Relief Pitcher: Mets to Meet with K-Rod Tonight

December 7, 2008 at 21:45 pm · 114 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

Mets GM Omar Minaya will meet with Francisco Rodriguez and his agent, Paul Kinzer, tonight in Las Vegas, ‘and he is expected to make an offer,’ reports SI.com.

…the buzz in baseball seems to suggest the Mets will offer K-Rod a three-year deal, with an option for a fourth year, all worth roughly $12 million per season…

Multiple reports continue to suggest Rodriguez is the team’s first choice, followed by Brian Fuentes.

Earlier, Minaya told reporters that he will meet with Rodriguez, Fuentes and Trevor Hoffman at various points this week.

Update, 12:20 am:

Jeff Wilpon is in Las Vegas, which would suggest the Mets mean business…from what i can gather, like heyman reports, minaya and wilpon intend to make an official offer to K-Rod…

i believe the goal may be to sign him, before even needing to meet with fuentes or hoffman

…i have a good feeling about where this is headed

Metfreak December 7, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Isn’t that less then what the Angels offered him? If so why would he even think about it

Metfreak December 7, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Please no Hoffman

SantanaClause December 7, 2008 at 9:47 pm

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just cut out the Trevor Hoffman part and ill be estatic

metsrule09 December 7, 2008 at 9:49 pm

i agree… lets just get this deal done with.. and then we have the rest of the week to get street and a coupe of starting pitchers…

get ‘er done!

joeinorlando December 7, 2008 at 9:50 pm

gotta start somewhere… not sure if 12mm gets it done though

Number57 December 7, 2008 at 9:51 pm

I have a feeling this dude wants to play here, I think he’ll accept it.

metsrule09 December 7, 2008 at 9:51 pm

yeah, but everybody knows that krod wants to pitch in NY, plus nobody is going to give him more than say 13mil a season anyway with the HUGE closer’s maret this offseason

SantanaClause December 7, 2008 at 9:52 pm

They better not sign either Fuentes or Hoffman unless K-Rod has already signed and why arent they exploring the option of Kerry Wood if we had him, Street, and Cordero it might not be a bad alternative to K-Rod although the perfect realistic scenario would be K-Rod, Street, and Cordero.

metsrule09 December 7, 2008 at 9:52 pm

NO HOFFMAN

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 9:54 pm

LETS GO METS!!!
SIGN KROD!!!
I WANNA SEE SOME SPORTSCENTER COVERAGE IN THE MORNING OR ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CaseStreet December 7, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Drinks are on me!

The good thing is that this is happening now, which means that Omar’s going to be busy doing other things the rest of the week.

Metfreak December 7, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Who said that he is going to sign for 12 million he might just tell Omar where to go aleast offer him 14 million

kingman 26 December 7, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Correctamundo Chase! And I will have a double Zyr and tonic please, with an extra lime…..

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 9:57 pm

For some reason I just KNOW K-Rod is going to accept..

Geez, I meant CASE!

Tex says hi….

IWantManny/Krod4Christmas December 7, 2008 at 9:57 pm

uppertank December 7, 2008 at 9:58 pm

MeetTheMets December 7, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Not a big fan of this reply format–it’s hard to reply to specific people’s remarks…

metsrule09 December 7, 2008 at 10:00 pm

agreed.

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:00 pm

IWantManny is spot on… get this done and major pressure is off the Mets chest..

metsrule09 December 7, 2008 at 10:01 pm

i also agree with casestreet

if we can sign krod tonight, we’re looking at an entire week of starting pitching/ setup man deals..

CANT WAIT

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:02 pm

wow im not gonna sleep tonight…

The_Fonz December 7, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Anyone else not like this new format? One of the cool things about this blog as compared to others is you could directly reply to a specific comment.
Now all you can do is add a comment at the end….

Why the change?

metsrule09 December 7, 2008 at 10:07 pm

i know i liked the old way

YES! Tex cannot leave his room, he is blown away by the attention, and says it IS the main reason he will choose the Mets!!

And I think Ibanez likes Manhattans!!

: )

metsrule09 December 7, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Matt, is it possible to change back to the old commenting format? I think all of us would prefer it.

MetsFanInVegas December 7, 2008 at 10:08 pm

See, K-Rod and I’m sure a handful of other free agents are gonna be staying here going with their agent visiting teams. I need to find K-Rod for his autograph!

My father and his girlfriend both work at the Bellagio. I need them to give me the inside scoop if they see a player.

gottabelieve07 December 7, 2008 at 10:09 pm

Agreed on the criticism of the new format.

Loved the way the old format allowed some clear dialogue between posters. Bring it back!

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:09 pm

MetsFanInVegas thats awesome…
Anyway, does anyone know how late they’re meeting?
I got skool tomorow so i cant stay up too late lol

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Hey the shading is better!

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:11 pm

YES!!!!!!
Another over paid, over rated, injury prone loser other teams didn’t want that the Mets will sign (KRod)! Yes!!!! Way to spend big bucks on a guy who is going to pitch one inning every other day when you probably could get the same production from a less expensive under paid, injury prone loser other teams didn’t want (Wood).
YES!!!!!!

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Rome… Watch baseball for a change… And hes NOT injury prone… And Wood is more injury prone than K-Rod…

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Let’s start a pool. How many days till K-rod starts to get regularly boo’d by Mets fans for blowing saves and being over paid.

jayhook December 7, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Sign Kerry Wood as a starter and K-Rod/Street for the bullpen…

kingman 26 December 7, 2008 at 10:14 pm

KRod is injury prone? And a loser? Wow Rome, you have scooped the universe…NOT!

I hope you realize how comically ignorant comparing KRod’s health to Wood’s is….

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:15 pm

if he is a met the injury prone curse will take hold. i don’t watch angels baseball but i watch mets baseball. i know i stinker when i see one and this guys is no good.

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:15 pm

K-Rod wont be boo’d bcause hes awesome and he’ll be better regardless of who we would have had if we didnt get a good closer…
BTW the deal isnt finalized hahahahahah

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:16 pm

i never liked wagner and i was right with that and this will be right to.

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Hey guys I gotta a Question…
Didnt Krod say he wanted to play in NY??

losmets57 December 7, 2008 at 10:17 pm

The excitement of Mets fans is overwhelming. It’s feels like election night while I’m watching the local news, getting constant updates, wondering what I’ll find when I wake up in the morning. I love it!

SIHN K-ROD ‘08!!!

P.S. This new commenting thing is kind of confusing.

IWantManny/Krod4Christmas December 7, 2008 at 10:18 pm

for all you people that are staying up late to see if he signs, are ridiculous. he is not going to sign till mid week at the earliest

mark4212 December 7, 2008 at 10:19 pm

on MLBTR:

8:51pm: Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune says “a source familiar with the talks” rejected the report below. The Sox want more than just Bailey. Gonzales’ source adds that talks with the Mets for Bobby Jenks fell apart over Omar Minaya’s unwillingness to include Bobby Parnell.

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:19 pm

your getting an average closer for big bucks. each year he has at least for or five blown saves he is not worth the money.

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:20 pm

U may be right…
I may be crazy…
But it just may be a lunatic ur lookin for…
Lol
I think ur right manny…

SantanaClause December 7, 2008 at 10:21 pm

I was just thinking they said that with rehab Wagner’s injury would take 8-12 months before coming back does that mean that like september and those three or four games in october and (fingers crossed) the playoff we could have Street in the 7th Wagner in the 8th and K-Rod closing. That could make that bullpen (knock on wood, fingers crossed, on my knees praying) collapse proof.

metsfan575715 December 7, 2008 at 10:21 pm

i dout we sign him tonight but some time tomorrow would be nice.

AS LONG AS WE GET K-ROD WHO CARES WHEN HE SIGNS

the main point is to get him right?

losmets57 December 7, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Rome, you’re an idiot. K-Rod’s not injury prone. He’s gotten injured once I think. Not injury prone. And he’s a loser? Have you seen his stats? And it’s not that the other team’s don’t want him, it’s that they’re too poor to get him.

joeinorlando December 7, 2008 at 10:21 pm

i agree id be shocked if he accepted tonight…. also i just read the Dye for Bailey deal is not true… yet

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:22 pm

didnt Krod say he wanted to play in NY??

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:22 pm

the angels are really poor.

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:24 pm

not for 12 million a year.

metsrule09 December 7, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Rome, first of all you’re completely mislead with the injury prone thing, Wood gets injured every year. Second, K-Rod just set a major league record in saves for a single season. Third, Wagner did pretty good for us, he got hurt and that’s why we lost this season. Fourth, for the fans that boo every time a closer blows a lead, I understand the frustration, i for one am the one throwing couch pillows around the living room, but we have to understand that even when they blow a save, they get right back there te next night and they want to. K-Rod is the perfect closer for the Mets right now. Kerry Wood is way too risky.

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:26 pm

so they rather sign tex then k-rod. isn’t that telling?

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:27 pm

metsrule09 i hope your right.

Metsflip I believe his agent did or he either said something that hinted at the idea. Not sure.

Rome1224 December 7, 2008 at 10:29 pm

i rather get a closer on the cheap and hope it works out then sign a big name and hope for the best. a “wood” mistake cost a half or maybe a season a “krod” mistake cost you 3 years at 12 million.

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Guys stop internet arguing its really retarded to say the least…

losmets57 December 7, 2008 at 10:29 pm

They have Arredondo or whatever his name is to close. They need Tex mor than they K-Rod.

SantanaClause December 7, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Rome Christmas eve, I agree that just K-rod wont solve the pen, but its a step in the right direction. And who out there is better Fuentes blew four saves this year and K-rod blew seven in more than double the opritunities. Plus i trust Dan Warthen and K-Rod will be only 26 next year.

BBmetsfreak36 December 7, 2008 at 10:33 pm

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:41 pm

09believe… lets not get ahead of ourselves… yes i admit i got excited too, but its not official yet.. but were getting close!

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain December 7, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Wait. You are all missing the most important item here.

We need someone with better intro music than Billy. It is going to be hard to replace the theatrics of the black/white bullpen view point entry with Enter Sandman playing in the background.

Who has better music? Wood, Fuentez, Putz, K-Rod? Sure, performance is important, but so is theatrics.

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:44 pm

IDK they should do Low Rider for KRod hahaha i think it works

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain December 7, 2008 at 10:45 pm

By the way, who ever they sign, I hope they have a Plaxico clause in the contract, such that if he gets caught with a gun in his pants (a real gun) his contact is immediately terminated.

2009_believe December 7, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Metsflip – we can only hope that we will be celebrating soon enough, things are looking good!

shea December 7, 2008 at 10:47 pm

I hope Ollie accepts arb tonight.

Doubt it though.

The_Fonz December 7, 2008 at 10:48 pm

I just can’t wait to hear all the fussing about unsportsman like behavior everytime KRod gets a save and throws his fists in the air…my philly fan friends will LOVE that

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Hey guys just noticed something…
Remember when Buster Olney said that the Mets will sign a closer no matter what their asking price?
I think this signing is going to be a walk in the park…

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain December 7, 2008 at 10:54 pm

I am actually a little nervous about the starting rotation.

You have Johan as arguably the best in baseball, a true ace.

But then what?

Pedro was suppose to be 1-A. Obviously last year he was not.
Ollie was not a #2 either.

But right now we have Pelfrey and Maine, who at best are #3s.

We have Niese who at best is a #5.

Arguably, we need three pitchers, and one needs to be at least a #2 guy. Another needs to be an inning eater #4-5 guy. The last guy I guess could be pot luck, perhaps Niese.

Is Derek Lowe a #2? Is Ollie a #2 for that matter? I think both, at best, are #3 again.
Such that we would have a #1 and three #3s, and one #5. This if course is before injury.

Can the Mets win with this? I am not so sure.

metsflip December 7, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Ok did a lil research…
KRod said the Mets are a “good fit”
And i think that even though the Mets are going to give KRod his offer he wants, hes gonna sit on it and see his other options but ultimatley sign with the Mets soon

shea December 7, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Ollie! Ollie! Stay!

KoalaHam December 7, 2008 at 11:05 pm

to 87, the Mets could easily win with that. Not only do we not know Pelfrey’s true number (a 3 or 4 last season, sure, but hes still young), and not only is Maine a much better pitcher than he showed last year (he puts up incredible stretches but then falls off a bit when he has to throw too many pitches), but lets be honest. . .

Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, Jamie Moyer, and Joe Blanton won the world series for the Phillies. If you cant compare Santana, Pelfrey, Maine and 2 others to that, you’re missing a big picture.

bigchart333 December 7, 2008 at 11:15 pm

this new format blOHws…why mess with a good thing? mets blog is by far the best sports blog out there, just change it back…

as for Rome, i dont think ive ever heard more ridiculous rationalization than this:
“i rather get a closer on the cheap and hope it works out then sign a big name and hope for the best.”

so you’re saying you want our Gm to “hope it works out” while being frugal? Are you from another planet? Matt said it best, the best thing about K-Rod is he’s battle tested on a big stage and has the auro to succeed in NY. K rod WILL BE A MET, and as long as we get TWO MORE bullpen arms, while getting rid of heilman and felicano, i will have confidence in the new pen..

and for those of you saying that we need starters too, i hear ya…i would’ve loved Javy Vazquez, but i’d rather re sign ollie and take a flier on Sheets…guy is top 5 starter in MLB when healthy

GravediggerHebner December 7, 2008 at 11:18 pm

My wild, undeducated guess is that this new format has something to do with the whole text message update thing. I could get used to this but if there’s a vote I’d vote to go back to the old way.

bigchart333 December 7, 2008 at 11:21 pm

gravedig—i agree, i think the format actually LOOKS better, but it’s better to be able to reply to an individual comment, as opposed to all…and this “page 1, page 2, view all” nonsense is ridiculous…

Matt and staff—u tried this a while back and it didnt work out, AND we all voted against it pretty much…go back now or I’ll get Eric the Midget to put a hit out on yall…he knows what to do..he KNOWS what TO DO

shea December 7, 2008 at 11:21 pm

I agree Bigchart

bigchart333 December 7, 2008 at 11:24 pm

I really like the format, i think it should be kept, i think its easier to read then the nested crap that was before. and as for replying, as the poster before said, just include (#) when refering to a particular post or quotations work well too

Have to say it again. I HATE this new format. Can’t reply to a specific comment and even more importantly for those of us not young anymore….

Hey, If Krod signs, who gets the number 57……Santana!
Krod will get 62!

cver December 8, 2008 at 3:21 am

Since no one else is talking about it, I will ask “Why haven’t the Mets already signed Beimel? They don’t even seem interested in him. He wouldn’t be THAT expensive (probably not more than Castillo cost). Am I missing something here? He looks like a young stud that could pitch the 7th, 8th, maybe even be a closer, if somebody got hurt. These are the non-moves that always haunt us. Like I thought we should have signed Lowe (last free agency) and Soriano when they became free agents. I think we would have done a lot better with them than Pedro and guys like Alou and Co. worked out.

Troy December 8, 2008 at 4:34 am

Sign K-Rod and Kerry Wood.

Trade Heilman and Pedro Feliciano for Street.

Then release Show..wise.

stickguy December 8, 2008 at 7:31 am

man I am lost with this new structure!

if the big plan is overpay for a declining K Rod, overpay for a declining Hudson, and overpay for a never was good garland, then Omar really does have no clue how to build a team. Knee jerk spending of money on the big names, as oppsoed to rising talent that will make the team better.

somwhow I don’t see replacing say castillo and Pedro with marquis and hudson (for jsut as much $$) as making theteam better. maybe just different.

stay away from old guys with injuriy histories.

Razor Shines December 8, 2008 at 7:51 am
