News: Mets sign 17-yr-old RHP Avellones
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 1, 2008 4:48 pm

The Mets have signed 17–year-old Venezuelan RHP Carlos Avellones, according to Primera Hora.

…from what i can gather, the above is accurate, though the Mets do not typically issue press releases for such signings…

According to his agent, Avellones has ‘huge potential,’ while maintaining his fastball around 90 mph.

hey, the more the merrier…sign them all, if you can

  2. J0eSmiTh says:

    why?

a 17 year old with a a 90 mph fastball sounds pretty damn good too me.

  3. ksuth says:

According to my agent, I have ‘huge potential’ as well… =\

    (Secret: I don’t have an agent…)

the mets signed a 17 year old pitcher, for a team with one of the worst farm systems in baseball, this is good news

    • NYMETSFAN718 says:

Yes, I totally agree, you cant have enough good young arms. Very good signing by Omar.

  5. zen says:

why not? i’m for spending a lot of money on scouting and signing and drafting young minor league talent.

  6. NYMETSFAN718 says:

    I HATE TO SAY IT!!!!!,

BUT I TOLD YOU GUYS SO!!!!

    3 in one day!! WOW!!

  7. dominicanboy08 says:

I am 19 and throw 91MPH, sign me up!!! I am not kidding…

  8. DaveSchneck says:

I don’t get the sarcasm here. Is it a BAD thing that the Mets signed a 17 yo who throws around 90? If he’s no good, you release him in a few years. If he turns out to be something, you hit a homerun. Signing these South American kids seems to be working out pretty well recently(FMart, Wilmer Flores)

    • phukthephills says:

well..fmart and wilmer flores didnt really work out yet…… i hope they do but lets give it some time

  9. Kellman says:

There is literally no reason to be against this. It’s probably going to be a meaningless signing, but maybe it isn’t. Regardless, there is no downside. The farm system is pretty brutal, might as well take a shot.

  10. CaseStreet says:

These types of signings are normal. The farm system isn’t only made of players that come through the draft.

  11. BullpenHelp says:

Yeah… this is a nothing move.

There’s no reason to pat Omar on the back and there is no reason to criticize him. The chance of this guy ever making a major league roster is still roughly 1 in 100,000. This is the last time his name will ever be mentioned on MetsBlog.

  12. Elastic says:

    Hmmm….Venezuela

He probably throws 88mph and is really 27 years old.

LOL the funny thing about your comment is that it’s probably true.

      • Meddler says:

I don’t know, not necessarily. If you mean we’ll never hear about the majority of teenagers turning pro if all we got was an age, what hand he throws with, a radar gun reading, yeah that’s probably true. But lets get some more info, there are some international signings that you do keep an eye even before they throw a professional pitch or take their first pro AB. A lot of people had Wilmer Flores on the radar well before he made his debut this year. Same with F-Mart, Deolis Guerra, Jefry Marte, and even Jose Reyes. While this kid obviously is no Michael Iona, none of the other guys I mentioned from the Mets organization were on that level when they were signed either. I’ll reserve judgment for a bit, figuring we’ll either get a scouting report from Kevin Goldstein or John Sickels, and if nothing comes up, then yeah, its just another international signing.

Yay, another 17 year old prospect that the Mets will over hype and get their fans all giddy about.

Maybe he can follow in the footsteps of the oft-injured Fernando Martinez and the ever so amazing talented 16-year old catching phenom Francisco Pena.

    • kingman 26 says:

Or maybe he can follow in the footsteps of that 16-year-old prospect Jose Reyes.

      Ever hear of him?

Why would anyone be negative about signing a 17 year old who throws hard?

      • go get ‘em kingman!

        • kingman 26 says:

          LOL!

I was going to use Pelfrey as an example of another prospect who turned out great, then I remembered he was drafted out of college and wasn’t 17 when we signed him….but he still rules!!

        • Agreed :D by the way i didn’t know that Reyes was that young when he was in the farm system :o wasn’t he the youngest player to reach the majors in a while?

        • kingman 26 says:

That is a good question….he was 16 when we signed him, and I think he was the youngest when he came up in 2003….there were a few about as young as him the few previous years I think (Ankiel?), but I think the last guy before him who was way short of his 20th birthday was Andruw Jones, who was barely 19 I think in 1996 when he played his first game….

        • ah interesting. i just hope Reyes doesn’t fade like andruw by the middle of his career :o
