Buzz: Manny and Varitek Arb, Peavy Deal, CC, etc.
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 7, 2008 8:38 pm

Manny Ramirez will reject salary arbitration before tonight’s deadline, writes Jon Heyman at his blog for SI.com.

The Dodgers will turn to free-agent OF Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell, among others, if they are unable to retain Ramirez, reports the Boston Globe.

In a separate post, Heyman describes talks between the Cubs and Padres involving Jake Peavy as on ‘life support,’ according to a person familiar with Chicago’s thinking.

However, on his blog for ESPN.com, Buster Olney writes, ‘Peavy is going to be traded, and what will be left is a team looking at a long rebuilding process.’

Heyman also reports here that CC Sabathia expects the Brewers to up their offer from five years to six.

…from a Mets perspective, if the Brewers can re-sign sabathia, they may be inclined to ramp up efforts to sign a free-agent closer, like Francisco Rodriguez, thus putting pressure on the Mets to do the same, and weakening Omar Minaya’s position

Lastly, also according to Heyman, here, C Jason Varitek is also planning to reject salary arbitration.

jeez, maybe they should just call these the Heyman Meetings…i hope he has an unlimited cell phone plan…

manny is the perfect answer for a team with an unlimited budget which omar does not have

there is no way the mets can sign Manny Krod a starter and more bullpen help.

Manny would be good but we better score 10 runs a game because our starters might give up 5 runs a game and you know if we dont overhaul our bullpen then any lead isnt safe

I believe you mean if they CANNOT re-sign Sabathia. They would have no money left to sign K-Rod if they do sign Sabathia.

    • Actually, I don’t.

thats what i was thinking the brewers are not a large market team and there is no way they can afford C.C. and a top of the line closer

And if Sheets accepts arbitration. Plus they’re going to have big salary increases in arbitration.

I’m as-suming he means if they were going to put that kind of money into cc they would decide to just go ahead and go all in. Which would include going after K-rod. It wouldn’t make any sense to spend that kind of money on CC but then be too cheap to fill other holes. They might as well just not bring back CC.

Wow, 8 posts on a Sun. And we still have 3 more hours to go. God, how I miss the regular season…

  4. Rome1224 says:

Let’s go after CC and Wood. Trade for street and Dye. Then we are set. We can afford CC just raise ticket prices or install PSL’S.

  5. Rome1224 says:

Well forget the dye thing sign Dunn.

Cerone please explain your thinking that the Brewers would have the kind of money to keep Sabathia AND sign K-Rod if the Mets cant fix the bull pen via trade and signing K-Rod or Fuentes (as they intend to) on top of signing a player like Manny or Tex. Are the Wilpons that stingy, the Brewers just crazy, or a little of both?

  7. uppertank says:

Manny will sign with the Yankees. Manny Hood.

Stick Fuentes in there after Wood I guess. In my mind, he was part of my post. In actuality I just forgot to put him in there.
