Catcher: Mets and Red Sox talked Schneider
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 8, 2008 7:51 pm

Update, 9:10 PM:

In a update to his live blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman explains, “The Mets talked several weeks ago to the Red Sox about dealing Schneider, and hopefully signing Jason Varitek”

However, when the red Sox offered arbitration to Varitek, ‘the Mets turned away from that scenario because they didn’t want to give up both the money necessary to sign Varitek and the first-round draft pick they would have to surrender in compensation.’

Original Post:

The Mets and Red Sox are in talks regarding Brian Schneider, according to two industry sources, reports the Washington Post.

Last month, in a post to his blog for SI.com, Jon Heyman said there were ‘indications,’ based on conversations with other team executives, that ‘the Mets appear open to trading either Ramon Castro or Schneider.’

Speaking of catchers

The Rangers could still trade C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, according to ESPN and FoxSports.com, despite already trading Gerald Laird to the Tigers on Sunday.

  1. Wow….. interesting

  2. metsin080910 says:

Schneider, Castillo for Cora, sign Pudge.

Get it done. Rodrgiuez would give us very good defense which is what Schneider gave us. And if we eat most of Castillo’s contract the Sox could use him as a back-up second basemen.

  3. HeadlinerG60 says:

I’m not a Schneider fan. DEAL!

  4. kingman 26 says:

Wow, maybe Johnny Bench or Ted Simmons would sign a 1-year deal? John Stearns is still in shape. Ron Hodges? Duffy Dyer? Hobie Landrith?

  5. Stan A says:

Varitek? Pudge? This isn’t 2002 anymore. Didn’t they see Varitek hit in the late season and playoffs? The Sox didn’t make it to the WS because they had no hitting below the #6 spot (look how many walks Jason Bay drew.)

STOP SIGNING OLD TIMERS! Didn’t the Mets realize how they dodged a bullet when Posada decided to sign with the Yanks last winter– and they spent the whole season on the bench?

Identify and develop young talent, it’s the only way.

  6. Bye Bye Phil Collins :(

  7. kingman 26 says:

Stan, you took the words right out of my keyboard….Pudge or Varitek—why not re-sign Alou and El Duque too and REALLY save money! But then again, Heyman is often lazy and full of bull, so let’s hope that is the case here.

  8. MeesesGlokmah says:

Man, I liked Schnieider. Oh well. Whatever it takes to form a winning team, I guess.

  9. mextache says:

I like and respect Varitek…but he’s done. And Pudge is a shell of his former self…literally. They both had nice careers but it’s over.

They should just stay put with Castro and Schneider.

  10. stickguy says:

no god no to varitek or pudge.

Sure, trade schneider. Just replace him with a viable LT solution. Or at least a decent ST guy.

  11. CaseStreet says:

This doesn’t make sense, unless there’s a Ramon Hernandez citing at the Belagio, cuz we know Shreck ain’t starting.

  12. kingman 26 says:

    This makes NO sense.

Would Omar really go for a broken down old catcher?

    I hope not…..

  13. therealsince86 says:

Molina/Hernandez here we come. What about a Castillo for Hernandez trade? Then the O’s can trade Roberts?

  14. ohboy says:

seriously..what starting pitcher could Schneider yield unless they’re talking about prospects?

  15. youknowwhatimsayin says:

The only way this could be even be discussed is if the Mets have a deal lined up for Molina or Hernandez.

And NO to I-Rod. He is shot, IMO. Same with V-Tek. Shot.

  16. kingman 26 says:

TRS, let’s hope this thread leads into us trying to get Molina, which you have been wisely advocating for a while now….and Roberts would be the best thing we could have at 2nd as well…..much better player than Hudson.

  17. zen says:

if it’s a 1-year deal i’d bring in varitek and trade schneider.

i’m generally against signing older players who are done, but most catchers don’t hit much anyway and varitek is the type of leader the mets need. every knows he is the red sox leader.

even though he was pretty bad last year he was still on par with schneider

  18. Dannyg914 says:

He wouldn’t even yield any of their decent prospects.

  19. ohboy says:

Dannyg914…exactly. This would have to be a precursor to something else, because dumping Schnieder in the last year of his deal only to sign a Tek or Pudge doesn’t make sense

  20. Bags_5757 says:

    masterson?

  21. kingman 26 says:

Yeah Danny, but if TRS is right, and we can get Molina, we should send Schneider packing with a prepaid first cl*ss plane ticket, in exchange for a pack of Fenway Franks. He cannot hit and is mediocre in every defensive aspect of the game….

  22. i just read that Hernandez got traded to the Reds for Ryan Freel :o

  23. Dannyg914 says:

where did u hear that…heard it was a possibility…also heard that cinci wanted Baltimore to pick up a large portion of the contract…and maybe one other prospect was involved from the reds side. The Red Sox wont even trade him for Teagarden or Salty.

  24. cver says:

I almost crapped in my pants when I read this post. What starting pitcher would the Red Sox want to trade for Schneider? Babe Ruth?

  25. Coolpapabell says:

What prospects would we net? Masterson maybe, but I think that may be too much for the Sox? I can’t imagine the Sox giving up anything substantial.

  27. oleosmirf says:

yea masterson for schneider why dont we throw in Castillo and get papelbon too. that solves the closer problem and our castillo problem at the same time!!!

  28. Rome1224 says:

trade him for a wall clock. it will be more productive then that disappointment.

  29. Coolpapabell says:

Dude, I don’t know I was clearly taking shots in the dark. I do know that the Sox were willing to send Masterson over to the Rangers in exchange for Salty, but the Rangers wanted more, and that tempered the talk.

  30. oleosmirf says:

masterson is a great young pitching prospect and schneider is not worth that

plus no catcher available is better than schenider anyway. he’s very good defensively and he’s not an automatic out. perfectly fine for the 8th hole

  31. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

    How about this:

Brian Scheider and Mike Carp for Justin Masterson

Aaron Heilman, Eddie Kunz, Michael Antonini and Shawn Bowman for Jarrod Saltalamacchia

Now that’s pretty cool, eh? Especially with K-rod

  32. The Slider says:

    Excellent.

How about Jawnny Lestah for Schneider?

  33. Rome1224 says:

how about brian scheinder for a can of spam

  34. i say the mets make mike nickeas their everyday catcher!

  35. kingman 26 says:

Better be a small can of spam past the expiration date, or we are getting robbed….

  36. belikmike23 says:

am i the only one who wouldnt have a problem trading Jon Niese for one of the rangers catchers if schneider is traded for a starter?

  37. BiggieSmalls says:

how about schneider to the Sox for prospects and we turn them around to the O’s with a few other parts for Ramon and Brian Roberts.

We Eat all of Ramon’s contract and that gives The O’s the room for hometown boy Tex.

  38. vic79 says:

hmmm the more i think of it, Varitek and even Rodriguez would be good leaders in the room

    Schneider for a reliever?

  39. Metsfan1981 says:

I’m not a big fan of Schneider, but Varitek was not “on par” with him last year. Schnieder out OPS+ed him 87 to 73. Schneider at this point provides better slugging, better average, and better defense by a good margin. Varitek is a safe bet to decline even further at his age. Keep him far away from this team.

  40. PeckWizzle says:

If the Sox want Schneider, lets see if we can maybe get somethig useful in return. That would open the gates for a castillo/ramon hernandez swap, which TRS suggested. The Orioles are trying to clear Hernandez and his contract so they can bring in top prospect Matt Wieters. The Orioles could then move Roberts elsewhere, probably the cubs, and would have shed some payroll for a run at Tex. If that doesn’t happen, maybe a trade for Montero, Salty (who is overrated) can happen. Otherwise, Josh Thole had better develop quick…
