News: Braves on Verge of Acquiring Vazquez
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 2, 2008 6:16 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com, the Braves are on the verge of acquiring Javier Vazquez from the White Sox.

Rosenthal believes the White Sox will get up to three players, including Braves SS Brent Lillibridge, but not Jo-Jo Reyes.

Update6:50 pm

Rosenthal now writes, “The Braves have reached an agreement with the White Sox,” which will send Vazquez and Boone Logan to the Braves for Lillibridge, a young starting pitcher and possibly Single-A C Tyler Flowers.

better them than us – he will be shellaced down in atlanta – he will give up more homers there than heilman

    • brapp says:

Vasquez is a little better than your making him out to be. He was awesome in 2007 and was pretty solid in 2008. He is better than anything the mets have other than santana. I love Maine and pelf but his body of work outshines both of those guys. His numbers will get better by getting out of Chicago and coming to the NL. At the worst I think he would be a good 4 or an excellent 5th starter. He is exactly the kind of guy the mets need. He strikes guys out and pitches over 200 innings every year. At 11.5m he’s a pretty good deal. I think he’s gonna be pretty good for the braves.

    • kingman 26 says:

I agree there Rusty…Vasquez is so-so at best…..glad to see him not be a Met. We’ll bomb him like Carrie Fisher bombed Elwood’s apartment….

  2. ho-go says:

    Agreed. He’s a bum.

If he’s their number 1 or 2, they’re in some kind of trouble.

  3. ugbmets21 says:

its unbelievable how they trade for starting pitching over the years while omar is still mulling over what direction he wants to go in FA.

if we dont get a pitcher of the level of vasquez or better this will be another failure. ughhh!

    • CitizenSnips says:

Good news. I just got off the phone with Omar and told him what you said. He apologized and will sign tons of free agents tomorrow.

  4. ugbmets21 says:

im not saying vasquez is anything special because hes not, but i am getting little worried of what our offseason plan is.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

agreed. is vasquez an ace? of course NOT. is he a serviceable 4th or 5th starter on a contender, yes. Im not saying we need him in particular but we could definitely use a guy like him.

    • stillbelieve says:

dude relax. omar will get some stuff done.
you guys all want everything done yesterday. things take time.

  5. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

My guess is that the Braves sent over Rohrbough, Lillibridge and Medlen.

The Mets would have to part with Kunz, Mejia and another prospect to top or match that, which I’m sure would turn the Mets off.

    • Gina says:

Kunz and Meija doesn’t sound like a very bad deal for Vazquez. It sounds like steal for us.

      • brapp says:

I think that’s a pretty good deal for vasquez. If it would have only cost the mets those 2 guys I would have jumped at it.

      • Bacons says:

Are you kidding, I seriously hope that was a joke. Vazquez is 33 years old, a choker and average.

You probably never watched Jenry Mejia pitch, because this kid reminds me alot of Edinson Volquez. He throws a 92-96 mph fastball and he can touch 97 at age 18, he has a good circle-change up and a very good power curveball.

        Insane.

        • brapp says:

How many guys have the mets drafted who were supposed to be the next big thing. Who knows, the kid might turn out to be great. But he’s pitching in the minors and is 18 years old. Do we get better now or do we wait 3 or 4 years for this kid to maybe make the majors. As a fan I’m all about today and now. If we have minor leaugers who are close to helping the major league team I’m all for keeping them. But to hold onto a kid who usia far away I think is crazy if you can make the team better now. Who knows what this kid will be?

  6. NYCESQ says:

This is an interesting deal. From what I gather, Atlanta had not been linked to Vasquez. This should teach people not to freak out about what they hear or don’t hear Omar is doing.

At least we know that if the Sox and Mets are linked, it will be for Dye or Jenks.

  7. This move does not worry nor scare me ..Im actually aiming far higher than Vazquez…I honestly hope Ollie comes back ..and we sign a Sheets/Penny or trade for Marquis ….

  8. ugbmets21 says:

explain to me why you want a guy like Marquis who the cubs, a contender, doesn’t want?

higher is signing a lowe, burnett, cc…which we are being cheap and will not do.

with the new stadium i just pose the question why not?

    • brapp says:

Marquis might be available if they can pull the trigger on the peavy deal. They also have sean Marshall who they would like to give an oppurtunity to start if they don’t get peavy. They like Marshall and he’ll cost almost nothing compared to the almost 10 million dollars that marquis is owed. I know the cubs are looking for a lefty bat and would probally like the payroll flexibility. I also heard that the cubs may be willing to eat a few million bucks to make him easier to move. If he was cheap and didn’t cost us anything decent I think he’s a pretty good number 5 guy. I could see him filling in as a Steve trascel type. Maybe you hope you can get a little something extra out of the guy by him being in a contract year and being able to come back home.

    • Gland says:

the white sox are contenders. they didn’t want vasquez

      • Gina says:

They’re also supposedly trying to completely rebuild their team and get younger and faster or something.

  9. Gina says:

Depending on what they gave up good move for the Braves. If they can add another top starter in either FA or through another trade they could be a serious contender, for the division, next year.

    • actually they need to adress they’re OF problems after they get their pitching straight.

      • Gina says:

Why? It didn’t hurt their offense last year and they had one of the best defensive outfields in the majors. Plus they have ten thousand outfield prospects. The only real problem they had last season was pitching. They certainly don’t have many more question marks than we do. And they have more pieces to make moves.

  10. enut says:

All I know is that Vazquez was CLUTCH under pressure when the Soz needed him…

  11. bigchart333 says:

i really wanted javy vazquez for a number of reasons. 1) pitchers usually do better in the NL, so we coulda looked for him to rebound 2) rumors were the sox MAY HAVE taken castillo and prospects 3) he is good for about 200 innings and K’s every year 4) by trading for him, we save our “type a free agent” limit in tact 5) not a long commitment to a pitcher on our part

those of you saying he’s a bum, well he might not be a #2 starter, but he’s def not a bum. He would have fit well with this team, especially if we re-signed ollie.

I mean, i know everyone loves him, as do i, but john maine is NO sure thing. He pitches like 5, 6 innings a start and is coming off surgery, albeit not a typical pitcher’s surgery, but still…TRADING for javy and signing another pitcher gives us depth and lets guys like Niese, Vargas, Holt, etc, more time to blossom…

this is a bad sign for the mets…he shoulda been in queens this season

    • CaseStreet says:

I’m very disappointed by this trade. I was hoping for that Castillo-Vasquez trade also not only because of Castillo but because Vazquez is a 200 innings guy with a very high strikeout ratio.

      • kingman 26 says:

Well Case, your Delgado-for-Putz idea is still possible…let’s hope Omar announces it right after they present Tex to the media!! Then we will certainly both be very happy.

        • CaseStreet says:

I thought you’d only be happy if they presented Ibanez with a key to the city.

        • kingman 26 says:

LOL! That is actually very good….

As I have said though, I prefer Manny in left for 3 years, or Tex at first and you sending Delgado to the M’s for Putz.

And I would also like Dunn if he isn’t demanding 10+ mil a year for 5-8 years. 3/30 for Dunn I take over Ibanez.

But if none of that happens, yes, a shiny key to Flushing for Raul would indeed in my opinion be our very next best choice for another bat.

          AFTER Manny, Tex and Dunn.

    • mark4212 says:

Well if the mets were to trade for Vasquez you can bet that Niese would have been included in the deal. Along with others. The White Sox wouldn’t have taken Castillo and 2 bums.

So then your trading your “possible” rotational Depth for one spot. While I’m all for trading for guys, i don’t want to be stuck in the same position the Mets were last year. With nobody with “Upside” to call up in case of injury.

The Deal for Marquis mentioned was perfect. You trade nothing, and get a 5th starter, who’s an innings eater. I don’t know if there was any legs to that deal.

If your ticked for any reason, it should be because Omar already said no to moving Feliciano and Heilman for Street. If the Rumored deal for Marquis was true. I’d be scared. 3 relievers everyone wants gone, and a bum pinch hitter for a Great 26 year old Relief arm….and a 5th starter.

  12. vikdeen says:

excellent deal for the braves. Doesn’t sound like they gave up much for him. He’ll post an ERA less than 4 and give you around 220 strikeouts in the NL. Wish the met could have gotten him, considering what the braves gave up.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

220 strike outs? come on only tim lincecum had more than 220 this year in the NL. sabathia finished with more too but started in the AL so im not counting that.

  13. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Someone hand the Braves a fleece. Flowers will definitely be a very good hitter.

    • bigchart333 says:

lillibridge is supposed to be a very good prospect too…they were probably better off giving up those 2 and yunel and jo jo for peavy

      • Gina says:

Flowers is about to turn 23 and only A+. Plus he’s going to be blocked forever at catcher. Fwiw Baseball prospectus had him as thier 8th best prospect and didn’t have Lillibridge in their top 11. Lillibridge basically had done nothing above A ball and he’s 25.

  14. CaseStreet says:

I say we one up the Braves and trade for Peavy. What are the chances of that happening?

  15. oleosmirf says:

this is great news for Mets fans. The thought of Vasquez on the mound for us in a big spot was killing me.

  16. mistermet says:

    Braindead Caribbeans (Omar)

    • cleonsvan says:

On the contrary, Omar should be commended for not bringing this loser back to NY. And frankly your bigoted comments only goes to show who really is brain dead here.

  17. mistermet says:

Guess Omar is too busy hammering out 2-year deals for Pedro, Alou. The offseason of disgust continues. Let’s give Clown Omar another extension. Joke.

  18. Gland says:

i guess this shows why we shouldn’t believe every rumor that gets posted. vasquez coming back for castillo sounded great. but for three prospects, not as much

  19. cleonsvan says:

Some people here seem to forget this bum already has a NY track record – and it wasn’t pretty. He’s already proven he can’t perform under the pressure and lights of NY. And he definitely wasn’t worth a couple of our young pitching prospects. Take a breath people and be relived Omar didn’t trade for him.

  20. mistermet says:

Los Mets are asleep at the wheel, as usual. I guess Garland or Wolf will be our big move this year. Putrifying.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i actually do get a kick out of some well played los mets jokes. but it is kind of funny how you say los mets then mention jon garland and randy wolf who are white american ballplayers.

  21. mistermet says:

… While the Yankees are going to get either Sabathia or Texeira plus 2 out of 3 of Burnett, O. Hudson…and maybe Lowe and/or Manny too. And oh yeah the Mets might get Gerald Laird.

  22. sanderson13 says:

blahblahblah he’s a bum blahblahblah couldn’t handle NY blahblahblah

Seems like a good deal for the Braves to me. Vazquez should do fine in the NL/Atlanta’s park, leaving the AL Central and the ChiSox stadium.

Sign Wood and Fuentes and Dunn and IreallyDon’tKnowWhichStarter, Omar!

  23. mistermet says:

Offseason continues to be a running joke, going by what you hear. Yet you people will defend this bad GM and cheap owner to the death.

    • Gland says:

‘going by what you hear’. yes, basing your comments on bs newspaper rumors is a good idea. if we did that castillo was traded for vasquez. oh, wait….

    • MudvilleNine says:

Who’s defending Omar? We’re all just calling you a nutcase without a clue.

  24. shannon says:

    WAKE UP, OMAR.

  25. mistermet says:

    Dear apologists:

Wake up and complain about our filthy rich owners and their small market mentality. Are you satisfied with a payroll that will be roughly 1/2 of the Yankees? Shouldn’t our payroll be at least 75% of what theirs is, with all our riches? No reason it can’t be. Oh yeah, we have Freddie. Guess its Randy Wolf or bust!

    • kingman 26 says:

      Dear Racist Ignoramus–

We had the 2nd or 3rd highest payroll last year, and will again this year….you recently compared us to AZ, and our payroll was TWICE theirs last year. Saying we have a small market mentality is about as accurate as saying a single post of yours is intelligent.

The offseason just started, and Vasquez is a so-so innings eater and nothing more.

Overpaying for everyone a la the Yanks is not the answer. Watch them finish 3rd again next year while we are in the postseason.

  26. mistermet says:

Even Fuentes is too rich for their blood, and I don’t want K-Rod anyway- his arm will fall off within 1.5 years.

  27. mistermet says:

Vazquez has a great WHIP, even for the AL. In the NL, his WHIP would be right around 1.05-1.10, with a K/9 around 9. But I guess we’ll resign Pedro. Idiots.

    • oleosmirf says:

but he wont do that in NY

    • mark4212 says:

That’s funny. I believe he did play for 6 years in the NL. And he finished with an ERA in that range hmmmmmmmm ONCE.

      He will go 15-10 with a 3.8 era a 1.2 whip and a BAA of 240ish.

Again he’s a solid middle rotation guy. he’s not the Savoir. And if it took a top 10 prospect and Castillo i would have done it.

  28. enut says:

Vazquez could not handle pressure situations in Chicago, what makes you think he could handle a Wednesday Day game in NY?

    Don’t forget his 6.25 September ERA;

    September 18th: 3.2IP 6H 6ER 2HR vs.NYY
    September 23rd: 4IP 7H 5ER 1HR vs. MIN
    September 27th: 4.1IP 5H 7ER 1HR vs. CLE
    Playoffs: 4.1IP 8H 6R 6ER 2HR

After 2 straight September collapses Omar did the right thing. The only thing is that this deal will look much better for the Braves because Atlanta is not a high pressure situation and Turner Field is a good pitchers park.

    • cleonsvan says:

Agreed. So what if he’s good for the Braves. They will not be a factor in the NL east this year.Patience people.

      • Gina says:

Why not? Their offense is was nearly as good as ours their problem was pitching. If they can bring in another front line starter what’s going to stop them?

        • kingman 26 says:

A rotation of Vasquez, Jurrjens, Campillo and JoJo Reyes is good with one more frontline pitcher? Isn’t Hudson out till mid-year? They will finish 4th.

        • Gina says:

It’s better than what we have now. And about as good as what the phillies have.

    • enut says:

Also, recall that Vazquez didn’t get a sniff of a playoff inning during the Sox 2005 championship season, plus Jo-Jo looked like a stud in the minors especially as a lefty — not worth $11 mil

  29. stemog1 says:

Omar will pull off one unexpected major move like he did last winter when there was no way we were getting Santana. Not sure what that will be, but it will be a shocker.

    • Gina says:

Considering there were reports nearly every day about us and Santana in here was it really a shocker?

      • methead says:

actually yes it was. We gave almost nothing for him when it seemed as if it was a sure thing he was going to the Yankees.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

you were shocked when the mets got santana? there were 3 teams he was going to, he went to one of those 3 teams. not exactly shocking. And what other shocking big moves has omar made? not saying he hasnt made big moves but how many of them are really that shocking?

    • brapp says:

I like omar but he has to stop getting all the credit for the santana deal. He was smart by not including reyes or pelfrey in a deal. But if it wasn’t for the red sox and the Yankees bailing out, we would have had no shot what so ever of seeing santana in a met uniform.

      • therealsince86 says:

We don’t know that. Omar could have included Fmart and it might have swung the deal in our favor either way.

        • brapp says:

Even with fmart, the rumored offers that the Yankees and red sox were offering were still better than what the mets had on the table.

  30. zen says:

niese better not be the opening week 5th starter

    • The Slider says:

If he is, it’s because he’s better than the other options. He does have a nasty curveball. If he can show some command of his pitches, I think he could be pretty good.

  31. dominicanboy08 says:

this is not good, who’s gonna get castillo now?

    • kingman 26 says:

Unfortunately, it appears that the right side of the Citifield infield will get him…..

    • CaseStreet says:

How about KC? They offered Grudzy arb. so it seems they would be willing to pay somewhere near Slappy’s salary for a 2B. Who could we get in return?

  32. So i was just talking to some Braves fans, they’re not all that happy about Vazquez lol

  33. by the way, im watching something on channel 41 about Abiorix Burgos and what happened there. According to Burgos, his cousin was driving the car and he hit the motorcycle of the two ladies. Abiorix was in the back seat of the car with his girlfriend. I don’t believe him because he’s speaking with a little grin on his face…

    • stickguy says:

given the country it is in, I am sure that a little cash under the table and the details can be worked out. Cousing spends a couple years in the pen (and so does Burgos!!)

      • RodKanehl says:

You are as disgusting as the Mets fraudulent front office. Besides his home troubles thus Met man is a also awaiting trial for eating his girlfriend in Queens. You have to be a truly pathetic and sick type of person to make light of such things.

  34. stickguy says:

I wanted vazquez, but only if he came cheap in prospects. So, without knowing what the mets were asked for (or offered), hard to say if Omar should have done it.

but I have to bet the Sox gave him a chance to beat the braves deal!

I am actually OK with the Marquis deal too, if it really is for spare parts (whatever that ends up being). Someone mentioned Schoe + something marginally useless, and I am fine with that.

Marquis would also be perfectly fine as the #5. does pitch plenty of innings, and better than a Garland at 4/40+

Actually, did Blanton get offered arb? is he a free agent? Not that he is really any good, but if he was available, probably better than Garland.

Wolf would be OK instead of Marquis too, on a st deal.

anyhow, if they got Marquis, sign one more SP (sheets if you want to roll the dice, Lowe I don’t like at the numbers (age/year/salary), AJ will also be a risk, CC is a pipe dream. and dont say pedro!

Ollie or Sheets? But if they got Marquis, he needs to be 5 with neise #6.

Man, this is why you have to keep SP prospects and let them develop (even in the majors, rotation or pen). Another reason that Neise as the #5 isn’t a terrible idea. He could also be very useful in the pen for 1 year.

    • Coolpapabell says:

Stick, I am p-issed man. I thought Vazquez would be the perfect lego piece for the rotation. We need to start reading reports of Omar contacting Ben Sheets’ agent. Wolf and sheets puts a smile back on my face…………until then, Harumph!

By the way………I don’t want to hear any “Sheets is such a big injury risk, blah blah blah”. The reality is that Lowe is either going to be a Redsox or a Yankee, CC will not be a Met and Burnet will either be a Jay, Yankee, Brave, or Oriole. Omar has already balked at Lowe’s price tag, and I am sure he will not go the five years Burnet is looking for. Burnet doesn’t seem to want to pitch for us gauging by the comment made by his agent, so that leaves us with what? I think if things swing our way Lowe could be had, but it going to take some luck. Get Sheets. From what I have read, its going to take three years.

    • therealsince86 says:

Of course we all know I wanted Vasquez. However, Marquis makes too much sense. Short term innings eating guy that can go from the #5 spot. Trade them Show and Marlon and that gets us him for 5 million but still saves the Cubs 5 million. Throw in a low level prospect for the Cubs to make more sense.
Then at that point based on what’s left between Ollie, Sheets and Wolf I guess I would go with Ollie 1st with 4/44 tops. Then if not Sheets at 3/36 then Wolf 2/22. Maybe there are still a few guys out there to trade for. Maybe Texas?

  35. mistermet says:

Freddie Coupons. 2nd or 3rd highest payroll is NOT acceptable when it’s 1/2 of what the Yankees’ payroll is. How can anyone defend this.

    • rustyjr says:

mrmet we had a payroll of over 130 mill last year – yeah ive been guilty of calling fred that too but he has spent money when push has come to shove

  36. Bravesfan11 says:

I’m a Braves fan and I really like the deal. The Braves seem to be good at giving up guys who have great trade value but don’t seem to do much with other teams. Vazquez isn’t going to blow anybody away with his stuff but he will definitely benefit from a move to the National League and more of a pitchers park. The main thing is tell any Braves fan that had to watch Hampton, Glavine, and Smoltz slowly fall apart last year that the Braves are getting a basically guaranteed 200+ innings from an around 4.00 ERA pitcher, they’ll LOVE it.

    • Coolpapabell says:

You should be happy. Vazquez does have very good stuff but poor comand. You can’t have a high strike out rate if you don’t have good stuff. He lets up a lot of HRs because he is an extreme fly ball pitcher………..so I think the Ted will be perfect for him. Comiskey is a hitters park so he suffered. Not to mention he will not have to face the DH now. I am getting very angry now.

What the heck Omar, what the heck! I really thought he would really bolster the Mets rotation.

      • Coolpapabell says:

I at least Peavy won’t be wearing a Braves uniform.

        • rustyjr says:

true true hey u know Smoltz is available maybe if we plug him into the closer role – uhh nevermind – momentary lapse of reason

      • therealsince86 says:

If this deal was for JoJo and SS Brent Lillibridge then you are talking a Niese, Evans trade at least. I love me some Vasquez but is he worth that?

  37. mistermet says:

Randy Wolf and Gerald Laird or bust for the small market Mets! Pathetic.

    • Coolpapabell says:

I don’t think we have enough for Laird. I think the Rangers are going to be unreasonable. Wolf is a must(I might be a bit irrational after this trade).

    • cleonsvan says:

Just what this site needs – another small minded, angry, phony contrarian out to get himself some negative attention he obviously doesn’t get anywhere else in his life….I do hope its an act, even though you do it badly – because if these are your true feelings I feel very sorry for you.

      • rustyjr says:

hey cleon i hope that wasn’t directed towards me? i’m a die hard fan – and frustrated but that will never keep me from rooting for my team GO METS !!!

        • cleonsvan says:

no rusty – hey if you’re a Met fan how can you not be frustrated?
just commenting about the long list of negative comments earlier in this thread posted by somebody disparaging the good name of our beloved mascot…

        • kingman 26 says:

Yeah Rusty–this mistermet clown is clearly after Furioso’s spot as High Priest of the Holy Trinity of Met Schmucks….

  38. rustyjr says:

i read the interview with jeff wilpon about the naming rights for citi field – damn he coulda won the Monty Python’s Twit Of The Year award lol

  39. rustyjr says:

guys got this from the n.y post
He’s trying to get some things [in place] so he’s ready when we get to the winter meetings and can go from there,” Wilpon said of Minaya.
“we get to the winter meetings??!!!) so much for omars autonomy – maybe he can throw a roll of quarters in to the casino area and have jeff chase it – u know play the slots or they can dump him at the buffet at the rio or vince neils tatoo shop where he can have jeff and tom glavine 4ever inked in his shoulder lol

    • MookieRules says:

Um…by “we” I think he means, you know, the Mets. The team he owns. Relax, I don’t think he’s seizing the reins away from Omar at the winter meetings. I’ve never seen so much meaning read into a pronoun before.

  40. therealsince86 says:

What about trading for one of the Pirates starters to be our #5? We have been interested in Snell before. He had a terrible year last year so his value should be low.

    • stickguy says:

Snell is an interesting piece. And it is possible for pitchers with talent to rebound from a bad year and post a big year the next.

Look at what’s Cliff Lee (?) on Cleveland (won the Cy Young). Didn’t he stink in 2007 (get sent down, etc.) and even in ST 2008 he was supposedly on the block, getting dumped, etc.

Not that Snell is going to do that, but he could easily pull an Ollie in a new situation and reclaim the talken he showed before.

If gotten cheapish, I take a chance on him. Not much to lose.

I am still thinking more and more Sheets is the big SP to get, and Wolf would be fine to pair with him. Or Marquis. Either on as the 5th starter will give some stability. Snell could fill that role too, or slot into the pen as a long/swing guy.

    • CaseStreet says:

Snell def has the talent, I’ve had him on my fantasy team and have tracked him for a while. I’d welcome Snell and give him Ibanez’s key to the city (sorry kingman).

The Radio stations down here are poo pooing this trade as it looks like the Braves gave up Flowers, which most fans don’t really like…On the other hand all anyone down here can talk about is football so I guess nobody really cares…Go Gators.
