Starting Pitcher: Braves are Making Moves
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 3, 2008 3:34 pm

Yesterday, the Braves acquired RHP Javier Vazquez from the White Sox.

Today, the Daily News and Atlanta Journal-Constitution report Atlanta is preparing an offer for free-agent RHP A.J. Burnett, worth roughly $80 million over five years.

Burnett is a career 87–76 with a 3.81 ERA.

The Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees, Braves, Phillies and Orioles have all been linked in rumor to Burnett.

In a report for ESPN.com, Buster Olney said it might take a fifth year, guaranteed, to sign Burnett.

They can have him at that price.

Let them tie up $16 million per year for the next five years and let’s watch them fail to add more pop to their lineup.

    • chasmets says:

You cannot let Atlanta just walk in and get AJ at the very least try to drive the price up even more…The last thing we need is Atlanta becoming good again!

  2. mets182 says:

    braves still arnet that great

  3. CitizenSnips says:

He’s getting a lot of attention for only having one worthwhile season.

  4. therealsince86 says:

Again, this is why that although we need a SP we must stay out of the big name FA pitchers market. Get our closer because demand is low. Improve our offense and get 2 guys like Wolf and Marquis for the rotation that will allow us to get through this year and maybe next year the demand won’t be as high.

    • joe the wanderer says:

i agree. i wonder if the cubs is still interested in endy chavez for marquis.

the mets need a guy in the 4th or 5th spot in the rotation that can go 200 innings and an era around the high 4s. not having a pitcher like that since 2006 greatly hurts the bullpen greatly.

      • therealsince86 says:

Becareful I mentioned trading the Catch the other day and was jumped all over. I don’t know if the Cubs would still do it but I would send Show and Endy for Marquis anytime.

        • joe the wanderer says:

endy needs to go to be honest, the mets need a new bench core. no more castro, chavez, easley etc. they hurt this team back to back when they were most needed.

        • Gina says:

Endy didn’t hurt the team. Playing crap like Easley and Anderson did. Endy is a great bench outfielder if he’s used correctly.

        • rustyjr says:

i disagree with ya about easly gibna – he wasn’t crap he was a overused reserve that 7 times outta ten got the job done – it might not of been pretty but he was effective

        • Gina says:

7 times out of ten? He’s always been a terrible pinch hitter and he’s a poor defender. What exactly was he getting done.

  5. alex242 says:

“Improve our offense (by getting #25) and get 2 guys like Wolf and Marquis for the rotation that will allow us to get through this year and maybe next year the demand won’t be as high.

i totally agree the real.. ;-)

  6. oc410 says:

Thank goodness Omar is making moves

  7. Icckkhhh. I’m starting to doubt that the Mets will be able to compete for a frontline starting pitcher.

Sabathia, Lowe, and Burnett are the big 3 this offseason. Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, etc. are all suitors for at least one of them.

Sheets is a medical question mark.

    Perez is okay but expensive.

Garland and Wolf are just not that good.

    Who else am I missing.

    • alex242 says:

      pedro martinez..

    • GravediggerHebner says:

posted this in an earlier thread but it’s more relevant here:

Let the Braves sign Burnett for 5 years. For all the “injury prone” talk about Ben Sheets, Burnett got a 2 year career head start yet Sheets has made more starts, pitched more innings, has a better K/BB ratio, better WHIP, and will come shorter term and cheaper. I’d much rather have Sheets if Burnett is the other option.

      • darkstar73 says:

i’m down, sign Sheets for 2 years maybe? If that’s possible, and maybe throw a little extra money at him. I think he’s a great guy to take a risk on.

    • therealsince86 says:

That does not really bother me if these guys are going to get those type of deals. I would just rather be patient and take the 2009 Kyle Loshe.

    • Elastic says:

Yeah, If Burnett gets 5 years from Atlanta, I don’t see the Mets offering any of the top FA starters that many years.

We’ll be trading for starters or signing second tier FA SP.

  8. QnsNative1718 says:

With all the bs HIS teams have put Mets fans through, Omar better be whipping up something good.

  9. alex242 says:

jesus, i tell you, for having 2 staright season of chokeness i was hoping this guy would at least be more active.. all he’s trying to do is lower the price in k-rod.. that’s it.. oh wait, i forgot he signed delgado and tatis (who happend to have a messed up shoulder)… GREAT!!!!

  10. mistermet says:

3rd place here we come. Just keep sitting on your hands Omar.

I said all along, he’s not qualified for the position.

    • alex242 says:

I TOTALLY AGREE that the guy is clueless!! but the wilpons are more morons for letting this guy in there!!!

  11. therealsince86 says:

Wow, I can’t believe the reactions to Mets “fans” that want us to give Burnett 5/80. LOL.

  12. CitizenSnips says:

I love how some posters here have no idea what it’s like being a GM or their vision of a GM is someone who just wakes up, picks up the phone, chucks some money at someone and they sign automatically. Flashy names look ok but in a day and age where even average players at minimum are asking for 10+ million a year and you’ve only got 35-40 million to play with you gotta play your cards right.

    • therealsince86 says:

Shhh. It’s much more fun to ride Omar than to think logically.

      • alex242 says:

THE REAL I POSTED THIS BEFORE:

I’d like omar to shut us up by doing something dramatic to make us go wow, for real here we come… we bashed him and i think he’s one of the worst GM but the advantage he has is the fact that the mets are willing to pay.. if not for that we’d be in big troubles… BIG..

        • CitizenSnips says:

You realize he’s done much more good for this team than you think. But no you want to harp on the “what ifs” and “what could’ve been” instead of what he actually has done. Be thankful we actually support contenders instead of having an idiot like Jim Bowden at the helm. You really think it feels good to be a Nationals fan?

        • alex242 says:

“Be thankful we actually support contenders instead of having an idiot like Jim Bowden at the helm. You really think it feels good to be a Nationals fan?”

i’d give you 125 millions reason as to why we should be contenders!!! and that’s not including reyes and wright’s salary!!

        • therealsince86 says:

          Umm, we are contenders.

        • CitizenSnips says:

Haha seriously. I have no idea what alex is trying to say.

        • alex242 says:

we do content until the las t day of the season..

        • mouserdz says:

I still don’t know what alex is saying…

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Snips, how dare you be realistic! You’ve got the anonymity of the internet protecting you. Let your hair down man. Post some baseless uniformed criticism already, Jeez.

  13. zen says:

i remember everyone whining last year.

then omar traded for santana with a mediocre farms system.

    • therealsince86 says:

Nope I only live in the momment and every signing is the worst ever and every move made we could have done with our scrubs.

    • alex242 says:

but like i said it was also becoz minnesotta needed to trade him and only us and the yankkes and sox were involved.. that;’s the only reason!!!

      • zen says:

the yanks and sox are very, very stiff competition

      • therealsince86 says:

So only the 3 largest market teams were involved, that’s all.

        • alex242 says:

Becoz we were the only 3 teams that could afford him..

        • Angryredmenace says:

And two of those teams refused to give up their top prospects, which allowed the third team to get the prize(Santana) by Default.

      • CitizenSnips says:

You do realize that what we did end up giving up for him is nothing short of a miracle. If Omar had caved and traded around this time last year F-Mart and probably Pelf would’ve been playing in Minnesota.

  14. Roach2 says:

    DAM YOU WILLIE RANDOLPH!!!

  15. kistics says:

I don’t see what the big deal is with Burnett. He has had one good(?) season last year with over 4 ERA. The only thing he can do well is pitch against the Yankees. Throwing 80M at this guy would be signing Pavano again.

    • Gina says:

Burnett has had one good season? What would you call 2007, 2006 and 2005? I mean I personally wouldn’t want the mets to give him that kind of contract because of the injuries but if he’s healthy he’d be a big addition to their rotation.

      • kistics says:

He had only 3 seasons of 30+ starts in his career and one 29 start season. I’m not saying that he’s a bad pitcher, but he’s definitely not worth investing 80M for 5 years.

I see Burnett only slightly better than Ollie.

  16. Gina says:

Maybe I’m alone but if the Braves can add Burnett I’m going to be worried.

    • alex242 says:

don’t forget vasquez and jurjeans.. plus him.. but they need offense.. BADLY!!

      • Gina says:

Umm they were 6th in the NL in total runs scored, only 3 spots behind us. And post all-star break, when they no longer had Tex, there were 3rd in the NL. Their offense will be fine, especially if Franceour bounces back and some of their young outfielders develop like they’re expecting them too.

        • alex242 says:

but gina, also remember that the NL has the likes of : the pirates, nats, san diego, dodgers (pre manny) arizona.. teams with no offense at all..

        • Gina says:

Umm the dodgers had many post all star break and they stopped playing the offensive black holes that are Juan Peirre and Andruw Jones and the Braves still out scored them post all-star break. They scored exactly 7 less runs than we did.

        • alex242 says:

treu, but they weren’t great offensively anyways, also gina checked this out:

          jair jurjean: 13-10 3.68 139k’s..

          mike pelfrey: 13-11 3.72 110k’s..

both pitchers great upside.. wouldn’t rule out pelfrey being better than him..

        • Gina says:

Jurrjens is 2 years younger. And had a better k/9, k/bb and has better command over his off-speed pitchers. I think they’ll both end up being middle of the rotation type starters but I think Jurrjens will be better.

    • kistics says:

Braves will always be in contention, but they don’t have Johan or Pelf. If the Mets sign #2-3 type starter, the Mets will have better rotation than the Braves

      • Gina says:

I love Pelfrey, but I’m pretty sure I would rather have Jurggjens. If they add Burnett I don’t see how we could have a better rotation than them. Maybe if equal if Maine comes back healthy and is better than he was last year and Pelfrey continues to progress and we sign someone like Lowe but not better.

        • kistics says:

But you are forgetting Johan. He’s one of if not the best pitcher in baseball. Braves don’t have a pitcher like that.

Plus I really think that Pelf was as dominate as Jurggjens if not more dominate. They both had simiar numbers last year despite the fact that Pelf had terrible start.

You said that IF Maine stays healthy, but that same IF goes to Burnett as well. Also, the Mets will get another #2-3 type starter (Sheets, Lowe, or someone like that). I really don’t see how the Brave’s roatation is better than the Mets

        • Gina says:

How was Pelfrey more dominate? Jurjjens had a better k/9 and k/bb and baa. Although I agree if we add Lowe we’ll have a better rotation I don’t think there’s any chance of us getting Lowe. Plus you’re forgetting Jorge Campillo who had an awesome year and them possibly adding Tommy Hanson to the mix.

        • kistics says:

Jurrjens had better K/9 and K/BB numbers because Pelf is not a strikeout pitcher. Plus, his numbers are only slightly better.

          Jurrjens 139Ks 70 BBs 1.37 WHIP
          Pelfrey 110Ks 64 BBs 1.36 WHIP

This is despite the bad start that Pelf had. I’m not sure what the numbers would be, but if we subtract first couple starts, Pelf’s numbers would be much better.

        • wrightstuff08 says:

If the Mets go into ‘09 with Pelf,Maine, and Niese in the rotation, they will be a third place team. Plus, getting a closer will fill only one of many holes in this ballclub. Omar is focusing way too much on a closer and it will prove disasterous to the Mets.

        • Coolpapabell says:

Dumb question but, is Tim Hudson going to pitch for them next year?

        • Gina says:

          I don’t think so.

  17. Bruce Boisclair says:

The Braves can have both of them. Vasquez is somewhat solid, but unspectacular– I’d take him as #4 or 5 on our team, but the Braves, with their injuries, may ask him to be front of the rotation material. Burnett is an injury waiting to happen.

Let’s face it– we are going to get younger in all phases of our pitching, with the possible exception of signing Lowe, but not at crazy money (I think he’s going to get that elsewhere.) I see our rotation and bullpen as follows:

    Santana
    Maine
    Pelfrey
    Garland
    Niese

    Bullpen:
    KRod (closer)
Street (setup, for Heilman and prospect)
Feliciano (I wouldn’t give he and Heilman up for Street)
    Smith
    Parnell
    Other reliever via trade/FA

  18. ExileInLA says:

Look at AJ’s career stats — is he that much better than OP (minus the 2-14 year with PIT)?

I can’t see anyone going 5 for Perez, but the hope of getting him for a 3 year/$40mm deal may be gone…maybe 4/$55 to keep him?

    • kistics says:

Completely agree. Nobody in their right mind would sign Ollie for 5 years 80MM. I see Burnett slightly better than Ollie. But Burnett has had only one season with 15+ wins and 3 seasons with 30+ starts. Only thing he’s known for is that he is dominant against the Yanks. Other than that, I don’t see him worth 16MM. Braves can have another Pavano.

  19. bkfitz says:

Braves were 72-90. They need more than Vazquez and Burnett to go 90-72.

  20. Gina says:

Are the Giants really going to trade Sanchez for Cantu? Wtf?
