The Reds are close to re-signing reliever Mike Lincoln to a two-year, $4 million deal, according to the Denver Post.
The Giants signed SS Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18.5 million deal, with a third-year option, reports the SF Gate.
Tim Dierkes, at MLB Trade Rumors, has a list of players who he believes could be non-tendered, like LHP Erik Bedard and OF Willy Tavares, who would then become free agents.
According to Ken Rosenthal, at FoxSports.com, the A’s would rather trade for Nick Johnson then sign Jason Giambi.
Also, Rosenthal believes the Dodgers and Yankees could once again discuss swapping Robinson Cano and Matt Kemp.
The Rockies could end up trading Huston Street, if they re-sign Brian Fuentes, reports Buster Olney at ESPN.com.

K-Rod to Mets.
Fuentes back to Rockies.
Street to Mets.
=)
No WAY Bedard gets non-tendered after what the Mariners gave up to get him. Even if for only one year (or half a year) they are going to want to get SOMETHING out of him. Maybe they would be willing to listen for trade offers, but no way they non-tender.
If you non tender a guy, does it mean your off the hook for his salary?
If you non-tender someone you are not offering them salary arbitration before they are eligible to be a free agent. So yes they are off the hook for his salary that they have yet to offer.
Directly from the article. Matt misled us quite a bit here.
“I tried to keep it to names that are at least mildly interesting. Bedard is unlikely but I tossed him in anyway.”
Thanks for this clarification Hubie….after what they gave up, there is exactly zero chance the M’s would non-tender Bedard….
can u say meh
hey kingman i caught an old episode of mork and mindy – paul ruebens was a guest star lol btw u remember the seattle metal band coven?
LOL…was Pee Wee as brilliant as he was for his one line in the Blues Brothers?
Yeah, Coven was breaking up I think right about when I moved to Seattle in 1989….didn’t know them much…the death/punk/metal scene was in its last throes then. The guitarist I moved there with worked with a guy from a band like Coven called Ten Minute Warning, which had broken up when one of the guys answered an ad and moved to LA—Duff who joined Guns N Roses!
Man, I wish I was going to Vegas with Omar….love that place….I know Vegas like I know the Blues Bros!
I was thinking the same thing
that would be funny though, after all they gave up for him (Jones, Sherill, Tillman)
Im wondering, will the Rockies really take Evans, and a lower level prospect for Street?
I just dont see that happening.
Evans, and Heilman maybe!
doubt it
Does anyone know how a player becomes qualified to become “non tendered”??
While a player is under a teams control (usually about 6 years, 3 years of tendered contracts and 3 years of arbitration), a team can elect to non-tender a player and they immediately become free agents.
Brandon Backe and Randy Flores are interesting names.
When healthy, Backe’s got decent upside. He’s got a really good curveball and records a good amount of K’s. Not to mention his hitting ability; in all seriousness, he gives Jerry Manuel an extra right handed bat off the bench.
I’d also give Flores a cheap one year deal just to get a new name in the Mets pen. He’s had some success before (Lefties OPS’d .691 against him in 2006), and has only given up 9 combined home runs in the last 3 seasons. Heck, sign his brother too. Ron Flores has held lefties to a career .574 OPS.
The Rays offered Chad Bradford to the Mets because $3.5 million is too much in Tampa’s world for a set-up man, and Ray officials were shocked when the Mets told them it is too much for them, as well.
Bradford pitched to a 2.12 ERA between Baltimore and Tampa last season. Pitching for the Red Sox, Mets, Orioles and Tampa over the past four seasons, Bradford has worked to a 2.92 ERA. He does not strike out many, just 101 in 209 1-3 innings, but he also does not walk many (48).
His lefty/righty splits are terrible. He’s not a set up man he’s an overpriced roogy. The Rays probably offered him to us because they thought we were stupid.
gina, can you really blame the tampa bay devil rays for thinking we’re stupid…*cough*kazmir*cough*
The rules of the non-tender game are simple,. Teams must tender contracts to all players on their 40-man rosters by Dec. 12, or the players become free agents. The rules permit a maximum salary reduction of 20 percent from the previous year. The issue with a guy like Bedard is they gave up so much for him
Bradford has two years left on his deal….7mm total i thought
I don’t think so. I thought he signed a 3 year deal when he left after 2006.
My question is what are its limits, cause im sure a team would use it to dump salary. Im sure there are some qualifications before you can non tender a player.
Like SF non tendering Zito. Whats seperates a player from being non tendered or tendered,.
Barry Zito has a contract with a set amount of years and money that is basically set in stone until it expires. somebody who would be non-tendered is a player who is arbitration eligible and has not been resigned (for instance, Ryan Church, John Maine and Aaron Heilman all could conceivably be non-tendered because they are arbitration eligible and do not have a contract signed for next season. however, they are Mets property and not free agents b/c they have not reached 6 years of MLB service time, which is the amount needed to become a free agent. as another example, David Wright is under 6 years but he signed a contract extension of 6 years, meaning that once that runs out, he’ll be a free agent, as he’ll be over his 6 years of MLB service).
I think the player has to be arbitration eligibile meaning they can not be a free agent due to service time.
Maybe the Mets can get the Rays to eat some salary. Bradford is better than any of the clowns currently in Omar’s bullpen.
We have Smith. We really don’t need another side arming righty.
don’t worry, Omar is taking a brilliant new tactic of pursuing low risk high reward solutions.
The Rays eating salary?
Ok buddy, how much crack have you smoked today?
Happy Birthday Matt!
Lets have a few strong ales to celebrate before you go into lockdown for the Winter Meetings.
A player’s contract has to be expired and he be arbitration eligible (not a true free agent) before he can be non-tendered. Zito still has a few more years to go on his contract so he would have to be released, but then the Giants are on the hook for the rest of the contract. Major League contracts are guaranteed.
There is no shot Bedard gets non-tendered. I wonder what it would take to get him in a trade, but there is no shot he gets non-tendered.
I would consider giving up a couple of prospects in a deal for him and Putz.
Why has there been no chatter about Ben Sheets? Yes, he’s been injury prone, but when healthy, he’s nasty. What about a two year contract offer for someone like him? I’d rather have Sheets than Perez.
everyone is waiting for c.c to sign so that it can dictate the market
I agree on Sheets. If the Mets signed him, Sheets would really set up a strong 1-2 punch with Johan. I would rather him than Perez too.
If we do go for Sheets, we’d need a capable back-up in case of injury.
that is what you keep a guy like Neise in AAA for.
why do i feel a high level of anxiety of=ver this hotstove ?? to quote the philosipher han of solo ” i have a bad feeling about this!!”
All good things come to he who is patient, my young Jedi….Omar is busy securing the finest suite in Vegas, and once he has that out of the way, he will shortly be signing KRod and trading for Street and Putz….
I hope….
i just hope he doesnt order a chik with a stick lol – was in vegas last june – met penn and teller – great guys went to hart and huntington to get a new tat – rip off artists lol and kingman btw u ever hear of a wa band called coven?? they were pretty big up there if i recall and also are u on myspace?
Or nothing will happen except minor moves
and i still don’t know why omar has a hardon against bradford i read earlier on mlbtr that the rays are willing to trade him to us but omar doesnt want his 3.5 mill salary wtf!!
well obviously we have a younger and much cheaper submarine RH pitcher named Joe Smith but i’d swap him for Castillo
The Rays wouldn’t take Castillo if Omar offer them 70 of the hottest Norwegian hooker and the best Peruvian coke money could buy.
Reyes
Beltran
Manny
Delgado
Wright
Church
Murphy (2B)
Schneider
Fatstro
Daryle Ward
Eckstein
Tatis
Chavez
Santana
Pelfrey
Garland
Penny
Maine
Figueroa/Stokes
Sanchez
Feliciano
Smith
Cordero
Street
Rodriguez
I know it would cost the Mets a bit more than they planned but after 2 years of not making the playoffs we gotta spend more that 40 mil especially with this talent available. I don’t know if both Penny and Garland can be had but if not Pedro as the 5th starter i can live with b/c Pedro is the man.
Obviously i’d prefer Lowe or Sheets over Garland but i dont see the mets getting Lowe and the Mets don’t seem to be interested in Sheets
I hardly know where to start.
2B: Murphy is not a second baseman. His injury in the offseason pretty much ensured that Castillo will be the starting second baseman when the season starts. Maybe with a couple months at AAA, Murphy would be ready to take over… but he’s just not ready.
LF: Manny isn’t coming to NY… and the Mets aren’t going to enter the Manny sweepstakes. Moving on.
Bench: Eckstein isn’t coming to NY to be a bench player.
The pitching predictions aren’t that out of whack. But like you said, the money isn’t there to do all of that anyway.
1 Lefty in the pen??? Eck on the bench?? Ur dreaming..lol
does people forget about how bad the mets were scoring runs late in games? how about the last 2 weeks where we couldnt drive in a run. listen pitching is a must but how come omar keeps saying pitching pitching pithing. we need offensive help. MaNNY is that guy. from what reporrts say, he is in the best shape of his career. while everyone in our division has been improving there pitching, we have yet to make a move to counter act those moves. if omar doesnot make a offensive upgrade, we will deff be in 3 behind phills and braves. LETS GO OMAR MOVE YOUR A$$!
Manny’s defensive liability counteracts most of his offensive ability (defense is so undervalued). And he’s old, and likely to decline. With that in mind, Manny is probably going to be overpaid. Instead, if we wanted more offense and ignore some defense, we could sign Dunn who is slightly worse but in his prime. Then we can put the money we save from Ramirez for pitching.
Totally unrelated but the apparently A-rod is going to play for the Dominican team. They’re going to be friggin stacked.
I wish my (other) country played baseball. All they can do is sprint.
good so Wright gets to start
If only I could be GM for a day:
I would resign Ollie… he is valuable and we are a big enough market team to overpay for him. Then sign Garland or Sheets. Then sign K-Rod and trade for a set up man (prefferably Street). Even with those two additions in the pen, i think we would be ok b/c its a crap shoot every year with these guys anyway. Then you need to make some type of offensive upgrade… maybe trading for Dye or signing Dunn and putting him in left. This may be quite expensive but managment owes it to us suicidal fans (come on spend $50 mil!!).
Ideal would be…
Santana
Pelfrey
Sheets
Perez
Maine
Reyes
Wright
Beltran
Delgado
Dye
Church
Castro
Castillo
K-Rod
Street
Danchez
Smith
Feliciano
Schoe
Come on Omar!! Actually, come on Wilpons!!
Lets hope Omar does not get held up at the Buffet at the Bellagio and make a few moves and I mean big moves
i dont understand y u guys want to trade for relievers when theres plenty of em on the market and sign for a starter when theres no solid ones on the market besides cc. id like to trade heilman and evans for edwin jackson. trade for bedard, watever hes gonna cost, perhaps duda, kunz, and carp. hows bout showenweis and parnell for theriot. this would make peavy deal easier for cubs because of parnell to trade. trade niese and average prospect for a ranger catcher.sign dunn for left field. sign cordero and k-rod.
santana
maine
bedard
jackson
pelfrey
reyes
church
wright
dunn
beltran
delgado
ranger catcher
theriot
pitcher
that is a ridiculous team and i think extremely possible if omar wanted to do this
i wouldnt go near bedard at all… the guys a mess he proved it last year. Im not sold on Jackson either, hes average at best. I think we’re losing out by letting Ollie go. Hes just as good as Lowe, much younger and a lefty. I like Dunn though- maybe trade Church in a package for a starter if you have Dunn and then go with youth in right field.
i dont know whats funnier, the idea that you think this is remotely possible or the fact that pelfrey is the 5 starter and Maine is the #2 starter and Bedard the #3 Starter
no not remotely, he said “extremely possible”…
hmm so ur tellin me u like havin to lefties goin back to back, and yes it is possible id love to hear which of those trades would be rejected, and just saying it is possible does not mean i expect it to happen
and y do u find pelfrey number 5 funny, r u saying pelfrey is better than jackson or maine? then ur pretty stupid considering the fact pelf has had one good year while maine and jackson have been reliable for a while
if my memory serves me correctly, Maine and Jackson have had only one good year as well and Maine has been known to break down by early August. And I doubt the cubs would give up a starter for a mid level prospect and a piece of crap!
look at maines last 3 years, theyre good. i personally feel edwin jackson is better that pelf b/c hes pitched in more seasons and i think he has more upside than pelf. as for theriot, i thought it was fair because parnell could be used as trait bait for peavy and they did lose howry and wood and they only got gregg, i thought wouldve needed a reliever, and when the supposed beltran trade rumors to the cubs, i saw the fans wanted to put theriot as a throw in as there are other options in the market for the position. now, please i dont wanna argue any more, i just thought it would be nice to give my idea of wat the mets should do
We’re not getting a ranger catcher.
i apologize, manny instead of dunn
have u seen the size of citi we need someone who can cover ground and Dunn cant do it
manny cant cover that much ground but its better then and we could use a righty power bat in our lineup
yea but Manny is easily one of the greatest hitters in MLB history and is coming off one of the most amazing second half of a season in MLB history.
where you tuned into the games last year?
every catch a circus event!
playing the outfield like they’re being chased by a bumblebee!
Manny would hammer in 160 for goodness sake. There’s always guys standing on 2nd and 3rd. It’s getting them in that this team failed at!
I love da Mets!
vazquez to braves i just saw on espn
old
Omar been real quiet for a man with so much to do….
where we goin’, Omar?
Maybe the A’s would like Delgado over Nick Johnson or Giambi.
