By Regis Courtemanche - Nov 26, 2008 11:58 am

Chris Mascaro of Newsday caught up with Jose Reyes on Long Island yesterday and discussed various topics such as Luis Castillo’s leadership, the Phillies, and the closer situation.

Reyes, on playing in the WBC:

“You get to represent your country. That’s the most important thing to me. You just try to be there and try to do whatever they ask me to do.”

Adam Rubin has more from Reyes regarding Castillo at the Daily News as well.

Just out of curiosity, did Geico pull their sponsorship for Metsblog already? Geez, this economy is going down the cr*pper.

I never bothered to notice the Geico sponser page once the playoffs were over. Maybe it’s just temporary until the season starts? Or they just get a new sponser every year. Or they are just waiting for K-Rod to sign. lol

Nice observation. I hadn’t noticed it. I remember Matt posting something to the effect of “it’s a tremendous day for independent blogging” when he announced the sponsorship. Does the absence of their sponsorship now mean that it’s a day that will live infamy for independent blogging?

It would be interesting to see if both New York 3rd basemen put their name into the U.S. lineup. There is also Evan Longoria and possibly B.J. Upton. Russel Martin might be one of the catchers that could potentially be on the U.S. team. Who knows

that is what it’s all about, Jose….
    Happy Thanksgiving, ya’ all

I have a name that hasn’t been mentioned here. How about signing Omar Vizquel for the bench? He’s an old timer, but the man can still play the game. He started the year off slowly after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in spring training. He did rebound though to hit .304 after the All-Star break and defensively, Vizquel, despite his old age, still is a phenomenal fielder out there. He’d probably provide us some insurance at second base and could even help keep Reyes fresh at times. And, I’m sure given his reputation, he’d be a great addition for the clubhouse. It has the makings for a tremendous under the radar move.

I guess it would depend on the contact terms, but I could see that as a good 25th man signing. I could see a bench of Castro, Endy, Tatis, Vizquel, and Evans or Marlon.

I just don’t know if Vizquel is viewed as an Argenis Reyes type backup (obviously better of course) or if some team would still see him as a starter.

How was he able to hear Reyes over the thumping club music?

I would not blame Reyes for spiking Utley or Rollins next year . . . though that’s tough to do when you slide headfirst.
