Today, at MLB.com, Marty Noble flatly writes, ‘The Mets have no intention of making a run at Sabathia,’ according to a person familiar with the club’s plans.
In Newsday, David Lennon writes, ‘The Mets will not be involved in the bidding war for Sabathia,’ according to a person familiar with the situation.
Yesterday, the Daily News interpreted this statement to suggest a potential bidding war between the Mets and Yankees:
“Meanwhile, Omar Minaya was discussing a trade for a pitcher with a GM but said he would first have to see how Sabathia’s free agency was progressing, a baseball executive said. A Mets official subsequently wouldn’t deny interest in Sabathia.”
Noble quotes the source as saying, “I’m not sure any club can make that kind of move two years in a row,” referring to their acquisition of Johan Santana from last off season.
According to Joel Sherman in today’s New York Post, the Yankees yesterday offered Sabathia a deal worth more than the six-year, $137 million the Mets gave to Johan Santana last off season.
Yesterday at SI.com, Jon Heyman wrote that the Yankees would make an offer to Sabathia, followed by offers to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe in the next day or so.
…as i wrote yesterday, i have not heard sabathia’s name mentioned as a realistic option by any one connected to the Mets, nor have the Mets and sabathia been linked in any sort of rumor on the Internet…i mean, i would love to see them get involved, but, right now, i just don’t see it happening…
…at the end of the day, i still think sabathia will be faced with two decisions, either go home to Los Angeles, where he wants to play, but for less money and years, or go to the Bronx, which is not his first choice, but for the most money ever given to a pitcher…

CC was a forgone conclusion MONTHS ago, when the biggest name meets the biggest team with the deepest pockets and in a desperate need situation - fuggeddaboiutit.
Those are the dynamics at work here.
The Mets were NEVER getting into this.
I would’ve liked to see the Mets get CC because he’s an athlete just like Santana. You know you are going to get your money’s worth year in and year out.
unless you truly work with n unlimited checkbook, it wasn’t likely to happen for the Mets. No biggie, as long as they use the money to fill other holes.
I am becoming more convinced that zigging is the way to go with the SP now. I like the recent posts about Wolf. I still like my idea about snagging Randy Johnson for 1 year deal. Heck, if you get real desperate, make Johnson the closer!
I also do think that Vazquez would be a perfect fit for the team now.
A rotation of Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Vazquez and Wolf/Johnson, with Neise getting ready in AAA (for the inevitable mid-season call up, and to replace one of the old guys in 2010. or both). Plus snag a reclamation prject, and hope that Holt continues to fast track, filling the Neise role in 2010.
Quick and easy moves, not big money, and don’t require top prospects. Solidifies the rotation, and lets Omar concentrate his resources on best building the pen (now with flexibility to add big $$ like K Rod, or trade for a jenks or pultz type).
Or spend the omney on an offensive talent.
Why not make this simple……Trade Pelfrey, Evans, Kunz and Heilman to the Padres for Peavy. Trade Castillo, Shoe and Kunz to the White sox for Vasquez and have Neise be your 5th starter……………… Trade Delgado to the Blue Jays for middle relief….Sign Hudson and Manny.Sign K-rod,Beilmel and Cruz You would then have the below and Citifield Magic for the next 5 years:
Reyes-SS
Hudson-2B
Wright-3B
Manny-LF
Beltran-CF
Murphy-1B
Church/Tatis-RF
Schneider/Castro-C
Santana
Peavy
Maine
Vasquez
Neise
Cruz
Beilmel
Felicinao
Sanchez
Smith
Parnell
K-Rod
very simple
First of all you traded kunz twice
Second, do you honestly think all of that is going to happen?
thats what makes it simple./
also you ar egiving up way too much for peavy… he was injured a lot last year and didnt even have a great season… and as for CC, he had one of the worst 1st half of a season any pitcher could have coming off a cy young season… even if he goes 9-0 in the second half, im still not willing to pay even close to $136/yr for that kind of pitching. The mets need not to get hot at one point of the season like they are doing now, but to stay consistently “warm” so there is no collapse or a monumental losing streak at the end of the season for the third year in a row
yeah, like i would rather have Peavy and Sabathia than Maine and Pelfrey! duh
Completely agree any rumored Mets interest is to affect the price which doesn’t matter because the Yankee’s will blow everyone out of the water on this one. If they could drive the price up a little it might make Lowe achievable by reducing some of the Yankee’s available operating budget. But then we’re back to after last year’s season in the Bronx price is no object on everyone they want.
What alway’s get’s me is we’re operating in the same market and it’s not outlandish for the Yankee’s to say there going to sign Sabathia, Burnett and Lowe but the Met’s don’t have the resources to go after a Sabathia and K-Rod or Fuentes signing.
Can’t wait to see where Omar lands and what we’ll be watching next year.
That’s why the Yanks make the playoffs every year(except ‘08) and the Mets fall short most of the time. They address their needs and follow through. Omar and the Wilpons were content last year with getting Santana when we had bullpen issues to address as well. This team needs TWO solid starters and a couple of bullpen pieces and maybe an extra bat. Everyone keeps pointing to scoring the 2nd most runs in the N.L. but that is an aberration because they couldnt drive in runners from second with any consistency all year.
You hit it on the head, we’ve got alot of holes to fill and sitting tight and looking for a mix of this year’s Pelfrey breakthrough or other minor league move ups with what they’ve got isn’t gonna get it done. If this year with the mix of talent on the market if they could just spend the money and give some of their younger guys another year’s seasoning in the minor’s they could be in the position to build something really special instead of what we’ve watched the past 2 September’s. But I know it’s not going to happen, they”ll do something but not enough. It’s the same mindset that prevent’s them from signing young draft talent by adhering strictly to the bonus structure that’s in place.
And yes the second most runs. But I think Murphy still standing on third waiting to come home. Ugh.
i would like to see them sign Sabathia and then trade for Vazquez. Sign Juan Cruz and Affeldt and go with closer by committee instead of throwing 14 million a year at someone who pitches 60-70 innings per year.
If we had K-Rod, or a healthy billy Wagner last season we would have won the division easily. No team in our division is going to improve to the point where the Mets are still not the best team.
Santana
Lowe
Maine
Pelfrey
Perez/Martinez/Niese
Reyes
Murphy/Hudson
Beltran
Delgado
Wright
Church
Pagan
Schneider
Smith
Sanchez
Parnell
TBD
…
CL Rodriguez
Tatis
Castillo
Chavez
Castro
with that rosterm we would not have any money to sign hudson as our last prioroty, and we keep sanchez who most people want out, and we wnot have the money to pick up a good reliever. and im sick of all of these people that are putting jon niese at the end of thier rotatoins. so far, he has not proved consistient at all in the majors.
i put Niese third behind OP and Pedro.
I might be alone here but i still like Pedro as the fifth starter. Something tells me he’s not done yet.
I’m pretty sure people said the exact same thing about us and Santana last season. How we’d be far and away favorites to make it to the world series by just adding Santana. And that didnt exactly happen. One free agent/big name is almost never going to make/break a team. Unless that player is like Albert Pujols or something.
The Mets need to be careful about boosting CC’s price, because his contract will set the market, and the higher his contract get, the higher the demands of the Lowe’s etc.
the dodgers are still players and the Angels as well.
I’d love to see him take 15-20 mil less to play for the Dodgers and he probably would.
You know the Yanks will go 160 if they have to.but would they go to 180 for a AAV of 30 mil a year?
that would blow people ou tof the water.
140 is doable if the Dodgers renounce Manny (and they have the outfild depth to do that) - Sabathia would soften the blow of losing Manny.
just bloggin.
15-20 mil less? are you crazy?? no player would EVER choose a place for THAT much less money. possibly 5-7 million or somewher in that range but not 15-20.
The difference between making 23 million a year and 26 million a year isnt really all that big. Over 6 years that is 18 million total.
Or an 11% discount to play in the league and coast that you prefer. I dont think that is a big deal.
How much money do you need anyway?
if someone said ill give you 140 mil to work in a place and for a company you love or 160 mil to be miserable for 6 years which one do YOU chose?
I take the 140 every day.
I agree but that doesn’t mean every athlete agrees. Just for example A-rod took the money to go to a pretty mediocre Ranger team despite having offers from better teams.
I kept hearing that the Yankees were going to blow everyone out of the water with their offer to CC, like 30% above everyone else, and now they offer him a nickel more than we offered Santana when we weren’t competing with anyone to sign him?
Way to go and blow everyone out of the water!
btw, I’ll take Santana over CC any day, and especially in 4 years after the buffet lines have killed CC.
CC Sabathia is the next David Wells.
“CC Sabathia is the next David Wells”
ok boys, sounds like jealousy to me. Sabathia is an ace and one of the top 3 or 4 pitchers in baseball. There is as much chance that Santana gets hurt as there is Sabathia getting hurt. His weight has no bearing on his arm and any pitcher’s arm can fall off at any time.
I’m not jealous, Wrightstuff. I know CC Sabathia is one of the great pitchers in baseball. I am thankful though that we have a better front-line starting pitcher, who is in top physical condition and probably even coming at less money when it’s all said and done. Johan is a rock. He’s about as flawless as you can get out there. He very well has the capability of maintaining his high performance level throughout the entire duration of the long term contract. It’s a feat that is a rarity among pitchers that have been signed to these type of deals. Why is that so? Well, it’s because of either age or physical conditioning. There is no denying that Johan is the better athlete of the two. And, I’m sure when deciding who to hand a contract of that magnitude, for many people, it’d be Johan Santana everyday of the week.
As in, pitch 21 years in MLB, pitch till he’s 44 years old, or win 239 career games, two World Series rings, and consistently pitch for postseason-bound clubs?
As in, shelling out the largest contract ever for a starting pitcher in the history of baseball to a guy who cannot even compete with Johan’s physical stature and is bound for the repercussions in the coming future.
hear, hear!
That is total speculation that CC will get hurt in the future. And i wasnt saying that Sabathia is better than Santana because i would rather have him over CC too but you were making it sound like he is garbage and he will get hurt because of his weight. There isnt a pitcher on the FA market that comes close to CC. Peavy would be second if he was a FA but he is available only in a trade. The rest of the starters are either injury prone or too old!! I would pay for CC way before handing out fat contracts to these other overrated starters on the market. And please no Pedro as he is DONE. Getting CC would push Pelfrey and Maine down a notch where they belong.
Sorry, but first look at what Wells and CC each did by age 27 before making such a ridiculous comparison. It is a completely irrelevant comparison.
And saying CC is “bound for” physical troubles, when he is 27 and has a fine record of health, is really silly.
CC’s numbers have gradually improved across the board his entire career (IP, WHIP, K, BB, ERA) and when he may indeed eventually need to lose weight, right now he is 27, not 35.
Of course Johan is in better shape, but that really has zero relevance to CC. Listen to WrightStuff, he is Wright.
thank you kingman,lol
It seems like its going to be hard to grab Lowe because the Yanks made a pretty big offer to him. The details haven’t come out yet, but I hope it isn’t in the $15M per year range.
I dont think 15 million range is really a pretty big offer. I’m pretty sure thats what most people are expecting him to get. But I don’t think money is going to be the issue with getting Lowe it seems like we’re low on his priority list, just from what I’ve read. Although to be completely honest I may be confusing him with someone else but I’m pretty certain he wants to go back to Boston and Boston wants him back.
