Read: Tonight’s Deadline to offer Arbitration
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 1, 2008 11:47 am

Tonight, at midnight, is the deadline for teams to offer arbitration to their own free agents, who have until next Sunday, Dec. 7, to accept it.

Teams can continue to negotiate with their own free agents, regardless of whether the player accepts arbitration.

According to Ken Davidoff in Newsday, while the Mets are likely to offer salary arbitration to free-agent Oliver Perez, they will probably not do so with free-agent Pedro Martinez, according to multiple industry sources.

…perez will not accept arbitration for one season, because he can almost certainly sign a multi-year deal, be it with the Mets or with another team…however, by offering it, if he signs with another team, the Mets will receive two compensatory draft picks…

…on the other hand, if the Mets offer arbitration to pedro, he could very well accept it, for lack of a better offer on the open market, which means the Mets have to welcome him back, like it or not

Davidoff also believes the Mets will not offer arbitration to Moises Alou, Luis Ayala, Damion Easley, Orlando Hernandez, Ramon Martinez, Ricardo Rincon or Matt Wise.

To learn more about the arbitration process, go to MLB.com.

the buzz in baseball seems to be that most teams are waiting to see how players respond to arbitration offers before jumping in to the free-agent pool…

…once they know who will cost what in terms of compensatory draft picks, the Hot Stove will become a lot hotter…

Damn, I was hoping they’d offer it to Alou and Duque.

I’m surprised that they wouldn’t offer it to Ayala.

    • kingman 26 says:

      LOL!

Hey Case, I did give a thoughtful response to your thoughtful response on the other thread from over the weekend….and I still love your bullpen ideas….

      • CaseStreet says:

Saw it over the weekend. I was initially all for Manny but just feel that the money would be better spent on Tex, although the long contract might kill any chances of that happening.

I like Rivera because of his power, plus defense and he’ll be cheap, which I consider to be an upgrade over Murphy/Tatis platoon.

The good thing is that there’s a great chance of this team improving in all areas.

          I agree 100%!!

We should have a re-done bullpen, one more starter at least, and one more good bat…..

    • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

i really think ayala is a good bullpen arm, if used for the 6th or 7th inning.

people blame him for failing as a closer when he never should have been in that position in the first place

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I agree. For the most part, he got the job done. His ERA was bloated because of 1 or 2 bad performances, but other than that, he pitched plenty of scoreless innings.

  2. MeesesGlokmah says:

I wouldn’t mind Pedro back if he can work out the problems he had last year, but that isn’t likely to happen anytime soon (if at all). I thought he had a good clubhouse presence.

I hope they offer arbitration to Easley, Ramon Martinez, and Ayala. I liked those guys.

  3. therealsince86 says:

I don’t see a down side to offering to Ayala. If he accepts then fine he can be a decent 6-7th innning guy that now has closer experience thanks to us. If not then we get a pick.
All the other guys? No point if they don’t net us a pick back then let them be FA like everyone else.

  4. zen says:

if pedro returns then omar has been promising these guys (alou, el duque) the ny mets retirement plan: full benefits well after your servicable.

  5. I don’t see the point of not offering arbitration to Ayala or Easley. Sure, Easley doesn’t help us get younger, but he’s a solid guy to have around.

I think they should definitely reconsider making an offer to Ayala… he pitched pretty well, for the most part. Not a closer, by any means, but a decent guy to give an inning here and there. Def. capable of getting guys out.

  6. Elastic says:

Out with all that dead wood.

  7. Damion Easley is the best, most clutch pinch hitter we have. We’ll see how happy people are when we let him go and have to sit through 100 Val Pascucci at bats.

    • alex242 says:

LOL, Careful, there’s someone in the mets blog who loves val pascucci… he has mention him at leat i million times..

    • HitTheSinkerBall says:

I thought Easley did not do a good job off the bench last year. Played good when he started but not off the bench pinch hitting. Not sure check the numbers

    • Gina says:

Why would they let him go and not replace him with a better option from FA?

      • Show me a better option who can play a similar position. Just taking a quick glance at the list…here are your “better options”:

Alex Cora, Orlando Cabrera, mark Grudzeilanek (yuck), Adam Everett, Nick Punto, Miguel Cairo, David Eckstein, Mark Loretta, Nomar, Counsell, Durham, Mike Lamb.

        I’ll keep Easley.

        • therealsince86 says:

Seriously? I would take many of those over Easley. Easley is a good guy but he’s just injured too much to be counted on and can’t really play defense anymore.

        • Gina says:

Why are you yucking over Grudzeilaneck? He’s a much better option than Easley offensively and defensively and Lamb probably is too since I doubt he’ll be as terrible offensively as he was this year based on his previous years. Cora, Counsel, Punta, Evrett are all defensive upgrades and not that much different offensively.

        • therealsince86 says:

Example my favorite Grudzy. The guy had a higher BA, OBP, SLG, OPS than Easley and can actually field.

        • therealsince86 says:

And why did you put Cabrerra’s name up there? Like he is going to come to the Mets to be a backup. I would take Lorretta, Nomar or Durham as suming the cash and years are the same. Which I realize they won’t be. What does Easley provide that these guys don’t besides a “good” guy?

        • I was putting a list together of 2B/SS type guys. Easley provides more pop than Grudzy. We have zero power on the bench. Our biggest threat is Cancel. Gimme a break.

You need a guy like Matt Stairs that can hit a 3-run homer. I’m not saying he is the best player in the league or that he should start, but I think he would be cost-effective as a backup. Grudzy is a starter and shouldn’t be mentioned in this category either. Easley is a bench player that was forced into a starting role because of injuries.

        • Gina says:

Easley slugged under .400 last year, his career mark is .404. If thats the best pop we can find for our bench then we’re in major trouble. If you want pop then let easley go and bring in a bench outfielder or corner infielder.

      • therealsince86 says:

Exactly, maybe one that can field like Grudzy :)

    • Danny says:

I love Easley, but he’s a terrible pinch hitter. Always has been.

    • damioneasley1 says:

      THANK YOU!!!!!!!

    • Ceetar says:

Easley was a disaster last year. It just go overshadowed by how much worse Argenis was at second.

There are a zillion other options, equal or better.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t offer to every RP though, never know who’s going to come through next year.

Besides, an arbitration hearing for any reliever on the Mets last year is likely to result in the reliever having to offer the Mets money rather than vice versa.

  8. stickguy says:

only Ayala if I had the choice. Unless he made way too much money last year. So, if the $ makes sense, I offer it since I wouldn’t mind having him back for a middle relief role, and if not, another pick to help replenish the farm.

    • kidfromqueens says:

He made 1.7 mil last season, so in arbitration, he’d probably make at least 1.4 or so. That’s a bit overpriced (although not completely outrageous) for a guy with his 2008 numbers- 1.45 WHIP and 24 walks to 50 Ks in 76 innings…

  9. HitTheSinkerBall says:

They are not offering them arbitration because this team has fallen apart the last 2 seasons and personal changes have to be made. Not just a tweak here and there like last offseason. There has to be a good amount of player turnover. If it does not happen with the Easley’s, Ayalas, Pedro’s …. then who does it happen with?

    • NYMETSFAN718 says:

It happens with those who deserve to be sent away. I.E. Heilman, Shoe, Feliciano, Castillo

      • HitTheSinkerBall says:

Well is not going anywhere because they has there chance already to dump him and Heilman for Street but did not want to give up Feliciano.

No one wants Castillo and I doubt no one wants Shoe so out of the names you listed only Heilman will be gone.

      • Gina says:

Shoe, and Feliciano to a lesser extent, did his job when he was used correctly. His numbers against lefties were insane. Heilman is a weird case and Castillo, bleh I imagine we’re stuck with him.

        • stickguy says:

but, you can’t have a pen with 2 LOOGYs and at least 2 ROOGYs. Unless you want to see more 3 pitcher 8th inning shows again!

        • therealsince86 says:

I don’t think she was advocating keeping them both. At least I hope not. I am ok with either returning although I would rather see Everyday Eddie brought in to replace one of them.

        • Gina says:

No I definitely wasnt. I was saying the problem was the individual players it was the poorly constructed bullpen. Getting rid of one or both of those two isn’t going to automatically fix the teams problems, which for some reason some people seem to think. It’s whether Omar can not make the same mistakes with the bullpen. I know people always say the bullpen is a crap shoot, but that doesn’t excuse having a bullpen full of specialists.

  10. IAmKeithHernandez says:

What’s the deal with Angel Pagan? Are we keeping him next yr?

    • Gina says:

I think he has options left so there wouldn’t really be a reason not too. But I haven’t really heard anything about him.

      • therealsince86 says:

He may have to be in AAA. This is why I am in favor of getting rid of Endy. I think at this point Evans provides more in terms of bench as he is RH and can (barely) play OF and 1B. Pagan is a switch hitter and better on offense than Endy. I know we lose a little on defense but those are the breaks.

        • Gina says:

I would never get rid of Endy. His defense is just way too good. Good enough that it pretty much makes up for his bat. We’d never get true value back.

        • therealsince86 says:

I guess but look how little he was used last year. I want someone that can play everyday if needed. They did not even consider Endy an option when both corner OF went down.

        • Gina says:

I think I can agree with that but I think that’s a problem with Manuel/or the front office idk, not with Endy himself. I don’t think a managerial fault should dictate how we build the team, it should be corrected be someone.
