2B: Furcal eyes A’s, Renteria signs with Giants
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 24, 2008 4:36 pm

According to Enrique Rojas from ESPN.com, free-agent SS Rafael Furcal traveled to the West Coast, ‘where he could complete an agreement with either the A’s or Giants.’

Furcal’s agent told Rojas that a third team is in the mix, but it is not the Mets, despite what his client told El Caribe.

Regardless, Furcal does not want to play second base, Furcal’s agent told Tim Brown at Yahoo! Sports.

That said, the Giants have signed free-agent SS Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18 million deal, says Sweeny Murti of WFAN, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

…so, if the Giants signed renteria, then i’m guessing the A’s will end up with furcal

Update5:20 pm

MLB Trade Rumors now links to a story from the San Francisco Chronicle that states Renteria has not signed with the Giants.

jeez…at this rate, i’m starting to think a more appropriate name would be the Not Stove Season…

  1. NYMETSFAN718 says:

    Giants signed renteria.

  2. vic79 says:

Meh I have fine with him going to the A’s, Renteria just went to SF

I rather have Hudson and deal Castillo

Thing is after that they may as well just stick with Castillo and sign Eckstein cause I don’t think Grudzielanek is that much better

  3. mdemaio says:

It won’t be the Giants – they just signed Renteria…

  4. phukthephills says:

13 DAYS 07 HRS 20 MIN until the winter meetings

  5. Razor Shines says:

“The offer from the Athletics and the New York Mets looks tempting”

That is a quote from Furcal. I hope that he did not think the Giants still play in NY and get confused.

  6. oleosmirf says:

the Mets need top notch SP, so pay what they have to for Lowe in dollars not years and sign K-Rod (he’s getting more than 3 years)

next sign Penny as the 4th starter and that gives the Mets the best rotation in baseball.

trade Heilman, Evans and Muniz or someone like that and get Street.

sign a gamer like Eckstein, Grudzielanek, Loretta to split time with Castillo as we’re not gonna be able to move him.

sign Daryle Ward as a pinch hitter to replace Marlon Anderson.

    • rustyjr says:

can we please stop with our trade talk oleo no offense but just because we suggest the trades – it doesn’t mean they are realistic what makes us think that a package of heilman evans and muniz ( dead wood) will land a street and what makes us think that eckstein grudzy or loretta would even consider platooning with slappy?? sorry just needed to vent cuz we think we can trade most of our scrubs for decent to top notch players – then we are deluded

      • oleosmirf says:

yea that is a pretty weak offer for Street, replace Muniz with Kunz and that is something to build on but for the veteran 2B, Loretta and Gurdzielanek are in search of a WS and both had under 300 AB on bad teams. Why wouldnt they take 300 AB for the mets, whom have a much better chance of making it to the WS then any other team in the NL except the Phillies and the Cubs.

Also eckstein really doesnt bring much to the table other than his intangiables but the Mets need those more than anything else really (besides pitching).

    • how is Lowe, a 36 year old a top notch SP? The guy is decent and had a career year, but hes not as good for the money he wants. you want the guy till he’s 40+?…. no more oldies unless there going to be used in the 5th spot. I’d much rather attempt to get Sonnastine or Jackson from the Rays, I would trade Church for one of them. I like Church, but an average Corner Outfileder can be much more easily replaced then a young proven Starter.

      • MudvilleNine says:

Thats why we’re having such a tough time getting a left-fielder and if you think he’s average you should turn in your scouting card.

        • Angryredmenace says:

If you think he’s better then average, you should cut out your eyes and donated them to a blind retard.Surely the retard would at least try to used them. Church is a career 272. hitter, with a career high of 15 homeruns and 70 RBIs.Besides a half of a season of greatest last year, what exactly has he done to be consider anything but average?

        • MudvilleNine says:

Another one. Lets see a career average based on 5 partial seasons. Thats partial. Seems to me and lots of others that he was showing signs of having a breakout year at the age of 30. Thats just with the bat. He is a well above average rightfielder, with good speed and an above average arm. But no, you’re with the other guys who think good outfielders grow on trees. Guess what, he’s better then what we have and whats out there right now. This team cant even find a left fielder and some are hoping that a couple of infielders can handle it again, of course with the help of a one dimensional outfielder (taking up space on the roster) to come out and play defense for an inning or two at the end of a game. But you’re right, lets get rid of our semi-young rightfielder for another pitching project and bring in the usual over-the-hill, injury plagued, defensively challenged outfielder that you all must seem to love.

        • Angryredmenace says:

Partial seasons? In 2007 he play 144 games with 470 ab and hit 272. He also set his career high in homers with 15 and career high in rbis with 70.That’s a full season, not a partial one.And in that season he was average, below average by some standards.Having a break out half a year at 30 does absolutely nothing to show me he’s more then a average player he has shown us to be over his career.Having some speed and above average arm doesn’t make you an above average player.Playing good defense is a plus, but it doesn’t negate the fact that he’s not a great hitter.Saying he’s better than what the Mets have is true, but saying he’s better then what’s out there is your opinion alone.I’m sure the Mets could find an outfielder in the same vein or better than Church, if The Mets had to trade him for a pitcher of note.No way a semi-young,lol, average corner outfielder should get in the way of bringing in some much needed pitching.

  7. BullpenHelp says:

I loved the guy in the last thread who was signing Manny and Furcal. Perhaps everyone forgot why this team missed the playoffs the last two years.

    PITCHING.

    Fix the Bullpen.

    • Elvis says:

mets definitely need pitching in 2009 … but second tier FA pitching they are looking at is fair to middling only … and price is thru roof in bucks and years.

next year delgado and wagner are big numbers off payroll … after that, there is no relief for a while, with wright and reyes getting bumps, beltran and johan in mid deal … limited relief to fix future problems … if we tie up a couple of pitching mediocrities to long term we will have nowhere to go…

Forget these bandaids like Lowe, etc. Get the best player to fit our long term needs, which is texeira, overpay him, 22M per times 8 … maybe pitching holes next year, but long term is the idea … let’s build a dynasty

      • HereWeegoAgain says:

        Absolutely. Sign Krod, Tex.

Try to use Delgado and mid chips to find some bullpen relief.

Resign Ollie if possible, maybe a deal for Vasquez.

Deal with Slappy, Schnieder and Murph/Tatis for now.
Address 2B/LF/C/SP next off season or at the deadline.

This lineup will be potent enough and Tex is a vaccum at 1B.

Point is…..add chips that will solidify this team for years to come, not stop gap mid level players who will be grossly overpaid. Build a dynasty one or two pieces at a time.

  8. phukthephills says:

    reyes
    hudson
    beltran
    delgado

  9. GravediggerHebner says:

    “Not” Stove, nice.

I think it will turn into “Hot” Stove after December 1, which is the arbitration offer deadline date. If the action doesn’t start picking up shortly after that at the winter meetings, that’s when I’ll start growing impatient.

  10. gipper82475 says:

Personally, I’ve been impatient since Beltran was caught looking in 2006. Or, has it been since Hershiser dominated us in 1988?

    • kingman 26 says:

LOL! How about since Pendleton’s homer off McDowell in 1987!!

      • GravediggerHebner says:

kingman, you and the gipper opened a long closed door to a bad place in my memory banks. Thank you?

        • gipper82475 says:

Sorry, man. But perhaps it is only through facing our demons that we can exorcise them?

        • kingman 26 says:

Sorry there Hebner….I was trying to lighten Gipper’s painful memory, but I guess in retrospect I may have failed….

In 2009, if we fix the bullpen, 2006, and 1988 and 1987, and even Kenny Rogers’ pitch to Andruw and the Subway Horror Series shall be publicly exorcised in a big way, as the Gipper is right—for when we first boldly face our ugliest demons, we have taken step one in exorcising them…and of course 50-60 mil or so Wilpon dollars won’t hurt either.

        • GravediggerHebner says:

You’re right, I needed some cold water in my face to bring me back to this awful place. Forget history, doomed to repeat it.

  11. oc410 says:

if omar is going to get bullied out of the bidding for the big arms by the big bad yankees and red sox then why doesnt he make a move already with some lesser starters to prepare for the worst. If the white sox are giving away Javier Vasquez, then take him. Why not, hes the fifth starter. I keep hearing this Dontrelle Willis to Red Sox for Julio lugo swap of bad contracts. Can Luis Castillo get in on that action? Omar has been silent, but there are moves to be made, and moves that can be made. I dont know what he is waiting for

  12. Hernandez_1B says:

Completely off topic: Has anyone heard anything on the partial season ticket plans they are gonna offer partial season ticket plan holders? The letter I received said they would let us know in November and considering November is almost over, I’m kind of curious

  13. scottmetsfan says:

also a bit off topic, but did anyone else hear chad cordero on xm radio today? he said he would LOVE to play for the mets since he and omar have such a deep history together and how grateful he is to omar for his support early in his career. i love hearing from guys who really want to play for the mets. not that it makes much difference in how much money they would accept or how good they are or aren’t. it’s just that it’s nice hearing some good things about the mets on the radio instead of all the disrespect we normally hear.

  14. oleosmirf says:

someone asked why Derek Lowe is a top notch SP?

    have you watched him pitch???
He’s a ground ball machine, pitches deep into games, doesn’t walk many batters, and most importantly he KNOWS HOW TO WIN THE BIG GAME.

Hey Matt heres a good poll for ya

if it was game 162 and we needed a win to save the season and Santana and Pelfrey were not an option which realistic SP would you want on the mound

    Perez
    Lowe
    Vasquez
    Garland
    Niese

If you don’t choose Lowe or Ollie can someone please explain why?

    • Thats a pointless poll, i’d pick Lowe, but mainly because hes the only one on the list thats not a #4 or #5 starter and Niese is a rookie.
But i would still pick Perez over Lowe.
And if you actually read my post, im not saying he’s not good, but for the money he wants, he is not worth it, having Lowe for 4-5 years would be disasterous.

      • oleosmirf says:

well would you rather have 3 years of a great #2 SP and maybe 1 year of average or 3 years of Garland or Vasquez

  15. The Slider says:

Ya know, I love the hot stove season, but this is freakin’ ridiculous. Names are being tossed all around at a mind-numbing rate. Fellas, we can possibly surmise our interest in a couple of players, but beyond that, it’s anybody guess what will happen. Add to that, that player want to “use” us in order to create a false market for that player.

I admit it, I’m completely frustrated that I have no clue what the Mets are going to do because it appears that we can go in any one, two or three of a hundred different directions.

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

    • The Slider says:

… somebody should do a youtube video which included all of the Mets’ hot stove names to the backup track of the Billy Joel song “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”

Matt- you should start a contest for best song. Two tickets to Opening Day at Citi Field.

  16. mistermet says:

I guess there are discrepancies as to whether the Furcal thing is true, but if true, it’s pretty disappointing/ridiculous that the Mets perhaps did not make as strong a bid as the money starved A’s. I guess the economy is really having a big effect on Freddie…Maybe we should set up a fund for him where we can all donate money. I guess I’d be in for $10 or $20…anyone else?

    • Meddler says:

I don’t usually like to speculate on these things, but considering the source, how’s this: Furcal has some interest in playing for the Mets:

      A. Because they may have made a significant offer.

      B. The idea of role modeling for Jose Reyes is probably somewhat appealing. Very similar types of players, it would be a great way for Furcal to fade into the twilight of his career.

However, his agent may not want to open the 2B door to every team, at least not without having more serious discussions about it with his client, so he may want to quash the rumors for now.

      • The Slider says:

You think that one of the things that’s attracting Furcal to NY is mentoring Reyes? Please. There are only two, maybe three, things that concern Furcal:

        1. money;

        2. competing for a WS ring; and

        3. playing shortstop.

(if you want to include a fourth, you could add “money” again.)

  17. mistermet says:

I guess we can’t compete financially with the Braves either. This is a joke. Only small market teams would need to dump a bad contract (Castillo) before signing someone else to play the position. The Yankees for Red Sox would just sign a suitable replacement, and then worry about trading off the bad contract afterwards- otherwise you might wait and wait and lose out on players like Hudson, Furcal. But as we know, Freddie’s pocketbook comes first and foremost. It’s a shame Nelson Doubleday was bought out- the wrong owner remained.

    • Sylar says:

Yeah, Freddie’s pocketbook only allowed the largest contract EVER for a pitcher last offseason….

Get a clue you dimwit. Nobody’s been signed yet, and it would be re.tarded to give long term contracts to Hudson and Furcal, especially after the Castillo debacle.

      But seriously, GET A CLUE.

    • kingman 26 says:

We had the 2nd or 3rd highest payroll, depending on the source…we spent MORE than the Red Sox on 2008.

This is almost as sad as your post the other day comparing us to the DBacks, who spent less than HALF of what the Wilpons did on payroll in 2008. But never let facts get in the way of an inane argument.

Furcal is a 31-year old declining shortstop, coming off of a major injury, who would have to change positions to play here…and you want to OUTBID someone to give him a long-term deal for tens of millions?

Can you please read a few books to get a slight clue about baseball or baseball economics before posting again?

    • GravediggerHebner says:

This whole “small market Mets” perception is something I’m seeing alot recently in all the Met related blogs I read. It’s patently absurd.

According to Cot’s baseball contracts, the Mets 2008 payroll was 137.8 million dollars, second only to the Yankees 209.1 million dollars. If the Mets are “small market” so are 28 other teams. The Yankees were the only team that chose to pay the dollar for dollar luxury tax penalty imposed by major league baseball. I refuse to hold it against the Wilpons if they decide not to pay a dollar penalty per dollar spent over the threshold.

Yes, the Rays went to the World Series on a 43.7 million dollar payroll. Interestingly enough, the team that spent the third highest amount in baseball, 137.7 million dollars, were the 74 win last place Detroit Tigers.

  18. HereWeegoAgain says:

    Sign Krod, Tex.

Try to use Delgado and mid chips to find some bullpen relief.

Resign Ollie if possible, maybe a deal for Vasquez.

Deal with Slappy, Schnieder and Murph/Tatis for now.
Address 2B/LF/C/SP next off season or at the deadline.

This lineup will be potent enough and Tex is a vaccum at 1B (listening DW?).

Point is…..add chips that will solidify this team for years to come, not stop gap mid level players who will be grossly overpaid. Build a dynasty one or two pieces at a time.

  19. mistermet says:

    Freddie Coupons

    • GravediggerHebner says:

This falsely applied, never clever nickname does not grow more appropriate through repeated application, yet misinformed people keep trying, how charming.

The alledged Mr. Coupons signed paychecks for the 2nd highest paid team in major league baseball in 2008.

The Tiffany shopping Yankees spent 209 million dollars on a third place finish with pitchers like Darrell Rasner, Sidney Ponson, Kyle Farnsworth and Kei Igawa. In another aisle of Tiffany’s they purchased 600 total at bats for Jose Molina, Wilson Betemit and Brett Gardner. Money well spent, obviously.

  20. mistermet says:

Yankees are talking about Sabathia, Lowe, Burnett., Manny, Teixeira. We are talking about discount rack garbage like Garland, Wolf, Ivan Rodriguez, and an “economic”-friendly closer instead of K-Rod, perhaps. The Mets shop at the Mom and Pop store while the Yankees shop at Tiffany’s- some things never change….

    • Sylar says:

You’re incomprehensibly stupid… you really are.

What has all this spending gotten the Yankees the last 8 years??? NOTHING.

You know nothing about who the Mets are pursuing/not pursuing.

Did you forget about last year and Santana??? You probably did, you’re a moron.

Grow up, get a clue, and stop acting like a whiny pessimistic toolbag.

      • oleosmirf says:

its not how much you spend its what you spend it on.

turning down K-Rod and Lowe b/c of an extra year or 5 mil dollars would be just as ridiculous as overpaying for Hudson or Furcal.

This is a very deep year for FA, the mets could theoretically fill every need without making a single trade.

While its way too early for Omar to be making any big FA signings, and he will, this is defiantely not the year to sit back and save money (for the mets that is)

        • therealsince86 says:

While it is a deep FA the Mets, like all other teams but the Yankee’s, do have a budget. That money has to as you said be spent wisely.
Krod you over pay on if you have to because he’s young. We won’t have to because the market is limited.
Lowe you don’t over pay on. The guy is a good pitcher but he is older and has never been dominant. That’s a lot of money and years to spend on an old #2-3. With Lowe, if you could overpay for 2 years it makes sense but when you start talking 4 years 66 million thats insane for a guy that age and will be a disaster when we need to add more in 2 years.
I would much rather take a chance on Sheets and trade for Vasquez than to tie our hands with that contract. Sheets and Vasquez would both most likely be on 1-2 year deals.

        • stickguy says:

sheets and vazquez, if added, would already be a great off season for Omar, even if the only other thing he did was add a closer!

Of course he will (should? better?) also add a few more BP arms, but I expect that happens.

        • therealsince86 says:

I expect some of our bullpen moves to be think outside the box moves. Signing Eddie Guardado, trading for Betancourt. Those type of moves to make the pen deeper. As much as I would love
Krod, Putz, Cruz, Beimel, Street…. all at the same time, It’s not going to happen.
          I could see
Krod, Putz/Street, Guardado/Cordero, Stokes, Smith, Feliciano, Sanchez.

        • stickguy says:

agreed on the pen. Get the closer, and the other guys don’t have to be the “name” FAs.

Add parnell to that list. if he isn’t traded, I think he will get a long look as a power arm/set up/flex guy.

but Krod, Guardado, stokes/sanchez/parnell, smith, cordero + 2 others (at least 1 lefty, don’t want pedro F!) should get the job done.

More deep into the game efforts by the SPs will also help.

        • therealsince86 says:

Which is why I don’t want Pedro or Perez.

  21. therealsince86 says:

Should wait for Matt’s first post today but…
Trades that should happen for the Mets during the Winter Meetings.
Trade both Schnieder and Castro for prospects.
    Trade prospects for Molina
Trade for Vasquez. It will take some decent prospects. Maybe Heilman, Evans and Kunz?
Adding Molina and Vasquez answers two of our problems for next season. A quality starter that will pitch 200+ innings. A RH bat to bat lower in the order with pop.

    • stickguy says:

Like the concept, but not sure that Vazquez should (or would) cost that much, or if he is worth it. I would like to see him on the team though.

I could also live without both catchers. And since they are both (Molina too?) FAs after 2009, it doesn’t have implications to the future, since they need a new catcher in 2010 anyway.

But I agree that these 2 moves help the rotation 9still need that 5th starter though!) and molina improves the C position, and helps the line up.

Molina would be even more improtant if they are going into 2009 with Slappy as the starter, since it eliminates the other black hole at the bottom of the line up (and I only accept Slappy hitting 8th if he has to be on the field and team!)

to expand on the trades, at least one of the prospects should be a AAA catcher type (someone blocked maybe?) since it doesn’t seem like any of the Mets C prospects are likely to be ready. And whoever it is becomes the backup next year.

I like Wolf or johnson for the 5th starter (to get a lefty) and would love Sheets. That would be a great rotation 9when he was healthy!)

The cherry on top would be unloading Delgado and signing Teix. Really would help solidify the team for years to come.

Remember, C and 1B are open positions in 2010 (based on the current roster). If you can lock 1 or both down now for years to come, do it.

      • therealsince86 says:

You know my love for Tex and I don’t understand why we are not in it more. 8/160 for Tex is a great investment. It only adds 8 million more to payroll.
I don’t think we will get a blocked catcher prospect in return for our catchers. That would not make much sense. LOL.
I do think that Vasquez will cost some prospects. Evans I am not high on and obviously Heilman is not a big deal. Kunz is struggling. If we could get Vasquez and a back up catching prospect in that deal I would dance in the streets.
Speaking of Street, I would still look to see if he can be had in a trade as well.

        • stickguy says:

vazquez + a C would be nice. I didn’t really mean trade our C’s for another C, just that in the various deals going down, a C prospect would be nice to snag.

Feliciano and/or Schoe are getting traded too. And who knows who else! I expect at least Carp from the minors.

Teix while expensive (and of course overpriced, but aren’t they all?) would help in many ways. If nothing else, it removes a major hole to fill next off season, and makes the team better in 2009 (I don’t expect much out of Delgado, and while his overall numbers may be OK, he will be very streaky).

That, and you can move Delgado for some prospects, and will also free up some of the backlog of 1B prospects in the system to be used in other deals.

With Teix, I have no problem using Murphy/tatis/evans as the LF platoon. Solid production from the 6/7 hole.

        • therealsince86 says:

Exactly, if you could get a decent 2B or 5th starter for Delgado it’s a win win. You fill the 1B slot permantly and fill another spot. Thus any talk of Tex fills 2 spots not just one.

  22. Elastic says:

Tex and K-Rod would be my priorities.

  23. alex242 says:

    the real,

Amen to that, i’ve been lobbying for k-rod and tex since we missed the playoffs, i just plain and simple don’t like delgado in this team, him and pedro i want no part of anymore.. they’re view as the veterans but i feel their course has ru nwith this team, trade delgado get rid of castillo and sign k-rod and tex.. delgado might even bring a starting pitcher you never know, he’s a bargain for some teams at 12 millions, omar has a man crush for some players and delgado is one of them, i wanna see wright be the leader w/o someone else be the veteran leader, let him and jose run this team, i’m sure we’ll be fine wt manuel as coach.. please omar, stop being a moron and do what’s right for this team not what u think is right for your friends (i.e castillo, alou, pedro, duque)

    • therealsince86 says:

Exactly why not trade Delgado and 4 million (what we would have paid in the buyout anyway) for Sonnanstine? I really think the Rays would do it. Delgado would replace Floyd as their old DH and instantly they would be a better offensive team. All at the price of a strength in #4-5 starters.

      • therealsince86 says:

Not to mention lets say you do that deal. Tex cost 20 million, Sonnanstine 500,000. That’s 20.5 million for 2009. You don’t do that deal and keep Delgado and sign Garland then you end up with 22.5 million for next season and a hole at 1B in 2010.
