIECE OF GUM!!

    • kingman 26 says:

I agree…just like Santana….Omar will let KRod and his agent sweat it out a bit more and let the price drop a bit, and Omar will give us another fine offseason gift.

Next, on to lesser bullpen parts….

      • Coolpapabell says:

Omar is great at approaching and bagging big talent, but it seems like his concentration lags when dealing with the Luis Castillo’s and Scott Schoenwiess’ of the world.

        • therealsince86 says:

Actually he just gets in too much of a rush sometimes and misjudges the market. Castillo or Eckenstien were going to get a big contract, which ever one signed first. The other left out in the cold.

        • kingman 26 says:

Yeah, that is an outstanding point….and to me, the Schoeneweis contract was even worse than Slappy’s!

        • therealsince86 says:

Could be, I think Omar thought that 3 years was too much for a reliever and then Bradford got it. Thus unless he brought in no one, he would have to go 3 years. Neither of those contracts will hurt us in the long run. Their season salaries do not even make up what Alou was paid for 1 year.

        • kingman 26 says:

Was responding to CoolPapa, but TRS is right too….

        • kingman 26 says:

Yeah, TRS, you are right; the money is small for the Mets in the long run….but Bradford is just so much better than Schoeneweis….I know many people cringe at the sight of Slappy on the field, but Schoeneweis is my Slappy…when he starts to warm up, it is time to start counting the men on base as runs….his stats, while mediocre in themselves, are misleading as he probably let more inherited runners score than anyone since Rudy Stein of the Bad News Bears.

And Slappy’s pre-Met career is Hall of Fame level compared to Schoeneweis’.

        • Coolpapabell says:

I think he was focused in on the short term, and ignored the long term effects of that deal. He wanted stability for 2008 and the rest be damned. Castillo’s knees were shot in 2007, we all saw it. He could have feigned an internal option and waited them out.

        • Coolpapabell says:

But hind sight is ……….well you know. The funnt thing is thing is taht we all knew the Castillo contract was bad right after it was announced, and sadly, we were right.

        • therealsince86 says:

It was as sumed he would recover from a normal surgery and for some reason he did not. I don’t know if he rushed it or what.

Kingman, as for Show, as long as he just faces LH’s in the 6th inning I have no problem with him. I actually have more confidence in him right now than Feliciano or Heilman.

I would expect that Omar felt that Bradford was better than Show but he did not think that 3 years was a good idea. Then the market forced his hand. Besides, it was a good sign that he valued Smith as a replacement for Bradford.

        • NYMETSFAN718 says:

If i may ask? Who is slappy?

        • kingman 26 says:

Castillo….I think it maybe was Cerrone who started calling him Slappy McSingleton.

          I like Slappy McMediocre too…..

        • NYMETSFAN718 says:

Ahhhh yesss, Should have known the obvious!!!!!

  3. BiggieSmalls says:

this agent is practically camped out at CitiField waiting for Friday to come.

Has he bought a billboard yet on the Whitestone??

  4. METSCITI says:

I still think theres a good chance Omar will sign one of Fuentes or Krod, then trade for someone like Putz, Jenks, or Street to be the setup man; and then after all that is done he’ll sign Chad Cordero to a value contract

That certainly would quiet everyone about the pen and would make the starters much much stronger

Do you think a package of Heilman, Evans, Kunz, and another low level prospect would be enough for Street?

    • therealsince86 says:

Enough? Way too much. If they would include a LF or something maybe.

      • METSCITI says:

I like Atkins too, but trying to think about expanded deals like that is just crazy. I would love to see them have a Cordero, Street, Krod 7th, 8th, 9th…
But I also agree that you cannot shoot yourself in the foot for other deals down the road

        • MetLifer says:

No.. How about Lidge, Palp, and Mariano for the 7th, 8th and 9th.. I’m sure every closer wants to be a setup man for our team.

        • therealsince86 says:

LOL, It does not look like Cordero or Street will be closer’s this season anyway. But point taken. More likely that Omar is not going to trade for Street and sign Krod because a Street trade is trading for a guy with closer value.

        • METSCITI says:

I’m not saying a trade for someone’s closer to be our setup man is likely or not… But it would have nothing to do with if that played wanted to close or not and everything to do with how badly Omar wanted to put an end to the nonsense of the past 2 years

Cordero seems like a good fit here as Omar knows him very well and he would be a very cheap setup man with huge upside

        • MetLifer says:

Along those lines.. A trade for Street would almost definately have to include one of FM, Niese or Murphy. A headcase and a couple of B - C level prospects is not going to cut it.

        • therealsince86 says:

I would not focus on Street at all. Sign Krod, Eddie Guardado and trade for Betancourt.

        • stickguy says:

as-suming his knee issue is resolved (and healthy) I actualy think Heilmann wold have a btter year than Atreet. Or at least just as good of one.

I still think he should be traded if there is a good return, and if not, let him compete for a starts slot. And have him prepare over the winter for it.

        • alex242 says:

:I would not focus on Street at all. Sign Krod, Eddie Guardado and trade for Betancourt.”

THE REAL, i totally like that bullpen set up..

“as-suming his knee issue is resolved (and healthy) I actualy think Heilmann would have a better year than street.”

agrre too, that’s why if anything i’d put him in the starting rotation..
          #5 starting pitcher..

        • Dirtysanchez says:

or use him as trade bait….

        • therealsince86 says:

Agreed on Heilman. I would 100% let teams know he is on the block as a starter. Let him audition with Niese for the #5 spot this spring. If you get a good offer then great, if not then I am willing to bet he would have better numbers at #5 this season than Niese.

  5. SPINK3 says:

White Sox scouts were watching parnell and kunz pitch yesterday. Hopefully they like what they see and send Dye over here because he would be perfect for the next 2 yrs before Fmart is ready. Contract is good too.

    • therealsince86 says:

I still think I would rather have Vasquez and Murphy in LF IF Murphy is not going to be at 2B.

      • gowrightgo says:

I think Murphy is either the starting LF or starting 2b next year.

Would you consider a trade for a big part (either 8th inning set up man like Street or possibly Vasquez to be the 4th starter) with Church as the main piece? I’d guess that Tatis would be the RF until we had another option down the line.

        • therealsince86 says:

I have no desire to trade a cheap Church to create a big hole in RF. Church as a #6 or 7 hitter next season is a risk worth taking.

        • gowrightgo says:

It would definitely be a trade that has big risk and creates a new hole. Where does FMart play when he is ready? Is it definitely LF or does he have the tools to be RF’er in late 2009 or 2010 when ready?
