News: Daniel Murphy has a Knee Sprain
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 19, 2008 12:31 pm

According to a league source, Mets 2B Daniel Murphy suffered a right knee sprain in the Arizona Fall League, which is why he has not played since Nov. 10.

Murphy had been hitting .397 with 18 RBI in 15 games during the AFL.

He has played in 163 games this season, counting his time with the Mets, in the minors and in Arizona.

Update3:40 pm

“Murphy is scheduled for a precautionary MRI in New York Wednesday or Thursday,” adds Toby Hyde on Mets Minor League Blog, who cites a team source.

Thank you Matt. Good, this will put the Murphy trade rumors to bed for now…

    • redmarauder07 says:

Doubt a knee sprain would kill any trade rumors…

Matt, I liked how you listed him as a 2B. Wishful thinking…I hope he does actually take over at 2B.

Minaya had been saying he sees him more as a 1B even though he was playing at 2B in the AFL. Unfortunately this injury might take him out of consideration for the starting 2B job b/c he really hasn’t gotten enough playing time there. We might be stuck with LC now…

      • mikey_FF says:

Nah … someone posted on a previous thread some speculation from another website as to why he wasn’t playing. Speculating that a trade was already in the works. That’s what I meant.

  2. Gina says:

Now he’s officially a true met.

  3. kingrw says:

ok enough baseball for danny boy.

let him get lost of rest, look at video of NL pitchers, and be 100% healthy and re-fueled for spring in st.lucie….

    • This guy’s relentless. He’s off to winter ball as soon as he heals. At least he’ll already be conditioned for spring training.

    • stilltheEWM says:

If you want him to play 2b in 09.. then he needs this time.. this probably kills any chance of that happening.

      • darkstar73 says:

it never was going to happen

        • stilltheEWM says:

He fits there the best… so you can’t say never.. he’s kind of a nightmare in LF too… makes Beltran all the more valuable given the OFs we gave him most of th year.

The Mets had said all along he’d go back to OF for winterball since he needs that experience too.. but I’d love them to go on and try to make him a 2b.. as would most of you I’m sure.

        • Razor Shines says:

Unfortunately they have him slated to play LF in winter ball.

        • stilltheEWM says:

Well he needs experiecne there too.. he had some pretty bad mis reads in 08…

So I guess you have to be realisitic

        • MudvilleNine says:

The major leagues just have an agreement with the winter leagues to allow them to use their players. What team a player plays for and what position he plays is totally up to the winter league and its teams themselves. Those teams dont have to take players, dont have to play a player where their major league team would like them to play. The team that took Murphy could just have easily said he’s played left field and we need an outfielder so we’ll take him to play there. Or they could play him at 3rd, or 2nd, or 1st. It’s really up to them.

  4. Prismo says:

    It’s only a sprain people…calm down.

  5. zen says:

any word on whether or not he was decent defensively during those 15 games at second.

i have no doubt that the kid can hit…a lot of doubt he can paly defense at second

    • stilltheEWM says:

All reports say he was fine.. but too few chances too small a sample size to greatly change the opinion that he could do it every day.

      • BiggieSmalls says:

he made FOUR errors at second base in those limited chances.

Most scouts who have commented say he doesnt have the footwork to play there full time.

        • zen says:

i seriously doubt he can play second. hope so, but doubt it.

        • stilltheEWM says:

it’s also hist first time action at 2b.. scouts arent always wright..

        • zen says:

the problem is he was terrible at third in the minors. second requires even more footwork.

        • zen says:

and he had 5 errors in 17 games playing second at double a before they had to move him

        • Gina says:

His defensive short comings in the minors were overblown, the problem wasn’t with his range/footwork so much as his glove.

        • hjhjhjhjhj says:

ok so what your saying is he cant catch the ball? thats a problem, dont you think?

        • zen says:

i dont think 49 errors in 196 games at 3rd is overblown nor 5 in 17 games at 2nd in the minors.

scouts say he can’t field. i hope he can improve.

i wouldn’t bet on it. looks like left field or dh

        • Gina says:

Lol obviously it’s a problem but it’s something that’s more likely be fixed than lack of athleticism and range can.

        • zen says:

          hopefully your right.

        • Gina says:

I hope I’m right too. But I doubt we ever get a chance to see. I don’t think the front office is taking the idea of him playing 2nd base very seriously, which makes no sense considering he’d have to be historically bad defensively to be a worse option that Castillo.

    • Tidewater says:

he made 4 errors, for what that’s worth.

      • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Sometimes players improve through hard work. Utley was a horrid 2b when he first came up but he’s gotten himself to be a legit above average defender.

        So who knows…

  6. CaseStreet says:

I told him to stop trying to turn double plays in his hotel room.

  7. Jay says:

Eesh, we can’t be spared the dreaded “red cross” graphic even during the offseason

  8. Prince Ollie says:

NO! 2009 MVP Daniel Murphy is hurt? How will the Mets go on? Put Omar Minaya on suicide watch. Who will prevent the Phillie Phanatic from pouring AIDs blood into the Queens’ water supply now?

  9. the_other_matt says:

Did the right knee sprain come from a pipe wielded by one Luis Castillo (a la Tanya Harding/Jeff Gillooly)?

  10. bkfitz says:

Even in the offseason we can’t avoid the Red Cross of Injury.

    • Mr Met says:

True to the Mets way, they will list him as day to day for the next 3 weeks, then will announce that he needs knee surgery and will be lost for the entire 2009 season.

  11. Agees Catch says:

Shall we set up a prayer vigil outside citifield?

  12. Razor Shines says:

Since it wasn’t posted, his stats for those 163 games:

    569 AB
    105 R
    184 H
    43 2B
    4 3B
    17 HR
    102 RBI
    71 K
    82 BB

    .323 BA
    .409 OB
    .503 SL

    Pretty snazzy.

    • Razor Shines says:

As a point of reference: The 596 ABs were less than Wright, Beltran, Reyes and Delgado had last year (163 games due to less PT per game obviously).

Yet, Murphy had more doubles than any of them, over 20 points higher BA than the next highest, higher slugging than Beltran, more walks per AB and less K’s per Ab than any of them. His RBI and Runs per AB also were comparable to all of them.

Granted most of this was against minor league competition, but still something worth noting.

      • Razor Shines says:

My bad — it was 569 ABs, not 596 ABs, which makes his RBI and R per AB that much better, and the fact that he had more doubles in 50ish less ABs (instead of 20ish as I thought) than the top four Mets even more impressive.

        • hjhjhjhjhj says:

seriously…you are comparing what he did in 131 ML abs and 438 non ML abs to what wright, reyes, delgado, beltran did against all ML pitching…plus stop now….that is in no way a valild comparision….if you want to say that he looks like hes going to be a decent/good player…then ok…but dont bring up stats like you just did….he had 2 hrs in 131 abs….1 hr for every 65.5abs…not exactly lighting the world on fire

        • casey s. says:

the “against minor league competition” kind of renders the analysis somewhat useless.

        • gameball says:

It’s almost identical to DWright’s pre-MLB production in AA (though Wright was 2 yrs younger).

        • hjhjhjhjhj says:

dont go there…back away from the DW comparisons…lets get the guy up here for half a season before we start doing that

        • gameball says:

Simple statement of fact — make of it what you will.

        • Razor Shines says:

Yes, to all the geniuses, I wrote it was merely worth noting. I was not making a direct comparison, merely one based on his stats, which at his age and level of development is often used to gauge his future ability.

One of you even went so far as to say his ML stats should not be used to compare and in the very next paragraph explained why his HR per AB were low relative to a major leaguer. Relative to where he was playing and his age they were fine. But you knew that already! You are smart!

        • ridethesnake says:

Haha, good point. Yes, being that Murphy matched his minor league numbers in the majors, and that this is the level he is still learning, while Delgado has been facing major league pitching for 20 yrs and has a little notebook on everyone, I think it is definitely worth noting. A lot of people consider a minor league career to match in the majors if the player continues to develop — so the question would only be if Murph is going to be the type of player that can one day match those guys. The more I think about your comparisons the more I think some people just like to type angry contradictions. Far from useless information.

  13. I knew it was a bad idea to hire M. Alou as his personal stretch coach.

  14. therealsince86 says:

Posted this on the other side but here it is again. I am proud of myself so it’s time for you guys to take me down a notch.

Ok here it is. HOW TO FIX THE METS WITH 45 MILLION DOLLARS.
    Sign Tex for 8/160 +20
Trade Delgado and Heilman for #5 starter like Sonnastine -12
Trade lower prospects for Vasquez +11
    Sign Krod +15
Trade Fmart, Evans, Castillo and cash for Brian Roberts. +14 (8 for Roberts and 6 million for Castillo)
Trade Schnieder and Castro for prospects that could be used in Roberts or #5 trade. -7.5 million.
Trade junk for Molina in a salary dump. +6 million
Sign Cruz or Biemel +5 million
That puts us at +45.5 million.

Reyes, Robets, Wright, Tex, Beltran, Murphy, Molina, Church

    Santana, Pelfrey, Vasquez, Maine, #5

Krod, Setupman, Stokes, Parnell, Smith, Feliciano, Sanchez/Show/Kunz/Parnell

Now, if I can just convince Omar, the other GM’s and agents involved to do this we will be set.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

you didnt fix our biggest problem….the bullpen

      • therealsince86 says:

I would as sume that Krod and Beimel go a long way towards that problem. You can always trade guys like Show, Feliciano, Sanchez etc to get other BP guys.

      • dominicanboy08 says:

so, basically you are trading our entire farm system while increasing our payroll. doesnt seem right to me!

        • therealsince86 says:

So Fmart and Evans are our entire farm system? Vasquez would not cost that much.

        • therealsince86 says:

Besides where are the holes then needed to be filled by our farm ready guys?
1B, 2B, SS, 3B, RF, CF are all locked up with younger guys. Murphy is in LF. Our starting staff is young and under control then. That leaves C which we don’t have in the minors anyway.
I just think this is better than spening big money on 1 or 2 guys or even trading for old guys.

        • dominicanboy08 says:

but you are expending a ton of money on tex, I rather sign dunn and hudson and we get to keep f-mart. everything else is fine with me.

        • therealsince86 says:

Not to mention, but did you see that lineup? Ryan Church is the #8 hitter. That would have the potential to be the best offense in baseball much less the NL>
Just look at the stats there.

        • therealsince86 says:

With your plan you would spend more money, however. Not to mention that we would not be any better defensively.

        • kingman 26 says:

That lineup is the Big Met Machine.

And KRod and a setup man DOES fix the bullpen.

I like it. Maybe impossible, but I like it.

Adding Murphy, Tex, and Roberts to last year’s lineup would make us an offensive powerhouse in a serious way. And let them pitch around Church in the 8 hole.

        • zen says:

why are you so concerned with saving the wilpons money? they are making a huge profit with the mets.

they already sold out all the luxury boxes for next season ranging from $250,000 to $500,000 each.

        • metsrus says:

I like the moves if only it would come true. Can we get this in front of Omar.

        • therealsince86 says:

I really am proud of myself there Kingman. I don’t think anything I said there is outlandish.
I think a team like Tampa Bay would take Delgado at DH for a year if they got another guy with him. #5 SP is a strength for them so someone will be traded. Basically Delgado takes Floyd’s spot.

The O’s and Roberts is a tough one. They would love to keep him but he’s not going to stay and his contract runs out this season. Fmart and a prospect should be a haul for them. The Castillo part is a stretch but with the 6 million they would be getting him for 3 years 12 million. That’s not a big deal

I have no idea what the Sox want for Vasquez and that could be a sticker. We all know that Gullien wants him out.

Molina, that’s easy and logical. Why would the Giants hang on to him if they could get any future value?

        • therealsince86 says:

ZEN, I am not concerned with saving anyone money. However, I do know that they will not go over the luxury tax no matter how much I want them to. Thus, even though my plan is highly unlikely it still has merritt.
However, saying the Mets should spend 180-200 million I might as well say they should trade Castillo for Ryan Howard as it’s not happening anyway.

        • kingman 26 says:

I think it is a really cool, well-thought out plan…I also said so on the other thread.

The O’s are a comical train wreck, and could very well be willing to trade Roberts and his salary for FMart, just as they did Bedard to the M’s for their top prospect Adam Jones rather than pay Bedard. Roberts of course has an infinitely better track record than Bedard.

And Molina could be a salary dump as well.

KRod plus a setup man fixes the pen, and if Omar can wait out KRod and be the only bidder, which seems likely, maybe we could use the savings on Tex. Even if we did everything on your list other than Tex, it still is a really cool plan.

        • zen says:

thereal. was just curious. definately don’t think the luxury tax is an issue. lots of cash off the books this year: alou, el duque, ollie, pedro, etc

some interesting moves in your plan.

i’d sign k-rod, cruz, and beimel. then trade for dye if they only want kunz and a lower prospect.

either that or go big with the rotation: sabathia and lowe.

        • therealsince86 says:

Luxury tax is an issue based on my count. All that money you have coming off the books a lot of it is taken by salary increases. Like I said, giving a normal increase in salary up to the luxury cap with some wiggle room it gave us 42-45 million to spend this season.

        • gomets019 says:

Great plan. We get Vasquez (proven #3), Sonnastine(young w/ upside), Molina(san fran’s cleanup hitter), and Roberts (all star second baseman) for FMart, spare parts, bad contracts, and a handful of prospects we won’t miss. Sure. Other teams do not exist to help the Mets! Seriously, we’ll get Molina for nothing and then turn around and sell Castro and Schneider for prospects to include in a package for Brian Roberts? why would teams give us good prospects for lesser players and better players for lesser prospects? And you severely undervalued Delgado-was Manny’s second half really so much better than Delgado? If we trade him we should get back a lot more than a fifth starter

        • hjhjhjhjhj says:

pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching….etc..you get the point…one closer and a set up guy DOES NOT fix the problem….

        • chico says:

Your rotation also has 4 RHP in it so a lot of clubs out there are going to eat us alive.

        • kingman 26 says:

No they won’t…no offense, but this lefty/righty thing is comically overstated. Did the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007 suffer from all righty starters? Or the 2006 Cards?

        • therealsince86 says:

Good lord, a guy leaves for 2 hours to coach a little ball and is eaten alive. LOL.
Lets see if I can respond to all of these.
“Sure. Other teams do not exist to help the Mets!
Seriously, we’ll get Molina for nothing and then turn around and sell Castro and Schneider for prospects to include in a package for Brian Roberts? why would teams give us good prospects for lesser players and better players for lesser prospects? ”

Molina is a salary dump. He only has 1 year left on his contract. Do you think it would take a top prospect? Getting Evans or Carp and a couple of lower prospects would be a steal for them.

I never said that the players that we get for Schnieder and Castro would be the best players in the Roberts deal or Vasquez deal. However, with Fmart going for 1 year of Roberts I am sure the other players included would not have to be top prospects. Same with Vasquez, the Sox are not going to get a top prospect for him.

        • therealsince86 says:

          This one is to hjwhatever
Duh we need pitching. We just brought in Vasquez, Sonnanstine, Krod, a setup man. Realistically that’s all we could even hope for in one year. You can always make smaller moves for the pen. Taking guys like Betancourt in a trade or Guardado and Cordero as FA.

        • therealsince86 says:

For Chico. You face a lot more RH than LH one. Two, quality innings are quality innings. These guys are starters and LH, RH is not a big deal at all for starters. Innings and WHIP are much more important than the hand they throw with. Save that junk for the relievers.

    • Tidewater says:

The Rays have a 1st baseman. Why do they want Delgado? What prospects do you think we’d get for our two catchers, and what team is desperate for two catchers in one deal?

      • metsrus says:

        DH

      • therealsince86 says:

I would not trade them in 1 deal. Just for prospects in general or maybe even bullpen guys.

        • dominicanboy08 says:

so you want to trade f-mart and a prospect for one year of roberts? thats too much!!

        • therealsince86 says:

In some ways I agree. However, Roberts fills a spot that we can’t fill with anyone in our system. Fmart fills the OF where we have many options.
If I could get him for the Evans, Kunz and Carp type then sure.

        • dominicanboy08 says:

          now we are talking!!!

        • therealsince86 says:

But you know that the O’s are not going to do that. Chicago would offer them a better package than that.

      • SPINK3 says:

Delgado can be DH..just a more expensive better version of cliff floyd..I like almost everything there thereal..god, roberts would make this team so much better its insane..

    • rockets212 says:

thats 51.5 million just to let you know

      • therealsince86 says:

I think I did not count the 6 million sent for Castillo because that is really not contract money. It does not count toward’s salary. I did not make that clear. Thanks for noticing.

      • casey s. says:

yeah, and i don’t think there is a salary figure in there for sonnanstine.

        • therealsince86 says:

I did not include Sonnanstine because he makes less than 400,000. Hopefully something like that would not matter at all.

        • Moises says:

Must be nice for $400,000 not to matter at all…

          Back to work….

    • enigmoo says:

      or…

Delgado, Pelfrey and Parnell to Toronto for BJ Ryan, Roy Halladay and Lyle Overbay +15

Castillo to CHW for Javier Vazquez +6

Church and Schneider to Giants for Winn and Molina +7

Heilman and Carp to TB for Sonnastine -1

      Sign Orlando Hudson +10

      Sign Cruz +4

      Reyes
      Hudson
      Wright
      Beltran
      Molina
      Winn
      Murphy
      Overbay

      Easley

  15. therealsince86 says:

On to my next rant. If we do not plan on Muprhy playing 2nd base….. I am really ready for this one, we should trade him. I love Murphy and want to see him do well but his trade value will NEVER be higher.
What about a trade built around Murphy for Roberts? Maybe the O’s think he could play 2B, if not they have 3B open in 2010 and 1B open next year.

    • dominicanboy08 says:

I dont think the mets will trade him, omar said he sees murphy as a youkilis type player.

      • Who needs a Youkilis type player when you can have a Manny type player? :-)

      • therealsince86 says:

What Omar says and does are two different things.

If Murphy can’t play 2B and is not great in LF, where does he play 1B in 2010 and utility this season?

        • SPINK3 says:

Does anybody actually believe murphy will play 2nd base?? I sure dont..not ever..We need a power bat at 1st (hopefully we can get rid of delgado) and get tex or Dunn..I would strongly consider trading murphy in a package for roberts..murphy has nowhere to go once fmart is ready..like you said before TRS, a smart GM move is too rid guys at top value, because murphys will never be higher then it is right now

        • Gina says:

I doubt Murphy’s trade value is quite as high as we think, considering he’s only had 150 or so major league at bats, or the mets hype machine makes it seem. But regardless even if it is I don’t think trading him for a stop gap, as good as Roberts is now, is a wise long-term decision. i think his bat is legit enough that he’d provide more value to us as a cheap bench/platoon player, under control for 6+ years.

        • mikey_FF says:

I agree with Gina. Would not be wise to trade the kid. Keep him, let him develop and it will pay off.

        • therealsince86 says:

How is Roberts a stop gap? Because it’s a 1 year contract? Lock him up baby. He’s not old and is showing no signs of decline.

  16. huge_mets_fan11 says:

OT: I know some people here were saying we should sign RJ Swindle(his agent is my teacher) and were asking me to ask my teacher if the Mets were interested. Well here is the update:

My teacher told me that about 8 teams are interested in him, one of them not being the Mets. He said that he is very surprised the Mets have not called him yet considering the Mets are rebuilding their whole bullpen. He also said he was surprised because RJ and Robert Parnell were roomates in college and are very good friends. But as of right now the Padres are the leading candiate to sign him but he wants to wait out to see what the Padres get in return for Peavy and Khali Greene(who they will also trade) because RJ is a lefty specialist and if the Padres get one in return for Greene or Peavy then he will not sign there. So for people that were wondering about that there is the update. I will let you guys know if the Mets become interested in him.

  17. nyj0126 says:

These minor injuries are nothing to worry about… I like that he’s been called a 2B. I haven’t seen him play there yet, so I can’t tell if he is ready for it not.

  18. zen says:

it’s going to be a long year reading nasty comments about the following next year:

    1. castillo
    2. a closer other than k-rod
    3 schoeneweis
    4. heilman
    5. castro and schneider

why cant they get a 2b?
who says there not gettin krod?
they might trade schoenweis and heilman
castros fine and schneider might not be here
who cares about a 3b coach?
what if omar does a good job?
what does willie have to do anything with this?
      whos paris wilpon?
have some confidence in the youngsters, or what if neither of them gets the spot?

      just saying.. Ya gotta’ believe

Please dont let Heilman be on this team next year.

I dont understand why people think the Mets can outbid the Yankees and get Teixera or CC. Sure we need a 1B down the road but not for this season.

We need to address our more important problems like the bullpen, a #2 SP, and 2B

Lowe and K-Rod are the obvious #1 choices but while K-Rod is in the bag, we might not be able to get Lowe. So if someone outbids for Lowe, we need to have a plan B and while i don’t really like him too much we know what Olli can do and he’s injury free. Can’t say that about Sheets or Burnett…

    • I think the injury point is the most important one about ollie. I would certainly look into bringing Ollie back before going after Burnett or Lowe.

OP suffers from brain cramps a number of times of year (and given you PTSD since you don’t seem to be able to remember this fact). And this seems to be a permanent injury.

    • therealsince86 says:

Because the Yankee’s are not going to really even get in the Tex market. I can almost feel it. They will throw some smoke but they will concentrate on CC and Burnett.
They have options at 1B but their SR is in shambles.

I just wanted to mention that Dan Graziano is reporting that there is a good chance that Roy Halladay becomes available on the trade market. Johan + Halladay = Two Headed Monster. Okay, now, I’ll step back into reality.

    • I believe I spoke of a Roy Halladay trade in October. But I wanted to give up DWright straight up for him. That can be tweaked now, as I have cooled off.

    • Also the Giants are going to challenge the Yanks and Dodgers in the Sabathia sweepstakes. Man, the Giants are looking to add lots of payroll. They are talking about going after Furcal as well. Sabathia picked a good year.

Santana was smart and never went to FA. Supply and demand.

      • rustyjr says:

well now that baroid is gone they gotta put coolies in seats so why not go after “el coolie grande”

      • therealsince86 says:

I will believe that when I see it. With that Zito and Rowand contracts hanging around I just don’t see it.

        • rustyjr says:

understood and i respect yer opinion – but zito did salvage his season last year and they did sign affeldt – i guess im a met fan that doest want to see him in yankmee pinstripes lol

        • and if they plan on never signing another big time pitcher while Zito is under contract, they won’t be winning for a number of years. wouldn’t be shocked if they try to unload rowand.

In Metland these “minor” injuries are never that. Bank on hearing about this in ST.

  22. rustyjr says:

oh great word is murph and the magic tones is coming back to nyc for a precautionary m.r.i !!! thats it offer the farm and break lil jeffies piggy bank to get manny!!! :P – note sarcasm

  23. jeenyus245 says:

heres a great idea… try heilman starting.
isnt that what is trade value is

i really dont think the mets should do that however

  24. It’s after 5 o’clock and I’m bored. I need some hot stove action! Do something, Omar!

  25. CitizenSnips says:

Anyone wanna keep Murph around as a utility player for when Delgado eventually leaves so he can take up first? Sorry if it has been suggested but I’m too lazy to read through the comments.

The GM meetings are over, the winter meetings yet to begin, and the arbitration period isn’t over yet, so if there is EVER a time to be lazy, it’s now :-)
