Relief Pitcher: Was K-Rod in NYC for Physical?
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 16, 2008 7:56 pm

According to El Universal, Francisco Rodriguez traveled to New York City ‘to be checked by doctors,’ in advance of eventually signing a contract with the Mets, according to a source linked to the closer.

“The Mets have made the best offer so far,” the source tells the Venezuelan newspaper, “though I know he wanted more money than what was offered.”

…i hate when this happens…time and time again, reports from foreign newspapers indicate items that never come true, when dealing with the baseball rumor mill…yet, i have to post them, because you just never know

…my standard policy is to post these tidbits, but always suggest you take them with a grain of salt, at least until other media outlets begin confirming the information

Update…9:25 pm

i was only able to connect with a few people, some media, some connected to the team, and i have a feeling the above link could be untrue…also, at this point, the best and brightest, i.e., Jon Heyman, Joel Sherman, Buster Olney, Ken Davidoff, Ken Rosenthal, etc., have yet to write anything suggesting the above on their blogs or websites…so, there you go

Update6:15 am

According to the New York Post, the story from El Universal is ‘total BS,’ which adds, “We’re not saying Rodriguez to the Mets is never going to happen, people, but it ain’t happening now.”

Meanwhile, in MLB.com, Marty Noble quotes a Mets official as saying the report is ‘untrue,’ and Rodriguez’s agent, Paul Kinzer, did the same.

According to Noble, per Kinzer, the Mets and Rodriguez have been in touch, but no offer has been made.

However, according to NY Mets Report, 1050 ESPN Radio’s Rich Coutinho recently said on air that Rodriguez will be in New York City on Tuesday.

Lastly, at the beat writer’s blog for the Star Ledger, Jeremy Cothran writes the following:

“As Dan Graziano suggested, sometimes these reports have a tendency to hit the center of the mark…

“The same thing happened with the Erik Bedard trade to the Mariners last winter. A report out of Diario Panorama in Venezuela said the Mariners had pulled star prospect Adam Jones out of winter ball and were shipping him to Baltimore for a physical.  The M’s denied it, but all it did was stall a deal that was eventually finished.”

…thanks to Andres M for the link, and the wild goose chase

now let’s go out and get manny!!!!!!

  2. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

    Hey, lets get it done.

I would consider Pelfrey and Heilman to SD for Peavy.

If SD likes it, that would give us two solid aces, and then can fill in the rest pretty easily.

    • phukthephills says:

pelfrey is going to be a better pitcher than peavy is…peavy is very very good but look at his stats by game..he only pitches 6 innings every game…pelfrey is a good sinker ball pitcher which isnt very easy to find…i see pelfrey being the #2 for the mets for years to come

      • pedro4545 says:

I like Pelfrey as much as the next guy but I don’t think he’s gonna be better than Peavy. You’re right about Pelfrey being a very good #2 for years to come but Peavy, in my mind, is a legit #1 ace. A top of the rotation with him and Santana would be scary. I’d do that trade.

        • rockets212 says:

i defidently do that but there is no way the Padres will take that offer, throw in murphy or f-mart and its a maybe and i wouldnt do that deal

        • bucknersankles says:

PEAVY IS A PROVEN COMMODITY, PELPH IS UP AND COMING, PELPH HAS ALOT OF UPSIDE AND WHEN HE TURNED IT AROUND THIS YEAR IT WAS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY, I THINK MIKE PELPHREY IS THE REAL DEAL IN THE MAKING AND THE BOY CAN PITCH IN NY ( AS WE KNOW NOT EVERYONE CAN DO THAT ) THE GUY WAS LIGHTS OUT AT ONE STRETCH.

    • elmetfano says:

no way in hell I want the Mets to trade Pelfrey, if anything I like Pelfrey BETER then an injury prone Peavy
if you don’t think that then the fact that im saying that should be enough as a NO!
and also Heilamn can real in more from ARZ and TB then “the toss in” in that deal
sorry but thats a terrible deal, sorry

    • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

granted if we get the Pefrey that was very dominant in the middle of the year I agree.

There has to be question whether he can repeat the success of his breakout year.

I hope you are right and that he can. if there is any question, now is the time to trade him.

    • CaseStreet says:

Interesting idea. I’d rather stay with Pelf and hope he turns out to be Brandon Webb in the making.

  3. phukthephills says:

    O BOY THIS IS EXCITING!!!

  4. elmetfano says:

Man I really hope we get K-Rod, I understand his crazy windup and the way his velocity has decreased makes people worry. I’m not trying to be one of those “OMG K-ROD YO WE GOTTA GET UM! YO!” guys, If there was a way to tell that Fuentes would be the option both long and short term then great, i’ll take fuentes. but man K-Rod and the Mets seem like the perfect match.
I would also LOVE for the Mets to get Jenks, He’s so good and he throws Heavy, heavy heat

Note If Wagner can come back really really late 09, Fuentes does have SU experience… just something to play with in your mind.

    • elmetfano says:

      oh 3 things
      1) forgot the word “better” between the words “the (better) option
      2) Jenks I dont want to cripple our farm system for Jenks, especially when there is so many closers that are free agents that are out there. If we can get him at a decent cost then sure, just not a F-Mart cost
      3) the thing about Wagner coming back probably wont happen

  5. losmets57 says:

The Mets made an offer and we didn’t hear about it? I’m glad it was the best offer, though. Do you think it was 4/56? 4/58?

  6. thevoyagerrocks32495@yahoo.com says:

hey so did the mets sign k rod or was that only a report mets.com didnt say anything bout it

    • Meddler says:

Wait till we hear this from ESPN or Fox, its hard to evaluate the validity of a foreign report like this. If its true, we’ll hear about it from a more reliable source soon enough.

  7. wallybackman says:

I hope its not for more than 3yrs plus an option… plus, 14-15 mil is WAY too much for a 70 IP pitcher… this has become a market flooded with closers… sure hes the “best,” but at what cost to filling other needs?

    • phukthephills says:

well i dont think this is true but if it is im guessing its a 3 yr deal cuz it says that krod really didnt like the offer or wanted more or something like that…it might be 4 but def not 5

  8. bkfitz says:

Last year some paper said the White Sox signed Dotel. Both sides denied it, and then Dotel did sign with the White Sox.

    • thevoyagerrocks32495@yahoo.com says:

so who would be excited if the mets signed k rod!!!!!!! i no i would!!!!! they should go agter fuentes or street for a su guy

      • phukthephills says:

fuentes will not sign as a setup guy and the mets wouldnt pay him that much money to be a setup man

  9. Bacci says:

Hear that boys? We got K-Rod!!!

    • thevoyagerrocks32495@yahoo.com says:

its not official though it was only a report and mets.com didnt say anything bout it

  10. Toshea says:

I will love this, but like matt says “a grain of salt”

  11. dominicanboy08 says:

a few years back I thought duaner sanchez and k-rod were the same pitcher..lol and I hope this report is true because he is the best closer available and we need him badly.

  12. metsfaninpa says:

    k rod!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. metsfaninpa says:

if we sign him wat number is he going b/c santana wears 57

  14. metsfaninpa says:

    he should wear 99 lol

  15. BBmetsfreak36 says:

I love Krod, but dont get ahead of youselves.

  16. 1331 says:

last year a foreign newspaper announced the signing of Luis Castillo and unfortunately were right

  17. stickguy says:

K Rod does worry me just a bit (more accurately, the idea that he might not live up to expectations). But in terms of the future of the Mets, I would probably feel better if they signed him, thus taking away the option of Omar gutting the farm in a trade for a closer!

That, and if this spot gets nailed down, he can concentrate on filling in the gaps (which I really hope don’t include Lowe).

A couple of real set up men, an dark horse SP (Johnson or wolf), and a low boudget (salary dump) trade with Chi Sox for Dye and/or Vazquez could just about srap up the big moes.

Then of course eleive whatever excess you need to. And of xoure, get rid of Castillo in the process!

    • gg315 says:

Why would he move so soon? Is he desperate? Is something wrong?

      • thevoyagerrocks32495@yahoo.com says:

        ya really

      • stickguy says:

        Who move?

If K rod, it could be cause he wants to go to NY, or thinks that if he waits, the money teams will get a closer and he will be left standing at the end of the musical chairs game. Remember, teams have a bunch of SPs, but just 1 closer! So maybe he is hedging that the deals might not get better, and get it over with.

Same with Omar. He might just offer more than he might get him for later, just to nail down a deal.

If they both compromise and want to move in together, just get it done and move on.

The Mets could also have given him an offer with a deadline, since their are other options and they have certainly expressed interest in them!

FOr sure though, some team is going to play the cards right, and get a real good deal on one of the leftovers!

  18. cousinrk says:

The same newspaper also reported the Mets made the playoffs the last two years.

  19. professor met says:

I just read the article and the paper quotes an anonymous source close to K-Rod. Definitely a grain of salt.

  20. Philnym31 says:

24-year-old lefty R.J. Swindle (1.53 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 67 K in 53 innings between Double- and Triple-A last year) is a minor league free agent. There’s one relief pitcher I would look into signing for at the very least to provide us some depth. We should be bringing these kind of players into spring training and even having a better emphasis on the Rule V Draft as well.

    • 1331 says:

he is the guy that threw the eephus to wright and he hit it for a homerun

    • stickguy says:

I love this kind of thinking. Grab arms and maybe for once the Mets get lucky with a guy coming out of nowhere to snag a bunch of saves. Every year there is at least one unknown that inherits a job and becomes a “stud” of some kind.

and doesn’t have to be a closer. Get interesting arms to fill in MR spots, in case the cloer spot comes open again.

      • Philnym31 says:

Exactly, Stickguy. The more arms, the better… and the more likelihood that one happens to indeed pan out. It all starts with building that arsenal though.

    • huge_mets_fan11 says:

It is funny that you mention Swindle because my teacher is his agent so I get the insider track to what teams he is talking to. My teacher told me on Wednesday that he is looking at the A’s and Blue Jays right now. I will ask him if the Mets are interested because he would be a perfect left hander out of the bullpen. He has only a 84 MPH fastball but a 50 MPH curveball so it that makes his fastball look faster than it is which is a good weapon for him.

      • Philnym31 says:

Yes, HugeMetsFan11, please do and get back to us. That would be a terrific update.

        • huge_mets_fan11 says:

Not a problem, I’ll ask him about it when I see him on Wednesday.

        • Philnym31 says:

          Thanks.

        • Philnym31 says:

HugeMetsFan11, when I think about it, it doesn’t surprise me that the A’s and Blue Jays are interested in him. Billy Beane is always on top of these young players that slip through the cracks. His scouting department goes out there and picks them off the tree annually it seems. They’re just that good. And, the Blue Jays too, I mean, they have the lowest team earned run average almost every year for a reason. They always fill up on these young talented pitchers to slot into the bullpen. We should be taking notice and doing the same.

  21. gg315 says:

Can anyone recommend any solid MLB sites that can someone like us can go and acquire stats beyond ERA, W-L and K’s?

  22. Tidewater says:

I would think it very unlikely that he’s agreed to anything this soon after the free agency period began

  23. stemog1 says:

For what it’s worth, mlbtraderumors.com picked up Matt’s story, It’s a really good site with all rumors from everywhere. Again, it’s Matt’s story that they have, but the fact that they picked it up may mean something. Then again, it may not. The guy that runs the site, Tim Dierkes, is pretty reputable. We all know that K-Rod is at or near the top of the Mets’ wish list, so it’s not really going out on a limb with a story like this since many people expect it sooner or later anyway.

  24. losmets57 says:

Hey, what do you guys think of signing Milton Bradley. I knwo he’s got injuries against him, but he seemed to be fine last year. Would you sign him?

    • Philnym31 says:

LosMets57, I have been on record in favor of bringing in Milton Bradley this winter. Unfortunately, it does not seem many people are on board with us. He would be a great addition though and the best part of it is how he ranks as a Type B free agent, so we would not lose a draft pick in the process. Bradley is strong both offensively and defensively. Also, he seemed to taking strides to put his bad reputation behind him while in Texas and was a fine teammate. I think an influence like Jerry Manuel could even do him a greater good and probably really flourish. He is injury prone, but Fernando Tatis and maybe even Dan Murphy, if he isn’t playing at second base next year, can provide us some insurance there to back him up. Bradley would just need to continue to keep his head on straight like did this past season and work on staying healthy.

      • Philnym31 says:

Although, I would tell you, if there is any truth to the rumors surrounding Jermaine Dye, I’d be in favor of that move if the price weren’t steep. I would consider Milton Bradley a viable option though.

  25. wallybackman says:

    NY POST says “untrue”

“Um, yeah … about that Venezuelan newspaper report that Francisco Rodriguez was in New York today for a physical in advance of signing with the Mets. Not true at all, according to multiple people on both sides of the situation. “It’s total BS,” said K-Rod’s weary agent, Paul Kinzer, who had received three phone calls about the story just within the past hour. We’re not saying Rodriguez to the Mets is never going to happen, people, but it ain’t happening now.”

    • metman04 says:

check his player profile on rotoworld it says kinzer denied it

    • CaseStreet says:

Well, doesn’t he have to deny it. A deal probably isn’t done until after the medical reports, etc. So they have to deny these things. Plus, I’d imagine the team would be the ones to admit it once they’ve dotted the I’s and crossed the T’s.

  26. CaseStreet says:

See ya Billy da Kid, Hello K-Rod da Kid.

Seriously, I just saw K-Rod hanging out on Northern Blvd. with Jose and Johan. OK, maybe I’m just really excited.

Either way, by the end of the week K-Rod is a Met. Case Closed.

  27. RichardK says:

If you ask me, it’s a load of bull… I wont belive it untill I see it. For real.

  28. GatorMet says:

My favorite part of a bad google translate of the article, which says of Rodriguez, “who comes to impose a record for Major League, with 62 rescues that conquered during the regular harvest.”

    This man is an animal

  29. Markiss87 says:

Its probably not true but he will sign with the mets anyway. Manny your next on our hitlist lol

  30. Markiss87 says:

cc is gonna break down i feel so forget him i like tex better
