Relief Pitcher: Sox shoot down Mets-Jenks Rumor
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 7, 2008 9:40 pm

Talks between the Mets and White Sox regarding Bobby Jenks never progressed, because the Mets would not trade Robert Parnell, explains Mark Gonzlas in the Chicago Tribune

Good job by the Mets. Why trade Parnell for Jenks when K-rod is available?

  2. nyleetch2 says:

i hate to start speculating on stuff thats so completely unconfirmed, but should we be holding back a guy like Parnell in a trade for a potentially very solid closer? If we think we’re just as happy with Francisco Rodriguez, i suppose its better to just spend money and save Parnell to either trade for starting pitching or actually use ourselves, but if Jenks is that much more preferable then are we really that high on Parnell?

Then again, all they said was that the talks never progressed, not that it was the deal breaker, so it wouldnt have necessarily happened anyway.

  3. gottabelieve07 says:

Well if there’s any truth to this I think it clearly means the Mets intend to get their closer via Free Agency.

And they well should with KRod and Fuentes on the market.

Getting a 2nd arm via trade like Street etc. makes sense. But they may as well hold as many chips as they can for making acquisitions that fill other needs beyond closer.

  4. brapp says:

I guess the mets are pretty high on Parnell. I wonder who else the whitesox asked the mets for.

  5. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Of course this rumor is out there – it’s to make Krod nervous so he jumps at our offer.

  6. CaseStreet says:

This closer market is unbelievable. Is every closer on the market? Soon you’ll here Mariano is on the market too.

  7. metsflip says:

Ok guys did a lil research..
KRod AND his agent say that KRod is a “good fit” in NY
And also i think that even thought the Mets will give KRod the offer he wants, he will sit on it and see his other options but ultimatley end up with the Mets

  8. tjones28 says:

    Wow. That’s sad.

How could you not trade a Double-A pitcher who is unknown for a 27-year old closer, who is arguably one of the hardest throwing pitchers in the major leagues. It saves you the money in the free agent market by not having to sign a closer, and you’ll be able to re-direct that money towards middle relief and starting pitching.

I’d give up Parnell, Evans and another mid-tier, to low-ball prospect for Jenks in a heartbeat.

  9. No sense in trading valuable prospects for a closer when you can get one on the FA market. We’re ultimately gonna end of with K-Rod -that almost seems a foregone conclusion at this point – unless K-Rod or Omar lose their respective minds. I’d be more willing to bet that K-Rod would back off, preferring instead to hold out for a better offer that may never come, as people like Kyle Lohse did last year. Though K-Rod’s agent is probably too smart for that, in this closer market.

  10. GravediggerHebner says:

The idea that the White Sox want to trade Jenks, who I think made roughly 500 thousand last year and is 3 or 4 years removed from free agency, scares me a lot more than the idea that the Angels would let K-Rod walk via free agency rather than pay him 12-15 million annually. I know the Angels have Arredondo or Shields internally to close, do the White Sox have some cheaper internal option I’m not familiar with?

  11. tjones28 says:

Prospects are meaningless. I hate when fans value prospects higher than they do proven major league players.

  12. GravediggerHebner says:

    (11) tjones The Braves were pretty happy for about 15 years after they traded Doyle Alexander to the Tigers for some meaningless A-ball pitcher named Smoltz.

  13. darkstar73 says:

if anyone thinks this “proposed” trade was Jenks for Parnell, straight up, please refrain from every watching baseball again and/or visiting this site ever again. You don’t deserve it.

  14. CaseStreet says:

El Cy Youngaso and El Kid on the same team.

BTW, I wonder if in making his decision to accept arbitration or sign back with the Mets, Ollie takes into consideration the opportunity to pitch with the best lefty in the game, Santana. I could see a 3 year deal that will make him 30 when he hits FA again. Say 3/40.

  15. bigchart333 says:

lol darkstar…i was kinda thinkgin the same thing…u really can’t be upset at this RUMOR unless we find out who ELSE the sox were supposedly asking for…

listen, i dont care if we acquired a 30 year old dennis eckersley, im 100% convinced that no matter WHO we get or how much we pay/give up, that person will be SETTING Up for K-rod…omar is not so stupid to think that just gettin one big time closer is gonna fix this pen..in a perfect world, we sign k rod, trade for a street or jenks OR even sign wood, then get a biemel or guardado, while getting rid of heilman and feliciano, and making show STRICTLY a loogy (even if it means him pitchign 25 innings like stanton)..i’ll take 3 new arms and a new role for show, while letting parnell and stokes play for a long relief role in ST…

  16. zen says:

    1. k-rod is better than jenks
    2. it’s likely that parnell is better than the player the mets would have picked #1 next year in the pick they lose to the angels

  17. HOFMets57 says:

I wouldn’t be surprised by a straight up trade. In fact, pitchers like Lidstrom have shown fireballers (which, Parnell purportedly is) are extremely valuable.

Also add the possibility the White Sox know something about Jenks’ arm that no one else does. I mean, why would you want to trade a dominating closer like Jenks who is only 26 years old, under minimum salary for a couple more years in the first place??

The Angels on the other hand have tried numerous times to re-sign K-Rod. Fortunately for us, him and his agent, Kinzer vastly underestimated the maraket…

  18. SantanaClause says:

Ollie should be offered four years 10mil per. with insentives for consitency like every three sraight wins= 25K each postseason win= 50K each year with 200+ip = 100K stuff like that. and a club5th year option. fair for both sides.

  19. Nate W. says:

I sure hope this isn’t true.

I can understand holding back Fernando Martinez, and Daniel Murphy, and even Niese.

But when you can get a proven closer under control why would you hold out on a guy who projects to be a set up man? This would only make sense if Parnell can be moved for a proven starter.

  20. Nate W. says:

SantanaClause: you can’t give incentives for wins. You can for IP and starts, but not for performance related stats.

Bonuses starting at 180 IP would be a good idea, but I think he can get more guarenteed money from someone.

  21. Bags_5757 says:

    K-Rod
    Street
    Cordero
    Beimel
    Parnell
    Smith
    Cruz/Lyon

    Santana
    Lowe
    Maine
    Pelfrey
    Sheets/Neise

  22. Bags_5757 says:

Although i wouldnt mind Ollie back….

  23. GravediggerHebner says:

    (17) HOFMets “Also add the possibility the White Sox know something about Jenks’ arm that no one else does.”

I agree, when I see Jenks’ name in any rumors all I keep thinking is that there must be something wrong with him.

I can’t think it’s fiscally motivated, as the Sox have all of Jenks, Danks, Floyd and Quentin not yet eligible for free agency for multiple years and last season paid them a combined total of less than 2 million dollars. That would seem to give them lots of financial flexibility, especially with Swisher gone and Cabrera heading out the door.

  24. zen says:

    k-rod (3 years @ $39m)
    street (for heilman +)
    smith
    sanchez
    schoeneweis
    stokes

    santana
peavy (for niese, feliciano, f-mart, carp)
    pelfrey
    maine
    garland (2 years @ $18m)

  25. GravediggerHebner says:

    (24) zen, I like a lot of what you’ve listed there, but I have a few quibbles.

    1. A 6 member bullpen seems unlikely, would need another lefty I think. Guardado? I’m not a Beimel fan.

    2. I think even if the Mets offered the Padres the top 5 prospects in the system, it wouldn’t matter because Peavy has some control over it and doesn’t want to pitch in NY according to multiple reports.

    3. Garland, a perfectly reasonable 5th starter I agree, made $12 million last year, so $9 mil per is too little, and if you were indicating $18 mil per that’s far too much.

  26. CaseStreet says:

    (24) We just depleted our farm for Santana and we have to trade for a SU guy and a SP. I don’t see Peavy happening.

  27. Kellman says:

    Garland really isn’t that good.

  28. Cactus says:

minaya has no problem dumping guys like lindstrom and bell for shots in the dark, but they won’t trade parnell for jenks??

  29. The Slider says:

The White Sox didn’t want Kunz,, huh? I wonder why?

  30. The Slider says:

Hey, what’s with the new format Matt? Now, we can’t respond to someone else’s post.
