Starting Pitcher: Braves move on from Peavy
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 17, 2008 10:05 am

Braves GM Frank Wren told MLB.com that he is no longer involved in talks with the Padres regarding Jake Peavy.

According to the report, “This might not completely rule out the possibility of Peavy joining the Braves in the future… But it proves after a six-week pursuit of Peavy, the Braves are moving on and putting more of an emphasis elsewhere to satisfy their need for starting pitching.”

This weekend, Padres GM Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he does not see a potential deal with the Braves or Cubs.

Meanwhile, at FOXSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes, “The Yankees and Padres discussed Peavy at the GM Meetings earlier this month in Dana Point, Calif.”

According to a major-league source, explains Rosenthal, the two teams already have had ‘numerous discussions.’

the way i have heard it, peavy has no interest in waiving his no-trade clause to pitch in New York, especially if it means pitching in the American League East…however, i wonder if he would re-consider if the Yankees offer to extend his contract beyond the potential four years and $70 million that is left…

…as a Mets fan, i hope the Yankees get peavy, because the Mets most likely will not…and so, if the Yankees get peavy, and sign CC Sabathia, it will most likely mean they’ll be out of the market for Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett and others, who the Mets will try to sign as free agents

Good call from the Braves. They were going to have to part with way too much of their future to the point where getting Peavy still would likely lead to an uncompetitive team.

  2. Gina says:

I doubt they’ve completely moved on. I think it’s more like, don’t call us if you’re still asking for Escobar.

If I were Omar, and if (this is a big if) Peavy would waive his no-trade to come to the Mets, I’d throw every prospect we have at the Padres to acquire Peavy. F-Mart, Niese, Parnell, Murphy, everyone. A 1-2 of Santana and Peavy would be unstoppable. Winning a world series starts and ends with pitching. If the Mets were able to acquire Peavy, sign K-rod or even Fuentes, and sign/trade for a few more guys in the bullpen, they could start printing world series tickets now.

would be a dream come true..unfortunately i think he lands up in the midwest somewhere probably the cardinals or the cubs…or maybe the giants…how about Matt Cain and other prospects for Peavy….

      • I just think the Padres would be foolish to trade him in the division.

I don’t understand why they want to trade him now anyway. Yea, his value may be high because his contract is reasonable for the next two years i think, but ace pitchers don’t grow on trees. They have Giles’ horrific contract coming off the books after this season. I think Peavy is the least of their problems. Wouldn’t be shocked to see him in a Padres uni next season.

    • RodKanehl says:

You mean unstoppable like that unstopable bunch of starters the D-Backs had last season. Hate to tell you this, ittakes 25 to make a team, not 2.

      • kingman 26 says:

No he probably means unstoppable like Schilling and Pedro, Schilling and Randy Johnson, or Seaver and Koosman, or Jim Palmer and his other aces, or Koufax and Drysdale. Two aces can lead an otherwise good team to the title. And of course we still need bullpen help.

Webb is not close to Santana, and Peavy is far better than Haren.

This quote makes more sense than just about anything else written on this site:

“Winning a world series starts and ends with pitching. If the Mets were able to acquire Peavy, sign K-rod or even Fuentes, and sign/trade for a few more guys in the bullpen, they could start printing world series tickets now.”

The Cards have plenty of young talent
The Cubs could trade Smardija etc.

    • kidfromqueens says:

I don’t see the Cubs getting something done if the Padres didn’t like what the Braves were offering enough. Samardzija has a major league contract with a no trade clause and now that they’ve traded Ceda, their minor league system gets real thin after Vitters, who they would hate to trade.

The Cards have enough prospects to get something done, so that’s possible, especially since they’re supposedly one of the teams he wants to go to. Mozeliak has been dismissing the Peavy talk all off-season, but who knows….

Hmmm, something for discussion perhaps. With Citibank cutting another 20% of it’s workforce how long before they pull out of Mets deal. Probably not but do they reduce the 200 million dollar deal?

    • Prismo says:

I would think if it’s a signed deal..then they have to honor it. It’s legalized and what not.

But maybe if Citi____ files for bankruptcy they might have more flexibility.

      • PAPDOG67 says:

Citigroup is not going bankrupt any time soon. Believe me. I work in the industry, and while they’re struggling right now, they’re in better shape than a lot of other banks out there.

    • bigchart333 says:

i was just thinking that this mornign when i read it…that might affect a lot of the mets thinking when it comes to other things besides free agents….spending 20 mil a year to have ur name on a stadium looks like a horrendous deal in this economy

  6. RodKanehl says:

You are so typical of Met thinking. Don’t get the best. Get ssecond rate, get over the hill, but don’t strive for the best because why? It might mean that the Wilpons willreinvest their rip off prices in the team and oh my gosh, make the playoffs almost every year instead of once in blue moon.

    • Gina says:

It’s not like we have a chance at Peavy anyway.

    • vinluvr says:

The Mets missed the playoffs the last two years not because Wilpon didn’t spend enough to bring in good players, but because the good players he had choked down the stretch.

      • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Not enough talent…get it through your head…..take away Lidge and find out what happens to the Phillies…this year was NOT A CHOKE

      • kingman 26 says:

No, this year we lost first and foremost because of the bullpen. And the second and third reasons we lost were the bullpen. Wright cannot drive in every runner on base when he bats, and Delgado cannot homer in every key situation. No one choked. The bullpen was horrid.

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

dude peavy doesnt even want to play in NY..too much pressure compared to the relative anonymity of San Diego

  7. stickguy says:

1 Sp just can’t make enough difference to make it worth clear cutting the farm system. Even Santana didn’t require that, and certainly not like the package hot rod floated above!

Peavy is good but not god like. and the team needs help for the 130+ fames he just sits around and watches. He also is not cheap $ wise.

Trade for vazquez regardless. They could use the depth.

I still wouldn’[t mind Wolf or Johnson to plug the back end hole (ST deal too). And don’t be surprised to see Vargas take over the 5 hole either if he has a solid winter and is healthy in the srping.

    • Gina says:

I would love to bring in Johnson. Especially since he’s only a Type B. Obviously not as the only starter we add but as a #5 with huge upside.

      • therealsince86 says:

        Yes a rotation of
Santana, Pelfrey, Vasquez, Johnson, Maine would be more than good enough. Then you would still have Vargas and Niese as potential backups.
That only cost you around 15 million for the 2 of them and they would both be on short-term contracts.

        • therealsince86 says:

And not only that, it would leave you plenty of room to get Krod and then a setup man. Then trade a few parts to upgrade other area.

        • stickguy says:

TRS, we seem to think alike for the most part (well, at least as it pertains to putting together the team for 2009!)

Now just have to get Omar to bring us in on a consulting basis… Of course, he can get it all for free right here.

I think we are advocating balance, reason and ST needs as opposed to fantasy BB (spend like the Yankees! Get all the big names on LT contracts!)

I’m more interested in plugging actual needs, not ’sexy” names. It did work for the Phils last year!

Now, just have to see what Omar thinks…

Let him have his big splash FA signing of a closer. Then do the rest our way.

  8. jamie says:

Peavy would be awesome. Never happen, but it would be awesome.

  9. CitizenSnips says:

Not to sidetrack too much but does anyone know what’s going on with Murphy? He hasn’t played in a week.

    • therealsince86 says:

He’s being traded for a White Sox player? Other than that who knows. He was injured a few weeks ago.
