Read: Tonight’s Deadline to offer Arbitration
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 1, 2008 11:47 am

Tonight, at midnight, is the deadline for teams to offer arbitration to their own free agents, who have until next Sunday, Dec. 7, to accept it.

Teams can continue to negotiate with their own free agents, regardless of whether the player accepts arbitration.

According to Ken Davidoff in Newsday, while the Mets are likely to offer salary arbitration to free-agent Oliver Perez, they will probably not do so with free-agent Pedro Martinez, according to multiple industry sources.

…perez will not accept arbitration for one season, because he can almost certainly sign a multi-year deal, be it with the Mets or with another team…however, by offering it, if he signs with another team, the Mets will receive two compensatory draft picks…

…on the other hand, if the Mets offer arbitration to pedro, he could very well accept it, for lack of a better offer on the open market, which means the Mets have to welcome him back, like it or not

Davidoff also believes the Mets will not offer arbitration to Moises Alou, Luis Ayala, Damion Easley, Orlando Hernandez, Ramon Martinez, Ricardo Rincon or Matt Wise.

To learn more about the arbitration process, go to MLB.com.

the buzz in baseball seems to be that most teams are waiting to see how players respond to arbitration offers before jumping in to the free-agent pool…

…once they know who will cost what in terms of compensatory draft picks, the Hot Stove will become a lot hotter…

Damn, I was hoping they’d offer it to Alou and Duque.

I’m surprised that they wouldn’t offer it to Ayala.

    • kingman 26 says:

      LOL!

Hey Case, I did give a thoughtful response to your thoughtful response on the other thread from over the weekend….and I still love your bullpen ideas….

      • CaseStreet says:

Saw it over the weekend. I was initially all for Manny but just feel that the money would be better spent on Tex, although the long contract might kill any chances of that happening.

I like Rivera because of his power, plus defense and he’ll be cheap, which I consider to be an upgrade over Murphy/Tatis platoon.

The good thing is that there’s a great chance of this team improving in all areas.

        • kingman 26 says:

“The good thing is that there’s a great chance of this team improving in all areas.”

          I agree 100%!!

We should have a re-done bullpen, one more starter at least, and one more good bat…..

    • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

i really think ayala is a good bullpen arm, if used for the 6th or 7th inning.

people blame him for failing as a closer when he never should have been in that position in the first place

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I agree. For the most part, he got the job done. His ERA was bloated because of 1 or 2 bad performances, but other than that, he pitched plenty of scoreless innings.

  2. MeesesGlokmah says:

I wouldn’t mind Pedro back if he can work out the problems he had last year, but that isn’t likely to happen anytime soon (if at all). I thought he had a good clubhouse presence.

I hope they offer arbitration to Easley, Ramon Martinez, and Ayala. I liked those guys.

    • therealsince86 says:

Why offer them arbitration, however? You might get stuck with them at a higher price. It does not mean we can’t resign them.

  3. therealsince86 says:

I don’t see a down side to offering to Ayala. If he accepts then fine he can be a decent 6-7th innning guy that now has closer experience thanks to us. If not then we get a pick.
All the other guys? No point if they don’t net us a pick back then let them be FA like everyone else.

  4. zen says:

if pedro returns then omar has been promising these guys (alou, el duque) the ny mets retirement plan: full benefits well after your servicable.

  5. I don’t see the point of not offering arbitration to Ayala or Easley. Sure, Easley doesn’t help us get younger, but he’s a solid guy to have around.

I think they should definitely reconsider making an offer to Ayala… he pitched pretty well, for the most part. Not a closer, by any means, but a decent guy to give an inning here and there. Def. capable of getting guys out.

  6. Elastic says:

Out with all that dead wood.

  7. Damion Easley is the best, most clutch pinch hitter we have. We’ll see how happy people are when we let him go and have to sit through 100 Val Pascucci at bats.

    • alex242 says:

LOL, Careful, there’s someone in the mets blog who loves val pascucci… he has mention him at leat i million times..

    • HitTheSinkerBall says:

I thought Easley did not do a good job off the bench last year. Played good when he started but not off the bench pinch hitting. Not sure check the numbers

    • Gina says:

Why would they let him go and not replace him with a better option from FA?

      • Show me a better option who can play a similar position. Just taking a quick glance at the list…here are your “better options”:

Alex Cora, Orlando Cabrera, mark Grudzeilanek (yuck), Adam Everett, Nick Punto, Miguel Cairo, David Eckstein, Mark Loretta, Nomar, Counsell, Durham, Mike Lamb.

        I’ll keep Easley.

        • therealsince86 says:

Seriously? I would take many of those over Easley. Easley is a good guy but he’s just injured too much to be counted on and can’t really play defense anymore.

        • Gina says:

Why are you yucking over Grudzeilaneck? He’s a much better option than Easley offensively and defensively and Lamb probably is too since I doubt he’ll be as terrible offensively as he was this year based on his previous years. Cora, Counsel, Punta, Evrett are all defensive upgrades and not that much different offensively.

        • therealsince86 says:

Example my favorite Grudzy. The guy had a higher BA, OBP, SLG, OPS than Easley and can actually field.

        • therealsince86 says:

And why did you put Cabrerra’s name up there? Like he is going to come to the Mets to be a backup. I would take Lorretta, Nomar or Durham as suming the cash and years are the same. Which I realize they won’t be. What does Easley provide that these guys don’t besides a “good” guy?

        • I was putting a list together of 2B/SS type guys. Easley provides more pop than Grudzy. We have zero power on the bench. Our biggest threat is Cancel. Gimme a break.

You need a guy like Matt Stairs that can hit a 3-run homer. I’m not saying he is the best player in the league or that he should start, but I think he would be cost-effective as a backup. Grudzy is a starter and shouldn’t be mentioned in this category either. Easley is a bench player that was forced into a starting role because of injuries.

        • Gina says:

Easley slugged under .400 last year, his career mark is .404. If thats the best pop we can find for our bench then we’re in major trouble. If you want pop then let easley go and bring in a bench outfielder or corner infielder.

      • therealsince86 says:

Exactly, maybe one that can field like Grudzy :)

        • Elastic says:

In all likelyhood, the Royals will not offer Grudsy arby, so signing him will cost us nothing. A 2 year deal would be a good move.

    • Danny says:

I love Easley, but he’s a terrible pinch hitter. Always has been.

    • damioneasley1 says:

      THANK YOU!!!!!!!

    • Ceetar says:

Easley was a disaster last year. It just go overshadowed by how much worse Argenis was at second.

There are a zillion other options, equal or better.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t offer to every RP though, never know who’s going to come through next year.

Besides, an arbitration hearing for any reliever on the Mets last year is likely to result in the reliever having to offer the Mets money rather than vice versa.

  8. stickguy says:

only Ayala if I had the choice. Unless he made way too much money last year. So, if the $ makes sense, I offer it since I wouldn’t mind having him back for a middle relief role, and if not, another pick to help replenish the farm.

    • kidfromqueens says:

He made 1.7 mil last season, so in arbitration, he’d probably make at least 1.4 or so. That’s a bit overpriced (although not completely outrageous) for a guy with his 2008 numbers- 1.45 WHIP and 24 walks to 50 Ks in 76 innings…

  9. HitTheSinkerBall says:

They are not offering them arbitration because this team has fallen apart the last 2 seasons and personal changes have to be made. Not just a tweak here and there like last offseason. There has to be a good amount of player turnover. If it does not happen with the Easley’s, Ayalas, Pedro’s …. then who does it happen with?

    • NYMETSFAN718 says:

It happens with those who deserve to be sent away. I.E. Heilman, Shoe, Feliciano, Castillo

      • HitTheSinkerBall says:

Well is not going anywhere because they has there chance already to dump him and Heilman for Street but did not want to give up Feliciano.

No one wants Castillo and I doubt no one wants Shoe so out of the names you listed only Heilman will be gone.

      • Gina says:

Shoe, and Feliciano to a lesser extent, did his job when he was used correctly. His numbers against lefties were insane. Heilman is a weird case and Castillo, bleh I imagine we’re stuck with him.

        • stickguy says:

but, you can’t have a pen with 2 LOOGYs and at least 2 ROOGYs. Unless you want to see more 3 pitcher 8th inning shows again!

        • therealsince86 says:

I don’t think she was advocating keeping them both. At least I hope not. I am ok with either returning although I would rather see Everyday Eddie brought in to replace one of them.

        • Gina says:

No I definitely wasnt. I was saying the problem was the individual players it was the poorly constructed bullpen. Getting rid of one or both of those two isn’t going to automatically fix the teams problems, which for some reason some people seem to think. It’s whether Omar can not make the same mistakes with the bullpen. I know people always say the bullpen is a crap shoot, but that doesn’t excuse having a bullpen full of specialists.

  10. IAmKeithHernandez says:

What’s the deal with Angel Pagan? Are we keeping him next yr?

    • Gina says:

I think he has options left so there wouldn’t really be a reason not too. But I haven’t really heard anything about him.

      • therealsince86 says:

He may have to be in AAA. This is why I am in favor of getting rid of Endy. I think at this point Evans provides more in terms of bench as he is RH and can (barely) play OF and 1B. Pagan is a switch hitter and better on offense than Endy. I know we lose a little on defense but those are the breaks.

        • Gina says:

I would never get rid of Endy. His defense is just way too good. Good enough that it pretty much makes up for his bat. We’d never get true value back.

        • therealsince86 says:

I guess but look how little he was used last year. I want someone that can play everyday if needed. They did not even consider Endy an option when both corner OF went down.

        • Gina says:

I think I can agree with that but I think that’s a problem with Manuel/or the front office idk, not with Endy himself. I don’t think a managerial fault should dictate how we build the team, it should be corrected be someone.

        • therealsince86 says:

It’s that his bat is just that bad. We needed offense, our defense was fine.
Looking at our bench next year
Castro, Tatis are givens. That leaves 3 spots. Evans to me is a good bench guy as he is RH and can play OF and IF. He has good splits also. Now you are down to 2 spots. You have to have a guy that can back up Castillo. So lets say that’s a FA signee. Thus you have 1 spot left. It comes down to Pagan and Endy. To me Pagan is better suited for the team.

        • Gina says:

Our defense wasn’t really fine. Our park helped a lot of our pitchers but our defense, more so infield than outfield was so so. And Endy saves enough runs on defense that he ends up not even costing you runs overall. Defense and offense really shouldn’t be looked at as two different things. It should be looked at as a net difference. If a guy is worth 50 runs on offense, I’m just making up arbitrary numbers than it shouldn’t matter that he’s worth -10 or something on defense. And vica-versa.

    • Moises says:

      I wish he could play 2nd base…

  11. alex242 says:

ayala was a met for like a month and a half, that change is irrelevant, if there’s a change it should be delgado… even though he hit for like 2 months last year he mailed it in for willie in ‘07 and the first 2 months of ‘08 and he has a bad leadership when it comes to face the facts, he’s the first one walking out of the locker with his “i don’t wanna talk to reporters” bulls*** plus he didn’t wanna be a met to begin with.. but he’s omar’s boy so for all of us to expect omar to go get teixeira… DREAM ON.. but is ok, if we don’t make the playoffs i’m sure omar won’t be our GM..

  12. CaseStreet says:

Although I like Easley’s attitude and feel bad that he never made it to the post season I don’t think the Mets should bring him back.

The bench will be interesting because you have a number of options:

    Carp
    A. Reyes
    Anderson
    Chavez
    Muryphy
    Evans
    Pagan
    Tatis
    Castro

A huge problem I see is with MI. I’d like to see what Felipe Lopez is asking for. He had a good second half last year and has played all over the infield.

    • therealsince86 says:

Grudzy is my man but Lopez is not a bad option either.
Anderson needs to be released. Carp does not really have a position on the bench. Awful Reyes is uh… Awful.
      Right now I see
Castro, Endy, Tatis, Pagan/Evans, Easley replacement. If Murphy can back up 2B then you might see Pagan and Evans.

  13. alex242 says:

i love easly but he’s always hurt, and in some way i blame him for getting hurt and allowing us to see luis castillo play the field during september.. with that being said he was a quite leader who lead by example in the field, is a shame we won’t sign him but i think we should go young all over the place, specially bench where we had a bunch of scrubs.. and luis castillo.. (just vomit)

  14. matlack says:

Does anyone here Dr. Nick Rivera’s voice when Omar speaks?

  15. matlack says:

Omar told Castillo “instead of bread when you make a sandwich, use pop-tarts”

  16. zen says:

sherman of the ny post: mets want niese as 5th starter.

you have to be kidding me. talk about a huge mistake. this better be false.

    • therealsince86 says:

We already talked about that one today. Lets hope that is smoke or the Mets are going after a true # 2 starter if not. A rotation of
Johan, Pelfrey, Perez, Maine, Niese is yuck, yuck, yuck. Our bullpen better be dang good if you have the 5 inning express out there 3/5 times.

  17. alex242 says:

i wouldn’t mind them wanting him as a 5th starter, as long as we sign sabathia and MANNY OR TEIXEIRA!!!!!

    • therealsince86 says:

Really you think we will sign CC AND Manny/Tex? LOL. I could deal with him at the #5 this year if we signed CC OR Tex.

      • alex242 says:

I’m statin the fact, niese didn’t impress me at all last year, but is true he can be good.. with that being said we also have to have a true #1 as a number 2.. like peavy, cc, oswalt.. we can’t afford to go with pelfrey, maine (injury ? mark) niese and santana and maybe a scrao shoot pitcher like omar be getting.. wer need a frontline starter, a beast… WE NEED CC!!

      • Gina says:

I think he’s saying dropping that kind of money in FA is the only possible excuse they could have for going into the season with Niese as our best option for a #5 pitcher.

  18. dominicanboy08 says:

I think we need to sign k-rod and wood. I mean wood has dominant stuff. then trade a combination of heilman, scho, feliciano, sanchez, castillo, low prospects for a decent RF like Dye.

    • therealsince86 says:

Why would Wood come here to setup? You know Texas will offer him more money and years to close. Just does not make sense at all.

      • alex242 says:

texas for some reason likes fuentes a lot.. wood is not a priority on their list.

        • therealsince86 says:

From what I have read, Wood is one of their targets. However, it was said they may need to trade Blaylock to afford him. Besides, the Brewers, Tigers and Indians all need closers but most likely can’t afford Krod or Fuentes.

        • alex242 says:

i know woods is hurt most of the time, but i’m amazed at how a guy who’s lost his closer job TWICE (in colorado of all places) is demanding 13 millions a year???!!!!!… wow.. that to me is a lil weird..

      • dominicanboy08 says:

how do you know texas will offer him more more money? will he play for a second divsion team or a contender like the mets? you never know……

        • therealsince86 says:

Seriously? You don’t think the Mets will offer him 8-10 million a year to setup do you?
I would guess the Rangers will at least go 2/20 that’s just not going to happen with the Mets for a setup man.

        • alex242 says:

The real.. texas is not that high on him.. and i believe we can give him 2 years to be here in a winning enviroment. or at least till the last day of the season..

    • alex242 says:

dominican boy k lo k, happy holidays mi pana, i’ve said that before 2, but ppl prefer cruz coz he’s chepaer.. like we’re the kansas city royals and we need to have a budget..

  19. mark4212 says:

Why is everyone so upset about Easily. He is actually going to get a multi year offer, most likely form Arizona. He’s a decent player, he gets hurt every year. We can move on from him.

Alaya i wouldn’t mind, but he would accept arbitration, and the Mets would be stuck with another Arm in the Pen.

As for the guys mentioned to be dealt. The only reason i think Minaya didn’t do the Heilman & Feliciano for Street, is because he wants to see what the market is for Heilman. He has already been named in that deal, and now a deal with Texas.

Once the winter meetings are over i think there will be 2 or 3 spots in the bullpen the Mets will look to fill.

I don’t know where this idea of Loogy’s and Roogy’s being so important came from. Yes come playoff time you want a guy to get out one hitter. That’s playoff time. For the 162 game regular season, if you can’t get out righties at all i don’t want you on this team, and vice versa. You have no use to the team, and you can be a Post-season call-up. You shouldn’t be a major leaguer if you can’t get out both sides of the plate. Sorry!

    • therealsince86 says:

Agree in part on the ROOGY LOOGY. I think there is room for 2 of those in a 7 man pen. Not 5 like we had last year.

I don’t think Easley at 39 will get a mulitiyear deal.

Noting wrong with Ayala being the 6th inning guy but if they think they can find better so be it.

I think the Mets think they can get Street for Heilman and lower guy. I am sure that if the Rockies said take it or leave it today then the Mets would jump.

  20. cvarano6790 says:

i would offer arb to ayala, he’s proven in the past he could be a quality 7th inning guy who doesnt walk anybody and if he doesnt take it we can focus on juan cruz for the 7th inning

  21. alex242 says:

look, my opinion has always been to get k-rod.. we almost got him, now we need somebody to not only set him up but in situation can close as well, somone like wood, street, putz… then we get the rest of the guys battled it out.. ayala, smith, feliciano, stokes for the 6th and 7th inning.. that’s it.. our bullpen will be good (at least on paper) and if we’re thinking niese as a 5th starter we better have 2 or 3 option available right away in case he fails (i.e penny, garcia, vasquez) becoz i for the life of me couldn’t bare to watch another outing by sosa, or lawrence, or lima.. with that said… LET’S GO METS!!!!!

  22. Elastic says:

Sign KRod and Hoffmann for setup. The Padres won’t offer arby to Hoffmann so he wont cost us any picks. A two year deal for Hoffmann would suffice.
