Relief Pitcher: Mets not Sold on K-Rod
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 15, 2008 8:31 am

In Newsday, David Lennon says, ‘The Mets are not completely sold on Francisco Rodriguez,’ according to a person familiar with the club’s thinking.

However, in Lennon’s opinion, ‘this could have more to do with the agent’s early talk of a five-year deal.’

…i believe the Mets have total interest in K-Rod, but are working the market in an effort to get his price to drop, which it will…they like Brian Fuentes as well, though, personally, i would prefer K-Rod, simply because i trust him more on a big stage

i sense the Mets want their next closer locked up before the Winter Meetings, where their focus will likely be centered around starting pitching

translation: we’re not signing k-rod for five years. four? we’ll talk. three? even better. the ball’s in your court, bucko!

    • Hazmet says:

Agreed. The numbers on a K-Rod to me have been lining up in the Pedro signing neighborhood from a few years ago. 3 years at 40 with an option for a 4th year. Not mid 40’s but touch 40 + a vested option for a 4th year at 15M. If it can get done for less great, but I doubt it. Also, concerned about what the Angels know about him that their not interested anymore. Curious.

      • Philnym31 says:

The Angels are using their financial resources towards Mark Texieria as they should be doing. They already have a young, cheap, and very effective Jose Arredondo under contract and waiting in the wings to take over the closing job next season. There is nothing to be concerned about with the Angels deciding not to resign K-Rod.

  2. FlightFromHouston says:

KRod throws his changeup too fast

    • Gland says:

I really hope its KRod. i know fuentes had really good numbers last year, but for some reason i’m not fully sold on him. maybe because he’s gone back and forth a little between 8th inning guy and closer.

i also like the idea that krod would be new to the league and that most of our nl east opponents havent seen much of him.

    • losmets57 says:

He’s been trying to slow it down. That’s why is velocity is down. NOT because of arm problems.

  3. Cactus says:

    trade for putz

    • Gland says:

I wonder what it would take to get him? if the mets really want to remake and upgrade their bullpen they should sign krod then trade for putz or street for the 8th inning. then any other bullpen pieces can slide down to the earlier innings.

  4. BkzMetsFan says:

OH NO. Why do you guys want K-ROD for??

    He’s a LATINO PLAYER!!

Doesn’t Omar get killed constantly on here on these comment responses by a lot of you guys for constantly bringing in Latino players???

IF! IF K-ROD comes here, I just can’t wait until he blows his first big save or has 3 straight bad outings…that “LATINO PLAYER” talk will gonna start coming around again.

    SMH

    • Gland says:

Wow. there is so much wrong with that. is that how you watch games? if the players dont succeed you blame their race or nationality?

and even if you say ‘oh no i don’t do that’, then why do you think the club should be run that way?

    • metman04 says:

Fuentes is Mexican we are getting some1 hispanic either way

  5. tonym says:

The Mets are using Fuentes, when KROD gets realistic , he will be a Met.

    • phukthephills says:

exactly…noone else is gunna give krod 5 yrs and so the mets will wait and he will eventually sign for 3 yrs at 13 mil per year

  6. just-mlb says:

    ^^^^^What he said^^^^^^^^^^

we need to build from the top down..

    1 – Bad azz closer…
    K-Rod
2 – Bad azz 8th inning guy who can close if closer gets injured
    Fuentes
    3. 2-3 Bad azz middle relievers who can be 8th inning guys
    4. 1 long relief guy…I think Darren Oliver is a free agent this year…hmmmmm

    • phukthephills says:

we are not getting krod and fuentes…neither of them would sign to be a setup man and we wouldnt pay over 25 million dollars a year for two relievers plus wagner

      • Gland says:

Very true, we would never sign both. but i do wish we could get an 8th inning guy who had closing experience and who could actually close a game if needed. i know our trade chips are limited but i’d love to somehow get putz, or even street through a trade

    • rustyjr says:

keep dreaming if u think we are getting all 3

  7. ugbmets21 says:

how is it that the yankees know exactly what they want to do and will do anything possible to get there plan. they have soooo much money and a new stadium.

while the mets have a lot of money and a new stadium but we hear guys like ibanez and fuentez?

all im saying, its so impotant for a closer and its not like we will be geting wagner back. we have to think long term i dont like stop-gap players. get putz or jenks.

    • Gina says:

Because the yankees are dumb and spend money foolishly. You see where it’s gotten them lately? I’d rather the mets be slightly stingy than waste money like the yankees and load themselves down with terrible unmoveable contracts.

  8. ugbmets21 says:

    ohh btw…

Fernando Martinez has a six game hit streak in the DWL.
In his first 54 AB he’s hitting a robust .370/.417/.611.

    • rustyjr says:

ugbmets well u know the wilpons the like to be “fiscally responsable” and look when the yankees started cornering the market on all the high price talent they stopped winning world series – being the highest bidder does’nt instantly put u in the world series

    • HOFMets57 says:

Anderson Hernandez used to hit .300+ with an OBP over .400, too in the D.R.

      Just sayin…

  9. rustyjr says:

btw mlb trade rumors says the phillies might go after juan cruz hard

  10. darkstar73 says:

oh that’s right, Krod can be trusted in a big spot on the big stage…because the past 2 postseasons, he’s given up series changing HRs in huge spots. Great analysis.

    • rustyjr says:

darkstar i like the sarcasm but who would u prefer on the bigstage k-rod (i hate those nicknames) fuentes wood or someone from the scrub of the month club that omar could pull outta his tush?

      • gipper82475 says:

        darkstar,

I too thought Matt’s analysis was…..odd, given K-Rod’s recent postseason flubs. However, as rusty said, who would you prefer over K Rod?

    • HOFMets57 says:

Admittedly, he’s struggled a bit in the Division Series.

But do me a favor and look up his ALCS and World Series numbers (when it counts MORE)…

    • losmets57 says:

We shouldn’t think about what he does in the postseaspn. We have to get there first.

  11. oleosmirf says:

unless the Mets can steal a closer from another organization, Rodriguez will be a Met.

Who else the Mets get, that is a complete mystery…

  12. oleosmirf says:

K-Rod has a career ERA of 2.34 imagine what those numbers would be in the NL.

Try to find a closer in Baseball with those kind of number thats not named Rivera.

  13. casey s. says:

Nothing could be more critical than locking up a closer before the other focus points start to heat up. This one is all about money and the Mets have it. I don’t want Omar’s attention split as he tries to get the rest of the team together. The closer is arguably the most important player on a good team, get er done Omar.

    • rustyjr says:

i know but we can’t just give him what he wants ala castillio and not scan the landscape – that blew up in our faces

    • oleosmirf says:

Omar knows how important a closer is but why should he spend more money then he has to.

He’ll wait him out until he drops his demands and if by chance another team makes a big offer, the Mets will have to outbid them.

      • metsrule09 says:

with a healthy wagner last season, we would have made the playofffs plain and simple. imaginae getting krod and even boosting the rotation. as long as we stay healthy i dont see any other eams competing with the mets in 2009

  14. zen says:

i’d taka a look at brad penny for the rotation. 1-year deal with big option for the second if incentives are met.

    sign k-rod. period.

    • oleosmirf says:

yea he’d be a great signing for the back of the rotation

other guys to also look at that can maybe resurrect their careers, Mulder, Clement, Jason Jennings, Prior even Carl Pavano obviously all on 1 year incentive-laden deals with low expectations.

  15. casey s. says:

This is strange. Keith Law of Scouts Inc has his list of the top FA this offseason on ESPN. Now, only the top 10 show for non-insiders. K-Rod isn’t in the top ten, but you know who beat him out? Oliver Perez. What is Law smoking? You have a premier closer below an erratic #3 starter?

    • losmets57 says:

I know, right? That is sooo dumb. Oh Klaw, what happened?

    • PeterDragon says:

      11-30:
      Pat Burrel
      Orlando Hudson
      Kerry Wood
      Bobby Abreu
      Jeremy Affeldt
      Francisco Rodriguez
      Randy Johnson
      Brian Fuentes
      Juan Cruz
      Brandon Lyon
      Orlando Cabrera
      Koji Uehara
      Ben Sheets
      Randy Wolf
      Junichi Tazawa
      Andy Pettitte
      Felipe Lopez
      Jason Giambi
      Mike Mussina
      Edgar Renteria

  16. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I’m still not sold on this K-Rod hubbub. I’d much rather go the trade route, but honestly it seems like that’s getting less likely everyday. So, here’s my adjusted plan for the Mets off-season:

    1. Sign K-Rod to a 4 year, $56 million contract. There’s a lack of competition for him that the Mets should take advantage of before signing him. In all likelihood, nobody’s meeting his contract demands.

    2. DUMP LUIS CASTILLO. Someone will take him. Someone will. Just make sure the names Jose Guillen and Eric Byrnes aren’t involved. I think the A’s can manage to take him if they don’t get Ellis

    3. Trade market. The Mets would have Rodriguez, Sanchez, Smith, Feliciano and Parnell to start in the bullpen next year, and Pelfrey, Santana, Maine and Niese. That leaves three open pitching spots. Our best trade options inclue Heilman, Kunz, Carp and Evans. For the bullpen, my goal is to acquire Edwin Jackson and Nate Robertson.
    The trades would be:

    a. Eddie Kunz, Aaron Heilman, Nick Evans & Michael Antonini for Edwin Jackson and Willy Aybar
    b. Brant Rustich, Nick Carr, and Dillon Gee for Nate Robertson

    4. The Mets, with Aybar at second, then have a complete lineup, but an open rotation spot, two open bench spots and an overwhelmingly lefty lineup. I’d sign Derek Lowe to a 4 year, $48 million deal, Juan Rivera to a 2 year, $6 million deal, and Felipe Lopez to a 1 year deal.

    Lineup vs. RHP/vs. LHP:

    Reyes/Reyes
    Murphy/Tatis
    Wright/Wright
    Beltran/Beltran
    Delgado/Delgado
    Church/Rivera
    Aybar/Aybar
    Schneider/Castro

    Bench vs. RHP/vs. LHP

    Castro/Schneider
    Lopez/Lopez
    Tatis/Murphy
    Rivera/Church
    Chavez/Chavez

    Rotation:

    Santana
    Pelfrey
    Lowe
    Maine
    Niese

    Bullpen:

    Rodriguez
    Jackson
    Parnell
    Smith
    Sanchez
    Feliciano
    Robertson

    • oleosmirf says:

interesting take although Jackson and Robertson are both starters by trade so I would put Jackson in the rotation and let Niese pitch in AAA for a bit with Stokes in the bullpen

Also i’m not sold on Aybar being an everyday player in NY, but he certainly is better than Castillo

although regarding K-Rod, unless you want to trade for Soria, i can’t think of closer in baseball who we could actually get who is better

    • phukthephills says:

      wow

    • mark4212 says:

I wouldn’t mind some of those moves. Ayabar has platoon written all over him, but as has been stated anything is better then Castillo.

Felipe lopez is looking for and has already been offered a multi year contract by the cardinals.

Personally i’d like feliciano gone. he can’t even get out a single A right hander at this points.

Jackson and robertson are both starters. Robertson is a soft tosser and wouldn’t work out well in the bullpen i don’t think.

Also i’m on the Dump Delgado bandwagon

  17. D in Ben Lomond says:

    peavy talks w braves crashed.

    go get peavy!

  18. oleosmirf says:

honestly i don’t think we can get Peavy without giving up Niese, F-Mart or Murphy.

Although if we could make an offer of let’s say Maine, Evans, Parnell and Kunz for starters then signing a 4th starter like Penny would make a great rotation and leave plenty of money left over to sign let’s say Hudson and K-Rod.

    • kingman 26 says:

I think I would give up one of them for Peavy…..

    • Cactus says:

what is this obsession for fernando can’t stay on the field martinez where you don’t want to give him up for someone like peavy?

    • Gina says:

I would give them up for Peavy. I’m just pretty certain that wouldn’t get it done. That doesn’t come close to beating the offer the Braves had on the table. And with Peavy under contract the Padres aren’t really in a rush to trade him like the Twins, for example, were with Santana or the Rockies were with Holliday.

  27. Gina says:

I think the rest of the post it makes it pretty obvious that he wasn’t judging a player on his race but attempting to call out the fans who complain about “los” mets all the time.

  28. Gland says:

Well i didn’t really see that, but if that’s the case please address my comments to those who would actually react that way.

Yes, this is what we get when this anti-Latino, barely literate child is encouraged to post here.

Yes, his U R JERRY game thing was funny the first time it was posted six months ago, but all he is going to do is post the same fart-joke, penis-joke, anti-Latino joke IDIOCY again and again and again, now with the 3rd different screen name. And the only remotely funny part of this, the taco having a hard shell, was lifted from another poster, a grown-up who didn’t use it in an idiotic way.

If only prisons were more strict with allowing inmates use of computers……
