News: Daniel Murphy has Hamstring Strain
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 20, 2008 2:44 pm

Daniel Murphy had an MRI today that revealed a Grade 2 strain of his right hamstring, according to a team press release.

Murphy felt discomfort in his leg during batting practice in the Arizona Fall League on Nov. 11.

According to the team, Murphy will skip winter league ball in Puerto Rico so that he can be ready for Spring Training.

…yesterday, a league source told me it was a ‘knee sprain,’ which of course they had no way of knowing since murphy did not yet have the leg examined…i am not sure if a hamstring is better news, but at least he’ll have plenty of time to rest up

best time for it. Rest is the best rehab anyway, so call it a successful year, and look to come back 100% in ST.

It does set him back a little establishing a postion, but if he hits, to heck with it. Get him the right glove when he gets to PSL.

Hey, maybe this will help lower the odds he gets traded? One can only hope.

    • starz31 says:

he wasn’t getting traded…unless it was for offense, and I don’t see those options out there.

  2. stickguy says:

oh, and a hammy strain has to be better than a tron ACl!

  3. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

definitely rather a hammy strain (which is better than a tear), than a sprained knee which could lead to a serious ligament injury. Hopefully he will rest up and be ready to go for ST. If this kid keeps hitting and is remotely competent at 2nd base I dont want to see luis castillo ever again.

    • Meddler says:

Yeah but if this injury has any impact it will be that it reduces Murphy’s chances of playing 2B. The truth is though, we really won’t know the Mets intentions with Murphy until ST.

      • Hubie says:

There was only a slim chance of Murphy ever opening the season as our 2B and the injury has reduced that to none. Met fans need to get over the idea of Murph at 2B. It ain’t happening.

      On the Phillies/Braves/Nats/Marlins!

    • I don’t want to see Luis Castillo ever again anyway

  4. starz31 says:

Def better…and they sometimes the pain can be connected. weak hammys can effect your knees and vice-versa.

  5. ravi3 says:

That was a wonderful year, Mr.Murphy. You have proved that you belong on a major league roster. Go get better, and we’ll see ya in PSL!

    • fongulalou says:

      Stole my words.

      • think omar will protect him in the rule 5 draft?

        • starz31 says:

dont think he has to. not sure though.

        • well, a-ssuming he did, do you think he would? i mean, he let jesus flores get away. he also traded brian banister the savior, heath bell, matt lindstrom the best reliever on odd numbered days with the most saves on even numbered days, and henry owens. those guys were great with the mets. just wondering.

        • mark4212 says:

I sense a little sarcasm here.

Though i know what your getting at wouldn’t you have rather still had Heath bell, Lindstrom, Bannister, Henry Owens, then what we got for them.

A DD who killed a lady, Ben Johnson who isn’t with the team, Adam Bostick who never made it out of AAA. If Claudio Vargas turns out to be decent it’s all worth it though.

        • Tidewater says:

If he played for the Mets, he’s already on the 40 man.

  6. casey s. says:

Considering Murphy’s not a speedster, the hammy is much better. He has four months to get it rest.

  7. Markiss87 says:

Good that it isnt any torn acl..no surgery require were good,

  8. Nobody is more upset than Nick Evans. He thought he was goign to have his buddy with him. Sorry Nick.

  9. Steviefan84 says:

Get well soon Murphy, see ya in Spring Training!

  10. BullpenHelp says:

This effectively ends any chance of Murphy starting at 2nd for us next season. You don’t just start playing a position in the majors. He really needed a full off-season of work at the position.

So, absent some other kind of upgrade, get ready for Luis Castillo in the 8 hole next year. Money is better spent upgrading pitching!

  11. nyj0126 says:

The idea of the winter is to get better. Keep playing. If you’re healthy. Shutting him down is the smart thing here. They probably should have done it earlier. They’ve seen enough of him at 2B to get an idea of where he’ll be. And I’m sure they’re still undecided and it’s contigent upon other transactions, but it doesn’t look likely.
