View: The Grass is Down at Citi Field

by Matthew Cerrone

The grass has been installed at Citi Field, according to these recent photos at WCBS, taken by Tom Kaminski in Chopper 880.

…that is a weird-looking outfield wall pattern, especially in right-center field, where it actually cuts in and then goes back out…

…someone better get Carlos Beltran and Ryan Church a GPS system, so they do not bang heads

thanks to Scott B for the link

Scott B? As in Scott Boras?

He’s hyping up the dimensions and field at Citifield so they can charge even more for tickets prices!!!

losmets57 November 17, 2008 at 12:51 pm

losmets57 November 17, 2008 at 1:28 pm

I’m willing to spend 2 unemployment checks.

Number57 November 17, 2008 at 1:30 pm

I second this.

egnirc November 17, 2008 at 12:57 pm

It looks like they did remove the Agee HR marker from Shea.

DjDeF November 17, 2008 at 1:06 pm

That has been confirmed. Matt posted on this a few weeks ago I believe. It was either Matt or the guy at Uniwatchblog.com

egnirc November 17, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Cool, It must have been a rare post I missed.
All I remmber was the Mets PR guy saying it would cost too much to remove it.
Thanks for letting me know.

That graphic is ridiculously hilarious, if only for its relation to this post.

koosman3669 November 17, 2008 at 1:12 pm

I know its an optical illusion, but it looks like both foul line go into the stands, which only indicates there is absolutely no foul ground whatsoever along the lines in the outfield. It will be a little bit more of a hitters park than Shea was.

FSMetFan November 17, 2008 at 1:29 pm

not quite…the gaps are much deeper and the walls are much higher…hitting hrs to the gaps will not come easy

the_other_matt November 17, 2008 at 1:14 pm

What are the dimensions? is this going to be like Citizen’s park?

mouserdz November 17, 2008 at 1:16 pm

mets.com has the dimensions

NYMETSFAN718 November 17, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Left Field – 335
Left Center – 379
Center – 408
Right Center – 383
Right Field – 330

NYMETSFAN718 November 17, 2008 at 1:20 pm

AND THIS WAS SHEA’S DIMENSIONS

Left Field – 338
Left Center – 371
Center – 410
Right Center – 371
Right Field – 338

NYMETSFAN718 November 17, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Citifield is shorter down the lines, but deeper in the gaps

FSMetFan November 17, 2008 at 1:29 pm

and dont forget in some spots in the gaps the walls are 18 ft. high

kidfromqueens November 17, 2008 at 1:26 pm

The dimensions are comparable to Shea’s- we really won’t know what it will play like until next summer. A lot of it will depend on the wind, and in that area, we won’t know for sure how things will play out until the structure of Shea is completely gone and the actual summer weather patterns are in effect. It will almost certainly be more hitter friendly just becasue Shea was one of the most pitcher friendly parks in baseball, but it looks to me like the odds are it will be more of a neutral or slightly pro-pitcher park than a particularly hitter friendly one.

Metshead1974 November 17, 2008 at 1:34 pm

It seems like it’ll be a pitchers park, and hopefully so. New ballparks like Citizen’s Boink are a complete joke, like arena baseball.

NYMETSFAN718 November 17, 2008 at 1:38 pm

The fact that there is very very little foul territory also helps the batter IMO..

CBP is nice, but it is a joke of a ballpark playing wise. Carlos Beltran is going to love that right center field fence huh? Wow.

Better hit em down the line.

turk99 November 17, 2008 at 1:53 pm

if you recall, in spring training they modified the wall to match this layout.

There's Always '09 November 17, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Yes, and I also recall your shark tooth necklace. Were those real?

ravi3 November 17, 2008 at 3:02 pm

actually it wasn’t a shark tooth necklace…It was a necklace made of teeth from animals he had killed, I believe.

Markiss87 November 17, 2008 at 1:57 pm

I pretty sure its going to be more of a hitters park. If look at the outfield theres going to be seats out there that would block the wind so the ball will carry much better.

MH November 17, 2008 at 2:51 pm

Notice that the playing field at Citi does not lie along the same north/south/east/west axes (plural of axis) as Shea did. The wind patterns are going to be different from Shea apart from the presence of stands in the outfield and the relative lowness of the upper rim of the park . Then there’s the question of the sun and how it will affect fielding. The dimensions would seem to make it a fair park. It’ll be interesting.

Field of Fail.

Let’s hope that’s what the rest of the NL East will experience when they visit, as opposed to the prone greeting recent Met teams have been offering.
