News: Ultey to have Hip Surgery

by Matthew Cerrone

The Phillies have announced that Chase Utley will have hip surgery next week.

The recovery time is an estimated four to six months.

by my math, figuring time for rehab, etc., this could mean he misses the first month or so of the regular season

four to six months, i’m guessing?

bkfitz November 20, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Let me play a song on the world’s smallest violin.

areyoukidding November 20, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Um, Phillies press release says 4-6 MONTHS for recovery.

This just made the offseason free agent market a whole lot more interesting.

BullpenHelp November 20, 2008 at 1:04 pm

Apparently Pedro Feliz requires back surgery as well.

Maybe some of our injured guys should consult with them about playing through injuries.

starz31 November 20, 2008 at 1:05 pm

thats not a bad idea considering our guys keep getting re-injured in rehab starts…

helicopter ben johnson November 20, 2008 at 1:06 pm

thaats a shame.

zen November 20, 2008 at 1:08 pm

wish utley well.

It’s the end of an era, as George Steinbrenner today transferred control of the Yankees to his son, Hal. –newsday

starz31 November 20, 2008 at 1:13 pm

seems he pas-sed it off to the more intelligent son.

alex242 November 20, 2008 at 1:27 pm

lol very smart move by george…

My Favorite Baseball Squadron November 20, 2008 at 1:08 pm

That might explain why his pre/post all star splits were as distorted as they were. I remember reading a lot of Phillies fans thinking he was hurt when they were in the mid-summer swoon.

I have nothing against Utley, I find it funny how he keeps cursing on TV.

BullpenHelp November 20, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Yeah, the hip injury was being reported in August, I belive. Utley constantly maintained he was healthy, but his splits told a different story.

1st half OPS 955 with 25 HR and 25 2B in 419 PA
2nd half OPS 855 with 8 HR and 16 2B in 288 PA

Chan Ho Parking Lot November 20, 2008 at 1:17 pm

Looks a lot like Wrights 06 splits. Maybe it was the home run derby :) ?

phillygalfan November 20, 2008 at 1:15 pm

I’d take him rolling around in a walker over Castillo, though gotta say. He was def. playing hurt over the 2nd half.

There's Always '09 November 20, 2008 at 2:22 pm

I think the Mets should sign CC to pitch and play second every other day.

Cliff Pink Floyd November 20, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Well They didnt have rollins for about a month in the beginning of last season and they still won the division. And Lidge was coming off a knee surgery. I’m not celebrating this time.

Chan Ho Parking Lot November 20, 2008 at 1:38 pm

It just goes to show how little Rollins actually meant to that lineup. Even when Rollins came back, he didn’t light the world on fire and it didn’t matter. Utley is a different story. He is hands down the best pure hitter on the team.

jamie November 20, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I agree…losing utley for a third of the season will be hard to overcome.

boozermetsfan November 20, 2008 at 1:23 pm

boo? FU!

JNGordon November 20, 2008 at 1:28 pm

As much as I don’t like trading within the division with our rivals, perhaps the Mets should consider trading Luis Castillo to the Phillies. This is in keeping with the 1969 Mets World Champions. It took a while (1962-1969) until there were enough bad ex-Mets sprinkled thoughout baseball to weaken the competituion to the point where the Mets could compete. Smirk

bkfitz November 20, 2008 at 1:30 pm

The Phillies aren’t going to do us a favor and take our junk off our hands.

JNGordon November 20, 2008 at 1:37 pm

It was a joke

jamie November 20, 2008 at 2:12 pm

smirk indeed

loqiel November 20, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Phillies will probably either re-sign Tad Iguchi or bring up Jason Donald for this.

DWrightUnclutch November 20, 2008 at 1:35 pm

Even missing Utley, they’re still plenty better than the Mets

atlantasnumber1metsfan November 20, 2008 at 1:38 pm

It’s funny how you’re still trolling around here…I’d like to think you have better things to do with your time..then again..you’re from Philly, so you’re probably jobless and about to get your internet and lights shut off.

atlantasnumber1metsfan November 20, 2008 at 1:39 pm

secondly, Utley is as good as he was this season..this injury is just an excuse…

loqiel November 20, 2008 at 1:49 pm

That’s one heck of an excuse, that takes six months to rehab. All through the season, he’s constantly been asked about his hip and he’s constantly said it’s okay, even despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Over at the 700 level we were taking bets during the season when in the off-season it would be revealed that he needed surgery, so this is nothing new for us, it’s just the first time it’s been publicly admitted by him and the Phillies.

There's Always '09 November 20, 2008 at 2:30 pm

That’s because he is a trooper. I like Utley. Have no problem with him, Howard, or Hamels. It’s really the fans, Jayson Werth (who really isn’t that good), Pat Burrell, Brad Lidge, Victorino, Carlos Ruiz, Chris Coste (running his mouth…obviously he forgot one thing- he’s Chris Coste!), Jimmy Rollins (he doesn’t even bother me that much…just has fun with the rivalry), Brett Myers, J.C. Romero, and that manager of yours who claims to be holier than thou. “We Phillies would never throw at a batter like Manny Ramirez. That was garbage though, how Kuroda threw at Victorino. No place in the game for that.”

Congrats on the World Series. See you next year, seeing as how your football season is over.

DWrightUnclutch November 20, 2008 at 1:43 pm

I’m here in the sewer that is NYC. Please don’t act like this city or the people is any great shakes either.

But facts are facts….the Mets have a long way to go just to get even

HitTheSinkerBall November 20, 2008 at 2:11 pm

How are the Eagles doing these days?

There's Always '09 November 20, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Yea, that’s a good question DWrightUnclutch. Kiss your sister lately? :-)

Best part about that is that all the philly a-holes wasted 4 hours of their day:
1) watching their pathetic team
2) watching an nfl game end in a tie
3) watching their team’s season effectively end

But look on the bright side, at least your QB learned a new rule.

anditsouttahere November 20, 2008 at 2:27 pm

your in the sewers? why? there are other places to keep warm.

bucknersankles November 20, 2008 at 2:48 pm

10,000 LOSES, 10,000 LOSES, 10,000 LOSES, 10,000 LOSES, 2 WORLD SERIES, 2 WORLD SERIES, 2 WORLD SERIES .

MOST LOSES IN SPORT HISTORY, THEIR LEGACY FOREVER CEMENTED IN THE ANNALS OF SPORT.

DWRIGHT,

DO US ALL A FAVOR AND CRAWL AS FAST AS YOU CAN BACK UNDER THE ROCK YOU CAME OUT FROM.

phillygalfan November 20, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Or 2nd most losses for a team with the 2nd highest payroll… I normally don’t engage in the name calling, but seriously, NO room for bragging right now… lol.

There's Always '09 November 20, 2008 at 3:03 pm

He started it!

phillygalfan November 20, 2008 at 3:19 pm

I know, and I definitely don’t condone. If phillies fans are going to troll, they should do it elsewhere! Just constructive criticism.

DWrightUnclutch November 20, 2008 at 3:21 pm

I love the fact that on METSblog, the best you can do is to…….rag on the Eagles.

Son, that says light years more about you and the Mets than it does the Eagles at any rate.

I don’t care about the Eagles.

Now what do you say as a comeback? You gonna go to the 76ers next?

There's Always '09 November 20, 2008 at 3:49 pm

well, at least part of the point is, when you win a title, you should celebrate with your own kind (for those of you from philly, that would include degenerate drunks of all ages). but i can see why you wouldn’t wnat to do that.

next time you wina title (i may be wasting my time here because it won’t happen), try not to flip over cars, light fires, or riot. it’s much more fun.

bucknersankles November 20, 2008 at 4:05 pm

DON’T THE PHILLIE’S HAVE A BLOG THAT THIS POOR DELUDED INDIVIDUAL CAN GO TO ?

racemccloud November 20, 2008 at 1:44 pm

You are a zero.

blains2008 November 20, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Ask Delgado. It’s going to take longer than that.

miker94 November 20, 2008 at 1:56 pm

waaaaaaaagh! my hip hurts, waaaaaaaaagh!

bucknersankles November 20, 2008 at 3:57 pm

LOL, FUNNY STUFF.

HitTheSinkerBall November 20, 2008 at 2:17 pm

lol long way to go to get better and to get even with the Phillies?. Oh yes because the Phillies have blown us out of the water the last two years. I will give the Phillies credit they won it all something that is not easy to do. But don’t make it sound like they are light years in front of the Mets.

Hit The Weights Zeile November 20, 2008 at 2:23 pm

their lineup is better, their bullpen is better, their bench is better, their SPs aren’t as good as ours but even that is close. Obviously the Mets can fix that, but until they do we are the inferior team overall.

HitTheSinkerBall November 20, 2008 at 2:39 pm

If you read what I said I never said the Phillies were not better then the Mets. I said the Mets are not as far behind as Phillies fans think. A bullpen out here and there or a getting in a run with a runner on third and no one out and it’s the Mets who win the east. Phillies are better but the Mets are not far behind.

metsftw November 20, 2008 at 3:18 pm

their lineup is better? then how did we score more runs than they did this year…?

losmets57 November 20, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Excellent!

DWrightUnclutch November 20, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Dear Mets fans:

When someone criticizes the Mets, it is silly to retort about how bad the football team is.

Thank you.

Get some imagination next time

There's Always '09 November 20, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Haha…so, you have exposed yourself for not being a Mets fan as you have claimed in the past. Maybe if you had a little originality, you would have been able to disguise the fact a little more. But you’re a Philly fan/from Philly. So, odds are you’re a dou-chebag.

DWrightUnclutch November 20, 2008 at 5:16 pm

I love your insults.

“Your football team stinks!”

“You’re from Philly!”

OOooooooh.

First of all, I don’t care about football
Second, I’m not from Philly
3rd I’m actually a very harsh Mets fan

I really don’t care if you believe or not.

But your comebacks are sad dude.

“My baseball team sux but it is ok because your football team sux”

WOW

Mets fans have the team they deserve

There's Always '09 November 20, 2008 at 10:56 pm

You’re right. But I can’t talk baseball with you because you won the title. But that’s in the past. I’m not talking about the Super Bowl Champion Giants. I’m talking about the last place Eagles. I really don’t care about the Giants’ 9-1 record. Nope. Like a Phillies fan, I’m too consumed with my rival that I can’t enjoy the champagne. I hope Jimmy and Chase enjoyed it, because now they’ll see what it’s like to be the hunted.

jamie November 20, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Dear Phillies Fans:

When your team has won the World Series, and you troll over to other teams’ blogs to gloat and be a d!ck, you look like an insecure little toad.

Thank you.

Get a life next time.

fyffem November 20, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I’m hoping that maybe you’ll die tonight. Why don’t you do the world a favor and off yourself.

DWrightUnclutch November 20, 2008 at 5:18 pm

Don’t worry, I’ll live just to spite people like you.

And I’ll be here to b*tch this team out again after a 4th choke in a row while you homers keep going “but we beat the Phils in the regular season we’re better!” and “D Wright won a gold glove that’s much more important than winning a ring!”

bucknersankles November 20, 2008 at 4:12 pm

HIS LIFE CONSIST’S OF WATCHING THE MOVIE ” INVINCIBLE ”
OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

fyffem November 20, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Good…I hope he need hip replacement!

DaN22CaP November 20, 2008 at 6:32 pm
