Buzz: The Mets, White Sox, Dye and Vazquez
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 25, 2008 1:32 pm

The White Sox are asking teams for a young starting pitcher, plus additional players, in a deal for OF Jermaine Dye, reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

According to Rosenthal, “The Mets, Rays and Phillies are among the teams balking at such a price.”

Dye can block trades to six clubs, most of which are in the northeast, says Rosenthal.

…from what i recall, dye was willing to approve a deal to the Red Sox once before, so i would not take this to mean he’s anti-northeast, so much as he wants a say regarding where he ends up playing

“On Tuesday, Nov. 11, several White Sox officials watched Bobby Parnell and Eddie Kunz pitch in the Arizona Fall League,’ wrote Mark Gonzales in the Chicago Tribune.

According to Gonzales, citing two NL scouts, the Sox were scouting players for deals that include Dye.

Speaking of the White Sox, “The Mets aren’t enamored with Javier Vazquez,” explains Rosenthal.

In a report from early November in the Chicago Tribune, Dave van Dyck wrote, ‘The Mets had interest in Vazquez,’ according to a well-placed source at the GM meetings.

Lastly, “The Braves, Dodgers and Mets are believed to be among teams that have inquired about Rangers starting pitchers Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla,” reported Jon Heyman at SI.com over the weekend.

However, according to Rosenthal, “The Mets and Braves are not currently interested in either pitcher.”

Rosenthal also reports on whether the Rockies will trade Huston Street; Atlanta’s quest for a starting pitcher, like A.J. Burnett; whether the Dodgers should sign Trevor Hoffman; and the logjam of corner-infielders in Boston.

OMG, can we post something in the mets blog when it ACTUALLY happens?

Lance McAlister of 1530 WCKY in Cincinnati has a rumor up regarding trade talks between the White Sox and Reds.

McAlister’s source says the White Sox initiated talks to send Jermaine Dye to the Reds for Homer Bailey and another player.

    millwood and padilla.

why doesn’t omar just punch me in the face?

  4. mark4212 says:

Lets see, if a Starting Pitcher is on the Trade market the mets are interested. if there is a Free agent Starting pitcher or Reliever the Mets are interested. If there is a Outfielder on the Trade market or Free agent Market the mets are interested.

    Nothing new.

I know these are just bogus rumors and misinformation.

But, for the sake of playing along, I take this stuff at face value (as in, as-sume it is valid just to have something to discuss!)

based on that logic, how could anyone be interested in Millwood or padilla, but not Vazquez? And certainly not without (a seemingly nonexistant) huge difference in money required?

Vazquez would be a respectable addition to the back end of the rotation. The ther guys are stiffs.

Now, that deal to the rays is enticing, although it could end up being a salary (and heilmann!) dump, if Jackson flames out. Really depends on the prospect (either a 2B or a C would be nice!)

Not that I know anything about Ru, or Ramirez for that matter., and of course it is probably totally made up. But it pas-ses the time..

I like Dye trade only if it involves Jenks. From what Ken Rosenthal is saying, it looks like White Sox want a young starting pitcher and an outfielder for Dye, who will be basically one year rental. Way too much for a 37 year old outfielder. But if they throw in Jenks in the mix, I’m all for it.

    • stickguy says:

wanting and getting are 2 differernt things. And I really don’t see jenks, at least not at a price that makes sense for Omar to pay. Certainly not when there are viable options just sitting on the FA sale table!

Now, if this trade did happen, it would start the domino effect. Might actually end up as a wholesale makeover of the team.

Most people seem to think there will be some new BP arms and a couple SPs, and thats it, but just maybe Omar goes big, and starts wheeling and dealing all over the place?

Something like a Delgado trade (or even Castillo) could certainly lead to 2-3-4 additional moves. Maybe even something good, like a Teix in our Xmas stockings!

Honestly, there are really only 3 postions locked up on this team (3B, SS and CF) and 2 SPs. beyond that, everyone should be in play for the right deal.

Ok I’ll play along….there is rumor going around that the Blue Jays are looking to trade Roy Halladay and that JP Ricciardo has stated that he is enamored with Val Pascucci…..so….yeah I’d do that trade.

  8. stickguy says:

Oh, Heilmann can serve as the young(ish) SP. AH and Evans for 1 year of dye and his salary. SOunds OK to me.

    Then unload Castillo for anything.

heck, Make it AH, Evans and Castillo for Dye and Vazquez. Mets eat the (large) difference in salary.

Move Murhpy to 2B. Get someone like Grudz to back him up.

    Reyes S
    Murphy L
    Wright R
    Delgado L
    Beltran S
    Dye R
    Church L
    Catcher. r/l (platoon)

Looks like a nice, strong, balanced line up to me.

santana, maine, pelf, Vazquez + TBD also looks fine.

Then just beef up the bench and fix the pen. Done.

  9. guierllNO MOta says:

    Fresh from the rumor mill:

Josh Byrnes wants to trade Brandon Webb AND Dan Haren for Luis Castillo and Pedro Feliciano.

    My source is VERY reliable

    Do it Omar!!!!

  10. guierllNO MOta says:

Kent Brockman just reported that the Mets traded Carlos Beltran for Duffman. More details to follow….

    • Steviefan84 says:

We can’t accept that deal unless Met fans get a year of free beers.

      • guierllNO MOta says:

I just spoke with a well placed source with knowledge of the Mets way of thinking and he told me this tidbit

“The Mets goal in both Free Agency and Trades is to get the best players possible while giving up the least players/prospects and cash as possible”

and remember this is from a well place reliable source who is familiar with the Mets way of thinking…so…Ken Rosenthal su-ck it

  11. kistics says:

I don’t see Vaquez being anything close to what he was in Montreal, especially in NY. We all saw him with th Yanks and everyone thought that he would be great.

  12. CaseStreet says:

My turn. Mets to begin rebuilding process. Omar plans on building around Reyes, Wright, and Pelf. Everyone else is for sale.

  13. zen says:

    time to improve on this:

    benfry.com/salaryper/

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Before I went completely blind staring at that graph, the one positive thought I had was “thank God for the Yankees,” the team with the more precipitously dropping thicker red bar.

But yes, you’re right zen. Must improve on that. It makes the whole of New York professional baseball seem like the richest, dumbest group anywhere.

Upsetting news from Rotoworld and the NY POST:
    ==================================================
The Rockies turned down the Mets’ proposal of Aaron Heilman for Huston Street, the New York Post reports.
A trade apparently is still a possibility, but the Rockies would want Pedro Feliciano along with Heilman. The Mets think that’s too high of a price to pay for a guy in Street who might not even be their closer by the time the season starts.
    ===================================================

Are you kidding me. Do it. Do it now. Feliciano is awful. He can’t get out a righty to save his life. We don’t need people like him in the bullpen. PULL THE TRIGGER OMAR!!!!! NOW…

    • therealsince86 says:

I don’t think this has any merritt either. Of course the Mets would send Feliciano and Heilman for Street.

      • mark4212 says:

It’s according to the NY Post. It better not be true.

      • mark4212 says:

You me and everyone on this board would do it in a fraction of a heart beat. I’ll also give them Show, and Joe Smith if they want.

The scary thing is OMAR might not.

The bullpen is horrible and i want it completely revamped. Only guy I would consider keeping is Sanchez, because he was coming off a year and a half of injuries and rehab, pitched the whole season and might be in line for a rebound year.

Other then that all gone. Bye bye

        • therealsince86 says:

I would keep Smith and Stokes for sure. Don’t really care one way or another on Sanchez.

        • steadyeddie says:

Smith COULD be a real deal….
which brings me to Murphy and the sophmore jinx and the pitchers figuring out a young hitter and we need more time; let’s stop inserting this guy at 2nd, 1st and LF until we know what we got!
          (Let the verbal beatings begin!)

  16. therealsince86 says:

“Expect the Cubs to figure out where Kerry Wood stands before deciding whether to offer.” From MLBtraderumors.

This guys is why no big names are being signed yet. Sign Wood now, cost a pick. Sign Wood in a couple of weeks, may cost you no picks.
