Buzz: Mets and White Sox talking Dye, Jenks
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 3, 2008 2:48 pm

In his latest rumor-mill round up, citing ‘whispers, at Baseball Prospectus, John Perrotto suggests the Mets and White Sox could be discussing a deal that could send OF Jermaine Dye and RHP Bobby Jenks to the Mets for OF Fernando Martinez and others.

a deal between the Mets and Sox involving dye and jenks may have been true once before…however, from what i can gather, the Mets are more focused on Huston Street, since they match up better with the Rockies…plus, i believe he will cost less

…as for dye, i have no idea if he’s a realistic option, but, as i have said before, he’d be a pretty good fithowever, trading martinez to get him would cancel out one of the reasons, i.e., a short-term solution, which makes dye appealing

Last week, at FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal wrote that the Mets have been looking for a right-handed bat.

“On Tuesday, Nov. 11, several White Sox officials watched Mets pitching prospects Bobby Parnell and Eddie Kunz pitch in the Arizona Fall League,’ reported the Chicago Tribune.

According to Gonzales, citing two NL scouts, the Sox were scouting players for deals that include Dye, who hit .292 with 34 HR, 96 RBI and a .344 OBP in 154 games last season.

Dye will earn $11.5 million in 2009, after which he has a mutual option in 2010 for $12 million, or a $1 million buyout that could make him a free agent.

On Nov. 18, I wrote, “From what I can gather, the Mets are likely to make a trade for a relief pitcher, who has experience as a closer,” in addition to signing either Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes or Kerry Wood.”

    Never!

    Sign Tex!

    • alex242 says:

LOL…case.. i think our efforts will be worthless!!!!!!

      • CaseStreet says:

        You Gotta Believe Alex!

        • alex242 says:

I DO!!! i just put my pieces together and i came to the conclusion that if we do that trade it will help us to get a front line pitcher and trade that guy we got at first so when the winter meeting starts we go to boras and say:”WE WANT #25!!”

        • starz31 says:

meaning go sign a front line pitcher? theoretically, it would provide money to spend on SP and then you’re man-crush.

        • alex242 says:

LOL.. starz31.. i think i do have a crush on #25.. i’d be prottling like a lil girl!!! lol..

        • starz31 says:

although, Dye would cost 1-3$ mil less than Krod would. krod would be locked up longer. But using that logic, they would still need to spend additional money to go and acquire Tex after getting a SP. I would love to see Tex hitting bombs into our RF over-hang, but I don’t see us getting into a bidding war over him.

  2. Not going to happen…..

  3. Lightweis says:

Replace Jenks with Danks, and you got yourself a deal.

  4. HOFMets57 says:

I’d do Dye and Jenks for F-Mart straight up!

  5. yosi says:

Care to provide a little more insight than just what was given at MLBtraderumors.com?

    • That is all they have ….not much of a rumor if you ask me…I highly doubt this will happen..or is even close….why put this out there a day after the Braves/Sox deal?? I guess Omar wants us to have hope ,but our only big move will be signing KROD

  6. bennyagbayani says:

No way this is true. Dye’s got a year left and we’re gonna offer f-mart?? no no no

  7. alex242 says:

your missing the most important point in most omar’s transaxtions:

    DYE is 36… PERFECT!!!!

  8. kpignetti says:

    get it done!!!

  9. zen says:

    re-post :)

    santana
    peavy (for f-mart, murphy, other)
    pelfrey
    maine
garland, lowe, ollie, or penny (1 year deal max)

    k-rod
    street (for heilman, feliciano)
    smith
    sanchez
    schoenweis
    stokes

    reyes, ss
    baldelli, lf
    wright, 3b
    beltran, cf
    delgado, 1b
    church, rf
    schneider/castro, c
    castillo, 2b

    • yosi says:

F-Mart, Murphy and another is not enough for Peavy. I’d do it, but its not close to enough.

      • zen says:

i think when we see the final deal ofr peavy it won’t be a better package.

though i’m sure the padres want a young pitcher back. best the mets can do is joe smith.

    • alex242 says:

wow.. i’m shocked you still want peavy.. he’s good but he wouldn’t wanna pitch here.. too much pressure for him..

    • x-nady says:

Highly Doubt that would get Peavy.

Plus, that leaves only one Lefty in the Pen with Show. I would think we would need at least one other effective lefty Reliever.

Baldelli is a nice story, but would also be another question mark in the lineup that has the question mark of Church, Castillo, Schneider and even Delgado. We need a bona-fide thumper in LF.

  10. starz31 says:

Don’t know what to think of this one…Aren’t the sox looking for a bat and pitcher for 2009 now that they didn’t really get one in the Vazquez deal(emphasis on 2009). I don’t know if Fmart gives them that. what else could be in the package?

It’s tough to swallow another aging bat. I’d rather see Fmart in a trade for a younger bat. Jenks is young, cheap, and effective.

  11. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

And…why wouldn’t we just throw some cash at K-Rod?

Until the Krod domino falls I don’t believe any of these rumors.

    • starz31 says:

With the vegas meetings less than a week away, I don’t see how we trade for Jenks before even talking to Krod.

      • alex242 says:

becaus by then we can shift the focus to tradin that guy we got at first and start the bidding for #25…. YES!!

  12. mistermet says:

The guys at Baseball Prospectus never get it right. The only worse site is Gotham Baseball.

    • I think, as with all publications, that it depends more on the writer. Will Carroll of BP seems be reliable but I don’t know much about John Perrotto, etc.

  13. steadyeddie says:

trade talented youth for washed up gizzer….
    same Omar
    different year
man, oh man, is this routine gettin’ “old”
    pun intended…

  14. ruiz2k5 says:

If this happens I will ask for Minaya’s head……wait can I say that?

  15. wadehead9 says:

First ever post on The Blog. *Cracks open some bubbly*

Dye and Jenks for FMart and some pieces?

Not sure how I feel about that. I would not be excited to see just how many prospects it would take to get both Dye and Jenks. Including FMart would certainly reduce the total amount of players, but I’m not sold on this idea. I’m not against trading FMart, but for an aging outfielder making too much money, and an overrated “Closer” doesn’t sit well with me.

While Dye is a solid bat, I’d prefer the Mets use FMart for someone younger with better defensive abilities – maybe a guy like Kemp. Jenks, to me, is totally overrated. His K rate is abysmmal for a Closer, and from what I had been reading, the Sox’s perceived value of him is way too high.

I’d like the Mets to sign Wood to close, add another FA bullpen arm (Beimel or Cruz), and use Delgado to get another 7th/8th inning releiver and a bench guy. (Heilman and Feliciano/Schoe I’d like to package into a 5th starter – Edwin Jackson or someone young with potential) I’m also a little concerned how the Mets’ bench is going to look this year. It was not a strong point of the club as it was in recent years.

After those bullpen fixes, I’d go all out for Teixeria. He is, by far, the biggest impact player in the market this year. Argueably, he is the biggest FA in the past three+ years (Arod doesn’t count because his economics make no sense for any team).

Finally, if the Mets are seriously in on Jenks, and Wood doesn’t work out, they can go after Jenks at next year’s trade deadline.

    • starz31 says:

first post is the hardest…now comes hours of procrastination and ineffectiveness at work.

      • CaseStreet says:

hours? more like weeks or months.

        • starz31 says:

          you’re right…i meant daily though…lol.

        • wadehead9 says:

Yeah, I already have been on here wasting time just reading posts from other people. I figured it about time I start to weigh in considering I watch 125+ Mets games a year and check ESPN, MLB.com, and this blog about 40x each every day.

Besides, it’s very entertaining playing Mets GM.

  16. metsfan575715 says:

i would not give up f-mart for dye and jenks. I say take out jenks and add alexi ramirez and we could add another prospect. We will get a very good second basemen and a right ahnded power outfield bat that we desperatly need.

    • starz31 says:

can’t really argue against alexi, he’s a star in the making. but he also is about to become their starting SS next season and is their prized young jewel…It’d be tough to acquire him.

  17. dominicanboy08 says:

I only want dye, k-rod is better than jenks and wont cost us f-mart.
evans, kunz a low prospect for dye. thats it!!!

    • Coolpapabell says:

Agreed. You need to hold on to Fernando.

    • therealsince86 says:

That won’t get Dye. They want a top prospect for him. Fmart is too much thus the Mets say throw in Jenks then the Sox say throw in…..

      • Coolpapabell says:

Well, what happens to your OF in the long run? Dye has two year left and Church has one year left.

All their minor league talent is concentrated in the infield if you exclude F-Mart.

        • therealsince86 says:

You can find a OF I guess or maybe Murphy could do it. I would only do this if it allowed a big signing of a need like Tex. Not just to save money on Krod.

        • enut says:

Wonder if a package around Church just for Dye could happen, It would provide salary relief, an outfielder for 09 and the Mets get the much needed RH bat. I consider FMart untouchable unless it is for Peavy, Holliday, etc – basically for another ace, pitching wins

    • Gina says:

Even thats too much for Dye when the market has left fielders.

  18. mos1982 says:

Dont like the idea of trading Martinez for an older outfielder. I know we would get Jenks too but I want to eventually see Martinez playing a corner outfield spot for the Mets. The only way I would see this being OK is if Castillo can be thrown into the mix which would allow Omar to go after Orlando Hudson. I still wouldn’t like losing Fernando, but at least I would be getting a strong second baseman who will be around for a few years out of it.

  19. joeinorlando says:

sounds like a ploy to get krod to drop his price even lower

  20. Coolpapabell says:

F-Mart in exchange for Dye and Jenks……….I am not happy with what I am hearing.

  21. therealsince86 says:

Ok, play along. Just being devils advocate.
Suppose it was Fmart, lower prospects and CASTILLO for Dye, and Jenks.
That would cost us a net of 6 million.
    Closer and LF spot filled.
    Then sign Tex +20 million
Trade Delgado for a #5 starter -12 million
All that for 14 million added?
We would still need a starter and more bullpen but that’s not that hard to get. Sign Wolf and trade for Street.

    • starz31 says:

Giving up Fmart would be very easy to accept if we signed Tex, no question about it. Then getting a 35-year OF isnt too hard to swallow.
But, I just dont think Omar is going to go after Tex. I really don’t know. I feel like that would be the last part of the puzzle, and it may not be easy to put into place.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

There is one way to ensure the Mets get Tex: be the highest bidder. Tex is reported to be uber pro union, makes speeches to his teamates about always taking the money and chastises any fellow union member who doesn’t do so. Offer him the most money and unless he’s a complete hypocrite, he’s a Met.

      • This plans relies on trading Fernando, getting Dye, Jenks, trading Delgado, signing Teixeira, getting a setup man, signing 2 FA pitchers. Getting rid of Murphy/Evans.

I agree that would be an awesome plan but it also contains so many moving parts, it would be hard to pull off.

Any deal that solves one problem and creates another may be unlikely.

    • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

It looks OK from our perspective, but why would the Chi Sox take back Castillo when they are dumping deal? They don’t need to move Dye in a salary dump and Castillo is worthless.

      • therealsince86 says:

Shhh.. They do need a 2B. I guess in theory so they could net a top prospect like Fmart. But you are right that trade is Mets sided for sure. Maybe if we took back Contreras? Then I guess it would shift the other way so never mind.

        • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Yeah – one thing for 2b to consider – Brian Roberts is a FA next offseason….if they can find a one year stop gap type guy (not named Luis), Roberts would fit in so nicely on this team…

        • Just put him in the car with Fernando Martinez. They’ll have to take him.

  22. Kellman says:

This trade is awful. I’m pretty optimistic about the offseason as long as Omar does go and blow it by dealing with the White Sox. I don’t have a problem adding Dye at all. He’s a good player, albeit expensive/old, but would be a solid fit. I want no part of Jenks as a package deal with Dye though. The cost in prospects will be too harsh, and I prefer KRod to Jenks anyway. I don’t understand this love affair with trading for a closer when you have superior options on the market for nothing but money. It’s just a matter of time until Jenks wants his contract too… why not just give it to KRod and save your chips? Makes no sense.

Dye isn’t a necessity at all unless he is coming at a cheap price. The White Sox have a good team, they have little reason to deal him for salary relief. I like his RH bat in the lineup, but not if it costs the Mets Krod (for Jenks) and FMart+. Just sign KRod and go from there.

    • Kellman says:

Edit: I’m pretty optimistic about the offseason as long as Omar DOES NOT go and blow it by dealing with the White Sox.

    • therealsince86 says:

Some valid points but I don’t think Jenks is a FA for 3 more years.
The problem with just getting Dye is we don’t have that many middle prospects to give up. Thus they would ask for someone we consider too valuable for just Dye. That’s where Jenks comes in.

  23. alex242 says:

can you imaging omar saying ok, give me denks and i’ll give you castillo, f-mart, kunz and ike davis.. DONE..

    • starz31 says:

      no but I can see him saying…umm yea you know..ok, give me denks…you know..umm…and i’ll …you know…give you fmart and kunz…and you know…ike davis…and umm you know…consider it done.

  24. oc410 says:

How about Kunz Parnell and Heilman and ill do it. I like dye, but how many 35 and older players can we rely on. We need to get younger

  25. BullpenHelp says:

I keep asking… has anyone seen anything suggesting that Jermaine Dye is willing to waive his No Trade Clause to the Mets?

Secondly… has anyone seen anything suggesting that Peavy would waive his No Trade Clause to the Mets?

    • therealsince86 says:

No, but we have not seen anything saying they would not either. We have no idea. That does not mean that the Sox and Mets might not agree on a deal in principle. Most likely Dye would say yes IF you pick up my option year.

      • BullpenHelp says:

Well… they have their NTC’s for a reason. Peavy has made it pretty clear that he wants to go somewhere on his terms and pitching in the NY or Boston market is not his idea of fun.

And Jermaine Dye blocked out the Northeast for a reason. But I suppose it gives writers something fun to write about.

        • therealsince86 says:

Has it not already been rumored that Peavy would waive it for the Yankee’s?
And you have to wonder why Dye put those teams on there? It’s not like he is affraid of the cold or the big city.
A lot of times players put notrade clauses to big market teams because they know they could squeeze them for more money to waive the NTC.

        • starz31 says:

true, but the NTC could be years old by now…and was more of a preference type of thing…”let me choose where i want to go” not necessarily “i dont want to go there”

  26. alex242 says:

What kills me is that as we are on the midst of discussion to get an old outfielder the marlins are closing in on trading for JONATHAN SANCHEZ from the giants for 1 year wonder scrap shoot jorge cantu.. OMAR… are you reading newspaper e-mails something!!!!

    • therealsince86 says:

LOL and who would you suggest, even if that rumor were true at all, us trading for him? We don’t exactly have a Cantu lying around.

      • alex242 says:

agree but again..i don’t care.. but come on.. don’t we have a bunch of jo-jo reyes??? and look what happened!!! come on.. is time for this guy to do something!!! what is he waiting for???

    • starz31 says:

Yea I saw that before and though tthe same thing…but like thereal said, who are we gonna give up?

I would love Sanchez, and even more so if kept the Marlins from getting him. We already have one sanchez, why not get another one. cantu is decent though, and only 25 years old. obviously SanFran wants a bat they can use right away.

      • therealsince86 says:

Exactly. Murphy while we all love him is not the same as Cantu right now. Who does that leave? Fmart? That’s not what the Giants are looking for.

  27. alex242 says:

yeah i guess i’m just over reacting!! but then again we give delgado for something like that and make it quick!!! by dec 19 i want something donne coz i’m going to DR.. and if i see omar hasn’t done anything i’ll bi*** slap him myself at the airport!!

    • therealsince86 says:

That makes no sense. Big difference in Cantu and Delgado. LOL. No big name FA have been signed yet. Be patient Danielson.

      • alex242 says:

        the real,

i will.. i will celebrate like is 1999 once we get #25 ok.. thanks ..

        • therealsince86 says:

Agreed on celebrating if we get Tex. I just wish Omar thought the way we do (about Tex only) we are pretty messed up otherwise.

  28. Chris Alvino says:

I am all in favor of getting Dye, but not Jenks. I think he is overrated and will only regress from here on out.

By the way, can someone tell me why some people think, like Mike Francessa, that Carlos Delgado cannot get any good value back in a trade, but a guy like Dye can get back guys like Fernando Martinez, Homer Baily, etc.? Compare Delgado’s last 3 seasons with Dye’s last three seasons. Let me know what you think.

By the way, I do not want hear the argument that Dye is an outfielder and Delgado is a 1b. They are offensive players, and that is it. No one wants to deal for Dye for his stellar play in Chicago’s right field.

    • therealsince86 says:

I am guessing because Dye has 2 years cheap and is still a decent defender. I can see him getting a little more than Delgado but that being said, this year Delgado would have a lot of value.

    • kistics says:

I agree with you that Dye and Delgado should get similar value back.

As much as I would love to get Dye and Jenks, FMart and more would be giving up long term for short term. Especially when Dye would only be around for 1 year.

  29. Chris Alvino says:

Delgado will cost another team about 5 million more. If that is your argument, then I will buy that.

But in terms of offensive thump, I’ll take Delgado over Dye.

    • therealsince86 says:

? Delgado will cost .5 million more not 5 million.

      • Chris Alvino says:

        Sorry.

I thought he had a 16 million dollar option with a 4 million dollar buyout, meaning that Delgado will only cost us a net of 12 mill this year.

        I might be wrong.

        • Gina says:

Dye is making 11.5 million so it’s still only .5 more. Plus Dye has an option next year with a 1 million buy out I believe.

  30. sanderson13 says:

Why would the Sox do this? They’re not in rebuilding mode.

Martinez is very young and has hardly no minor league experience, right? Has BP or anybody else done MLE projections for him? I bet it’s too early for that.

And why would this deal be better for the Mets than signing Dunn and Wood (and Hoffman, what the heck), which would cost them no players or draft picks?

There’s more to this whisper than what we’ve read. Or it’s simply smoke and/or mirrors.

    • therealsince86 says:

Guessing just smoke but the trade cost us
      12 million.
Your plan cost us at least 30.

      • sanderson13 says:

And I’d be OK with that. ;-)

You don’t think the Mets would shy away from that amount of money, do you? I’d hope not. They already have their own network and are opening a new stadium. And Wilpon’s loaded.

If so, then I’d imagine you don’t want them to sign a top closer, set up man, and at least an “Ollie-level” pitcher, which is what Omar Minaya said his priorities are. Because that’s going to run you about 30. OK, say you trade for a setup guy with a smaller contract than what Hoffman would get, you’re going to have to trade SOMEBODY to get them, and the farm system is pretty bare right now. They could stand to keep their draft picks.

Again, anybody know if there are MLE projections for Fernando or which Major League player BP projects him to be like? It’s probably too soon, the kid can’t even buy Plaxico a drink yet. Oh no, I din’t!

    • Gina says:

The Sox actually are in a semi rebuilding mode. They apparently want to get younger and faster. The question is why would we even consider this when we can fill those holes through free agency without giving up anything.

  31. kistics says:

You guys probably have all discussed it above, but what do you guys think of the trade to get Jenks and Dye?

I think giving up FMart plus more would be giving up too much future. I really like to see Dye and Jenks in the Mets uniform, but the cost would be too much

  32. FSMetFan says:

all i know is if a trade went down where we acquired jenks and dye then the mets better make a big offer to CC and/or TEX

  33. phukthephills says:

how bout…parnell and kunz for jenks
    then sign krod/fuentes
and jenks can be the setup man

  34. Necciai27 says:

Honestly, as someone said earlier, I can’t even remember the last time Perotto got something right. If this was Will Carroll reporting it (you may recall him as the guy who broke the Willie firing), I’d be worried. He’s BP’s accurate guy. But Perotto generally presents out-of-date rumors that can literally be a week old.

    • Necciai27 says:

In fact, I just remembered the Perotto was the guy who kept insisting just a day or two prior to the Santana trade that we weren’t going to get him. And he was the only one on a national scale (vs. a local paper scale) who really seemed to keep trumpeting “the Mets will NOT get Santana!” literally until the day the transaction went down.

  35. Gina says:

This has to be a made up rumor. I can’t imagine our front office could actually be considering this. We’re going to give up our top prospect, plus other prospects for a 35 year old outfielder, a position we could easily fill in free agency with someone like Dunn or hell even Ibanez if they’re determined to fill it with someone old, and a closer when the market is flooded with closers?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

It’s pretty absurd, isn’t it? Jenks may be fading, and Dye is simply too old. You might not even get one good year. Plus, F-Mart’s value is down a bit. Just silliness.

  36. vic79 says:

The whole Jenks rumor makes sense but I think I rather have them just sign K-Rod as a FA instead of giving up Fmart

I like the idea of Baldelli in LF to platoon with Murphy

on the other hand if they can move Castillo with F-mart for Dye and Jenks then sign Hudson it makes sense

I don’t think this is feasible but

    Reyes
    Hudson
    Wright
    Delgado
    Beltran
    Dye
    Schneider/Castro

that would be insane…………….but not gonna happen, hah

  37. kevtrem says:

    Hey, I’m WhiteSox fan,

So Mets fans can you give me an insight on the Fmart and prospects that may be included if this deal goes down, like parnell kunz and murphy.

ps Jenks is a great dependable closer who is post season prove who wont cost the ex-twin(argghhh) Santana wins.

    and

Dye is a great player even though aging his bat has pop and as for defense its not his strong point, but he certainly isnt a liability

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Insight on Murphy and Martinez: they will not be wearing White Sox uniforms, so don’t worry about it.
