Read: Manuel is Thankful

by Regis Courtemanche on November 26th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Marty Noble at MLB.com writes about what Mets skipper Jerry Manuel plans to do this Thanksgiving:

“On the night before the family gathers for Thanksgiving, Manuel is content. He knows that most of his family will surround him. A baseball season of challenge, something he relishes, awaits him, as do additional experiences in the role of grandfather… And to his delight, there are more experiences for him as a son, as his mother is to share Thanksgiving dinner with the family.”

…not to take away from the tone of this article, but i’ll be thankful when this ‘hot stove season’ finally gets underway because all these rumors are wearing on me…

Links: VORP, Hater, Wright, and Castillo

by Regis Courtemanche on November 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Ken Davidoff at Newsday posts his second annual “overrated and over-hated 2008″ list which includes Willie Randolph (overrated) and Carlos Beltran (over-hated).

At Amazin’ Avenue, the saber-minded Eric Simon lists Mets VORP leaders through the years. For more on VORP, go here.

…this kind of thing must take forever to do…

The Virginian-Pilot has a video of David Wright doing charity work with kids on Tuesday.

Lastly, Rich Coutinho at ESPN thinks Luis Castillo deserves a second chance here in New York, writing: “There is too much pedigree in Castillo for me to throw dirt on him now. He seems to be contrite about his poor season while at the same time, he appears to be hungry to be an integral part of the 2009 Mets. I think he deserves a second chance in this town and he may just surprise us all.”

…if the mets keep him, i pray to god you are right rich, for his sake and for ours…

Outfield: Mets and Phillies on Dye’s No-Trade List

by Matthew Cerrone on November 26th, 2008 at 11:04 am

The Mets and Phillies are among the six teams on the no-trade list, reports MLB.com, according to Dye’s agent.

…as i wrote yesterday, dye was willing to approve a deal to the Red Sox once before, so i do not take this to mean he’s anti-northeast, so much as he just wants a say regarding his destination

Meanwhile, according to 1530 Radio in Cincinnati, the Reds offered RHP Homer Bailey and a second player for Dye.

Yesterday, on FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal reported the White Sox are asking teams for a young starting pitcher plus additional players in a deal for Dye.

However, he added, “The Mets, Rays and Phillies are among the teams balking at such a price.”

Starting Pitcher: Sabathia could change Landscape

by Matthew Cerrone on November 26th, 2008 at 10:27 am

Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times reported the Angels could offer CC Sabathia a six-year, $140 million deal, much like the Yankees offered.

According to Jon Heyman, at SI.com, “If the Angels can steal Sabathia, that may change the entire free-agent landscape.”

the buzz around baseball suggests the Angels and Mark Teixeira have reached a bit of an impasse…and if teixeira is seeking a 10–year deal, like has been reported, i can understand why…so, sabathia is waiting for the Angels and Giants to get in the bidding for his services…

…at the very least, he’ll eventually have to weigh a slightly lesser offer from the Angels or Giants, on the West Coast, where he wants to be, against a bigger offer from the Yankees, where it’s pretty clear he does not want to end up, otherwise he would have taken their offer by now

once he signs, it will set a ceiling, and players like AJ Burnett, Derek Lowe and other free agent pitchers will begin to sign

Speaking of which, the Mets are not on Burnett’s six-team wish list, according to MLB.com, however the Braves and Phillies are.

Relief Pitcher: Mets contact K-Rod, Fuentes

by Matthew Cerrone on November 26th, 2008 at 9:40 am

“Omar Minaya today began reaching out to the agents for free-agent closers Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes,” wrote Jon Heyman last night to his blog for SI.com.

ding, ding, ding…let the games begin

Yesterday in the Daily News, after speaking with Minaya, Adam Rubin wrote, “conversations with agents may get more substantive later this week.”

However, in his report, Heyman adds, “It is believed Minaya begun laying the groundwork with agents today to meet at the Winter meetings, which begin Dec. 8 in Las Vegas, Nev.”

Update9:45 am

Newsday and the Daily News each reported the Mets had received medical information for Rodriguez last week.

However, the New York Post wrote, ‘contrary to a published report,’ the team didn’t receive the medical report until Monday of this week.

…the thing is, they may both be right

…the way it was explained to me, the team may have initially been sent medical information from rodriguez’s agent, i.e., the pitcher’s personal records, while the Angels delivered his official medical reports a few days agotwo reports, same player, same type of documents, two different dates
