In a post to 1050 ESPN Radio, Andrew Marchand writes, ‘The Mets will ‘probably’ make an offer to a closer, during next week’s Winter Meetings,’
according to an executive with knowledge of the team’s thinking.
Last week, multiple reports wrote that the Mets will meet with the agent for Brian Fuentes and Francisco Rodriguez next week.
…well, i would hope so…let’s go…i hope it’s K-Rod, all while working on a deal for a pitcher like Huston Street, who has experience as a closer…
…again, i’m willing to bet J.J. Putz is the team’s first choice, because a) he has tremendous stuff, and b) his the most affordable…however, the competition for putz will be steep, assuming the M’s even make him available, and any player needed in a deal for him will likely be needed in a deal for a starting pitcher, or street, or some one like that…
…also, the longer the Mets need to wait on Seattle’s decision to even trade putz, the more time goes by in which a team like the Brewers could jump up and grab rodriguez…
…it’s time to make a decision, gentlemen…pull the trigger…
Marchand also offers information on whether the Mets will pursue one of Manny Ramirez, Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn.
The Cubs may need to cut payroll, according to Gordon Wittenmyer’s report for the Chicago Sun-Times, in
advance of acquiring a new starting pitcher and a left-handed hitting outfielder.
As such, Wittenmyer says the Cubs could look to trade Jason Marquis, while eating up to $4 million of his roughly $10 million salary, according to team insiders.
Last month, in a post to his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman suggested the Mets look at Marquis, along with M’s LHP Jarrod Washburn and Tigers RHP Nate Robertson, all of whom will be available, to compete with Jon Niese in spring training.
…from what i recall, the Mets inquired about marquis during 2006, and checked in on him again as a free agent, but their interest was minimal at best…however, i have not heard or seen his name connected to the Mets this off-season…at least not yet…
The 30–year-old Marquis has won at least 10 games and pitched at least 190 inning in each of the last five seasons, while posting a 4.58 ERA, during which opponents hit .261 against him.
He will be a free agent following the 2009 season.
