amBuzz: Giants are Active, Atkins, Dustin, Green
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 4, 2008 7:51 am

The Padres have traded SS Khalil Green to the Cardinals, reports the San Diego Union Tribune, which could help keep Jake Peavy in San Diego.

“The Giants and Marlins have discussed a trade that would send LHP Jonathan Sanchez to the Marlins for infielder Jorge Cantu,” according to Jon Heyman’s blog at SI.com.

Free-agent OF Casey Blake is seeking a three-year deal, and is being pursued most heavily by the Twins and Dodgers, according to Jayson Stark at ESPN.com.

three years…for blake…it’s a shame, because i like him a lot…i think he’d be a great fit for the Mets…but not in 2011…

The Giants are very close to signing free-agent SS Edgar Renteria, to what could be a two-year deal, reports the SF Gate.

The Giants also signed free-agent reliever Bob Howry to a one-year, $2.75 million deal, according to the Associated Press.

the buzz in baseball continues to suggest the Giants are trying to shore up every hole on the roster, quickly, in advance of making a run at CC Sabathiatime will tell

The Pirates and Dodgers continue to discuss a deal that could send SS Jack Wilson to Los Angeles, writes the Post Gazette.

The Rockies may end up keeping 3B-OF Garrett Atkins, while signing him to an extension, reports the Denver Post.

Lastly, the Red Sox signed 2B Dustin Pedroia to a six-year, $40 million deal, which extends in to his first two seasons of free agency, as was first reported by Peter Gammons at ESPN.com.

David Wright and Hanley Ramirez were each given $55 million over the same period, while Ryan Braun got $44 million.

Posted this on last nights post. See what you guys think. It’s more of a conversation piece than something that would or something that would or could happen.

    Mets trade: Delgado, Heilman, Fmart
    Rays trade: Crawford, Sonnanstine, Bradford.

    • rogasm says:

I think you should put the crack pipe down. No way that happens.

    • mikey_FF says:

I don’t like F-Mart in that deal. Replace him with a different prospect and it works for me.

    • dominicanboy08 says:

I will only trade f-mart for an ace. we dont need crawford, we can get similar production from murphy/tatis in LF. Also we would downgrade our offense if we trade delgado without a replacement. sonnanstine is decent, but I wouldnt trade f-mart for him. I dont think this is a good trade at all.

    • joeinorlando says:

I’d hate to give up on F Mart given the the lack of depth down on the farm… i think a delgado/heilman/felicano might get you bradford and sonnistine or jackson… but we would have to send alot of cash also… and Im afraid that Tampa may just sign Giambi for there DH if he will sign cheap…

interesting trade though…but then we would have to throw alot of money at Tex to make sure we get him

      • therealsince86 says:

Or Murphy would be at 1B if we did not get him. Crawford does not replace Delagdo’s power but would produce a lot of runs.

    • Danny says:

Why would the Devil Rays do this? They are desperate for a RF, so why would they trade their LF for a 1B when they already have Carlos Pena?

      The trade doesn’t work.

      • stickguy says:

They are trading for a power hitting DH, which they do need. Heilmann either goes to their pen or to replace Sonn. in the rotation,.

      • therealsince86 says:

Delgado would be a DH and they survived much of the season last year without Crawford. Not to mention they would still have money to go out and sign another OF if needed.

        • Danny says:

Would they really have all this money to get someone else? How high do you think they are taking the payroll?

        • therealsince86 says:

Well your point is that they are desperate for a RF. How are they going to get that RF to start with?
Delgado, Heilman, Fmart cost the same or even a little less than Crawford, Bradford, Sonnanstine.

        • Danny says:

But they would use their trade chips to fill the RF/power need. They aren’t going to pay $12M for a guy who can only DH and is the same exact player as Carlos Pena.

        • mark4212 says:

Awesome so now we have 2 lefty specialists and 2 righty specialists!

Take F-Mart out and it might be fairer. Bardford stinks, i know he was effective 2 years ago for the mets. He stunk for the O’s and was good in a “Specialized” role down the stretch for the Rays. We have 3 of those already!

The Mets outfield defensively would be crazy if that happened.

    • CaseStreet says:

Sounds good, except F-Mart won’t be traded because he’s supposed to be a future all-star. So I think the team would rather hold on to him and have a future all-star for cheap instead of trading him for someone of lesser value.

      • therealsince86 says:

        Crawford is of lesser value?
Come on, I know this trade won’t happen but we would be incredibly lucky if Fmart turns into Crawford.

        • kingman 26 says:

Correct TRS….Crawford and Reyes at the top of the lineup together, hitting 35 triples between them, and everything else they produce would be great. If FMart is Crawford, we will be very happy.

        • CaseStreet says:

You are right on Crawford, he is awesome and did great for me on one of my teams. Still, like I’ve said before, unless we’re trading for Jesus, the Mets will never trade F-Mart.

    • alex242 says:

      Mets trade: Delgado, Heilman, Fmart
      Rays trade: Crawford, Sonnanstine, Bradford.(BALFOUR)

now that i’d like to see better if it was the case..

    • Maybe if we could tweak the deal a little bit so we could get Balfour. If not him, then maybe Eddie “The Eagle” Belfour.

  2. stickguy says:

OK, I’ll post my response again too!

great deal if they can swap out F Mart for a couple of other parts. Maybe Kunz and Evans? Wonder what the Rays really need?

Although I am not quite so high on Sonnanstine as you are, and actually Crawford replaces the need for F Mart anytime soon (what is his contract status? Is he a righty or lefty?)

Of course, they need a 1B then. Gee, wonder where we could find one that could become a key part of the core for years to come?

A top 5 of Reyes, Crawford, with Wright, Tex and beltran driving them in? Scary to think of that production.

Then you have guys like CHurch to clean up. And if by some miracle they can shore up 2B and C with some actual offensive talent in the next couple of years, a line up without holes.

    • harrychiti says:

I think Crawford’s only inked through 2010, with this year and next as club options.

    • therealsince86 says:

I don’t think it gets done without Fmart as they would want a long term replacement for Crawford.
Crawford has 2 option years left at around 10 million each.

    • therealsince86 says:

What if we switch Church for Fmart. I love Church but would that allow us to keep Fmart? Maybe if we threw in another lower prospect or cash?

      Delgado, Heilman, Church, cash ?

      Crawford, Sonnanstine, Bradford?

Crawford would play RF, Murphy LF and Sonnanstine would be our #5.
Of course then we would HAVE to get Tex.

  3. Prismo says:

Who is Pedroia’s agent? He could’ve gotten much more money…

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Dude, the guy is still only a 2nd basemen…Look at Jose’s contract..middle infielders never get over 10mm a year. Even for an MVP

      • Prismo says:

“…Hanley Ramirez were each given $55 million over the same time period”

        • starz31 says:

It is a good deal…He has only played 2 full seasons, has a few years till arbitration and F.A. So instead of making a rookie salary, the guy gets to bank millions now in exchange for giving up his 2 first years of FA. He would make comparable salary through arbitration anyways. Its a security thing that benefits the player now and the club in a few years.

        • mouserdz says:

I think it’s a fair deal. What I think we can take away from the Pedroia deal is that players and teams are worried about how the economy will impact them in coming years.

I was hearing on the radio how FAs this year may accept one year deals, in the hope for an economic turnaround, and hopefully land better deals next year. I personally wouldn’t aree with this strategy, because the economy will probably be worse next year.

  4. joeinorlando says:

not sure if this is true, but it popped up when I googled him…

” While Sonnanstine commands a fair bit of attention, much of it is due to the rare genetic disorder that causes him to age at a rate three times that of a normal adult. ”

    interesting…

    • Danny says:

I sincerely doubt this is true. He is already 25 years old. That would give him the body of a 75 year-old.

  5. steadyeddie says:

I see that the Phillies have offered D. Lowe a contract and as we read yesterday, Braves are on Burnett…
any word when Omar will be presenting his “plan”?

    • joeinorlando says:

the phillies…. wow… did they give the terms?

I cant believe SF would trade Sanchez for Cantu

      • therealsince86 says:

Has to be more to that Cantu trade. Otherwise I would be trying to send Murphy and a prospect for him ourself.

        • stickguy says:

murphy and a Kunz type for Sanchez? That you do.

        • alex242 says:

didn’t you say yest that cantu is way more ready than anything we have to offer?.. make up your mine real..

        • therealsince86 says:

I did. Much more ready. Cantu for Sanchez straight up is a terrible trade for the Giants however. But what’s the hurt with checking in? I don’t think it would get it done but I sure would be trying. I think it would take Murphy and Evans from us to get him instead of just Cantu in Florida. See the difference?

        • foul bunt strikeout says:

I love Murphy and evans is a decent option off the bench but I’d send these guys in a sec for Sanchez.

I think Sanchez might command more than that but he’d be a greeat pick up for the Mets. Good Young Pitcher that can develop more and that we can lock up.

I really wonder what exactly Omar has planned for this off season?

        • joeinorlando says:

he will get his closer …. SP probably will have to come via a trade… especially if CC signs with SF the yankees will be forced to throw alot of money at Lowe, Burnett, Sheets, or Ollie….

I am alittle worried about our OF especially if Delgado’s offense declines from last year

  6. stickguy says:

Whether this deal is plausible or not, it does bring up a valid point about the construction of the team (and why moving Delgado is a fine idea).

yeah, you might give up some HRs, but the team looks more balanced with speed and some power. Less waiting for a HR or K, and Dps into the shift. More of an NL style run producing team 9and probably less streaky offensively).

Personally, I don’t think Delgado is going to have a huge year, and would even be surprised if he could play close to 160 games again.

Given his 2008 finish, reasonable contract (length and $) for what he produced last year, it actually seems that he should bring back a decent return. Certainly as much, if not more, as Dye.

If they could trade him and sign Tex, perfect. But, if they can get a good return (a solid SP option, real BP help, a legit C prospect to use as a 2009 platoon, even a 2B to replace Castillo), then you can still make the team better by piecing together a 1B option.

murphy or Carp /evans could platoon. Sign Dunn. Get any of a number of other ST optins that could do the job.

My first choice of course is Tex. Dunn though will easily replace Delgados production (probably will exceed it), locks up the position for a few more years, and will likely cost about the same $$s.

But, if you go with a cheap option (like the young guy platoon) you free up more $$ for either a run at a big time SP, or a bit hitter for LF (like Manny, or a trade for Carlos Lee.)

You trade Delgado, and then trade for lee, and the net impact to the prospect pool is not that large. I know Lee makes a lot of money, but man, get him and Tex? Truly a monster lineup!

so to recap, trade Delgado and dump Castillo while you are at it.

And Tex would be the perfect fit, but there are plenty of other options.

    • therealsince86 says:

Exactly, even if you can’t get Tex if you could swing something like my deal including Church instead of Fmart and then still sign Dunn?
Reyes, Crawford, Wright, Dunn, Beltran, Murphy, Schnieder, Castillo?

  7. JamesK says:

I’m pretty sure Blake is a 3B and not an OF. He last consistently played OF in 2006.

That said, how would he be a “perfect fit” on the 2008 Mets (hypothetically)? He’s not playing 3B obviously, and wouldn’t work in LF. He’s never played 2B, and wouldn’t accept a bench role. How would he make any sense? Just cause he’s “gritty” and has a beard?

  8. I think Omar is asleep. I’m an Omar supporter, but all of these offers that are on the table for starting pitching. We are going to end up with a rotation of Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Garland, Niese. To me, that is horrible. I’m not sure what others think. If we don’t land one of these starting pitchers, we are going to be force-fed Ollie. I have no problem with Ollie (in fact, I like him), but I don’t think you can play the FA market the same way we played the Santana trade market last year. Waiting too long with no offers out there.

The Vasquez trade was a joke. Pardon me if you guys already beat this to death (I haven’t been on in a few days as I have been reading non-stop news on Plaxico), but Kenny Williams could have gotten back a bigger haul than Jo-Jo Reyes (a 6th starter) and Brett Lillibridge (the poor man’s Jeff Blauser). Is it just me?

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      plax is an idiot

    • Fiya Minaya says:

      Love the Jeff Blauser reference.

      • Doesn’t he look like Jeff Blauser?

Plax really is an idiot. I feel bad for the guy in a way because he really isn’t a violent person (or at least doesn’t have a history of it), but he is just immature. If I were to bet, I would say the Steve Smith incident shook him up and he was being cautious. Even still, there is no excuse for what he did. Wish him well as a human being though.

        • mouserdz says:

Plax has had the cops sent to his home for domestic disputes… his wife claiming he was physical. So I don’t know if he’s not a violent person.

    • foul bunt strikeout says:

relax, we resigned Figueroa. Our rotation is set!

      • Yea, thank God for that. Without him, we wouldn’t have any of Fred’s boys from Brooklyn.

      • therealsince86 says:

Yeah that’s what the article said. It said they signed Figgy to a major league contract. What you mean it was a minor league contract? Oh well never mind. I look like an idiot now.

    • therealsince86 says:

Umm last I heard, Reyes was not in the deal and a bunch of prospects was.
And do you really want us to make a 5 year offer to Burnett or 4 year offer to Lowe? How about a 7 year offer to CC. Again, Omar knows that all of these agents will come to him before they sign the dotted line.

      • I’m not saying I want to make a 5 yr or 4 yr offer for either Burnett or Lowe. I’m just saying, if that’s the market, what can you do besides go with Jon Niese as your #5. Sorry, but that doesn’t work without a legit #2, which we don’t have IMO.

I initially heard Jo-Jo Reyes was in the deal. Regardless, I think Kenny Williams dropped the ball on this deal.

        • therealsince86 says:

How can you say he dropped the ball when you don’t even know what prospects were in it? LOL.

And you are saying that we should over pay and tie up our rotation for years to come just because the market is out of whack this year?
Give me Wolf and Sonnanstine for our rotation this year and maybe next year things are more reasonable.

        • I’m saying he dropped the ball if the initial reports are correct. If Brett Lillibridge is the centerpiece of this deal, it’s fair to say he dropped the ball. We saw him play. He has the power of Luis Castillo, with a body of Craig Counsell. He will be nothing special.

I’m not saying we should overpay and tie up our rotation for years to come. I am saying we are nowhere near a division title (much less a world series) with Randy Wolf and Andy Sonnastine in the back end of our rotation.

        • therealsince86 says:

Right because the Phillies rotation was that much better in the #4 and 5 spot last year. That’s just silly. You would have 5 starters that could go 200 innings with a decent ERA. That’s enough for me this year.

  9. eduardosmets says:

this might sound crazy but i wouldnt mind it at all

lets trade delgado , heilman , and showenwise, duanor sanchez
for carl crawford , balfour , and andy sonnanstine

then we trade luis castillo, ryan church daniel murphy and low level prospect if have to for jermaine dye and bobby jenks

sign mark texeria 10 year – 180 million-18 or less for 1st season
sign orlando hudson 4 years 45 mill-8 mil 1st season
    sign oliver perez -5 years-50 mill-8 mill 1st season
thats only 34 million on budget for next year a lil over wat they can spend but i doubt the wilpons will care if it makes us alot better

    reyes
    hudson
    texeria
    wright
    beltran
    dye
    crawford
    schnieder/castro unless we upgrade somehow
    pitcher

were def going to need a setup man which i think hoffman would take low price if we tell him were trying to win a world series
and we need a lil upgrade on the bench

but i really wouldnt mind this at all it makes us a great team with power and alot of speed which is how we use 2 play and we need 2 continue and can do that with reyes and hudson and crawford and beltran running all day tell me wat you guys think

    • The two-headed monster of Schneider/Castro usually sounds good. However, at some point (my guess is April 21), Castro will be out for two months. So replace Schneider/Castro with Schneider/Cancel and you’re looking more realistic.

  10. Yeah the SOx got Pedroia at a bargain… he’s the heart and soul of that team and they’ve locked him for 6 years at less than 7 mil per. That’s crazy… seems like Pedroia could have held out for more. But whatever, maybe he’s one of the guys that so thankful for what he’s got that he’ll play in Boston at a discount.

The thought of trading another top prospect who is not “major league ready” to the Rays sends shivers down my spine
