News: Mazzilli Out at SNY

According to Neil Best at Newsday, citing ‘an industry source,’ Lee Mazzilli will not be back with SNY for 2009.

The network may turn to Bob Ojeda as a replacement, according to Best’s sources.

In the report, Best writes, “Maz was not bad in the role, nor did he stand out in it, and the network evidently believes it can upgrade.”

That’s some unfortunate news. I got to admit, initially, I wasn’t totally on board with Maz, but he grew on me as time progressed. I thought he did a fine job overall, sad to see him go.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain November 14, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Agreed. Initially, I hated him. I grew to tolerate and he becamse comfortable in the role.

He never brought the insight that I expected from his experience.

He tended to parrot ideas from others.

So, to be honest, he will not be missed by me.

thekid024 November 14, 2008 at 8:18 pm

He was definitely bad at first but I got to really like him. I thought he ended up being quite good. I’m a little disappointed he wont be coming back but if they get some one better I won’t care.

shea jones November 14, 2008 at 2:49 pm

I believe “dour” is the word he is searching for.

Tidewater November 14, 2008 at 2:51 pm

I was no fan of Maz an analyst. He’s not nearly on the level of Keith and certainly not Darling.

Flushing_is_Burning November 14, 2008 at 2:57 pm

I’m not a huge fan of his, but good luck, big guy!

NYMETSFAN718 November 14, 2008 at 2:59 pm

The Braves have a mutual agreement with AJ Burnett!! Mets better start makin moves!

PelfreyCyYoung09 November 14, 2008 at 3:01 pm

where’d you hear this? and why should we worry about the Braves? it appears that we’re the only team they can beat, other than that, they won’t touch 1st place :p

NYMETSFAN718 November 14, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Still, there are in our division, and if they can pull a deal for PEavy, they will be a very good team!! The mets cant beat the braves as it is

Metsfan1981 November 14, 2008 at 3:04 pm

I don’t think that’s right. MLBtraderumors says they have “mutual interest” not a “mutual agreement.” Besides, I would think he would wait until after Sabathia is off the market to sign with a team.

PelfreyCyYoung09 November 14, 2008 at 3:14 pm

plus, that’s just one more starter for ATL. they have much more holes than that. look at their outfield.

atlantasnumber1metsfan November 14, 2008 at 3:06 pm

this is how stupid internet rumors get started…try again.

atlantasnumber1metsfan November 14, 2008 at 3:07 pm

and the mets don’t need to beat the braves…they need to beat the phillies or whomever is leading the division at the end of next season…what’s in the past is in the past, and the braves are not a very good team right now, even with Peavy

dave27 November 14, 2008 at 3:24 pm

OMG! Panic! The Braves found a stud to take Mike Hampton’s place on the DL!

There's Always '09 November 14, 2008 at 3:26 pm

it’s “tough guy” :-)

harrychiti November 14, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Does this mean no more “shave zone” commercials?

I heard that on the pink slip they gave Maz, SNY added “tough, guy.”

PelfreyCyYoung09 November 14, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I like Maz :( he was straight to the point and “tough”

spitty1999 November 14, 2008 at 3:01 pm

On Boomer and Carton this morning, Carton stated that Maz will be working for the FAN with Francessa in the afternoons…

They then joked that it will be Mike and the “MAZ” dog…

I think we should all thank Cerrone for getting a Mets presence on the FAN in the afternoons…we know how much Francessa seems to like Cerrone

the_other_matt November 14, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Maz was terrible. No loss.

PelfreyCyYoung09 November 14, 2008 at 3:15 pm

:o Blasphemy!

LetsGoMets123 November 14, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Yallof is terrible

Tidewater November 14, 2008 at 5:02 pm

I agree there.

Joe Janish November 14, 2008 at 3:12 pm

um … MetsBlog is part of the SNY network and the scoop comes from Newsday?

Will Bobby Ojeda be expected to hit the tanning bed twice a day?

zen November 14, 2008 at 3:21 pm

i hope they bring another person in who wasn’t on the 1986 mets. sny has enough already. darling and keith are very good. let’s see another era of the mets

There's Always '09 November 14, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Hmmm…possibly a certain ex-catcher #31 with the 2nd best handlebar mustache of all time?

Tidewater November 14, 2008 at 5:05 pm

Do you even know what a handlebar mustache is? Do an image search.

gipper82475 November 14, 2008 at 4:04 pm

But, 86 is the only Mets era that matters. The era of our youths!

Or, have I missed a tickertape parade since then?

;-)

the_other_matt November 14, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Let’s hope there’s no Boat driving or lawn-mowing in his agreement.

the_other_matt November 14, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I meant hedge clipping: Wikipedia.com
“He pitched well in 1988 but was involved in what some consider one of the most ridiculous accidents in baseball history when he severed the tip of his left middle finger while trimming his hedges in mid-September. After microsurgery to reattach his fingertip (and save his career), he missed the playoffs and the Mets lost the NLCS.”

Tidewater November 14, 2008 at 5:06 pm

You’d think he would have hired gardeners, no? I remember that injury vividly.

LetsGoMets123 November 14, 2008 at 3:25 pm

It was obvious to me that Yallof (Who should also get the axe) did not seem to get along. There was no chemistry between them. At times they seemed to be snippy towards each other. I liked Lee, dislike Yallof (Not as a person, I don;t know the dude). Yallof stinks as an announcer, or commentator. He seems to get annoyed whenever Maz criticized the Mets, even when he asked Maz for his opinion. Maybe Matt can shed some light on this subject. He spent time in the SNY studios. Maybe he noticed some tension between them.

There's Always '09 November 14, 2008 at 3:30 pm

What about Harold Reynolds? Will he be back?

rearviewmirror November 14, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Reynolds will be on the new MLB Network that starts on 1/1/09. He said that he won’t be back on SNY. Al Leiter will also be on the MLB Network and will still appear on YES.

hbrill61 November 14, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Mazz never seemed comfortable in that seat (hated that forced smile)…I would like to see Harold Reynolds get the gig full time.

the_other_matt November 14, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Reynolds signed a deal with MLB tv

roman411 November 14, 2008 at 4:15 pm

I’m gonna miss seeing him in the afternoons smoking on 51st Street.

shannon November 14, 2008 at 4:26 pm

GET PIAZZA FOR SNY

TheMonstersOutOfTheCage November 15, 2008 at 4:54 am

now your tallkin

Zoe November 14, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Mazz became a big bully this year–he was blatantly hostile to Matt Yallof, and it was at times painful to watch. If you’re asked a question about what it’s like to manage or play, you don’t need to give dirty looks, Mazzo. That said, I did appreciate how he always kept it real and didn’t spew at the mouth just for the sake of filling time.

LetsGoMets123 November 14, 2008 at 5:59 pm

So you also noticed the tension. I’m not the only one who noticed how snippy they were with each other. I forgot tabout the dirty looks

djshakes2 November 14, 2008 at 5:30 pm

I rather be subjected to Fran Healy than Matt Yallof. He is so bad he made Mazz almost tolerable.

grmetsfan November 14, 2008 at 6:21 pm

I’d rather hear Matt Yallof over Fran Healy anyday, Healy’s one of the worst broadcasters I’ve ever heard.

Zoe November 14, 2008 at 8:13 pm

I like Matt Yallof–he’s a fan, like us. And he’s not all Mr. Slick all the time, which is refreshing.
