Second Base: Mets want Hudson, must move Luis

In a report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal describes the Mets as ‘desperate to move 2B Luis Castillo,’ so they can sign free agent 2B Orlando Hudson.”

According to Rosenthal, “The only way to do it would be to exchange Castillo’s contract for another of similar value…When the Mets asked the Rangers about Castillo for Vicente Padilla they were told, ‘No thank you.’

Speaking of second baseman, the O’s could eventually look in to trading 2B Brian Roberts, reports the Baltimore Sun, but not before the two sides try to work on a contract extension.

I would only sign hudson to a 3/35 contract, no more than that.
how much is he asking?

CaseStreet December 7, 2008 at 8:12 pm

No thanks. Castillo will have a comeback year. See Delgado 08.

Given the many holes the Mets have, I hope they concentrate on some of the other ones and go the stop gap route with 2B, knowing that Brian Roberts will either be available through trade in the next 7 months, or available as a free agent at the end of next season. I’d much rather wait a year and try to get Roberts than lock up Hudson now.

wasnt he on ‘roids?

GravediggerHebner December 7, 2008 at 8:20 pm

It’s possible, I’m not sure. I just know that he’s the same age as Hudson, has roughly the same on-base and power output as Hudson, but is a MUCH better baserunner and a better fielder than Hudson. Roberts also hasn’t shown any of the decline that many former ‘roid guys have so either he never was using or now he’s on the as yet undetectable stuff…

What a mess.

Gina December 7, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Signing Hudson would basically be the situation we have with castillo all over again.

Gina December 7, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Really if we’re going to sign offensive players it should be a guy like Dunn or Tex. If they want a 2nd basemen it should be a stop gap type player on a very short term contract.

i think signing hudson would be doing the same thing we did with castillo. signing an injury prone 2nd basemen when we have bigger fish to fry. And Gina you know I’m right with you about getting Dunn but I think we both know that isn’t happening, and Ill never understand why not.

uppertank December 7, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Castillo needs to go. Hudson can make it through 100 games at least.

dominicanboy08 December 7, 2008 at 8:20 pm

I will only sign for 3/33, would you be oppose to that?

Gina December 7, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Yes. It’s still too much money, plus I believe Hudson is a type A isn’t he so he’d cost a 1rst rounder. We’d be better off spending like a million more per year and signing Dunn and going with a stop gap at 2nd.

joeinorlando December 7, 2008 at 9:03 pm

I agree … dont understand why they dont like Dunn … Punto could be insurance for Castillo…

what about Castillo and Schow for D. Willis from Detroit ? thoughts

Number57 December 7, 2008 at 9:43 pm

Man Castillo is really clogging the team, huh. what a bad signing.

FlightFromHouston December 7, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Was there ever a worse signing in the history of the fracnhise than Castillo?

Guy was in decline and underwent surgery on both knees last winter so we lock him up for 4 years.

Here’s a theory….

Omar talks to Detroit about taking on Dontrelle Willis contract… he is owed $10 million I think this season, and and $12 million next season… in exchange for taking on Luis Castillo. Tigers have been looking to do something with D-train since the wheels fell off earlier this season, and they do lessen their payroll for this season by taking on Luis Castillo (and who knows… maybe he can play a decent 2b for them) he would rake in front of Magglio and Cabrera, and actually might serve a purpose there, and the D-train might be able to be fixed given time and effort (and maybe the same thing Warthen did for OP before he lost his concentration again).

Just a thought.

wow jersey…thats a good plan

Reyes es el Rey December 8, 2008 at 1:04 am

Placido Polanco has another year on his contract and he is still good at baseball. I don’t think they would touch Castillo.

I used to follow the Marlins. Willis filled out a lot and lost a ton of flexibility and had to change his delivery. His delivery gave him a ton of deception, which he no longer has. He’s not the same pitcher.

metsjets December 9, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Why doesn’t anyone like Dunn? He is Kong Kingman all over again. If you like strikeouts as rally killers in the middle of the line-up, bt all means get him. Obviously you will get your share of HR’s, but don’t hold your breath looking for that timely single.
