Matt–As a longtime enjoyer of this amazing site, I have to say that it seems as though you are doing an even more incredible job than usual the past week or so keeping us updated with EVERYTHING that is going on, so that we do not have to go anywhere else to keep up…..and these daily recaps updates are great too.
Thank you and keep it up!!
Yes, these posts are a fine replacement for those too lazy to scroll.
i think this rehashing is laziness (like delgado & beltran). too lazy to work and write more original articles. i’m just sayin….don’t ban me bro.
You guys are dingbats.
Maybe it is an EXTRA post Matt puts up for those folks who don’t have loads of spare time, and just want to check out a quick summary of what may be going on.
And Beltran is lazy? Yeah, he never hustles and is constantly out of shape.
but isn’t that the point of the layout, where all the recent posts are on the first page? all you had to do was scroll to see everything that’s in this post.
I really don’t love the Mets approach this off-season, but I’ll deal with it. My real worry is that we may not have a great back end of the rotation come April ‘09.
To be frank, I don’t like the Mets’ interest in Ibanez at all, but I’d live if they signed him. Same goes for K-rod or Fuentes. My biggest concern is using trade pieces like Kunz and Heilman wisely. The SP market is absolutely insane, and if the Mets can nab Jackson or Sonnanstine they are in pretty good shape.
How do you not like their approach? Free agency just began, and they haven’t even made a move yet. What’s to dislike?
Also, I don’t know about you guys, but if he came cheap i’d take pedro on a 1 year deal to work in the bullpen.
It takes him at least one inning for him to get going. Which he can’t afford coming out of the bullpen
well pedro is thinking of going 5 or 6 or even 7 innings when he starts when he is using all of his stuff into an inning or two then i think he can possibly be good but i doubt it will happen
on another note: sportscenter just said that mike mussina is gonna retire
another day and nothing has happen. omar do something!!!
Easy buddy. Nobody has done anything! Has Omar missed out on anything? Let the man do his job. He will come through with K ROD, an 8th inning man with closer experience and a starter. I also would love to see a deal that would bring back Jermaine Dye. I feel he is the perfect one year bat between the carlos’.
Who remembers when he took his time schlepping around looking for SP before 2007, something he identified as his top need, and ended up with Chan Ho Park?
Or when he waited for that bum Santana.
you can be upset about the moves he made, but to be upset that he HASN’T made a move yet is just ignorant, its soooo early, RELAX!
Outside the box; Randy J as closer?
Too fragile?
Too proud?
Hope our 2nd baseman, firstbaseman, left fielder and RBI hammer is OK!
Mamma mia, is it April yet!
Hes going for his 300th win. he’s not going to move to the bullpen
haven’t had time to be around a lot this off season..I really dig the daily recaps too. Thanks!
The Mets need to pick up John Garland, solid number 4-5 starter, can give them innnings.
They should try and make a trade with Houston (ala Lidge deal) to get Valverde and Wigginton and give away Delgado/Evans/maybe Niese? and move Ty to first. Saves money and yrs from K-Rod who isn’t a sure thing.
Forget Pedro. Those advocating him to be a reliever, did you see his first inning or two of work each start? Also, as a starter that means they are in the pen by the 6th inning at best every 5th day. Either way he’ll wind up back on the DL.
Reyes
Murphy
Wright
Beltran
Wigginton

Let Ollie walk and save the money

That rotation stinks. Pelfrey and Maine have yet to throw a full quality season, Garland is mediocre at best, and Niese isn’t ready.
Too many of you Met fans think you need a dream team to win. Garland will get you innings and lots of wins in the NL. Maine should be back to normal and will equate to more W’s than 08′ and everyone’s W’s should go up with a better bullpen. Maybe it’s Niese, maybe someone we don’t know (scrap heap) but we don’t need anything fancy.
Correct me if i’m wrong but the Phils just won with the likes of Blanton, Eaton and Kendrick at the back of the rotation. You just need to get there and then you can forget about those extra not so good starters.
btw, Garland is 60-38 the past 4 years. I know the ERA isn’t great, but how many other 29 yr olds with a WS title, AL experience are available? The guy is 6-6 and gives 200 innings every year.
Garland is a fine addition IF you bring in a better starter to go with him. There are too many questions with Maine and Niese clearly is not ready.
If you bring in Vasquez in a trade then you can look at guys like Garland, Pedro, Johnson, Wolf….
Vazquez would be a great addition.
I will say though that who knows if Neise is ready? The time he got in September could go a long way toward giving him a jump start for next year. not sure what he is doing in the off season, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he came to ST looking much more confident and ready to go.
Not guaranteeing it of course! Just saying that he has the stuff, and enough minor league innings, that he could end up in the rotation. Sure there will be some rookie bumps, but if you aren’t willing to put up with some of those, just trade every ML pitcher for old guys and never build a rotation.
Garland really isn’t good. I still think Heilmann could give the same basic production for 1/10th the cost. But, if they add him as the #5, not the worst thing in the world I guess.
worrying about Maine being ready for FT duty makes it more imprtant to hang onto guys like Neise to fill in, as opposed to signing more 10mill+ FAs.
That’s the reason I really want Randy Johnson for our #5. The guy can still pitch, he’s short term and it allows Niese to be the 1st sub. I just think it will be a disaster to have Niese have a Pelfrey type start and then Maine struggle to get past 5 innings. That would be a death blow to our rotation and our RP. We need to come out hot next season.
A rotation of
Johan, Pelfrey, Vasquez, Johnson, Maine
Gives us 4 guys that averaged over 6 innings per start. Last year we had….. 2.
that’s the rotation I want too. But, if Johnson doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t mind Wolf for the #5 spot, if it was just a couple year deal.
I am actually starting to lean toward teh grab sheets camp, if they can get him on a shorter term deal. Heck, 1 year/big $$ is OK, but anything up to 3, go for it.
Johan, Sheets, Pelfrey, Maine is pretty darned good.
Add Vazquez and it could be dominating, or still go with the Johnson/Wolf #5
Either way, that is a darned good # 5, and overall likely the best rotation in the league. Lots of Ks, and can hide the pen for the most part.
I too love the Sheets idea but then I have to have a reliable guy to add to the rotation. Not sure it could be Johnson then.
I am in favor of right now going to Sheets with a 2/32 deal with big incentives. If he takes it great, if not …….
If he does, and you can get Vazquez, it gives a dynamite rotation in ‘09, and carried over to 2010. Then you have 2 open spots (as-suming maine is still around, no idea when he goes FA!)
Keep Neise and Holt to fill in for the inevitable spot starts and DL trips, and september work, and they can become fixtures in 2011, if not sooner. Or by then, someone else could emerge from the system.
You could also utilize Niese or Holt for a year in the pen. Lord knows they always need help there!
Love the idea of Johnson as the #5 and Vasquez, or Sheets if he takes 2/32.
Keep it up TRS, Omar may be reading!!
Looks like LHRP are in high demand this offseason. Maybe if we sign Beimel then Show and Feliciano will actually have trade value.
Sign Beimel and Guardado and then trade those two for prospects to be used in other deals.
I also really think we need to trade the following players.
Heilman, Schnieder, Castro, Endy, Awful Reyes. I know all of these guys are not terrible nor would they net much if anything. But it would be a way to rebuild those middle level prospects that seem to go in every deal.
Schnieder and Castro are not horrible but they are FA after this season and I don’t want to resign either one. Trade them and bring in Molina. If you are only going to get one year might as well bring in someone to help the lineup.
Endy has a soft spot because of the catch but really he is just not that effective the way he was used last season. Even with all the injuries he still did not play that much. I would rather give the spot to Pagan and lose some defense. Besides, I am willing to bet that there are teams that he could start for that would give us a decent prospect. Awful Reyes might interest a AL club that can afford to carry a Miguel Ciro type player.
I agree with all of your removal guys. In addition of course is Schoe and Feliciano.
I will add easley, anderson, and how could you forget Castillo!
For C, Molina backed up by a young guy (if we have/can find one) that can take over in 2010 would be ideal. If not, keep Schneider as the BU.
I am fine with Easley returning. Good leader, decent hitter can play mulitiple positions. Castillo of course, but that one is hard to do. I want to bring in Grudzy either way. If Castillo stays then they platoon. Anderson is a nonfactor, I just see them buying him out, he has no trade value.
I don’t want to keep Schnieder because I think he would have some trade value. However, we can replace his offense with Robinson Cancel for that matter. He’s a #8 hitter, I am not too worried about offense. Get prospects and shave that 5 million in salary. If we can get Molina, great. If not, why not look for that young catcher now and take our lumps?
but weren’t Beimel’s numbers (other than ERA) pretty dismal? On paper, he looks kind of like Schoe!
But if he really can handle pitching to both sides of the plate, get him. Schoe and Feliciano IMO need to go. Especially pedro, who has stunk for the last 1.5 years. Schoe just gets all the heat (although he does stink too).
steady eddie would be an interesting pick up.
New closer – FA
Beimel L
Guardardo L
Stokes – long
Parnell – set up
Smith – roogy/flex
1 more guy – Sanchez/Kunz/cordero/etc – should be a power arm that can pitch 7/8/9 as a set up guy.
Not too bad. 1 type A (Krod?), a couple of B’s or below, and reutilizing guys they already have into what looks like a pretty strong (potentially) pen. And it costs no prospects.
Krod
Bemiel
Smith
Stokes
Eddie
Parnell
Betancourt (I really think we should take a chance on him. Cleveland would dump him for salary. He had a terrible year last year but look at his previous year.)
I can live with that.
The real difference between Beimel and Schoe are the splits:
Schoe BAA:
vs Righties: .333
vs Lefties: .178
Beimel BAA:
vs Righties: .263
vs Lefties: .278
Overall Beimal has a higher WHIP and a higher total BAA, but his splits are a lot more palatable. Either way, Schoe is a bum and I’d love to see him gone.
The reason why Schoe gets more heat than Feliciano is because when Feliciano comes into a tight spot against a lefty, he usually gets the job done. Schoe comes into a tight spot and throws gasoline on the fire. When Schoe starts an inning in a low pressure situation, then he’s lights out.
I have not checked the stats, but I would guess that Schoe also has incredibly bad stats with inherited runners….he is horrid, and is my personal Slappy. I think Schoe in reality is worse than his stats show. Please, oh please, let him be gone.
guys, just read an article that heilman wants to start or be traded. what should we do? start him or trade him? it will s3cks if we have a good 5 starter and trade him.
one or the other. going back to the pen isn’t an option most people will go for!
I say look to trade if you can get value. If not, hang onto him until the spring.
If the rotation is fully stocked (that is, no competition for the 5 hole) then wait for teams to have injuries and trade him then.
If they do have a need for a #5, give him a real shot at it.
Just doesn’t make sense to give him away for nothing now (not that I think they have to).
I would rather see him get a shot as the #5 instead of going 4/48 on a stiff like Garland.
I would look for a good deal now that can help the team. If not, then I would let him try out for the #5 starter during ST. If he does really well then you can revist the trade market or even keep him for that position depending on who the other candidates are. I am willing to bet that out of the gates he would do better than our other current options for #5.
Why would anyone listen to anything Aaron Heilman or his agent have to say. As far as I know, he is not eligible to be a free agent until after the 2010 season.
Any “Demand” he or his agent makes for a trade only undermines the Mets chances of trading him because teams now know that he wants out.
Also, after the season he just had he should shut his mouth knowing he is likely going to be traded anyway.
After these comments the Mets should let him rot away in Buffalo on the 40 man roster for the next 2 years, screw Aaron Heilman
Speaking of time to go get someone. Go get Jose Morales. Yes Jose. He is a 25 year old catcher in the Twins organization. The kid can hit but he is blocked by some guy named J. Mauer. I am sure there are other guys out there like this. I just don’t understand why we are wasting that position on 2 guys that are not part of our 2010 plan but offer really nothing to 2009 either.
exactly what I want to see. Unless they really think one of the system guys will be ready, try to get soemone like this.
Keep one of the vets if needed to split time.
note of course I have no idea who Morales is, but I like the concept!
go to baseball reference.com and look at his minor league numbers. The guy can hit for sure. In 2007 he had a .311 BA in AAA and last year he had a .315 BA. He has very little power but does not really SO much either.
