The Star-Ledger reports the Pirates will trade SS Jack Wilson to the Tigers, however Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told MLB.com, “That report is not accurate. I can 100 percent tell you that.”
The Yankees will meet with free-agent RHP CC Sabathia prior to the Winter Meetings, which begin next Monday as will the Brewers, according to ESPN.com.
The Braves are the front-runners for A.J. Burnett, explains Jayson Stark at ESPN.com.
Yesterday, reports indicated the Braves will get Burnett if they guarantee a fifth year to their offer.
Stark also reports the Phillies have very little chance of signing free-agent RHP Derek Lowe.
Lastly, according to Stark, only the Dodgers, A’s and O’s are the only teams showing interest in SS Rafael Furcal.

Burnett will fit in nicely with the Braves recent collection of big arm/big name SPs that are broken down in the repair shop.
I would rather have Sheets for 2-3 than Burnett for 5.
Spend the money on Tex. Lock up a core component for years to come. He should be primed to have some real good seasons coming up, and with DW, JR and CB a great core to build around.
Pitchers are too darned fragile to keep giving out 5 year big money deals to (or 4 year deals to a a 36 YO and IMO overrated guy like Lowe).
Also saw on the minors board that Carp started a winter league game in RF yesterday. That might be fun to watch!
Signing Tex would be beautiful and it makes perfect sense. Hopefully this is “where Omar is going” that they are going to “let him go”.
Carp in the outfield? Showcase?
There is no doubt in my mind that we should go after Tex and just wait on the SP market and see who gets left out. I don’t want any of the big names other than maybe Sheets if the price was right.
One of Carp, Murphy, Evans HAS to be traded to fill other holes.
It’s a good bet that both Evans and Carp get traded.
actually to be honest i think Murphy would probably be the best one to trade.
obviously not for a CP b/c of K-Rod’s availability but he’s had a great start to his MLB career and he would bring in the most talent.
Personally i’d like to keep Murphy but is it possible to package Heilman, Murphy and maybe Parnell to get Street and Atkins.
Atkins is no Teixeira but he could play LF until Delgado leaves.
Although if the Mets could make that trade and sign Teixeira then moving Delgado to Tampa for Sonnanstine or Jackson would be a great move
I know what you’re saying … but the reason Murphy is the best one to trade is also the same reason he is the best one to keep.
Murphy reminds me of a LH, healthy and young Moises Alou just he’s a terrible fielder.
I like the kid but he’s not the next David Wright and the expectations people are putting on him are getting crazy
You can learn how to field though. He’ll get better. Besides, I wouldn’t call him terrible. He played LF on the fly last season and did better than some guys who played out there a long time.
Agreed. I really think Carp should go. Seems to be an Al kind of guy.
I think it will be the domino effect. Once a key signing goes down (Tex, keep beating that horse, or more likely the closer), then the 2nd level sigings and trades start happening.
I know that we agree that signing tex and trading Delgado sets the team up nicely. Just have to get Omar on board!
I also agree on the SPs. I think Sheets for 2 would be a great idea. lowe is IMO not worth the contract. Garland? yuck, but for the #5? maybe. I would rather take on Marquis as a salary dump. Same results, less years, same salary.
I would roll the dice on Wolf for 2 years. And still would love johnson on a 1 year deal. Buy some time for neise and (likely) Holt to be ready in 2010.
Either go young, or ST contract. Lowe for 4 years is the wrong direction.
Santana, Sheets, Pelfry, Maine and 1 of (marquis, Johnson, Wolf, dark horse from a trade) is a fine rotation. Just have Neise in AAA waiting to fill in.
Tex at 1st? makes the whole team better.
Carp shouldn’t be moved yet IMO his value isn’t going to be high enough because he’s shown no power.
look, i think that baltimore if missing out on teixeira they can trade us daniel cabrera for delgado and we can have our #5 starter and go ALL OUT for #25!!.. with that said we should sign sheet… trade for huston and of course, sign K-rod.. we can have SUPERMAN, sheets, maine, pelfrey and cabrera there… if something happens to any of them we’ll have niese in the wings…
The post yesterday with a link to possible non-tender guys actually included Cabrera on it. If he hits the market as a FA, for sure Omar goes after him hard.
Why wouldn’t the Mets be interested in Furcal for 2B? He’d be a huge upgrade over Castillo.
Don’t think they are doing anything at 2B unless they dump tha poor excuse for a baseball player first. That’s the problem.
is it just me or does it say RHP C.C. Sabathia
Theres Two?
this might make me a heratic, but I think TRS would agree. The SPs isn’t really a big concern. They have some spots to fill, but the rotation did mostly OK last year, and the open spots were the weak links.
As-suming Maines issues were related to the bone spur (seemingly fixed) and he gets back to where he shold be, the top 3 are solid.
So you are replacing erratic Ollie, and the poo poo platter of 1/2 year or less of Pedro and whatever stiff had that spot.
Not sure what you get out of neise. So I prefer to not pencil him in out of ST. perfect for AAA getting his stuff sharp for the inevitable mid-season call up.
So, IMO, 2 solid guys (not just back end stiffs, but maybe legit #3 types) will be enough to get the job done.
Garland could probably do the job. Or marquis. Or Wolf.
Even better, go with Sheets (more upside, but injury risk) along with a durable back end guy. Or Randy J. Vazquez of course would have fit the bill.
Now, a nice young guy to slot in longer term would be great. Sonnastine? Still really unproven (no more so than Pelfrey I guess).
Maybe Snell, or someone like that? Rigth age, has stuff, just had a bad year? Could he be the 2009 Cliff lee?
to wind this up, rebuild the pen, sign Tex, improve the bench, and don’t go nuts with the rotation and that pretty much takes care of the team.
Oh, and really don’t be surprised when the back end guy to fill in the rotation ends up being another year of Pedro. As the #5 guy instead of a marquis?
I agree with you. I think if you totally revamp the bullpen and sign Tex … you don’t have to spend so much on the starting rotation. It would be a much better team.
yup. Can’t go top shelf with every spot at the same time.
And as always, you have to look at what the market gives you and go with what is there. Don’t chase the rare bird if there is a supply of something else you also need.
You watch Mets Cold Stove last night? Matt said something to the effect of, “only a few people here and there email me about Teixeira … most fans want pitching”.
I hope Omar is not thinking like “most fans”.
maybe he should read the comments section more, since I don’t email him!
CAPSLOCK=DISABILITY ACCOMODATION
WHILE I BELIEVE THE TEX/DELGADO OPPORTUNITY WILL NEVER GET OFF THE GROUND FOR OMAR; I WAS VERY INTRIGUED BY SOMETHING JON HEYMAN THREW OUT THERE NONCHALANTLY AT THE CLOSE OF HIS REMARKS RE. CASTILLO AND THAT WAS HIS SPECULATION ON TRADING CASTILLO TO SNAKES WHO ARE CONSIDERING EASLEY AS A REG PLATOON 2B, D’BACK HAVE A CONTRACT THEY’D LOVE TO GET OUT FROM UNDER FOR 2Y/22M TO ERIC BYRNES. WHAT I’D LOVE TO SEE IS A VEGAS GAMBLE ON CASTILLO FOR BYRNES & SIGNING FURCAL FOR 2B. THAT SIMPLE SET OF MOVES WILL SUPPLY ENOUGH NEW ENERGY TO THE CLUBHOUSE AS TO BE THE ENVY OF THAT DRUM POUNDING BUNNY. TO HAVE BACK-2-BACK LEADOFF HITTERS OF THAT CALIBER IN REYES & FURCAL & WACKO BYRNES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LINEUP WOULD BE ENOUGH TO TAKE CITIFIELD OFF THE GRID WITH PLENTY OF ELECTRICITY IN THE LINEUP & FROM THE FANS. IT’S SO LOGICAL AS TO NOT BE CONSIDERED. I’D LIKE IT SO MUICH THAT IF SNAKES WERRE HESITANT I’D THROW IN EITHER EVANS, MURPHY OR CARP FILLING 2 OF THEIR JOLES 2B & LF & SAVING THEM 4M
