News: Giants sign Jeremy Affeldt
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 17, 2008 2:53 pm

The Giants have signed free-agent LHP Jeremy Affeldt to a two-year deal, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

interesting, in that i expected him to land a similar three-year deal to what Damaso Marte got from the Yankees…this is good news

The Cardinals, Indians, Rockies and Mariners had all been linked to Affeldt during the last week.

During the last two seasons, spanning 149 appearances and 78 innings, the the 29–year-old Affeldt was 5–4 with a 3.44 ERA pitching in relief for the Rockies and Reds.

Awww, this suuucks.(say it Grace Adler style). I wanted him. Whatever. Beimel, don’t disappiont me, too! :(

  2. I would have thought he’d at least get the 3 years that Marte got.

This is good, action is happening.

Wow, that is surprising. Considering Marte got 3 years/$15M, I thought Affeldt would get at least $12M for 3 years. I, personally, think he’s better than Marte so this is surpirsing.

Perhaps the closer market is drying up, which might lead to K-Rod taking less to come to the Mets.

only the yankees give out contracts like that, ie. Kyle Farnsworth, they are not a smart organization

        No kidding:

Hanky and Cash: We are offering CC 160mm

“dan’s mets supersite dot com”: I heard an unfounded rumor from a friend the Mets are in the hunt for CC…

Hanky and Cash: Oh Yeah?? 200MM!!!

        Really?

How about the Mets giving up a second round draft pick and giving 3 years to David Weather a few years back?

How about the Mets saying they would not sign a reliever for 3 years to justify not resigning Bradford then giving 3 years to a bum like Schoeneweis?

I don’t care about Affeldt. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again- NEVER SPEND FREE AGENT DOLLARS ON MIDDLE RELIEF.

Middle relief is a cr*p shoot. They aren’t good enough to close and aren’t good enough to start. The best bet is to audition a ton of arms or trade for middle relief help.

    • Affeldt is not a closer. The market is as open as it was before. What closers have signed? Besides Gregg getting traded, all else is essentially the same, for closers at least.

well, what would have been good IMO is if the mets had signed him for this deal.

cant just focus on a closer and nothing else. IMO, almost more imortant to shore up the MR corps with at least 2 new guys.

The rest can be patched together.

Beimel does seem to be roughly equivilant to Schoenweiss though.

What the heck, just keep the best 5 strong power arms you can find in ST and make that the pen!

    2 years, 8 million.

  6. Gina says:

Thats not good news. I was really really hoping he could end up here.

  7. Elastic says:

Affeldt would have been a nice pickup for the Mets.

Giants got him cheap. Looks like Beimel will want 3yrs.

Omar is sleeping at the wheel again!! He needs a lot more relief help than one of those overpaid closers can give. He better get Cruz and someone else as well as a closer.
