Relief Pitcher: Mets contact K-Rod, Fuentes
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 26, 2008 9:40 am

“Omar Minaya today began reaching out to the agents for free-agent closers Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes,” wrote Jon Heyman last night to his blog for SI.com.

ding, ding, ding…let the games begin

Yesterday in the Daily News, after speaking with Minaya, Adam Rubin wrote, “conversations with agents may get more substantive later this week.”

However, in his report, Heyman adds, “It is believed Minaya begun laying the groundwork with agents today to meet at the Winter meetings, which begin Dec. 8 in Las Vegas, Nev.”

Update9:45 am

Newsday and the Daily News each reported the Mets had received medical information for Rodriguez last week.

However, the New York Post wrote, ‘contrary to a published report,’ the team didn’t receive the medical report until Monday of this week.

…the thing is, they may both be right

…the way it was explained to me, the team may have initially been sent medical information from rodriguez’s agent, i.e., the pitcher’s personal records, while the Angels delivered his official medical reports a few days agotwo reports, same player, same type of documents, two different dates

I’d wait on the closer market. There’s no reason to rush when there are that many available closers out there. What Omar should do is go all-out for Roy Halladay. How perfect would he fit? Start with FMart and Parnell and go from there….

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

FMart and Parnell won’t even come close to getting Halladay. The Blue Jays would probably want Reyes or Wright.

      • casey s. says:

The issue is that Doc Halladay is signed through 2010. That’s two years of one of the best pitchers in baseball (at reasonable ace money, too – 09:$14.25M, 10:$15.75M). He would cost the Mets a major player.

        • losmets57 says:

We could add Maine in there. For Halladay, I ‘d trade him…

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Highly unlikely the Blue Jays would do that considering Maine is coming off surgery and a year where he regressed a bit. No chance.

    • casey s. says:

While there are four closers out there via free agency, two of them are Hoffman (who’s most likely done) and Wood (completely unreliable from a health perspective). So, really there are two, Fuentes and K-Rod. Presumably they are both going to get very good money this offseason. The way I see it, if Omar has his number for either Fuentes or K-Rod and he can come close to it, why not pull the trigger. He has so much else to focus on and knowing who the closer will be allows his to set up the rest of the pen. Also, I’d hate to see him lose out on one of these guys and have to seek a trade for a Jenks. He needs those trade bits for the rest of the pen and leftfield, perhaps.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

In this current offseason, Fuentes and/or KRod are not in high demand. The chances of Omar losing out on both of them are very slim.

      • Hoffman isn’t done at all but will be someday soon. He’s better off with a short contract on a team already grooming a replacement.

Wood is less of a health risk when he’s not throwing a ton of innings.

    • redmarauder07 says:

No way Jose. The Mets should just pull the trigger now before he hangs out there long enough to make other teams think they have a shot.

Just get this thing done because all this waiting is giving me agita.

      • Razor Shines says:

“Just get this thing done because all this waiting is giving me agita.”

Great reason. I remember posts like this last year that were throwing F-Mart into the Santana deal for the same reasons. Be patient.

  2. casey s. says:

I have to say, for me there is no offseason – just a period when there are no games. I am psyched things are going to really start heating up!

Let’s go Omar! Let’s go Omar! Let’s go Omar!

  3. CaseStreet says:

Omar should get this done b4 winter meetings to concentrate on trading for Vasquez and getting rid of Heilman/Show/Castillo and maybe Delgado.

    Let’s Go Mets!

  4. MetsRmilife says:

Couldn’t agree more casey, but the last month or so has been really dull all around baseball. I need it to pick up or I might actually have to get something done.

As for the closer, I am excited about the idea of bringing in a set-up man with closer experience just from a why not have a back-up standpoint. Especially because it looks like K-Rod might fall into out laps. In my opinion there is a reason that such a big deal is being made out of the medical records. I know it is a standard procedure, but since when do you hear so much about it. All over sports media there are bits and pieces implying that K-Rod has some pretty significant wear and tear problems on his arm. I’m not saying he wasn’t great last year, or, that I think if we sign him he will break down. I am saying that having a set-up man better than Ayala or Heilman is REALLY important.

  5. JamesK says:

Who gives a flying F when or from whom the medical reports were delivered? I get a kick out of these media folks who think it means something to “break” a story, especially when 90% of their stories aren’t true.

    • Tidewater says:

These durn media folks, holdin’ people accountable and just tryin’ to gin up stories fer entertainment value don’t chya know…

My friend Joe the Plumber never met a media folk he liked, and let me tell ya right here, that Joe, oh he’s met more’n his fair of them media folk. Most of them don’ even go ta church, don’t chya know…

      • CaseStreet says:

I liked you on SNL but that turkey bit was just too much. Good luck in 2012.

        • Tidewater says:

I’m so sick of people jumping on the media. The same people who clamor for the news get all upset when premature reports end up not panning out. You can’t have it both ways.

The media does its best to serve both its audience/readership and the truth.

  6. derxmasta says:

Omar should get the closer first since its “priority”
w/o locking down the closer position
he is handcuffed at every other position.
if he can get this out of the way then he can focus on dumping castillo/heilman and all other guys.

if he were to get a starter/offensive player first
many fans will get on him for not focusing on the #1 need of the mets which is relief pitching.

    so i say
    get relief first!
    everything else second.

  7. BiggieSmalls says:

the closer is independent of any other move.

I am hoping beyond hope that CC spurns the Yanks and goes to LA (Dodgers or Angels). that would start the wheels moving on some interesting Met Moves as dominos start to fall.

    Could mean Delgado moving

  8. oleosmirf says:

what i find hysterical is people thinking that a GM can’t do more than one thing at once.

just b/c a report says Omar is looking at so and so doesnt mean he’s not looking at other players and other positions every day.

so who cares who he gets first, second, third or last as long as he makes the right moves who cares what order its in

  9. MetsFan234 says:

Good. I think its about time that the Mets should start to talking to the agents of both K-Rod, and Brian Fuentes. I think that the Mets will get one or the other.

Both of these guys are good players, but i expect the Mets to go after K-Rod more, because of his experience in the closer role and his ability to close out games. Fuentes is a great pitcher, but i don’t know if that he can go out there and close out games. We will find out who the Mets go after.

  10. the Straw says:

Omar is going to quietly try to get both of them.

    • Tidewater says:

Doubt it. Once one of them signs here it seems unlikely the other will come to be the set up guy.

  11. NYMETSFAN718 says:

Hey guys i got a suggestion? Dont rip me apart its just a SUGGESTION!!

    How bout Andy Pettite?

  12. alex242 says:

As i said before look at how young and good we’ll be if we get tex and k-rod..

D-Wright (25 years old, 2nd best 3rd basemen in the game)
JOSE (25 years old, top 3 SS in the game)
Santana (29 years old, TOP PITCHER IN THE GAME)
Beltran (30 years old, arguably best CF’der in the game)
Teixeira (28 years old, top 5 first basemen in the game)
K-rod (26 years old, top 5 closer in the game0

under 28 years old: pelfrey. maine, murphy, church, evans, parnell, niese, F-mart….. we need to get young and continue developing as well…

    • CaseStreet says:

Maybe we should start a Bring Tex to Queens campaign, like the Bring Brett to the Jets campaign. Hey, it worked for them.

If we had Tex the current LF and 2B situations wouldn’t matter so much.

I sure hope we can get K-Rod on the cheap, trade for a SP like Vasquez, and throw the bank at Tex like we did with Beltran. 7/140 should do it.

  13. alex242 says:

if not 7/150…. i’ll sign for that.. WE WANT TEX FOR THE METS!!!!

  14. chico says:

I think what you are looking for is something like “Tex Mets”

  15. HereWeegoAgain says:

Krod and Tex would be the way to go. Two more cornerstone players.

  16. ChasingTheCool says:

I don’t understand everyone’s infatuation with K-Rod. His peripherals have been declining almost yearly, and last year’s rate of 1-2-3 saves is scary. If Fuentes can be had, and Street acquired for the price of Heilman and Feliciano, I say go for it. You’d have two relievers at the back of the bullpen with closing experience. And if the Mets are really concerned about giving up Feliciano, sign Beimel.

Seriously, K-Rod? His stats were terrible last year, and have been steadily declining.
