by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets announced today that they have signed Nelson Figueroa, Adam Bostick, infielder Andy Green, and catcher Rene Rivera to minor league deals.

Figueroa was 3-3 with a 4.57 ERA for the Mets last year.

Bostick had his season limited to 11 games after undergoing left knee surgery on May 27.  He was 2-2 with a 6.04 ERA in Triple-A last season.

Green, 31, spent all of last season in the minor leagues with the Mets and Reds.  He hit .331 with 10 doubles, two triples, eight HR and 28 RBI in 52 games with the Triple-A Zephyrs.

Rivera had been batting .227 with a .252 OBP in 53 major-league at bats with the Mariners.

say hello to another year of seeing figueroa as our starter.. JOB WELL DONE OMAR…

CitizenSnips December 3, 2008 at 3:54 pm

You do realize that minor league rosters need to be filled too, right?

The Slider December 3, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Hey, who needs Lowe or Vasquez or Burnett or Perez? We have Figueroa and the great Adam Bostick!

ruiz2k5 December 3, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Yes we found a closer!!!!!!!!

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:40 pm

i sense a disturbance in the sarcasm force

ksuth December 3, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Figgy started only a handful of games last year. Relax. That happens when you have pitching injuries. I like this move…

PedroMANIA December 3, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Decent depth moves

TheBigStapler December 3, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Gotta say, I love Nelson Figueroa. I hope we’re never at such dire straits in 2009 that we need him to spot start but I’m glad to have the guy in the system.

starz31 December 3, 2008 at 3:51 pm

At least we got younger we decide to carry 3 catchers on the team.

iluvbuckner December 3, 2008 at 4:03 pm

You do know what “minor leagues” means right?

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:41 pm

major leagues 3 back to the minors?

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 3:52 pm

My goodness the internet makes people jumpy. It’s not even the GM meetings and people are calling out Omar for not making moves and then calling him out for making the small moves that you have to make such as I don’t know fielding a team in AAA.

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

well when u see decent relievers gon ie howry and affeldt i guess we are entitled to have a stretch of chicken little in us

The Slider December 3, 2008 at 5:59 pm

I think we’re just a little bored with nothing better to do, so we’re having a little fun at Omar’s expense. I’m sure he can take it.

Hopefully, we’ll be kissing his a$$$ next week.

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 7:32 pm

if he gets us k-rod and amakes a blockbuster deal that was under the radar hell ill felate him lol

The Slider December 3, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Can I videotape it and put in on youtube? : ))))

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 3:52 pm

that’s all i think we’ll see this year.. he will sign k-rod late after pretty much everybody is taken then say: we focused on bullpen!!! F***!!!!!

50dollarsforabrick December 3, 2008 at 3:52 pm

World Series here we come. Omar you’ve done it!

iamatwork December 3, 2008 at 3:53 pm

What about Val Pascucci?

GravediggerHebner December 3, 2008 at 3:55 pm

LMAO!

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:43 pm

ima val pascucci amda herresa mi brotha guiseppe franco bah franabla to you too !!!

The Slider December 3, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Bellisima! Multo bene.

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 7:32 pm

gratsi gratsi !!

The Slider December 3, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Prego.

The Slider December 3, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Hey, if we curse in Italian, can we still get banned?

Snort-It-Like-Keith December 3, 2008 at 3:55 pm

lol who need Tex … Keith Hernandez is going to take over at first base in 2009!!!!

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 3:55 pm

I’d like omar to shut us up by doing something dramatic to make us go wow, for real here we come… we bashed him and i think he’s one of the worst GM but the advantage he has is the fact that the mets are willing to pay.. if not for that we’d be in big troubles… BIG..

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Yeah something like getting the best SP in the game when most thought we could not. Oh wait that was last year. Be patient.

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 4:02 pm

the real, don’t forget it was becoz inly us, the yankees and boston could afford him!! minnesotta needed to make that move, with that being said the advantage we have is the fact that we have money to sign players.. if not this guy would’ve been fired by now along wit willie..

darkstar73 December 3, 2008 at 4:07 pm

bottom line is, he got us the best pitcher in the majors!!! If anything, Omar can pull off the big moves, its the other stuff he he’s been bad at for 2 years now, the glue guys, role players, bullpen, those kind of moves. Omar will make some sort of big move, maybe 2 in the bullpen, but nothing is happening yet in the market, so he’s obviously weighing his options, using the fact that there are many options to his advantage, making the price come down (well, hopefully).

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Was that English. I can’t follow that at all.
But if you are using the tired excuse of the Yankee’s and Sox let us have Santana then I won’t even respond.
That’s like saying that if the Yankee’s did offer their package and got him that we could say well we let them have him because we did not trade Fmart and Pelfrey.

jaydh December 3, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Its just not true either. Theo said during ST last yr that they did make an offer for Santana but the Twins preferred what the mets were offering.

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Yup their offer was just never as high as what was reported. It was never both top prospects but one or the other.

mikey_FF December 3, 2008 at 4:15 pm

“But if you are using the tired excuse of the Yankee’s and Sox let us have Santana then I won’t even respond.”

…and then you continued to respond. Sorry thereal, just busting your chops. :)

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:17 pm

True, I’m a talker. LOL. Like you did not know that.

iluvbuckner December 3, 2008 at 4:05 pm

yeah cuz these little minor league deals to help out the entire franchise’s system just makes most blog readers think we’re rebuilding.

TheBigStapler December 3, 2008 at 3:55 pm

From the Fiueroas blog:

We walked over to the apple and Renee and Nelson said Good-bye to that. Then we drove home. On the way home Nelson said to me, “I’m sorry it took me so long to come out”. I told him it was fine and he said, barely above a whisper, with a crack in his voice, “I didn’t want to take the uniform off”.

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:53 pm

SHEA WHAAAAA!!!!

Fiya Minaya December 3, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Where would we be without such a cunning GM. He’s always somethodical in his depth moves! Jose Lima, Jeremy Gonzalez, Chan Ho Park, Brian Lawrence and Nelson Figueroa- all relied upon heavily the last three years to start games.

CaseStreet December 3, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Because we had three injured starters (Duque, Pedro and Maine)

mark4212 December 3, 2008 at 4:54 pm

And teams like the Yankee’s and Red Sox were relying on Bartolo Colon, a hand full of rookies. Carl Pavano, Darryl Rasner.

This is why you can’t trade all your prospects every year. Then you have no organizational Depth. You (not particularly, but Met Fans overall) kick and scream when you see Atlanta trade for Vasquez. But if the mets did it and included say Niese or Parnell. Then again if a SP went down there is nobody in the minors of consequence to take the spot.

The Slider December 3, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Don’t forget the great Adam Bostick.

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I just can’t say it enough but some of you guys amaze me. You must be 15 years old.
What big name FA has signed?
Besides Vasquez, who most of you did not want anyway, what major trade has happen that you wanted to be a part of?

Again, tell what you would have done by now so we can all laugh at you instead of always making the same comments over and over.

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 4:00 pm

The real, is not about that, he is a bad GM and you know this, honestly, tell me you have faith in him to do great moves this offseason??? seriously!!

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Because while he has been here he has done more good than bad? You can debate that all you want and give all the credit to the Wilpons money and other teams for his success and blame all the negatives on him even with your what ifs. That’s fine. I just remember that the Mets used to stink and now they are relevant. Omar is an average GM and most likely better than any alternative that we have right now. I choose not to focus on things that will not change. Omar is here and will be here because he has the confidence of the owners.

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 4:09 pm

the real i agree with u 95% of the time but come on.. you know omar is horrible when it comes to make even desition.. when we over paid for players he’s at his best.. other than that he’s been terrible at moves that we needed..

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:12 pm

I still disagree. He has made good and bad moves just like every average GM. He’s not Theo but he’s not the worst by far.

mark4212 December 3, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Theo is not without his awful contracts and trades also.

Every GM does their good moves and their bad moves. I wouldn’t say Omar is a Genisus but he’s no fool. He could have gone heave ho for Santana and sent F-Mart and Pelfrey. But smartly he knew what he was doing.

He over Paid Beltran( now looks like a bargin) and Pedro (turned out to be a bust but we all wanted him)

You can criticize the trades in 2006 that moved bullpen parts. You can criticize Alou and Castillo.

But I want to hear why he has been so awful. He STOLE Maine, Stole Ollie. Signed Beltran who is the Best Offensive CF in baseball, and a top 3 defensive player.

mark4212 December 3, 2008 at 4:55 pm

Matt Holliday!

yosi December 3, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Not terrible. I kind of wish Figueroa wasn’t brought back, should have tried to sign someone younger to a minor league deal, but this is what fielding minor league teams is like.

That’s part of the problem with all this blogging (even though I read all of it) is that if a move is made that is huge, everyone freaks out.

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:03 pm

You can still sign a young guy for AAA. At least with Figgy we know he can come up and give a spot start or head to the pen and won’t mind being sent back down.

TheBigStapler December 3, 2008 at 4:10 pm

And he can use Wagner’s box all he wants now.

yosi December 3, 2008 at 4:22 pm

True. I’d just rather see Omar focus somewhere else first (and I’m not talking about huge moves – even small filling up minor league type moves) and then maybe coming back to someone like Figueroa. Take a chance on someone who has more upside than Figgy before bringing him back.

But again, not a bad move, just one that makes fans antsy.

yosi December 3, 2008 at 4:21 pm

I meant to say “if a move is made that “ISN’T” huge, everyone freaks out.”

hdarvick December 3, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Why wouldn’t you want Nelson Figueroa back?
Let’s look at the record: Nelson Figueroa was sent to Triple A in mid-May. He was called up the last week of August and appeared in seven games, all in September. He allowed one run in 6-2/3 innings for a 1.35 ERA, striking out 7, walking 2. Against the teams that mattered, he pitched a 1-2-3 inning against Milwaukee on September 1 (he won that game), two scoreless innings against Milwaukee on September 2nd, a 1-2-3 inning against Philadelphia on September 7th, and a 1-2-3 inning against Florida on Friday, September 26. If he was called into September games instead of some other relievers who shall remain nameless, we would’ve been in the postseason. He can and has pitched long relief and short relief and can spot start, if needed. He’s currently pitching in the Dominican Winter League for Aguilas Cibaenas. Nelson’s 3-0 (3 starts) with a 2.25 ERA, 3 walks, 15 strikeouts in 20 innings. As I said, why wouldn’t you want Nelson Figueroa back?

ugbmets21 December 3, 2008 at 4:10 pm

can we please get manny>?

listen guys his stats are unreal and he would make everyone better. he also puts fans in the seats, not saying they will have any prob with the new stadium.

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 4:19 pm

i want manny becoz he will put fear in the lineup and some ba**s in the clubhouse.. we would have some one to finnaly fire back at some of the criticism we’ve taken as a team the past 2 years!!

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:45 pm

and manny will put fear on the wilpons faces when he says his knee is bothering him and can’t play then puts jay horrowitz in a firemans carry and drops him like a sack of latkes

kingman 26 December 3, 2008 at 4:54 pm

LOL!

Rusty, I think you have correctly described EXACTLY what Manny would do as a Met….after a 4-for-5 game with a HR, 2 2B, and 5 RBI…..

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 5:01 pm

lol i got a new game to play at shea part deux next year = flay the jay everyone takes turns throwing balls with heilmans face at jay and he has to duck for cover lol btw kingman i was watching a mork and mindy rerun and pee wee did a guest shot -b4 he was famous lol

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:11 pm

You guys forget that every major signing will go through Omar before it becomes official just like it will go through the Yankees. An Agent would be stupid to say “Hey Krod the Brewers just offered you 3/36 you should take it.” Krod “Did you check with the Mets first?” Agent “Nah, Omar’s not really trying this offseason” LOL.

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 4:18 pm

with more reason to show you how incompetent he’s been.. he’s got the money side on him and yet still doesn’t know what to do.. i’d like him to put up.. is time for him to PUT ON for this city..

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:19 pm

LOL, now you are just starting to sound ignorant. I gotta let you move on and maybe tomorrow you will be back to semi-rational again.

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 4:20 pm

lol, ok.. maybe i was off today, but i just wish to see this guy step up to the plate and provide us with a all around team..

sambo December 3, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Good to see Figgy back.It just seems like though no matter what mover Omar makes someone is going to go nuts.

therealsince86 December 3, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Such is the life of sports and the internet.

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:32 pm

I AGREE ABOUT THE FIGMEISTER SAMBO BUT THIS IS “ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION??

zen December 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

jeff paris wilpon said the mets will engage in addition by subtraction this offseason at the citifield tour. davidoff believes this means castillo, heilman and schoeneweis.

davidoff, newsday

alex242 December 3, 2008 at 4:46 pm

i don’t care how the mets do it, but please get CASTILLO out of here!!!

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:50 pm

amen

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:46 pm

well theyre still here zen maybe he meant that he would make camoflage uniforms for the team next so u wont recognize em :P

metsfan575715 December 3, 2008 at 4:44 pm

we should use figgy as our long man next year. He can give u three innings or so and he can also start if u need him
I like this move

rustyjr December 3, 2008 at 4:49 pm

true he did decent in that role – i think that might go to a knight or brian stokes
