News: Rangers trade Laird to Tigers
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 8, 2008 12:32 am

The Tigers have acquired C Gerald Laird from the Rangers for Double-A pitching prospect Guillermo Moscoso, reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

Last week in Newsday, Ken Davidoff reported the Mets contacted the Rangers earlier in the off season about Laird, but that there had been no talks of late.

Morosco had been considered Detroit’s fifth-best pitching prospect, according to Baseball America.

The 29–year-old Laird hit .276 in 95 games for Texas in 2008, while hitting six HR and 41 RBI with a .329 OBP.

Update, 2:14 am:

The Detroit Free Press reports Tigers pitching prospect Carlos Melo will also go from Detroit to Texas in the deal.

Melo was not ranked in Baseball America’s Prospect report.

  1. that could have been us…

  2. bkfitz says:

    Laird is a backup catcher.

  3. CitizenSnips says:

Why are catchers seemingly bad hitters?

  4. Gina says:

    He’d start for us.

  5. mr.gee21 says:

Citizen — it’s a tough position to play.

We were definitely spoiled by Piazza.

  6. Whoa Matt, you changed the comments system :o why?

  7. eligoodrich says:

He is a starter. I dont mind the new look ,but now you cant directly reply to a post. That was def the best part of posting on this blog compared to others.

  8. Gina says:

Not being able to reply kind of makes commenting pointless IMO. Plus this is a little bit harder to read for me.

  9. bkfitz says:

“Why are catchers seemingly bad hitters?”

Because the good hitters don’t want to play the most physically demanding position on the field

    “He’d start for us.”

No he wouldn’t. His career numbers are close to Schneiders’. Only his slugging is better but Arlington is a bandbox.

  10. I agree eligoodrich. This reminds me of John Delco’s blog :o

  11. By the way Matt, all of these changes are coming too fast :o Why all of these sudden changes?

  12. GravediggerHebner says:

    (9) agreed bkfitz, a quick glance at Schneider’s and Laird’s career offensive stats shows essentially the same guy. Career BA only .002 points apart, Schneider walks a bit more, Laird a little more pop.

  13. Whoa now comments are separated in different pages? that’s blasphemy…Please Matthew Change it back :( this is painful…

  14. Maine Man says:

if we really want a catcher, lets try to get ramon hernandez or bengie molina other than that there really isn’t that big offensive guy that we can get on a short term basis

  15. Maine Man says:

you kno pelfrey you could just click the “show all” button

  16. oh really? i must have been too upset to see that lol thanks

  17. Maine Man says:

we should go after Milton Bradley. He’s a switch hitter and a great offensive player. he he’s injured, murphy and tatis can fill in, which aint that bad.

  18. But he’s gonna cost a lot of money that we’ll need for pitching :o

  19. darkstar73 says:

Matt, STOP with the changes to the site, seriously, you just entirely messed up the comments section, listen to your readers and stop F’ing sh”’t up!

  20. Steviefan84 says:

I don’t like the new format, please change it back. :( Laird isn’t anything special so I’m not heard broken over him getting traded.

  21. Steviefan84 says:

    Sorry, heart broken.

  22. JarvisJanesAddiction says:

New format……..bad move. Who fixed what wasn’t broken? The jacket? Please change it back.

  23. Prismo says:

We can’t reply to each other!

  24. WestCoastMets_since86 says:

    don’t like the new format…

  25. Steviefan84 says:

I wonder if Matt wanted to do this in order to fix the posts that don’t show up if you type a certain word.

  26. Dirtysanchez says:

matt please go back to the old format

  27. MetsFan4Decades says:

Well, if so Steviefan….I would much rather put up with banned words and comments that don’t post than this format.
For those of us not young anymore, this print is too small to read. And the plus to this blog vs. all others was that ability to reply to a specific comment.

My vote: change it back, Matt.

  28. RodKanehl says:

We couldn’t make the trade because we don’t have a fifth best catcher.

  29. therealsince86 says:

    Well, this certainly won’t work.

  30. Dirtysanchez says:

    greg maddux retired

  31. therealsince86 says:

Did Matt do this so I can’t argue with people anymore?

  32. Dirtysanchez says:

lmao yup real..you forced matts hand…he couldnt handle bloggers emails complaining about your “arguements” loll

  33. stickguy says:

TRS- i don’t like it either. Looks like no more convos for us! At least that anyone will be able to follow (as opposed to random posts in a string…)

Still don’t like the vibe coming through these rumors. Looks like Omar going for the ‘trhwoing big $ at washed up big names” all over again.

Hudson? not making a difference or really fixing a problem 9the way it should be).

  34. therealsince86 says:

    Figures.

  35. therealsince86 says:

I hate the Hudson idea. I would just as soon to have Grudzy on a 1 year deal as Hudson on a 4 year deal. By the time that contract is up we will have a player worse than Grudzy is now and paying him 5 times as much.
Get Lorrett or Grudzy to back up Castillo and see what happens with Slappy between now and May.

  36. Steviefan84 says:

Metsfan4decades; I see your point, I’m trying to figure it out myself. I don’t like the format either and I was just getting used to dealing with the words that don’t post! lol I hope this is temporary and to pick this time during the Winter Meetings to change the format is crazy. Like everything else if I have to I’ll live with it but I wish it would change back. :)

  37. stickguy says:

Punto isn’t evena bad idea. They could use a utility guy with some actual utility.

Hudson is just a bad use of resources. Also overrated, on the down hill slide, over 30, and coming off mutilple hand/wrist injuries. Oh, and he ha no particular range left (based on the stats). And he will likely cost 2x what they are paying Castillo.

Other than that, whats not to like? Especially when it means getting a guy like Garland instead of Sheets, and not even sniffing at Tex, since the budget is shot.

Krdo IMO is going to be a bad deal financially, compared to what you could have gotten (production/$) elsewhere. But, I say sign him if it menas Omar will start making the other important moves.

Closer wasn’t the problem anyway (at least until Wags went down). And for the most part, K Rod did about what Wags did (or would have) last year.

Gotta fix up the middle of the pen. That’s where the damage occurred.

  38. Steviefan84 says:

BTW, I would love Loretta for this team, he’s another one of those gritty, gutsy players that played well playing for Boston. He’d come cheaper and with less of a commitment too!

  39. stickguy says:

theer is one positive to the new format. No more scrolling back to see if someone replied to an earlier post in the middle of the thread. I always thought the old structure really needed a display option to sort posts by most to least recent.

  40. Steviefan84 says:

It would help if there was an option to get notified if someone replied to a post that you made.
