Outfielder: Royals looking to trade Guillen

by Matthew Cerrone on November 22nd, 2008 at 8:58 am

According to Jon Heyman at SI.com, the Royals are quietly shopping righthanded-hitting outfielder Jose Guillen.

In an October report for the New York Post, Joel Sherman wrote that the Mets will probably have to ‘take on another headache,’ if they want to trade Luis Castillo to another team.

According to Sherman, citing an executive familiar with the talks, “The Mets and Royals had discussions in July about swapping Guillen for Castillo.”

Guillen will earn $24 million for the next two seasons, while Castillo is due to make $18 million for the next three.

By the way, also on his blog, Heyman writes about the state of Citigroup and the Mets, Garret Anderson’s new agent, whether the Mets will trade for a closer, and the battle for Derek Lowe, among other things.

Starting Pitcher: Mets interest in Padilla, Millwood

by Matthew Cerrone on November 22nd, 2008 at 8:54 am

“The Braves, Dodgers and Mets are believed to be among teams that have inquired about Rangers starting pitchers Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla,” reports Jon Heyman at SI.com.

In May, Peter Gammons wrote at ESPN.com that the Rangers wanted Aaron Heilman, Mike Pelfrey and Deolis Guerra in a deal last off-season for Padilla, who will $12 million this season, after which he will likely be a free agent.

Millwood will earn $11 million in 2009, and $12 million in 2010, after which he will be a free agent.

Millwood had a 5.07 ERA in 2008 for the Rangers, a 5.16 ERA in 2007 and a 4.52 ERA in 2006.

The first comment from a reader to Heyman’s post says it all:

“I find it somewhat laughable that these teams are pursuing two of the pitchers the Phillies shed in the last 5 years in building their World Series team.”

Heyman also says, “The Mets are believed to have inquired about Derek Lowe, Randy Wolf and Jon Garland.”

The Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, Phillies, Giants, Mariners and Dodgers have all shown interest in Lowe as well.
