The Red Sox have traded OF Coco Crisp to the Royals for relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez, reports Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

“The Astros seem likely to trade Ty Wigginton and Jose Valverde,” according to the Houston Chronicle.

Wigginton, who bats right handed, and played third base and left field, hit .285 with 23 HR and a .350 OBP last season for the Astros, while batting .340 against lefties.

Meanwhile, MLB.com reports, “The Nationals are still players in the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes,” according to a baseball source.

Speaking of the NL East, now that the Cubs signed Ryan Dempster, the Padres may re-start talks with the Braves regarding Jake Peavy, says the San Diego Union-Tribune.

In fact, at SI.com, Jon Heyman says Peavy will either play for the Padres or the Braves next season, while citing a league executive.

I always liked Ty. Maybe play Ty at 2nd? Weren’t the Astros interested in Castillo last year?

ravi3 November 19, 2008 at 11:34 am

At the very least, Ty would make a great platoon partner with Murph

BiggieSmalls November 19, 2008 at 11:35 am

you pay him 8 mil a year to just bat against lefties/?

stickguy November 19, 2008 at 11:36 am

paid alou 8 million to not bat at all last year.

BiggieSmalls November 19, 2008 at 11:39 am

so at least wiggy can sit on the bench and pinch hit for his 8 mil?

what would valverde cost in prospects? he’s a former all star and proven closer. cant come cheap. would think Street would be cheaper /

therealsince86 November 19, 2008 at 12:02 pm

Wiggington can’t play 2B anymore and Houston does not need Castillo with the Kaz Mat contract.

And using past mistakes to justify future ones is just plain silly.

starz31 November 19, 2008 at 12:06 pm

paid 8 mil to El duque to just have a bunion.

We Were Throwbacks November 19, 2008 at 12:38 pm

paid castillo last year to do nothing too…he didn’t play, right?

There's Always '09 November 19, 2008 at 1:14 pm

We paid Bobby Bonilla last year to eat donuts.

GravediggerHebner November 19, 2008 at 11:23 am

If the Mets are somehow scared off of KRod but are still looking for a closer big on histrionics, Valverde fits the bill.

starz31 November 19, 2008 at 12:08 pm

pas-s…he blew a save against us in 2007 and i haven’t been impressed since.

metsrbest November 19, 2008 at 1:07 pm

K-Rod blew a save against us in 2008. I haven’t been impressed with him either!

There's Always '09 November 19, 2008 at 1:15 pm

i completely agree with this sentiment. the guy is an implosion ready to happen every game. i loved wags, but this guy is the right handed version without the track record.

beltran the warrior November 19, 2008 at 11:27 am

no thanks on ty. may as well give the job to murphy.

metsrbest November 19, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Murphy IS Ty with a little bit better plate discipline. I wish people would see that before you anoint the guy as the next untouchable prospect of the Mets.

There's Always '09 November 19, 2008 at 1:16 pm

plate discipline and pitch selection are often the difference between being a platoon player and being an every day effective ballplayer.

BiggieSmalls November 19, 2008 at 11:29 am

they’ve got Kaz at second.
Plus Wiggy will get a big Arb raise this year (shocking he still has one year left til free agency.) — 8-10 mil based on his performance last year.

What about Carlos Lee? He goes from 12-18.5 in 2009 – 2012 . Then we could dump DelGado on an AL team like Toronto.

metsfan3131 November 19, 2008 at 11:30 am

I would take my chances on street or valverde as far as the 8th inning goes then sign k-rod for the ninth

the mets always lacked that fire-thrower and valverde is definatly that.

BringBackDaveTelgheder November 19, 2008 at 11:36 am

Valverde scares me as a New York closer. He gets that Armando Benitez look far too often.

metsrbest November 19, 2008 at 11:47 am

That is why Theo Epstein is the best GM in all of baseball. Take a spare part like Coco Crisp and trade him for an excellent young power arm under their control for a few more years. I wish Theo was the Mets GM

Gina November 19, 2008 at 11:56 am

It’s not just that Epstein is a good gm, it’s that KC’s gm is really bad.

therealsince86 November 19, 2008 at 12:03 pm

I don’t think this is a terrible trade for either team. This allows KC a true CF and opens up a trade of an OF for multiple parts. Wait and see what they do with the OF surplus first.

mikey_FF November 19, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Never underestimate the bad GM factor on a lot of the teams. haha

starz31 November 19, 2008 at 12:09 pm

we tried that with Burgos…the kid had a power arm with upside…but couldn’t stay healthy or sane.

metsrbest November 19, 2008 at 1:09 pm

Except for the fact that Ramirez had much more success than Burgos did. (I still think the trade for Burgos was worth the risk though)

There's Always '09 November 19, 2008 at 1:19 pm

I completely agree with that. It’s not like Burgos pulled a Ugueth Urbina or anything.

kingrw November 19, 2008 at 12:11 pm

wigg makes $8mil??????? wow

There's Always '09 November 19, 2008 at 1:19 pm

yup…does’nt that make you want to be a baseball player?

CaseStreet November 19, 2008 at 12:22 pm

No thanks on Wigg.

Agees Catch November 19, 2008 at 1:20 pm

wiggy for castillo would be a no brainers. he’s a realiable alternative at 1B 2B 3B LF or RF in the event of injury. Even if he isn’t a starter, he would be very valuable as a sub for delgado & wright, who need occasional rest

Tidewater November 19, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Yes it would be. Unfortunately there’d be another team involved that probably wouldn’t see their end as being a no brainer.

The Slider November 19, 2008 at 4:58 pm

I agree. Plus, he’s a hard nosed player. He’s got grit. Grit, I say.

happyrecap November 19, 2008 at 1:41 pm

This team could use a player like Wigginton since he is a gamer. They could use a player like Orlando Cabrera, who is a gamer and could spell Reyes and whomever the 2nd basemen is. I still think I would put Delgado and Heilman into a package deal for pitching and wait for the ink to dry on Teixeira’s Mets deal to pull the trigger.

atlantasnumber1metsfan November 19, 2008 at 2:02 pm

can you explain this “gamer” mentality…i think its a line of bull…

metsforlife November 19, 2008 at 10:25 pm

I would love to see Wiggy back! He could be a super utility type player. I could see him starting like 5 games a week between RF,LF,2B,1B and spelling Wright a few times here or there.
As for as Lee, I would LOVE to get him but I don’t really see how we would have the players to it done.
Valverde NO THANKS, K-Rod is going to be the closer anyway.
