If the Mets had a quality set-up man, and a quality closer, they would have won the division by 5 + games. Outfield is not a priority, and it makes sense to keep all of your trading chips around until you shore up those gaping holes, then attend to those needs.

Also, who doesn’t want to see a Cameron Redux, just so he can collide with Beltran again, this time in left center. You know he’ll get top notch medical treatment, ask Ryan Church.

when will people learn that an all-star laden team means nothing and usually fails? Tying yourself to the contract it will take to sign Manny would be stupid, especially given his propensity to not play hard unless motivated by impending free agency, and given his age.

Since the bullpen is the biggest priority, they have to see how much they spend and who they trade before they can make other deals.

For example, let’s say they traded Heilman for the Cubs pitcher. If Heilman is the key to the Street trade, then we don’t get Street.

So, would you rather they get the Cubs pitcher or trade for Street?

if we had unlimited prospects to trade, i’d say you’re right, but you can’t trade players twice for different players, thus making it difficult to go after numerous guys at the same time without knowing what you’ll have to give up/if you even have enough to get everything you may want. However, everything else you said makes perfect sense and as I continue to read your posts on this blog, I wonder how someone with a baseball mind like yours is relegated to only being to have a say on a blog about baseball, and not actually being able to take part in any of these decisions. True shame and a waste.

Do you think the Mets would consider someone like Casey Blake? I know that 3rd is his primary position, but he’s played quite a bit at first, the outfield, and has even filled in at 2nd and SS. I heard Larry Bowa mention that Blake had a bigger influence on the Dodgers turn around than Manny, and that he’s a tremendous clubhouse guy. Can’t have enough good chemistry guys.

Why trade for anyone when we can just sign Juan Rivera. He can hit for average and for power, field, has a good arm, and is a plus defender. He has an .862 OPS w/ RISP and a career 106+ over league OPS. Most importantly, he’ll be fairly cheap at 6-8 million.
